Honestly this issue is already over flogged, every Nigerian undergraduate already knows the important of skill aquisition, even the institution themselves are already advocating for entreprenuer skill. That is why entrepreneur courses are made compulsory for all levels in the universities. what i dont like is the constant overhyping and re-writing of the same topics everytime. we should stop making skill aquisition look like a way to financial heaven. inasmuch as there are entreprenuers doing well we must also acknowledge that there are people who have failed woefully. one thing with this country is that we love running around the wall, about a century ago people were encourage to leave this skills and go get education. now that people are jam -packed in the educational sector skill aquisition is the hype now. instead of us to admit that we have fail as a nation!! we will end up overhyping skill aquisition jst like we over hype education in this country. bunch of unserious people.
I get your point

I'm just sharing my story and hoping it would touch someone

already getting a lot of emails, u might think everyone is aware about skills acquisition but sadly most are not or aren't properly encouraged

Probably the best post on NL this year. If a quarter of our Youths have this mentality then I see a better Nigeria. I met a girl in Naija last year, she has finished school but doing nothing all she needed was just 10k to learn how to make hair. Gave it to her, but she gave used it to treat her poor mum that had an accident.. Though I applaud and understood her but also told her it's a tough world out there and the money was for her to learn hair. Anyway because she was sincere, I gave her more money to learn how to sew since it's her passion. She will graduate before the year ends. I gave her a little more and she is buying and selling second hand clothes along with learning how to sew. Now she is happy working hard to establish herself instead of sitting at home looking for job with her certificate. School is good to get basic knowledge but many wont get employed cos there are no jobs. Money some use to impress Strangers can also be used to start a little something. Thank you so much for this post. Am so proud of you and hope others get inspired by your post
thank you so much for helping that lady

Someone also paid for my sewing machine to encourage me

@OP

Not until people like you understand that skill can be either mental or manual would I begin to take anyone of you serious.

What everyone, not just women, need is to have understanding of something valuable (i.e. skill) and commercialize same for the betterment of self and others. . . When you better the life of others true that which you understand what you gain in return is money.

I bet you, someone that's intelligent but has indignation for manual work can never make any headway should she go ahead to acquire skill in such like of act and vise versa.
valid point

Op, you shouldn't have made this about the ladies to avoid unnecessary insults on ur gender.
A lot of us graduates are still hung up on the ultimate white-collar dream that we are painfully unaware of our environment.
Apart from 'em hard skills, we are so severally deficient in leadership, PR and marketing skills.
Any successful entrepreneur must marry both hard & soft skill.
I like how you described your sewing experience, that's what keeps us going during downtimes, more ink to ya pen or elbow as the case may be.
yes truly it shouldn't be about my gender alone but most times we are at the receiving end

it's expensive to get labourers when you don't know anything about farming, they will milk you. you must learn to cut loses. e. g. one who has oil palm plantation spends a lot just to cut it down for you, farming is another thing all together, it is either you pay double or you cook for them. I don't know about others but my village pple don tear eye finish.

The aim to be productive. I don't need to learn a skill to be in a particular field of labour. Your case of Cassava farming for example, since you've got a land, simply hire a labourer who's into farming, get them plant for you, and after six-months, you could do the harvesting, peeling, washing and sun drying yourself. Days later you could hire another set of labourers to fry for you. Depending on the quantity.

I make hair very well and if I should open a standard saloon tomorrow, I'd still employ the professionals in hair making, and may be doing less in the saloon.
I agree with you to a point, you don't go into a business without the knowledge, like your case, u can make hair, u have an idea about the business already all you need to do is expand and monetize it.

farming isn't as easy as projected please do not be deceived it's not about getting a land and hiring laborers, u need to know when to weed, what type of cassava you're planting, the type or soil you're planting on, when to harvest etc

nothing is easy hence we learn everyday

A certificate is a piece of paper that can lose its value tomorrow but a skill learnt and perfected over time evolves to something bigger and extraordinary {Isabella}

Immediately I finished University, I had such high hopes, I felt I had landed, I wanted to work for a while before going for NYSC, I concluded in me that no interviewer would see me and not wanna give me a job, imagine after series of interviews the excuses were your salary rate is high, you don’t have an NYSC certificate yet, etc.

One morning my mom barged into my room and asked when I was going to learn a skill, I asked her what she meant skill?, she asked me what can I do with my hands I told her I could write she said go on, I said blog, and I could hold an audience I can still hear her laughter till today, she told me those weren’t skills I should either chose between fashion designing or hair making, I said to her what! After how many years in the university I was going to some shop to go learn how to be a tailor.

I was ashamed, what would people say, I couldn’t imagine myself going to some woman to learn how to sew, or make hair, it was beneath me I felt, I was a graduate and was going to work in a big corporation I said to myself.

I was at home for two years doing nothing, I wanted to work before NYSC but jobs weren’t coming so I decided to go for NYSC. Two months later I was bored, I wanted to do something, I wanted to get involved in a charity project, raise funds for female prisoners etc but I had no funds myself, I was really broke then it dawned on me, I am a woman in my 20’s without a dime in my account I got no skills, my blog and vlog were just something I took as a hobby and haven’t been monetized, I was having a taste of the real world and I wasn’t ready for it.

No knowledge is a waste, nothing learnt can be unlearned, I thought for several days no one knows me here, there’s nothing to be ashamed of, I need to learn something my certificate hasn’t given me nothing but who knows what fashion designing might and so I decided, a decision I am so glad I made.

I met this young girl who sews, she’s someone I relate with very well, I begged her to teach me, she was shocked and asked if I was sure I said yes, she gave me her bill, imagine me I was so broke my mum had to send me part of it.

Two months into learning everyone who sees me in the shop thinks I have been there for a year, I am learning in an amazing manner, I never knew I could have passion for sewing, YouTube has become my second home, sewing groups have become family to me, I dream about sewing, I talk sewing, I am so enthusiastic about it and it makes me happy.

Dear women, there isn’t enough jobs for every graduate, you can learn a skill and create jobs for others, entrepreneurs are taking over the world, beauty will fade but having a skill will evolve, no man wants to spend on a woman who has nothing to offer except beauty, you need to bring more than sex into the game, we live in an evil world now, girls are being used please be careful.

I know how to farm; I want to go into cassava farming as soon as I can raise some funds, don’t be ashamed to work with your hands, don’t be ashamed to earn a honest living, nothing good comes easy, it takes time, hard work and patience, even if I don’t become a fashion designer tomorrow this is a skill I can never forget I can sew for my kids and husband even my mother.

Don’t tell me you’re an independent Woman, show me.
