The rise of selfie photography in some of the world's most beautiful, and dangerous, places is sparking a range of interventions aimed at combating risk-taking that has resulted in a string of gruesome deaths worldwide. The act of taking a picture of oneself with a mobile phone, placing the subject centre-stage, has exploded in popularity in recent years, with everyone from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II to U.S. President Barack Obama joining in. But the selfie has also inspired a spate of risk taking and offensive public behaviour, pushing the boundaries of safety and decorum, whether by dangling from a skyscraper or posing with live explosives. Several governments and regulatory bodies have now begun treating the selfie as a serious threat to public safety, leading them to launch public education campaigns reminiscent of those against smoking and binge drinking. Dozens of grisly selfie-related deaths and injuries in early 2015 led Russia's Interior Ministry to launch a campaign warning avid mobile phone snappers about the danger of, among other things, posing for a selfie with a lion. In June, two men in the Ural Mountains died after posing pulling the pin from a hand grenade; in May a woman survived shooting herself in the head in her Moscow office; a month later a 21-year-old university graduate plunged 40 feet (12 metres) to her death while posing hanging from a Moscow bridge. "A cool selfie could cost you your life," reads a poster from the campaign, which includes safety videos and information booklets. Despite Russia's diplomatic isolation over its support for separatist rebels in Ukraine, on the issue of dangerous selfies the Kremlin finds itself in accord with the European Union and the United States. In Texas on Wednesday, a 19-year-old father of two died after shooting himself in the neck during a selfie. In Yellowstone National Park exasperated officials issued warnings after five separate selfie takers were gored this summer while standing too near bison. The European Union in June proposed a law to criminalise social media posts containing pictures of landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Rome's Trevi Fountain. And in India this week officials said they were implementing a "no selfie zone" at the Hindu Kumbh Mela festival over fears they may cause stampedes. ALL ABOUT ME Yet despite the risks, selfies are more popular than ever, according to data from Google Trends. Searches for the term were up eight times in 2014 over the previous year, leading the Internet search giant to dub it "The Year of the Selfie". Selfies tend to attract a type of person already more likely to push the boundaries of normal behaviour, says Jesse Fox, an assistant professor of communications at Ohio State University. Her research says people exhibiting the so-called Dark Triad of personality traits - narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy - are likely to pursue selfie glory regardless of who gets hurt in the process. "It's all about me. It's putting me in the frame. I'm getting attention and when I post that to social media, I'm getting the confirmation that I need from other people that I'm awesome," Fox told Reuters. "You don't care about the tourist attraction you're destroying; you don't care about annoying people in your social media feed ... you're not even thinking about the consequences of your actions, so who cares if you're dangling off the side of the Eiffel Tower?" That has not stopped some countries trying to capitalise on the trend's popularity. Tourism Australia this week launched a campaign promising an opportunity to take the "World's Largest Selfie", aimed at selfie-mad Japan. They have installed several so-called GigaSelfie platforms in some of the country's most breathtaking environs from which, with an associated app, visitors can capture an ultra hi-resolution shot taken by a far away camera.

mensdept:No part of this country is ready for war,not even the Nigerian Army, some soldiers will be torn between loyalty to the Nigerian Army and their region, most especially the Igbo's since they have been clamoring for a break away. |
Mekus68:That I can't say, because I don't believe everything the media prints, I have my reservations about US not wanting to sell us arms. |
chuna1985:It's sunday morning I don't throw hate words around. Go and sin no more |
kernel501:Thanks I appreciate you too, I believe by now, we all should have broken the barriers of tribalism, ethnicity and religious differences. It's so unfortunate that we are still in this murky water, which has bedeviled our moving forward as a nation. As a person, I don't have any issue with the president appointing his cabinet from one part of the country, although he should be fair and just, those people clamoring for appointments in their region, won't even smell an inch of the appointee even if the person lives in the same community with them. I pray for a better Nigeria for all |
oluwalfa:Noted |
atbu1983:You have spoken well, but I love this country Nigeria, I pray it never splits |
Mekus68:weapons and equipment you say, hope you are not banking on the south south boys tools, because am not aware of any military firepower anywhere in the south east, Nigeria as a country has allies ready to supply ammunitions and other military hardware, that's like the same thing that happened in the civil war. referendum should be what the biafrans should channel all their energy to, and not down the memory lane of war |
GOOD EVENING MY FELLOW NAIRALANDERS, am spending my weekend at the office and after clearing my table,i decided to relax with some youtube videos, while watching all sorts of short clips of gangstar shootouts on brooklyn street, and other gun related deaths, my mind traveled to world war, and watched some clips. in the middle of this, the thought of secession came to my mind, no day will go by without a thread talking about Biafra, and i was prompted to view how the biafra war was like. i came across this video (link below), and i was astonished by the detailed analysis of the war. it saddens my heart to see how people were displaced and lives were lost. i see so many of our Igbo folks talking about secession and they even boast that they are battle ready, if you witness this kind of artillery attack for a split second, you will change your mind. if the Igbo people wants to break out of this Country of ours, please lets thread the peaceful path i pray for a United Country where equality and Justice is been served to its populace. God bless Nigeria God bless Nairaland God bless us all https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8zXftCUlYk |

