Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has called on Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, 74, to reveal the condition of his health after spending nearly two months in Britain on medical leave.

Soyinka, who spoke in an interview with AFP at Paris Book Fair weekend, also said indigenous people had a right to assert themselves as a distinct people, even within a political and geographical zone anywhere in the world

“He’s ill, there’s no question, and I wish for heaven’s sake that people in public positions would just be honest.
“Illness is part of our existence. Buhari owes it to the nation and I don’t know why he and his advisors are being so coy about it,” Soyinka said.
Soyinka, who also noted that US President, Donald Trump, exploited “latent xenophobia” to reach the White House, said a people had a right to agitate for self-autonomy within a geographical expression.
He was obviously reacting to the agitation for declaration of independent state of Biafra in the South East of Nigeria.
He said: “It’s not the real estate for me that defines a nation or a people, no, it’s a history, a culture.
What is a crime within an artificial entity like Nigeria? You have states being created which are not viable.”
Biafra unsuccessfully fought for independence in a brutal three-year civil war — during which Soyinka was imprisoned for nearly two years over allegations of espionage.
Separatist sentiment has grown since the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was arrested in October 2015, sparking bloody clashes with security forces.
The military denied an allegation by Amnesty International in November that security agents killed some 150 Biafra protesters in the past year.
Soyinka said: “I cannot accept the notion that people have a right to kill other people because they want to assert their identity… It it doesn’t cost anything to recognise it.”
Ironically, IPOB threw its support behind Trump’s presidential campaign in the belief he would recognise their independence movement.
Soon after Britons voted to leave the European Union in a referendum last July, the group pushed for its own version of “Brexit” from Nigeria that it dubbed “Biafrexit”.
He said President Donald Trump, exploited “latent xenophobia” to reach the White House, decrying the erection of walls, especially in people’s minds, anywhere in the world.
He said: “He played to a latent xenophobic streak which exists in all societies including mine,” said Soyinka, who renounced his US green card upon Trump’s victory in November over the Republican’s anti-immigrant rhetoric. When I see that kind of conduct… to gain power, I’m completely revolted.”
Soyinka, who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1986, said further: “To me a horrible moment was to watch hundreds of thousands of people actually applauding when (Trump) uttered these sentiments” during the election campaign.
“I’m against the erection of walls, especially in people’s minds,” the white-haired professor added. I’ve never made any bones about it, whether it’s happening in Nigeria” or elsewhere.”
Soyinka recalled when in 1983, faced with a steep drop in oil prices, the Nigerian government, “to cover up all its problems, decided to expel aliens”.
Some two million undocumented immigrants — mainly from nearby Ghana — were given a few weeks to leave the west African country, whose economy is driven by vast oil resources.
“There were hordes of refugees in ramshackle lorries going back to their home countries. Ever since, the chequered jute bag used by travellers throughout west Africa has been known as the “Ghana Must Go bag,” Soyinka said.

Olajumoke Orisaguna or Jumoke Sunday (born 1989) is a Nigerian model who came to notice when she appeared on the cover of a magazine before she was employed as a model. The story was reported in various media including CNN. Olajumoke Orisaguna was born in 1989 and brought up in Ire in Osun state. She trained as a hairdresser where she met an artisan named Sunday Orisaguna. They married in about 2010 and they had two children. She travelled to Lagos with one of her children where she hoped to make more money selling bread. Her husband stayed behind with the other child where he worked installing sliding doors. Whilst she was working in Lagos where was caught in the background of a photo shoot where the photographer, TY Bello only discovered her face later when the day's work was seen on social media. Bello had been photographing the British rapper Tinie Tempah and at the time she had been ambiguous about Orisaguna had walked into the photo shoot. She had asked her if it was OK to take her picture and she had been given a nod. In an attempt to find Orisaguna she arranged for her picture to appear on the cover of Style magazine. She was discovered and she was offered a modelling contract, internships and work, despite not speaking English. Her husband and her other child moved to Lagos to join in her good fortune. Her story and success after working hard as a model was reported as a role model. According to CNN, she will be offered some education and a bank has offered to pay for her children to attend school.

I just wanna thank the Lord for seeing me through in my jamb exam. I didn't read at all. I flipped through the pages of Forcados High School and my SSS 1 govt note for a few hours (2hrs or so) and that was all I ever did in preparation for the exam.

I have never failed jamb(though I don't pray to be a veteran-lol) and its just the doing of the Lord.

