PoliticsBuhari Orders 4,000 Coronavirus Tests Daily by talk2archy(op): 10:59am On Apr 15, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to conduct 4,000 tests per day.

NCDC Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this yesterday at the 11th joint national briefing of the Presidential Taskforce Force on COVID-19, he said Buhari had mandated the NCDC to increase testing in Lagos to 2,000; FCT, 1,000 and the rest of Nigeria, 1,000 per day.

He said:

“We now have the capacity to test 1,500 people per day across the network. This capacity is not being fully utilized at the moment.

The challenge right now is not the laboratory testing capacity, it is how active our public workforce is in identifying samples, collecting and sending them for testing.

“We have sufficient capacity to test 1,500 right now and we’re not close to exhausting that capacity every day. But from today, we’ve to push even harder.

Our target following Mr. President’s speech is to get 2,000 samples per day in Lagos, 1,000 in Abuja and 1,000 for the rest of the country.

“…The challenge is no longer with the labs, the challenge is in collecting samples from those identified as suspect cases.”

Lagos Identifies 119 People with COVID-19 Symptoms During House-to-House Search
editorApril 14, 2020 9:34 Pm
By Martins Ifijeh

The Lagos State Government has identified 119 residents with COVID-19 symptoms during its house-to-house search for persons infected by the virus.

Announcing this during a press briefing Tuesday, the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said so far, a total of 118,009 houses had been reached during the house-to-house exercise.

He said the community search was activated to limit the spread of the disease in the state, adding that so far, those with symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 have had their samples taken with results expected.

Abayomi said: “119 persons were found with symptoms of coronavirus but tests are being conducted to determine their status.

“We have embarked on an active case search in communities. The idea is to go to hotspots and go from door to door with our health personnel. So far, in the last two days, we have visited 118,000 households and we are looking for the typical symptoms of COVID-19. We have identified about 119 people who have the symptoms that are suggestive of COVID-19.

“But let me remind you that COVID-19 is one of the viruses that can cause respiratory symptoms. There are many viruses. So, the idea is to take samples from these 119 and analyse them and that would give us an idea of how much COVID-19 activity is happening in the communities,” he added.

HealthCoronavirus: China Approves Two Coronavirus Vaccines For Human Trials by talk2archy(op): 8:09pm On Apr 14, 2020
China has approved early-stage human tests for two experimental coronavirus vaccines as it battles to contain imported cases and prevent a second wave of COVID-19.

The experimental vaccines are being developed by a Beijing-based unit of Sinovac Biotech and by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, an affiliate of state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group, state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday.

Al Jazeera’s Sarah Clarke, reporting from Hong Kong, said China’s National Health Commission also confirmed the trials will go ahead.

In March, Beijing gave the green light to another clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by the military-backed Academy of Military Medical Sciences and biotech firm CanSino Bio, shortly after US drug developer Moderna said it had begun human tests for their vaccine with the US National Institutes of Health.

“We can confirm now that three particular vaccines are being tested in China, and the National Health Commission has said it will have to clear a number of conditions before they can enable mass production of the vaccines globally,” said Clarke.

As of Tuesday, China reported 82,249 coronavirus cases and 3,341 deaths. There were no fatalities over the past 24 hours.

CrimeDespite #lagosunrest Trend, Police Commissioner Says Nobody Has Been Attacked by talk2archy(op): 6:24pm On Apr 14, 2020
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, on Tuesday said nobody has been attacked or robbed during the Lagos lockdown, despite claims by residents of robbery attacks, especially in border communities.

The Police Boss in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, said no report of robbery or attack has been received by the police command and residents are only been ‘apprehensive.’

“I just want to make it categorically clear that there is no single case of robbery in Agege axis. It was just a mere case of apprehension. Because of the little incident that happened some days ago, miscreants at the borderline between Ogun and Lagos decided to exercise unnecessary unlawful acts, which the police rose to.

“Because of the previous experience they had with these ‘one million boys’ they became apprehensive that because of the dastardly acts that these boys normally do, this brought agitation and they came out and said they are ready to defend themselves,” he said.

Reacting to complain of attacks in the Lekki area of the state, the Police Commissioner said nobody has been attacked.

“That of Lekki axis, nobody has been attacked, you just keep on seeing people sitting in two-three gatherings and they believe that if they continue like this, the number may increase and they may begin to come into the houses.

“There’s been no single house where they have been robbed. Just like Agege, there’s been no single report where anybody has been attacked,” Odumosu claimed.

He then urged Lagos residents to go about their business, especially workers on essential duty. He added that the police have “a robust patrol in all these axis,” where complaints are being received.

The Police Commissioner’s response comes amid social media outcry and trends tagged #LagosUnrest. Using the hashtag, residents have shared videos and pictures of unrest in some parts of Lagos State including Gowon Estate, Agege, Ogba, Iyana Ipaja, Ayobo, among others.

According to the residents, increasing robbery attacks have denied them of peace and sleep and many have turned vigilantes keeping bonfire in case of imminent attack.

In response to the outcry, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on Monday deployed an intervention squad to tackle the crimes in Lagos and Ogun states.

The intervention squad includes Police Mobile Force (PMF) units, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Special Tactical Squad (STS).