Who will blame this people, when the power distribution company has failed to supply regular power supply to this area, and come at the end of the month to distribute exorbitant power bills, failure to pay leads to their house being disconnected, as we all know, you are to pay a reconnect fine for you to connect to the power grid. This people have taken the law into their hands by scaring the phcn officials away by placing what looks like those things you see in yoruba movies "Abija" and "Fadeyi oloro" charms. i so much gbadun their style, my house bill don pass 100k, and those guys never come, guess this is a good idea anyway... but we don dey get light small small this days ![]() breaking news Amadioha just checked in at the Gym, after seeing this post.... ![]()

i don't know whether its the UNITED NATIONS PEACE AMBASSADOR thing that he was honored with that made him lose it, or he just wants to show off to the western world that he's not homophobic. how can a sane Nigerian Artiste promote this act ? someone some people look up to as a role model, father, bro and all sort in the society, a veteran Nigerian Rapper, now acting like a bootlicker to the western world culture. am not homophobic But the trend at which our Nollywood Industry and Mainstream Music Artistes promotes homosexuality in their videos is alarming, i don't know the job of our censor board, it's when people are tired of listening to a song, that's when they will ban the song. https://instagram.com/p/5r3WPKwz31/?taken-by=ruggedybaba

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has approved the disbursement of a sum of 119 million naira as car loans to 623 workers in the state public service. The state’s Commissioner for Finance, Toyin Ojo, disclosed this in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, at the weekend. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) got 82,120,000 naira while Parastatals and Agencies got 36.80 million naira. Mr Ojo, according to a statement by the Ministry of Information on Monday, said that the loans, which ranged from 800,000 naira to 1.5 million naira, was “approved depending on the salary grade level of the benefiting officers”. The government’s statement said that the Commissioner “stressed the commitment of the Fayose administration to the welfare of workers in the state civil service” and explained that “the loan is to be disbursed in one single tranche to the benefiting officers”. He had “also promised that another batch of beneficiaries of the workers’ car loans will be announced before the end of this year”. source: http://www.channelstv.com/2015/07/27/fayose-approves-119-million-naira-car-loan-for-ekiti-workers/

the personnel of the Lagos State Fire Service said on Saturday that they rescued a 40-year-old man from death after he used a s*x performance enhancer that enlarged his pennis beyond expectation. The Director of Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, who made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said the man wore a metal ring on his man-hood. The ring, according to him, was to enhance erection and ultimately enhance s*xual satisfaction but turned out to swell the organ beyond his expectation. “His experience turned sour when the man-hood became so erect and swollen beyond his expectation and could not come down and the ring could not be removed. “When it became apparent that the condition was threatening his life, he rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja for help. “The hospital invited the service to rescue the man, when they could not easily remove the ring. “We successfully removed the metal ring in collaboration with the hospital staff at the emergency unit using our rescue tools”, he told NAN. “The incident happened at about 3.15 p.m. on Friday and it took us about 50 minutes for the operation. “The man wore the ring to enhance his man-hood for s*xual satisfaction, but it turned out to be a threat to his life”, Fadipe said. Am tired of seeing rape/molest/abuse report on our women, especially the minors, a typical headline goes thus: A 70 year old man defiles a 4 year old girl in Benue This has become a trend and the Government is trying to curb this menace of a thing by campaigns and jail terms, but most of these offenders go free after meeting bail conditions. Rape as we all know is as simple as non-consensual sex, even when after smooshing and all, unclad and moaning for you to come on. You pull your instrument out and a spirit enters her and she says NO STOP, it isn't easy as a guy to calm the raging boner of a thing but courtesy and common sense demands you stop. Some idiots go ahead and force themselves on her, having that "movie" illusion that she's going to succumb to the pleasure like ( stop, stop, I said stop, please stop, sto, st, s, sssss.... and the moaning starts). Please guys, this are movie scenes that aren't always true, don't think she's forming hard to get, be a gentleman and get up, if she's sees the gentleman in you, she will call you back to finish the job, else keep calm and join the vaseline crew when she leaves. Rape is a Crime and most of the time, the Male folks are the major culprit in this inhumane crime against humanity. #saynotorape
