Foreign AffairsRussian Warship With ‘Unstoppable’7,000mph Hypersonic Missiles‘Sails Towards USA by Teazer4(op): 6:36pm On Jan 24, 2023
A RUSSIAN warship armed with “unstoppable” hypersonic missiles is sailing towards the US coast in a show of strength, reports claim.

The guided missile frigate Admiral Gorshkov has been closely monitored by Nato navies on its maiden voyage armed with 6,670mph Zircon weapons.

An unconfirmed Russian Telegram channel report says it was “spotted on radar in neutral waters of the Atlantic Ocean - at an effective salvo launch distance from the US coast”.

The nuclear-capable Mach 9 missiles have a reported range of 625 miles. The Russian defence ministry has not commented on the latest report.
It comes after the Royal Navy intercepted the Gorshkov as it sailed through the English Channel earlier this month.

More recently the Russian vessel was tailed by the Portuguese navy in the Atlantic and was expected to sail round Africa. But radar monitoring sites suggest the Gorshkov made an unexpected diversion.
One report said it had separated from its escort tanker ship Kama in the Bay of Biscay and headed west.
The Kama continued its routing to the south, passing the Azores.

The missile frigate was tracked to 800 miles west of the Portuguese island of Flores in the Azores, suggested ItaMilRadar. At this distance it would not yet be in range of the US for its deadly Zircons.
The frigate is also carrying Kalibr missiles, a type used in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin hailed it as "an important, if not momentous, event" when the vessel embarked from Arctic naval base Severomorsk on January 4.
He made clear this mission was intended as a show of strength to the West. And he boasted Nato could not match his “latest generation” of hypersonic firepower
The Zircon “has no equivalent in any country in the world”, he said
.
Putin went on: “I am sure that such a powerful weapon will allow us to reliably protect Russia from potential external threats and help ensure our country's national interests.”
Moscow has boasted that the Gorshkov is “the most dangerous enemy of surface ships in the world’s oceans” now it is armed with the new hypersonic missile.

Last year, the Zircon was test fired from the Admiral Gorshkov in the Barents Sea and hit a target 625 miles away in the White Sea.

The frigate’s captain Igor Krokhmal has said previously: “No one will see the missile launch or its flight. They will only see when the missile hits the target. A surface target, a coastal target. I don't think there will be anything to counter this in the next few years.”

The cutting-edge frigate Gorshkov was due to sail to the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean on this mission.
Next month it was expected to take part in exercises with the Chinese and South African navies near the ports of Durban and Richards Bay.

Foreign AffairsUS Determines Saudi Crown Prince Is Immune In Case Brought By Khashoggi’s Fiancé by Teazer4(op): 8:24am On Nov 18, 2022
CNN— The Biden administration has determined that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, should be granted immunity in a case brought against him by the fiancée of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, whom the administration has said was murdered at the prince’s direction.

A court filing was made by Justice Department lawyers at the request of the State Department because bin Salman was recently made the Saudi prime minister and as a result, qualifies for immunity as a foreign head of government, the request said. It was filed late Thursday night, just before the court’s deadline for the Justice Department to give its views in court on the immunity question and other arguments the prince made for having the lawsuit dismissed.

“Mohammed bin Salman, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is the sitting head of government and, accordingly, is immune from this suit,” the filing reads, while calling the murder “heinous.”

The decision is likely to provoke an angry reaction. The White House had hoped the July trip by President Joe Biden to Saudi Arabia would get the rocky US-Saudi relationship back on track but since then, relations have only continued to sour.

The relationship is being reevaluated, the White House has said, in the wake of an oil production cut by Saudi-led OPEC+ that the administration saw as a direct affront to the US. Members of Congress, already infuriated by the oil cut and calling for a reevaluation, will likely only be angered further if the prince is given immunity.

Hatice Cengiz, Khashoggi’s fiancée, and the Washington-based human rights organization that the late journalist founded, DAWN, initially brought the lawsuit against bin Salman and 28 others in October 2020 in the Washington, DC, Federal District Court. They allege that the team of assassins “kidnapped, bound, drugged, tortured, and assassinated” Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and then dismembered his body. His remains have never been found.

The executive director of DAWN, Sarah Leah Whitson, called the immunity request a “shocking outcome” and a “massive concession” to Saudi Arabia.

It’s really beyond ironic that President Biden has basically delivered an assurance of impunity for Mohammed bin Salman, which is the exact opposite of what he promised to do to hold the killers of Jamal Khashoggi accountable,” Whitson told CNN.

