PoliticsYoruba Assembly, Awolowo Foundation List Terms For Confab by TeaParty(op): 6:17am On Oct 09, 2013
FOR the Yoruba Assembly, the announcement of convening a national conference by President Goodluck Jonathan is a “welcome development” as it will allow each nationality to develop its economy at its own pace within the frame-work of a united Nigerian Federation or Nigerian Union.

Also, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has begun efforts geared at contributing to the national conference.

In a statement Tuesday by Convener of Yoruba Assembly, Lt.-Gen. Alani Akinrinade, the group said a national conference convened to work out a better structure for the survival of the country as one territorial entity characterised by peaceful co-existence of the nationalities should not be subject to the stresses of partisan political parties.

He noted that the organisation of the conference should be without any direct participation by any of the existing political parties in the country.

“While all Yoruba people respect political parties as vitally crucial instruments for the running of the country’s democratic processes, we believe, however, that involving partisan political parties in the national conversation of the national conference is capable of creating avoidable tension and distraction for meaningful dialogue among the nation’s federating units,” the statement said.

The group said the conference should be given freedom and support to do a thorough job in good time, so as to ensure that the national conference would not unnecessarily disrupt the statutory calendar for the 2015 general elections.

In a statement issued by the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation, it recommended that there should be “no-go” areas in the course of the discussion, saying the fact that people would not be restricted would enhance frankness as well as greater acceptability of the conference outcome.

It added that the outcome of the conference should lay appropriate emphasis on the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

One of the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, had upon his arrival from a medical trip in the United States (U.S.) at the weekend, said Nigerians should not rely on the conference, as it would be a “major distraction” and a diversionary step taken by a sinking ship. He said there was something wrong about the timing of the conference as it would fall within the election year.

Everywhere in the world….villages, towns, hamlets, cities, people groups are asking for autonomy to enable them take charge of their affairs and develop at their own pace. For instance Bosnia Herzegovina has a population of less than 4million but today they are a country of people governing themselves and making progress in various areas of human endeavor.

To the best of my knowledge all Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani States claim a population of over 4million each. Yet they are very scared and very unwilling to agree to the restructuring of Nigeria so that each geo-political zone can take care of its affairs and develop at their own pace.

Just mention the word Sovereign National Conference and you will find these Governors, the Emirs, the Sultan, the Arewa Consultative Forum, and the Northern Elders Forum - all of them shivering like dogs with their tails between their legs.

Instead of making it an issue and a strive for power to return to the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani in 2015 ….. the Northern Muslim Hausa-Fulani should be asking for the restructuring of Nigeria in a way that enables them to enjoy autonomy and develop at their own pace with one of their own (preferably Buhari or Sule Lamido) as their leader. That way the power they are clamoring for will remain with them forever ….. in their geo-political zone, from their geo-political zone and for their geo-political zone. ...... makes more sense than the entire "New PDP", PDM & APC crisis.

Count SE/SS states out of your projections, each of them will easily stand independently.

talktimi: its actually quite easy just that our political class try so hard to show us how inept they are. This is across board and includes the self acclaimed "progressives". Definitely there has to be a reduction or merger of states in Nigeria as the only 3 viable states we have are Lagos, Rivers & Kano. These are actually the only states that can survive without federal allocation. Our blessed curse is just that oil money is just so easy and faster to get in billions of dollars meanwhile even without resource control, the fed govt can just issue out mining licenses to multinational corporations for our solid minerals of which we are richly blessed while just chilling out on royalties, its just so easy, im really scared but wondering why no one has thought about or implemented such a revenue generator of geometric proportions...

“Okurounmu is a well-known ex-student of Government College, Ibadan and Tinubu ought to accord comradeship to him if he indeed attended GCI like Dr. Okurounmu.”

PoliticsRe: Factional CPC Completes Merger With PDM by TeaParty: 9:28pm On Oct 08, 2013
A faction of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has formed an alliance with the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM).

Led by their factional National Chairman, Senator Rufai Hanga, the group said they do not wish to join the purported merger of their party by a faction with the new opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Hanga said that despite having a case still pending in court to determine the actual leadership of the defunct party, they can no longer continue to wait while political developments pass them by.

Speaking at the declaration of the merger with PDM on Tuesday, Senator Hanga said their decision to become members of the PDM was based on the fact that the party has a track record of democracy and organisational discipline, adding that they believe in the party’s manifesto.

Hanga, who said his faction had experienced impunity and dictatorship at the highest level in CPC, pointed out that there is no other party in Nigeria at present that abides by the values of justice and equal treatment for all its members.