HealthPanic In China 89 New Coronavirus Cases Were Reported by talk2archy(op): 10:17am On Apr 14, 2020
China reported 89 new coronavirus cases on April 13, down from 108 the previous day, the health authority said on Tuesday.
Of the total, 86 were imported, down from 98 a day earlier, the National Health Commission said.

China’s state broadcaster had reported earlier that 79 of the day’s imported cases were in the northeast province of Heilongjiang, which shares a border with Russia.

The number of total confirmed cases in China now stands at 82,249. Its death toll from the pandemic stands at 3,341, with no new deaths on April 13.

China’s northeastern border has become a frontline in the fight against a resurgence of the coronavirus epidemic.

Having largely stamped out domestic transmission of the disease, China has been slowly easing curbs on movement as it tries to get its economy back on track.

But there are fears that a rise in imported cases could spark a second wave of COVID-19.

A total of 108 new coronavirus cases were reported in mainland China on Sunday, up from 99 a day earlier, marking the highest daily tally since March 5.

Imported cases accounted for a record 98.

Half involved Chinese nationals returning from Russia’s Far Eastern Federal District, home to the city of Vladivostok.

They re-entered China through border crossings in Heilongjiang province.

Health5G Masts Set On Fire In UK Over Alleged Link With Coronavirus by talk2archy(op): 1:06pm On Apr 05, 2020
5G phone masts are being set alight in the UK after online conspiracy theories have linked the cell towers to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rumors and conspiracy theories over a link between the rollout of 5G and the spread of coronavirus have been spread primarily through social media.

HealthNigerian Nurse Who Recovered From Coronavirus In The US Reveals Her Experiences by talk2archy(op): 12:26pm On Apr 05, 2020
A Nigerian nurse in the USA who recovered from the deadly coronavirus, has opened up about her experiences.
People who are able to go to the hospital on time stand a better chance of surviving, but the thing is that they are asking people to self-quarantine because since it’s a virus, it will run its course and go by itself.

Where it becomes complicated for many people is when they now have underlying illnesses like diabetes, asthma, cardiac problems, and pneumonia. I am diabetic, that’s what made mine worse.”

Those were the opening lines of May Toba, a United States-based nurse, mother of two and visibly elated survivor of the Coronavirus, as she relived her wrestle and recovery from the rampaging virus.

How it all started
“I was having a bit of temperature; I own a thermometer, so I checked myself and found that it was 38.4. Usually, the temperature is supposed to be between 35 and 37.5. I checked the first day, took paracetamol; I kept monitoring it daily and it kept increasing.

“The next day, I decided to go shopping with my son. I didn’t isolate because, to be honest, I was in denial that it could be Coronavirus. I thought it was common cold and general body weakness. By this time, people in London were panic-buying. Everybody was rushing to buy tissues and other things. So, I went shopping with my son, so that if London shuts down over the weekend, we would have food at home.

“I live in South-East London, so as we got to Woolich, I was short of breath and also couldn’t walk long distance without stopping to sit somewhere.

When we got home, I asked my son to offload the things we bought, that I needed to go to the hospital because I was having signs of COVID-19.

I drove down to the hospital where I work. I work in Accident and Emergency and we are the front-liners. Everything comes through our doors.

“On getting there, my colleague said to me: ‘May, you should know better. These are flu-like symptoms. Why don’t you just stay at home for seven days instead of coming to the hospital?’ I told her I wasn’t feeling right at all and that if I was, I wouldn’t come to the hospital.

“Being that I work in the hospital, they rushed me straight, took my samples, and did all my blood tests and x-rays. The COVID-19 test takes 48 hours before the result comes out. They started diagnosing it through the patient’s x-ray. When they do your chest x-ray, they can see from your lungs if there’s fluid in the lungs.

They detected fluid in my lungs and saw that it had started collapsing already. The doctor immediately told me that he’s going to intubate me and place me on a ventilator to allow my lungs rest. I agreed and was injected. That was the last I knew of what happened until four days later.

“According to my colleagues, I was incubated and sent to ICU. I woke up four days later and was told the water in my lungs had already dried up and the blood test had become better. They did another swab and it was negative, that’s how I was discharged.

Please can you trace how you got infected?
“On the 13th, I worked with COVID-19 people. My matron and I were trying to see if it was on that shift I contracted it. I still think it was that shift; because that day, we had about five COVID-19 patients and we weren’t properly dressed at the time, because the WHO hadn’t told us what to wear.

It was the week I was sick that they now decoded that anybody attending to patients with any form of respiratory illness should gown up.

“I would say my symptoms took five days to show because I worked on the 13th and was admitted at the hospital on the 19th. But, you never can tell with this virus. I could have contracted it on the train on my way to work; it could have been brought home from school by any of my children. But I’m grateful to God that he didn’t allow COVID-19 kill me while trying to save others.

Did you get your children tested?
“They didn’t have to be tested because they don’t have any underlying illness and they have not shown symptoms. The government said there is no need for them to be tested. Sadly, a 13-year-old died in London yesterday and he didn’t have any underlying illness. He’s the youngest that has died in London so far. Every day, the death toll is keeps rising.”