Foreign AffairsBiden Called Out For Failing To Bring Up COVID With China’s Xi by Teazer4(op): 11:05pm On Nov 14, 2022
Critics are calling out President Biden for failing to address some key issues facing the U.S. during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping Monday at the G-20. Rather than discuss the origins of COVID-19 or fentanyl coming from China, Biden opted to restart dialogue on climate change instead

According to a readout from the event, the two leaders also discussed economic competition, inflation and Taiwan. The "Outnumbered" panelists questioned why other serious topics were avoided.

Former State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus provided initial analysis, having attended high-level foreign meetings serving under President Trump. She began by commending the leaders for meeting for three and a half hours and praised their release of a joint statement condemning the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

She then noted that focusing on climate change was a "huge mistake."

"Why are we not talking about fentanyl -- the chemical precursors that go from China to Mexico -- the number one killer of young people? Why aren't we talking about the origins of COVID-19?," she asked. "Are we just going to let them get away with this?"

Fox News contributor Brian Brenberg argued Biden’s approach came off as weak.

All I see is President Xi in full-throttle domination mode on the world stage. And I'm watching our president walk into that, and he is not in a position of strength," Brenberg told the panel.

He then argued that, despite Ortagus’ commendations, Biden did nothing to move the United States into a position of power over China.

FOX Business anchor Dagen McDowell went a step further in suggesting that President Xi treats America as inferior based on Biden’s policies.

"It's not too much to ask of the president of the United States to stand up for the surviving families of the more than a million Americans who died from COVID," she said.

McDowell argued that it’s not too late to discuss COVID origins, as Americans are still looking for answers. She called out the president, saying he gave "antipathy" to the country rather than empathy.

"Biden can't stand up for all of those families," she said.

But he can stand up in front of the world at the top of that press conference and humble brag about the Democrats’ victory in the midterms, which is exactly what he did."

The White House did not respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment on why COVID-19 or its origins was not discussed between the two leaders.

Foreign AffairsGerman Gas Storage Could Quickly Empty After A Few Frosty Days - Klaus Mueller by Teazer4(op): 9:05am On Nov 05, 2022
BERLIN, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Germany's gas storage facilities could be quickly emptied if this winter gets really cold, warned the head of the country's network regulator in an interview with Spiegel weekly on Friday.

"Just a few freezing cold days are enough for a dramatic increase in gas consumption," Klaus Mueller said.

Mueller's Bundesnetzagentur would be in charge of gas rationing if it came to it, a scenario Germany wants to avoid at all costs via regular pleas to cut consumption by at least 20%.

As of Nov. 2, Germany's gas storage levels stood at 99.3% and Mueller said that Europe's top economy could keep going for around 9-10 weeks were it solely to rely on those tanks - provided it'll be a mild winter as was the case in 2021/2022.

Foreign Affairs21 Ships Dedicated To The Black Sea Grain Initiative Await Further Instruction by Teazer4(op): 4:09pm On Oct 31, 2022
21 ships dedicated to the Black Sea Grain Initiative await further instruction after Russia’s decision to withdraw from humanitarian food program

The organization overseeing the export of grain from Ukraine said that there are 21 vessels awaiting to leave the besieged country.

The Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul, which oversees the export of agricultural products from Ukraine, said that the ships have a capacity of more than 700,000 metric tons. One ship is chartered by the World Food Program and is carrying 30,000 metric tons of wheat destined for the Horn of Africa.

Before the war, Ukraine and Russia accounted for almost a quarter of global grain exports until those shipments came to a severe halt for nearly six months.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative, a United Nations-backed deal brokered in July, eased Russia’s naval blockade and saw the reopening of three key Ukrainian ports. The first vessel left Ukraine’s port of Odesa on Aug. 1 carrying more than 26,000 metric tons of corn. Since then, nearly 400 ships carrying a total of 9 million metric tons have departed Ukraine’s ports.

On Saturday, Moscow suspended its participation citing retaliation for Kyiv’s “act of terrorism” against Russian warships.

Foreign AffairsKremlin Reveals Next Step For Former Ukrainian Regions by Teazer4(op): 8:45pm On Sep 29, 2022
Russian President Vladimir Putin will sign accession treaties on Friday, his spokesperson has announced

The Kremlin has revealed when Russian President Vladimir Putin will sign treaties on the inclusion of the two Donbass republics, as well as the self-proclaimed states in Kherson and Zaporozhye, into the Russian Federation. The move follows referendums held in the respective territories.