“Above all, we have confidence in the party’s leadership; its commitment to do justice to all as well as its pledge to treat all party members equally without discrimination of any kind. There is no other party in Nigeria today which abides by these values and there is no other party which is likely to do so, as far as we know,” he said.

According to him, their legal struggle still continues, adding that they have decided to join the PDM regardless of the outcome of the court ruling which is expected next Monday.

“This is a decision over which we had no control, although we have already undertaken extensive consultations and arrived at a decision on the course of action to take whichever way it goes.

“The pace of political events in Nigeria is moving at the speed of light. We do not want to play into the hands of the same destructive and undemocratic forces whose actions compelled us to seek redress in court. In the first place, by allowing political developments to pass us by while they organize to foist another fraudulent agenda on the nation we cherish so much. Doing so will be a great disservice,” he said.

The Tony Momoh-led faction of the party in February 2013 formed an alliance with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), and the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

The alliance produced the All Progressives Congress ((APC)

Is it time to "connect the dots"? What is the common denominator of the 1400 years of invasions, conquests, persecution, intolerance, abductions, forced conversions, enslavement, pillaging, plundering, rape and brutal terrorism? Whether it's Yemen, Sudan, Darfur, Somalia, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Burma, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Russia, China, Thailand, Philippines, Libya , Indonesia, Algeria, Tunisia, Mali, Maldives or France, Germany, Belgium or the UK, Muslims are at the center of on-going, never-ending conflicts. The one constant in all of this senseless brutality is Islam and its inherent and deeply flawed belief system. Like it or not, all cultures or religions are not created equal. Maybe it's time to hard-wire the dots and declare "war" on the real cause of most terrorism - Islam.
PoliticsHow National Dialogue Unsettled Opposition, Core North by TeaParty(op): 9:23am On Oct 08, 2013
THE presidential endorsement of national dialogue may have weakened the push by the core north and political opposition to secure the 2015 presidency, Sunday Tribune investigation has revealed.

Checks showed that the unexpected announcment had since thrown political caucuses of the three northern geo-political zones into frenzy of activities, with the core north gradually openly moving against the convocation of the conference whether sovereign or not.

While some core north leaders are faulting the composotion of the dialogue panel and the whole idea of a conférence, the Middle Belt Forum had jumped at what its chieftains called opportunity to finally assert its separate identity as a distinct region in the middle of Nigeria.

Investigations by Sunday Tribune showed that even the Niger state governor, Babangida Aliyu was rebuked for his initial endorsement of the conférence with a source hinting that the core north believed it was under siege following the announcment by the President.

A top northern leader in Kano who spoke under anonymity said the president’s sudden endorsement of the conference despite northern opposition showed that the intention was political and with direct link with 2015.

“We are worried as the timing is suspicious. We think the announcment is politically motivatied but we are waiting to see how the whole thing will play out” he said.

Another leader in Kaduna who described the decision and appointment into the committee as worrisome said “the South has its first eleven on the panel. We in the north are represented by our 13th team.”

Saying leaders of Arewa Consultative Forum would soon meet on the matter, the leader who was active during the Babangida transition said “the conférence may be a trap for the core north going by happenings between the core north and the middle belt region.”

The Joint Action Committee of Northern Groups comprising of leaders from leading pro-north groups urgently came out with a position on Friday opposing the dialogue and masking its position as a pan-Nigerian position. The statement signed by Dr Hakeem Bab Ahmed argued that the problem of the north was security-related and that the president should work Harder in that line.

The real reason why the north is afraid of a conférence was however explained by the youth leader of the Middle Belt Forum, ,Hon Jonathan Asake, in an interview with the Sunday Tribune. He posited that the core north was afraid of the whole nation knowing that the north was no longer monolithic.

“We are liberating ourselves and that explains why you see us becoming more active before and after the civil war, the North looked like one solid bloc, until the eyes of the Middle Belt started noticing incredible unfairness in the way it was treated by its core-North counterpart, even when, in actual fact, the Middle Belt is in the majority.

“I am sorry to say that the media has helped to force the majority status on the Hausa-Fulani when talking about the North. That is only true when you take the two as a single tribal group. Yes, they have more numbers if you compare them to Tiv, Nupe, or Atayp, each standing on its own. But, on the aggregate, the Hausa-Fulani is a minority to the rest of the tribal groups of the Middle Belt, the way I have defined the Middle Belt.

