Send More’: Russian Arms Maker Mocks Macron after Taking Apart Captured French Weapons

A leading Russian arms manufacturer has claimed it had studied French guns captured in Ukraine and found them to be lacking.

The company’s comment suggested French President Emmanuel Macron should send more CAESAR howitzers to Kiev, so that they could find their way to Russia, armor maker Uralvagonzavod said on social media Thursday.

Sanctions guidelines shouldn't “block” traffic between Russia and its Kaliningrad exclave, top diplomat says


The EU is not seeking to impose a “blockade” on Russia’s Kaliningrad Region and will review its sanctions guidelines to avoid “blocking” traffic into and out of the exclave, the bloc’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said Thursday.

Lithuania’s actions to restrict transit to and from Kaliningrad, implemented under EU Commission guidelines, are aimed foremost at preventing the circumvention of anti-Russia sanctions imposed over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Borrell explained.

“[i]We want to make controls that could prevent any kind of sanctions avoidance, and not preventing the traffic. And the [European] Commission and the European External Action Service are going to review the guidelines in order to clarify that we do not want to block or prevent the traffic between Russia and Kaliningrad,” the diplomat told a news conference.[/i]

Over the weekend, Lithuania’s national railway operator banned the flow of sanctioned goods between the region and mainland Russia, citing sanctions guidelines from the European Commission. The restrictions, expected to affect roughly 50% of cargo flow between the exclave and the rest of Russia, have already hit road traffic as well, according to Kaliningrad officials.

While Moscow has branded the move an “economic blockade” of the region, both the EU and Vilnius insist the restrictions should not be perceived like that. Top Russian officials vowed a response to the “hostile” actions, the head of Russia’s Security Council, Nikolay Patrushev, promising retaliatory steps that would “have a serious negative impact on the people of Lithuania.”

“Of course, Russia will respond to hostile actions. Appropriate measures are in the works, and will be adopted in the near future,” Patrushev told media during his visit to Kaliningrad on Tuesday.

Germany says reducing Russian gas supplies is part of Moscow’s plan to stir up fear in Europe

The German government has accused Russia of leading an “attack” on Germany and the EU, by restricting gas supplies to the continent.

“Reducing gas supply via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is an attack against us – an economic attack against us,” the country’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday.

Speaking at an industry conference, Habeck added that Moscow is trying to stir up fear in Europe and that the gas-supply situation could lead to a crisis worse than the coronavirus pandemic.

Russian energy supplier Gazprom last week slashed natural gas flow to Germany via the pipeline by 60%, citing a technical issue. Turbines from a pumping station have not been returned from repairs in Canada, with Ottawa explaining that it was unable to return them due to the sanctions against Russia. According to media reports, Canada is now exploring ways to send the crucial parts without breaching the restrictions.


The reduction in gas supply affected the flows of Russian gas from Germany to other European countries, including France, Austria and the Czech Republic, prompting these and other EU nations to introduce emergency measures to reduce the use of natural gas.

The slowdown has hampered the EU’s attempts to refill its gas storage facilities, now about 55% full, according to Reuters, to meet a bloc-wide target of 90% by November, a level that would enable the region to get through winter if Russian supplies were cut further.

Homes have been destroyed in the province of Paktika and dozens of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble


At least a thousand people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in southeastern Afghanistan, officials have said.

The quake struck about 27 miles (44km) from the city of Khost, close to the country's border with Pakistan, and was at a depth of 31.6 miles (51km), according to the US Geological Survey.

The numbers of those killed and injured were reported by the country's state-run Bakhtar News Agency.


The death toll is likely to rise as some of the villages are in remote areas in the mountains and it will take some time to collect details," interior ministry official Salahuddin Ayubi said.

The majority of the fatalities were in the province of Paktika. Footage from the area, near the Pakistan border, showed victims being carried into helicopters to be airlifted from the area.

Bakhtar News Agency posted images of destroyed stone houses and the injured being treated in hospital.

Its director-general, Abdul Wahid Rayan, wrote on Twitter that 90 homes were destroyed in the province of Paktika and dozens of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble.


A severe earthquake shook four districts of Paktika province, killing and injuring hundreds of our countrymen and destroying dozens of houses," tweeted Bilal Karimi, a deputy spokesman for the Taliban government.

Moscow has threatened EU and NATO member Lithuania by saying it will take measures to defend its national interests unless the transit of goods to Russia's Kaliningrad exclave is swiftly restored.

Lithuanian authorities have banned the movement of goods which are sanctioned by the European Union across its territory - which includes the only rail route between mainland Russia and the province which is sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania.
Banned goods include coal, metals, construction materials and advanced technology.

Russia's foreign ministry has summoned Lithuania's top envoy in Moscow while the Kremlin said the situation was a "violation of everything". "The situation is more than serious," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "This decision is really unprecedented. It's a violation of everything." Russia's foreign ministry demanded Lithuania immediately reverses what it cast as an "openly hostile" move.

"If cargo transit between the Kaliningrad region and the rest of the Russian Federation via Lithuania is not fully restored in the near future, then Russia reserves the right to take actions to protect its national interests," the ministry said.

Lithuania said it was merely implementing EU sanctions, part of a swathe of measures intended to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invasion of Ukraine.

"It's not Lithuania doing anything: it's European sanctions that started working from 17 June," Lithuanian foreign minister Gabrielius Landsbergis told reporters in Luxembourg.

"It was done with consultation from European Commission and under European Commission guidelines," Mr Landsbergis said.

Lithuania's state-owned railway informed clients that from 17 June sanctioned goods such as steel and iron would not be permitted to cross Lithuania, he added.