The ceremonial signing will take place in the St. George Hall inside the Kremlin Palace on Friday at 3pm Moscow time, after which Putin will deliver a “voluminous speech,” according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. The Russian president will also personally meet with the heads of the new territories.

The announcement comes after the two republics and two self-proclaimed states made official requests to join the Russian Federation after having held public referendums on the issue between September 23 and 27. The move was overwhelmingly supported by the local population, according to official results announced late on Tuesday.

Peskov separately noted that Putin’s speech on Friday will not be a formal address to the Federal Assembly – the country’s parliament – stating that such a speech will be held in a completely different format and is yet to be announced.

As explained by Senator Konstantin Kosachev, the vice speaker of the upper house of Russia’s parliament, signing the treaties is only one of the key steps necessary to officially incorporate the new territories into the Russian Federation.

After Putin signs the treaties, they must be submitted to the country’s Constitutional Court to ensure they comply with Russian law. Once they are cleared, the documents have to be ratified by the lower house, the State Duma, and the upper house of parliament, the Federal Council. Only after that will the DPR, LPR, and the regions of Kherson and Zaporozhye officially become integrated into the Russian Federation.

The next session of the Federal Council is planned for October 4, according to chairman Valentina Matvienko, who said that if “everything is confirmed” the body will take the treaties on accepting the new territories up for consideration.

Foreign AffairsNo Such Thing As Limited Nuclear Conflict – Russian Ambassador by Teazer4(op): 12:48pm On Sep 29, 2022
Moscow is not threatening anyone, but if it’s pushed into using nukes, Washington can’t hide behind an ocean, Anatoly Antonov says

The US is risking destruction by engaging in nuclear brinkmanship against Russia, Moscow’s envoy to Washington has warned. There can be no such thing as a limited nuclear conflict, Anatoly Antonov said.

The Russian ambassador claimed that American military planners “apparently hope that the United States would be able to take cover behind the ocean” if nuclear weapons are used in Europe, and warned against such a gamble.

It is safe to assume that any use of nuclear weapons could quickly lead to an escalation of a local or regional conflict into a global one,” he wrote in an article published by The National Interest magazine on Wednesday.

The risk of escalation is coming from the US, and not Russia, Antonov said. Washington has been for decades encroaching on Russian borders with NATO expansion and dismantling various strategic arms control treaties with Russia, he pointed out.

Moscow’s complaints that its national security was being compromised were simply ignored, the diplomat added, which led the country to believe that the US simply wants “to gain security advantages, especially in confronting Russia” and “achieve global military dominance.”

The ambassador was involved with issues relating to nuclear reduction, military transparency and mitigation of strategic risks in the Russian Foreign Ministry before taking up his post in Washington

According to Antonov, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine was caused by the continuation of the same policies, to which Moscow had to respond militarily. If Russia believes that its existence is threatened by the US and its allies, it will use nuclear weapons, as is stated in its military doctrine, he added.

US officials “twist the statements of the Russian leadership” about this stance to further escalate the situation, the diplomat said. Washington is seeking to intimidate its own people as well as others with “sham Russian ‘nuclear threats,’” Antonov claimed.

He urged the US to tone down its hostile rhetoric and policies, to respect Russian national security interests, and join it and other nuclear nations in reiterating a pledge to work towards avoiding any use of the weapons.

Speculation that Russia could use its nuclear arsenal to compensate for failures in a conventional conflict have been rife in Western media since before Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in late February. The latest round of speculation and warnings from senior officials came in response to a national address by Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.

He said the US wanted to partition Russia in the same way as the Soviet Union was broken up after its collapse, and warned that Moscow would use all tools at its disposal to protect its territorial integrity.

Foreign AffairsKremlin Says Nord Stream Explosions ‘a Big Problem For Russia’ by Teazer4(op): 7:21pm On Sep 28, 2022
Damage to the natural gas pipelines will bring nothing but ruin for both Russia and EU, says spokesperson Dmitry Peskov

Moscow has denounced as “stupid and absurd” any allegations of it being behind the suspected explosions of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines earlier this week, stating that the incident actually creates many issues for Russia.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov explained that the damage to the pipelines posed a “big problem” for Russia as it had essentially lost its gas supply routes to Europe.

Both lines of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline were pumped full of gas and were prepared to deliver it to Europe at the time of the alleged explosion, said Peskov, adding that “this gas is very expensive and now it is all going up in the air.”

