NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION DE-ACCREDITATION OF PROGRAMMES OF THE ENUGU STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (ESUT). The attention of the National Universities Commission (NUC) has been drawn to an advertorial in some National dailies as well as on the university’s website on Admission into the so-called “Undergraduate Electronic Mature Students programme (e-MSP)” by the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) for the 2012/2013 academic session. For the avoidance of doubt, the National Universities Commission has not granted approval to any Nigerian university, including ESUT, to run on-line degree programmes in any academic discipline. The so-called “Undergraduate Electronic Mature Students programme (e-MSP)” is therefore illegal and is not recognized by NUC. It is on record that the National Universities Commission had published the approved “Guidelines for open and distance learning in Nigerian universities” which is available on the Commission’s website and is also widely circulated. NUC is also currently working with some Nigerian universities to build the professional capacity needed for the delivery of quality university education via the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode. In fact, ESUT had already benefitted from an advocacy workshop organized by NUC for Principal Officers and academic staff on its campus in Enugu and the authorities and staff of the university are fully aware of the procedure and requirements for the establishment of degree programmes by the ODL mode in the Nigerian university system. It was therefore a rude shock to the Commission to see advertorials in some National Dailies [see The Guardian of Thursday, 1 st March, 2012] and on the ESUT website, inviting application for admission into the illegal/unapproved Undergraduate Electronic Mature Students programme (e-MSP)”. This flagrant display of disregard for due process and Perpetration of illegality by ESUT in advertising for admission into illegal degree programmes is not only despicable but is a clear indication that the university has no regards for the tenet of integrity and quality. NUC as the Statutory Quality Assurance agency for university education in Nigeria cannot stand by idly while some universities engage in activities aimed at undermining the quality of university education in Nigeria. Consequently, the National Universities Commission hereby de-accredits the following programmes of ESUT including those run on full-time basis on the university’s campus with immediate effect: 1. B.Sc. Accounting; 2. B.Sc. Applied Microbiology and Brewing; 3. B. Sc. Business Administration; 4. B. Sc. Banking and Finance; 5. B.Sc. Computer and Information Science; 6. B.Sc. Economics; 7. B.Sc. Industrial Mathematics with Statistics; 8. B.Sc. Marketing; 9. B.Sc. Political Science; 10. B.Sc. Public Administration. The Commission seizes this opportunity to remind all Nigerian universities that all advertorials for admission into new academic degree programmes MUST be approved by the National Universities Commission. In addition, no university is allowed to run any degree programme by Open Distance and Elearning mode without written approval from the National Universities Commission while the existing distance learning centres are required to seek approval from the Commission before introducing new programmes. The general public is hereby strongly advised not to patronize this illegal “Undergraduate Electronic Mature Students programme (e-MSP)” of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) or any other illegal programme in any Nigerian university as any degrees or other qualifications obtained from such unapproved/ illegal programmes shall not be recognized for the purposes of employment, National Youth Service or further studies . When in doubt about the legality or otherwise of any degree programme, members of the public are urged to contact the National Universities Commission or visit the Commission’s website www.nuc.edu.ng.