Experience/ familiarity with the questions + GRACE helped me cos I didn't read at all. I kept postponing till the day of the exam which was yesterday. I scored 222 without READING & this is the first time I'll sit for an exam without reading. I was just frustrated that's why I didn't study and I pray this will be the last jamb cos I'm getting in by His Grace in Jesus name.

Success to the rest of the jambites as well.

We received the news of the renaming of Osun State owned tertiary institutions with rude shock. Gov. Aregbesola announced the renaming at the uniosun convocation ceremony yesterday 9th March 2016.
The new names are as follows:
1. Iree Poly now S.M. Afolabi
2. Ila now Adeyemi Oyeduntan College.
3. Ilesha now Lanre Omole.
4.Esa-oke now Bisi Akande.
5. Uniosun now Bola Ige University with the colleges as follow:
a. Okuku now Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
b. Ejigbo now Isiaka Adeleke
c. Ikire now Eniola Atanda.
d. Ifetedo now Kayode Esho.
e. Ipetu now Hezekiah Oluwasanmi.
The decision to rename the schools without an iota of consultation is totally undemocratic and a departure from all norms of progress and societal tranquillity. The students, staff, management and host communities are relevant stakeholders that ought to have been carried along.
It is even more appalling that Gov. Aregbesola did not deem it fit to get the approval of the state house of assembly before the unwarranted name changing.
Now to all Osun State students (OSSA)
If we all accept this and not going against it totally,the changing of our institutions name will surely affect our certificate. It will decrease the worthiness of our certificate nationwide.
Let us all come together and SAY NO to Gov. Aregbesola decree!!!

The arrest was made after they protested on February 4, 2016 in Ile-Ife against the decision of the state government to stop the payment of their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees. The state government excuse was that they failed mock examinations. We However maintain the stand that it will not only be difficult but also invisible for students to pass under the poor condition of education in Osun state. We condemn the arrest and detained of this Victims for It is abnormal for the State Government to criminalise citizens for its failure to provide standard and well welfare education in the state. Hence, We consider this as a threat to Our peaceful coexistence as Students and radical citizens of Osun. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has delisted four tertiary institutions owned by Osun State Government have been from its website. They were said to be delisted for next two academic sessions on the request of the state government over plans to restructure them. The institutions as made known by the Alumni Associations of the four state-owned tertiary institutions are Osun state Polytechnic Iree, Osun State College of Technology, Esa-Oke, Osun State College of Education, Ila Orangun, and Osun state College of Education, Ilesa. This is as no fewer than 50,000 students who have been offered admission to study various courses in the four institutions might forfeit their admissions. The President of OSPOLY Alumni, Iree who is spokesperson of the alumni bodies, Mrs. Mobola Odebode said state government had written to JAMB to delist the affected institutions for the next two years in order to give way for its proposed restructuring of the institutions. Odebobe who was flanked by other alumni Presidents said the state government has refused to listen to the voice of reasoning on the rumoured merger of the four tertiary institutions stressing that Governor Rauf Aregbesola is trying to obliterate polytechnic education in the state. She said that most of the affected admission seekers to these institutions had been offered provision admission for 2015/2016 academic sessions but were surprised to find out that their potential schools are no longer on the JAMB portals. Her words: “It is painful that despite pleas from traditional rulers, host communities, political parties, students, market women, Alumni Associations and well meaning Nigerians, the government has refused to listen to he voice of reasoning on the matter. As products of institutions, we had resolved to continue the struggle to protect the existence of these institutions. ”Part of the frustrations we envisaged is already manifesting. It is before the public knowledge that the state government, last week sacked over 250 workers in Osun state Colleges of Education, Ila Orangun and Ilesa. These institutions already lack academic and non academic staff for the past five years. ”Also, over 50,000 students who applied to the four state owned tertiary institutions through Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will be denied admission as the government has written to the admission body to delist these four institutions for the next two years. This means that none of the affect state-owned institutions is on the list of JAMB.” Odebode also disclosed that Osun state government had ordered the four institutions to advertise admission for vocational and remedial studies thus querying the government on why polytechnic should lay the role that a technical college could play more effectively. She said “It is rather ironical that at a period that China is converting universities to polytechnics to advance the technological education as a key for the growth AF development of the country, the state of Osun government is trying to obliterate polytechnic education. “We are so confident that the government wants to destroy the whole system for their private business benefits. We are fully aware of correspondences between some private institutions approaching the affected institutions to divert their admitted students to their various schools,” Odebode added. The alumni body however condemned the alleged dismissal of the over 250 workers and demanded for their reinstatement. The associations also demanded that the state government withdraw the letter written to JAMB to allow admission to the affected institutions ad allow candidates who have been offered provisional admission to continue their programmes.