“The Hausa-Fulani in the 19 northern states are not in the majority in Benue, Kwara, Kogi, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, FCT, Adamawa. They are hardly even present in Borno State – Boko Haram notwithstanding.

“The Kanuris are in the majority in Borno and Yobe. It is only 49 per cent of the population of Kaduna State; the Middle Belt of southern Kaduna is 51 per cent according to the 2006 census. It is just 45 per cent of Gombe State, it is not an overwhelming majority in Kebbi State. The Middle Belt is 30 per cent of Bauchi. The main area of strength of the Hausa-Fulani is: Sokoto, Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi and part of Gombe and Kaduna.

“So, you see, the Hausa-Fulani who, everyone has so made the lord of the North, are actually in the minority, unlike what you have in the South-west and South-east with the Yoruba and the Igbo. The Hausa-Fulani, though found everywhere in the 19 northern states, are really in minority if it comes as a bloc. The so-called minorities as an aggregate, are the majority. And that is the Middle Belt. If you doubt this, look at the 2006 census result, and the way votes in the 2011 elections were cast in our areas,” Jonathan said.

PoliticsKenyan Rioters Torch Church Over Murder Of Muslim Cleric by TeaParty(op): 6:31am On Oct 05, 2013
RIOTERS on Friday set a church ablaze in Kenya's port city of Mombasa in furious battles with the police sparked by the killing of a Muslim cleric, police said.

Witnesses said a protester was shot and wounded, as armed paramilitary police moved towards a mosque, whose leaders have been accused of links to Somalia's Islamist Shebab, insurgents who attacked a Nairobi shopping mall last month.

Riots were sparked after unknown gunmen assassinated a popular Muslim preacher and his three companions in a drive-by shooting late on Thursday, a killing that mirrored the murder of another cleric last year which provoked days of deadly riots.

Radical preachers have said the killing Thursday was an "execution" by the police, claims the force has denied.

"They have burnt the Salvation Army church and we are now trying to repulse them with tear gas," a senior police officer said.

Slain cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Ismail was viewed as the successor to Aboud Rogo Mohammed, a controversial preacher accused of links to Somalia's Shebab insurgents, who was shot dead in August 2012.

Like in the case of Rogo, radical preachers have said the killing of Ismail was an "execution" by the police, which denied the claims.

Thick smoke apparently from burning tyres rose around Mombasa's Masjid Musa mosque -- where both Rogo and Ismail used to preach -- while police fired tear gas and youths hurled stones in return. Several gunshots were also heard.

The Kwara state governor, Abdulfattah Ahmed has expressed support for the convening of National Conference being proposed by the federal government to discuss issues affecting the country.

The governor stated this when members of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrimage Commission paid him a courtesy call at government house in Ilorin.

He noted that those who are afraid of talking are the beneficiaries of inefficiency and imbalances plaguing the country, adding that there is the need to discuss and forge ahead as a country.

The governor explained that the problem of the country has nothing to do with the heterogeneous nature of the country but called on Nigerians to be free to discuss their problems.

The governor of Kano state, Musa Kwankwaso, has kicked against the proposed national conference and noted that the conference will only amount to a waste of time and resources, even as many Nigerians applauded the national conference initiative as announced by the president.

During a media chat in Hausa, broadcast live on some radio stations in Kano, northwest Nigeria, governor Kwankwaso also explained that the conference is not only unconstitutional but would create disunity among Nigerians.

He pointed out that members of the two chambers have the constitutional mandate to deliberate on national issues and take action accordingly.

It will be recalled that the Senate President David Mark threw his support for the proposed national conference after the President’s Independence day broadcast, where the he stated that an advisory committee will be set up for the conference where sensitive national issues will be addressed.

PoliticsFG, PHCN Workers Resolve Severance Package Dispute by TeaParty(op): 1:37am On Oct 03, 2013
The Federal Government on Wednesday announced that it had resolved the disagreement with workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

The workers had on Monday embarked on a nationwide protest following the Federal Government’s decision to hand over share certificates to the core investors in the PHCN successor companies.

A statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Dr. Goodnews Igali, said the payment implementation committee had resolved all contending issues and promised that before the end of this week, at least over 38,000 PHCN workers would have been paid their terminal benefits.

He blamed the hiccups experienced in the course of the payment on the large number of people involved, adding that the government had enough fund to complete the process, but was being careful to ensure that money was not paid into wrong accounts.

Igali commended the PHCN labour unions for their show of patriotism, just as he said, of the 47,000 employees, 45, 366 persons had so far been captured, and promised that the remaining persons would be captured after the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation had finalised its processes.

The Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Jonah Otunla, said at the end of the negotiation that his office was always ready to pay all outstanding payments after due processes had been complied with.

He also reiterated the resolve of the government to honour all obligations to the PHCN workers.

The Secretary General, National Union of Electricity Employees, Mr. Joe Ajaero, who spoke on behalf of the union, blamed the government for sending wrong signals as to what led to the stoppage of the payment midway.

He said on the part of labour, the hope was that in two weeks, the government should complete the process as they were not expecting it to be indefinite.

Ajaero urged all members of the union nationwide to suspend their planned industrial action and protest in order to watch if the government would be committed to ensuring prompt payment of the entitlements to its members.

You should try more as well by telling your Tinubu to also live by example.

Gbawe: Thank you. I have often said it that it is impossible for any President not to have some "achievements" to his/her name. Every regime can be credited with one thing or the other. Yet we all know Nigeria's potentials which , married to the right solutions, can put us on the path of greatness quickly.

As one example, the right President will no doubt understand he must bravely confront and reform the current bloated and profligately unwieldy structure of Nigeria that means 70% of our budgeted spending goes on recurrent expenses. This figure is in single digit for many nations of the world and analyst worldwide have said we can never develop if this hideous economic/administrative aberration continues yet we see absolutely no effort from GEJ in regard to this fundamental problem after 3 years as substantive President of Nigeria.

Instead, rather than lead by example, we see him adding to the problem as the poster child of mindless greed and profligacy. Three new air-planes (costing $151 million) added to a functional Presidential airfleet of 7, to make 10, by GEJ. This massive fleet is then maintained at the cost of N18 billion per year while the Police force is allocated N11 billion to equip its officers !!!

Some can hate Buhari and Ribadu all they want but can anyone honestly think either of the two would maintain an air fleet of 10 planes?

This air fleet example , sadly, is what typifies the leadership of GEJ. This is a President directly compounding, instead of tackling, the biggest problems of Nigeria. Mind you, those before him (OBJ and Yar Adua) were virtually the same. I.e limited, hollow and ephemeral "achievements" yet our major problems, exemplified by the revelations of this article, continue to worsen.

Finally "Ijaw Citicen" has revealed himself.we knew all along he's a yoruba guy.

donroxy: This is one of the reason some people challenged Nigerian Educational system, Check the meaning of ''Brother'' in the dictionary u will discovered it is a term used for people who shared some xtics and/traits to some extent !!!...... To start with U are A Human,African,Black,Nigerian,Southerner and Ijaw (If that makes ur I gazz to belong feel important) !!! grin

I guessed your knowledge of English is quite poor , why won't it be poor for an Arrogant, loud and proud self acclaimed VIP like you !! !!!

My sojourn in Bayelsa state despite being a Yoruba dude made me see Ijaw nation from Sagbama to Southern Ijaw,Nembe and Brass ,Ogbia !!!

I spent months on River Sagbama enumerating close to 22 communities from Toru-Ebeni to Toru-Orua,Angiama,Agalabiri,Ayama-ebeni,daganagbene et all !!!

I witnessed life in the creek, saw Humble and Hardworking people deprieved , Poverty,Hunger and Unfriendly Environment dominated with water ...... Deprieved by their own leaders !!

The CDCs and the community were all accomodating and cheerful as they never minced words in appreciating how Yorubaman, OBJ,made GEJ ..... And How Lagos and Portharcourt are the two london of Ijaw in Nigeria ......

I felt great when somebody could communicate Yoruba to me inside the creek and Offer of Plaintain from community to community !!!

It was also amazing when I discovered that two communities may be beside one another whereas communicating entirely different language yet cohabit maturely like brother/sister !!!

These are the Ijaw that I knew, happy people whose circumstances has turned violent !!!

So Bacanista, U re never the Ijaw that is worthy of being experienced, as I sleep and wake by an Ijaw man by my friend who apply better sense than u can everly think of, which thus reminds me of where I read ''Ijaw citizen'' called u ''faked Ijaw'' ..... That is non of my business actually !!!

He is even speaking as if He is Important to Ijaw course, ahaha grin

TrashCan sweating to belong, ok, U are Among now sleep crying baby !!

The bitterness and hate of you moslems towards GEJ is increasing day by day. If care's not taken you guys will die in it even before 2015.

HAH: Am still waiting from GEJ supporters to tell me anything contrary to the above supreme court judgement, or any provision of the law that allows Governors and president to have more than 8 years in office