Peskov also noted that neither Russia nor Europe had anything to gain from the destruction of the pipelines, especially Germany, for which this incident poses a threat to the future development of its industry, as well as its profitability and competitiveness.

American LNG suppliers, on the other hand, have been making incredible profits after having multiplied their deliveries to the European continent, Peskov pointed out, adding that these companies are “very interested in maintaining these super-duper profits in the future.

While no suspects behind the incident have officially been named, the Kremlin spokesperson advised against making any official announcements before a proper investigation into the incident is carried out.

Peskov did, however, draw attention to US President Joe Biden’s statements from early February, when the American leader threatened to “bring an end” to Nord Stream 2. “What the US president meant by that, we don’t know,” admitted the Kremlin official, but highlighted the “borderline insane hysterical-euphoric reaction” of Polish officials who have already thanked Washington for sabotaging the pipeline.

The Kremlin’s response comes after some European and Kiev officials, including President Vladimir Zelensky’s adviser Mikhail Podolyak, suggested that the attack on the pipeline was a “false flag” operation carried out by Russia in order to make Ukraine look bad and to further drive energy prices up in the EU.

However, after the former Polish FM publicly thanked the US for the apparent sabotage on Twitter, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova urged the EU to treat the US as the possible culprit behind the attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines. She said Moscow would call for a UN Security Council session over the incident.

A number of Western nations have repeatedly opposed Russia’s undersea pipelines delivering gas to Europe, both before and after Moscow launched its military operation in Ukraine. The recently built Nord Stream 2 network, which never went into operation due to Germany’s refusal to certify it, has drawn particular opposition from countries like the US and Poland, which has called for the pipeline to be “totally scrapped.”

Foreign AffairsEU Countries At Odds Over Possible Gas Price Cap by Teazer4(op): 4:10pm On Sep 28, 2022
BRUSSELS, Sept 28 (Reuters) - European Union countries were at odds on Wednesday over whether to cap gas prices in the bloc, with France, Belgium and 13 other states stepping up their call for the move opposed by Germany and others.

Eyes were on the EU executive European Commission, which was expected to present an analysis on the feasibility of the bloc capping gas prices during a meeting of diplomats from the 27 EU member states on Wednesday.

The Commission's document would not include legal proposals, sources said, but rather present an assessment of options countries could use to tackle high gas prices, which are stoking record inflation across the bloc and threatening a recession.

A group of 15 countries including France, Italy, Spain and Poland urged the Commission on Tuesday to propose a price cap on all wholesale gas transactions to help rein in surging prices

On Wednesday, Belgium's energy minister Tinne Van der Straeten suggested the measure could be designed as a "flexible price corridor" to address volatile price swings.

But with Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark among those arguing that a gas price cap would harm efforts to contain Europe's energy crunch, there were doubts as to whether any potential proposal could win sufficient support to become law.

It's highly questionable whether gas price caps are the right measure," an official from one EU country said, adding that saving energy should be countries' priority.

The 15 countries behind the letter would not have a big enough majority to approve a new EU law without support from others - setting up a potential clash among member states if the Commission were to propose a gas price cap in future.

Those reluctant say capping prices could leave countries struggling to secure supply in competitive international markets this winter - concerns also raised by the Commission itself.

Industry also weighed in to the debate, with Europe's steel, cement and fertilisers lobbies among those to call for urgent "EU-wide measures aimed at addressing the impact of natural gas prices on industrial competitiveness" in a joint statement.

Discussions on possible price caps will continue at a Friday meeting of EU energy ministers, who are also set to approve a package of measures proposed by Brussels last week, including windfall profit taxes on energy firms.

Foreign AffairsExplosions At Nord Stream Pipeline Sites At Time Of Leaks by Teazer4(op): 6:20pm On Sep 27, 2022
Seismologists confirm underwater blasts were detected at the pipeline failure locations

Scientists in Denmark and Sweden registered underwater explosions near the Nord Stream pipelines on Monday, when several major leaks were reported. Sabotage is now suspected as a key reason for the damage.

There is no doubt that these were explosions,” seismologist Bjorn Lund of Sweden’s National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT on Tuesday.

The Danish military released aerial footage of the leaks, showing large spots and visible bubbling in the water. Nord Stream 1 suffered two leaks northeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, while Nord Stream 2 was damaged south of Dueodde, a beach located at the island’s southernmost tip, the military noted.

