The Labour Market Observatory Project (LMOP), under the auspices of the National Universities Commission (NUC), conducted a survey for the generation of data on the manufacturing sector. It was chaired by the Commission’s Deputy Executive Secretary, Mr. Akinbode Agbaoye and it has submitted the report of its findings, on the graduate needs of the manufacturing sector, to the Chairman of the Project National Steering Committee (NSC) and Executive Secretary, Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON Receiving, the report on Thursday, 11 April, 2013, at the NUC Virtual Library, the Executive Secretary thanked the Committee for performing the daunting task in record time, promising that the outcome of the study would be effectively implemented.

Obong University, Obong-Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, on Saturday, 20 April, 2013, held its maiden convocation, for 21 students from the Faculties of Management/Social Sciences and Natural/Applied Sciences. The Visitor, Professor Moses Akpan Udo, applauded the efforts of its founding fathers, including the pioneer Vice- Chancellor, Professor Enefiok Udo and Arc. On Monday 15th April, 2013, the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayatu Ahmed Rufa’i OON, led a delegation on a working visit to Princeton University, New Jersey, United States of America, to explore and cultivate long term ties that would guarantee placements for Nigerian candidates and also accord them special consideration in the admission process.

On the delegation were the Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Julius A. Okojie; Special Assistant to the Minister of Education, Professor Sagir Abbas; Liaison Office Manager, Nigerian Universities Office, Washington DC, Dr. Aboki Samu and Chief of Staff to the Executive Secretary, Mr. Chris Maiyaki.

In a welcome address, Dean of the Graduate School, Professor William B. Russel said Princeton University was established in 1746 as a private research university. One of the eight Ivy League universities and one of the nine colonial colleges, founded before the American Revolution, he said, Princeton is the fourth oldest college in the United States, which provides undergraduate and graduate instructions in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering. It has more than 1,100 faculty members, approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 2,500 graduate students.

The NDA Postgraduate School was established in 2005. However, sometime last year, the NUC had directed NDA to close down all PG programmes in the school for lack of formal approval from the Commission. The decision was in line with the Commission’s new policy on PG programmes in all universities, which entails resource verification. Subsequently, NDA hosted the NUC resource verification team from 23 – 24 August 2012 . The result of the verification exercise showed an overwhelming percentage pass for all departments running postgraduate programmes. 7. they claim you can gain admission without passing JAMB.

8. if you go through step 1 and 2 of this list and you still arent convinced
the university you plan to attend is legal, should you go ahead
and pay fees to these fraudsters,waste your time getting absolutely
nothing of value, lets just say we arent surprised
you didnt pass jamb in the first place
and soon there will be laws that can find you guilty
of conspiring to operate an illegal university.

RE:MORATORIUM ON PART-TIME PROGRAMMES.


1. It would be recalled that the NUC ,vide a publication in the print media,
including the Guardian and Sunnewspapers of 19th March, 2012 placed a
moratorium on admission intopart time programmes in Nigerian universities.

The publication requested theuniversities to fully disclose all part time programmes with
respect toenrolment and staffing profile within four weeks of the publication as well as
conduct in house staff and student audit

2. As a follow up, the commissionconvened a meeting with Registrars and Directors of Academic
Planning ofNigerian universities on 15th November, 2012 to which theuniversities were
requested to bring detailed information on their part time programmes.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has published a call for proposals for Telecommunications–based innovations from academics in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

The work must be feasible, pure and applied research ideas that are capable of replacing foreign technologies that are in use in the telecommunications industry in the country, to help mitigate capital flight, occasioned by dependence on foreign technology.

The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, has charged the 59 Regular Course Cadets and the Short Service Course 40 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), to contribute their quota to national development. On Monday, 13 August 2012, the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovation and Development (PRESSID) Committee conducted a computer-based aptitude test for 449 First Class graduates to select the best 100 for sponsorship to study at the top 25 universities in the world. Seven of the candidates, based in the United Kingdom, also had the opportunity of writing the test, simultaneously, at the National Universities Commission’s Liaison Office in London. Addressing newsmen at the Chams City venue of the test in Abuja, Executive Secretary, NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, said the test was meant to select the ‘best’ among the best and ensure that the selected candidates met the minimum requirements for the scheme initiated by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has observed with great concern that some Nigerian universities are running unapproved postgraduate programmes, leading to the award of Masters and PhD degrees. The Commission has also observed that some Parastatals and Institutes are awarding these same Postgraduate degrees, either on their own or through unapproved affiliations with Nigerian and foreign Universities. Such practices are not only unethical, but also antithetical to time-tested quality assurance best practices. The qualifications/awards resulting therefrom are not recognized.