Earlier in the day, Moscow said it has been looking into the reasons behind the leaks, suggesting the pipelines were targeted in an act of sabotage. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that currently “no option can be ruled out” on the causes of the incident.

The Nord Stream 1 pipeline was completed in 2011. Construction work on Nord Stream 2 began in 2018, and suffered numerous delays due to political pressure and sanctions from the US. The pipeline was finished and pressurized in September 2021, but never actually got online.

Two days before the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, the German government put its certification on indefinite hold, and has repeatedly rejected any suggestions, both domestic and from Moscow, to open the pipeline.

Foreign AffairsEnergy Crunch Will Hurt Like 2009 Crash If Europe Gets It Wrong by Teazer4(op): 4:04pm On Sep 27, 2022
Governments are spending hundreds of billions of euros to ease the pain of high gas prices. It may not stop a deep recession.

By Craig Stirling and Elena Mazneva+Follow
September 26, 2022

The economic damage from the shutdown of Russian gas flows is piling up fast in Europe and risks eventually eclipsing the impact of the global financial crisis.

With a continent-wide recession now seemingly inevitable, a harsh winter is coming for chemical producers, steel plants and car manufacturers starved of essential raw materials who’ve joined households in sounding the alarm over rocketing energy bills.

Building on a model of the European energy market and economy, the Bloomberg Economics base case is now a 1% drop in gross domestic product, with the downturn starting in the fourth quarter. If the coming months turn especially icy and the 27 members of the European Union fail to efficiently share scarce fuel supplies, the contraction could be as much as 5%.

That’s about as deep as the recession of 2009. And even if that fate is avoided, the euro-area economy is still on track to spend 2023 suffering its third biggest contraction since World War II — with Germany among those suffering the most.

Europe is very clearly heading into what could be a fairly deep recession,” said Maurice Obstfeld, a former chief economist at the IMF who’s now a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

The bleak outlook already means that, seven months on from the outbreak of war in Ukraine, governments are shoveling hundreds of billions of euros to families at the same time as they bail out companies and talk of curbs on energy-usage. And those rescue efforts may still fall short.

Adding to the pressure on companies and consumers, the European Central Bank is also squeezing the economy as its new laser-like focus on surging inflation drives the fastest hiking of interest rates in its history. ECB President Christine Lagarde said Monday that she expects policy makers to lift borrowing costs at the next several meetings. Traders are already pricing in a jumbo 75 basis-point hike at the next monetary policy meeting on Oct. 27.

The outlook is darkening,” Lagarde told EU lawmakers in Brussels. “We expect activity to slow substantially in the coming quarters.”

Foreign AffairsBuying Twitter Wouldn't Make Sense 'if We're Heading Into World War 3'-Elon Musk by Teazer4(op): 2:07pm On Sep 07, 2022
In July, Elon Musk backed out of the deal reached in April with Twitter whereby the South African-born American entrepreneur would buy all of the social media company's shares for a total of $44Bln.

Twitter has since sued Musk for failing to honor his obligations.

Elon Musk was prompted to "slow down" his buy-out of Twitter because of fears the world was “heading into World War 3”, Business Insider reported.

Private text messages were purportedly sent by Musk on 8 May to a banker at Morgan Stanley, which was financing part of the $44Bln Twitter purchase deal.

In these messages, the billionaire Tesla chief executive cited an upcoming speech from Russian President Vladimir Putin, coinciding with Russia's 77th anniversary of the country's victory over Nazi Germany on 9 May.

Putin had said on the day that Russia's decision to begin a special military operation in Ukraine on 24 February was the "only right decision" amid the West’s preparations for an “invasion of Russia."

Let's slow down just a few days. Putin's speech tomorrow is really important. It won't make sense to buy Twitter if we're heading into World War 3," Twitter's lawyer reportedly said while reading out Musk's texts during a court hearing on 6 September.

Twitter's lawyer said the texts proved that Musk was in contractual breach and had backtracked on the deal because of personal financial concerns.

Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, was cited as denouncing the characterization of the texts in court as "utter nonsense”. He claimed this would become evident after publication of the “full text chain”. Spiro argued during the hearing that Twitter has not found any evidence to support its theory, saying: “Their theory about what really happened isn't what really happened.”

Foreign AffairsThree People Killed In Copenhagen Shopping Mall Shooting by Teazer4(op): 5:59am On Jul 04, 2022
Police have arrested one suspect who they described as a 22-year-old ethnically Danish man, in connection with the shooting

Three people have been killed and three others are in a critical condition after a shooting at a shopping mall in Copenhagen, police in Denmark have said.

A 22-year-old Danish man was arrested after the shooting at the Field's shopping centre, one of the largest in Scandinavia, Copenhagen chief inspector Soeren Thomassen said.

He said the victims included a man in his 40s and "two young people," without giving further details. Several others were injured, three critically, he added.

Chief inspector Thomassen said police first received reports of a shooting at 5.37pm on Sunday and arrested the suspect 11 minutes later.

He said there was no evidence that the perpetrator was working in conspiracy with others.

He added that the investigation did not suggest a racist motive or otherwise, but that could change.

Footage shows the alleged gunman to be a man wearing knee-length socks, a vest or sleeveless shirt, and holding what appeared to be a rifle.

Images from the scene showed people running from the shopping centre.

"People first thought it was a thief... Then I suddenly hear shots and threw myself behind the counter inside the store," eyewitness Rikke Levandovski told broadcaster TV2.

"He is just shooting into the crowd, not up in the ceiling or into the floor," she added.

Another witness who gave her name as Isabella told public broadcaster DR: "My friend and I... suddenly we hear shots. I hear about 10 shots and then run as fast as we can into a toilet.

"We squeeze into this tiny toilet where we are around 11 people."

British singer Harry Styles was expected to perform at a venue close to the mall on Sunday night but his concert was called off by order of police.

Foreign AffairsRussia Confirms It Has 'completely Liberated' Severodonetsk by Teazer4(op): 9:39pm On Jun 25, 2022
As we reported earlier, the mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk said it had fallen to Russian forces.

Now, the Russian Ministry of Defence has confirmed the report in a Telegram post.

"The units of the LPR People's Militia, with the support of Russian troops under the command of Army General S.V. Surovikin, as a result of successful offensive operations, completely liberated Severodonetsk and Borovskoye, Voronovo and Sirotino of LPR," it said.

"Thus, the enemy's attempt to turn the industrial zone of the Severodonetsk Azot enterprise into a stubborn center of resistance was thwarted."

The city, which is in the region of Luhansk, had become a fierce battleground in recent weeks and had seen Russian and Ukrainian forces fighting street-by-street.
Its fall will be a key victory for Russia, which is aiming to take all of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region (made up of both Luhansk and neighbouring Donetsk).

Foreign AffairsPutin Lambasts US As Acting Like 'God's Messenger,' Claims World Order Is Changn by Teazer4(op): 4:49pm On Jun 18, 2022
Putin accused the U.S. of attempting to 'cancel' nations that do not accept western values

Russian President Vladimir Putin blasted the U.S. in speech from St. Petersburg Friday, accusing Washington of believing it is "God’s messenger" and warning that the world order is changing.

"After declaring victory in the Cold War, the United States proclaimed itself to be God’s messenger on Earth," Putin claimed. "They seem to ignore the fact that in the past decades, new powerful and increasingly assertive centers have been formed."

Putin’s speech, which was delayed for over an hour due to an alleged cyber-attack, focused almost solely on attacking the U.S. and its Western allies.

Russia has come under immense international condemnation following the illegal and deadly invasion of Ukraine four months ago – an incursion that has resulted in the greatest threat to European security since World War II.

But Putin, who has long relied on propaganda to drive the political temperature in Russia, suggested Moscow had been hit with severe sanctioning due to Western fears that the global order is changing.

"Our colleagues are not just denying reality. More than that, they are trying to reverse the course of history," Putin claimed. "They consider themselves exceptional. If they are exceptional, that means everyone else is second rate."

The Kremlin head accused the U.S. of attempting to "cancel" states that do not accept western values.

Putin claimed Moscow is just the latest victim to be hit by "crazy" and "insane" sanctions and said Western efforts would not stop the world order from changing

"Nothing lasts forever," he said. "While planning their economic blitzkrieg, they did not notice, simply ignored the real facts of how much our country had changed in the past few years."

The U.S., European and other western allies have not only slapped Russia with tough sanctions in an attempt to stymie its war efforts, but have moved to block the sale of Russia's largest income earners – oil and natural gas.

The European Union, which imported a whopping 40 percent of its energy needs from Moscow prior to its invasion of Ukraine, has said it will cut 90 percent of its Russia oil imports by the end of the year.

Additionally, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen vowed earlier this month to address the other 10 percent as well.

But despite high inflation, its flagging ability to supply its armed forces in Ukraine and rising internal frustrations over economic pains at home, Putin on Friday claimed the West’s efforts were not working.
