Attempts to ditch Russian fossil fuels have triggered energy inflation in the West, president says

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that energy inflation in Western countries should be blamed on their own mistakes, and not on Russia. The EU is committing economic suicide by trying to wean itself off from Russian energy resources, Putin said.

“Such an economic auto-da-fé, suicide is, of course, an internal affair of European countries. We must act pragmatically, proceed primarily from our own economic interests,” he said during a video conference on the oil sector.

According to Putin, Europe recognizes that it cannot yet completely abandon Russian energy resources. Nevertheless, they have set such a task, “without paying any attention to the damage that they have already caused to their own economy.”


The sanctions and declarations about the desire to give up on Russian energy have contributed to the growth of oil prices across the world,” he stressed.


“Today we see that for absolutely political reasons, because of their own ambitions and under pressure from their American overlord, European countries are imposing more and more new sanctions on the oil and gas markets. All this leads to inflation, and instead of admitting their mistakes, they are looking to assign guilt somewhere else,” Putin said.

Russia says it has hit a US and European arms shipment in a missile strike near Ukraine's Lviv region, which is itself near the Polish border.

The units have “completed the assigned combat mission,” Kiev claims


The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed on its social media networks on Tuesday evening that its servicemen holed up at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol have been ordered to surrender.

“The garrison ‘Mariupol’ has completed the assigned combat mission. The highest military command issued an order to the commanders of the units located at Azovstal to save the lives of the personnel,” the Ukrainian military statement explained. According to Kiev, while holding positions at Azovstal, its soldiers prevented Russian troops from operating in other theaters.

The two countries have been embroiled in a full-blown conflict since February, when Moscow attacked the neighboring state, following an eight-year standoff over the fate of the Donbass.

Kiev insisted that the Azov neo-Nazis and members of its regular forces had “prevented the implementation of the [alleged Russian] plan for the quick capture of [nearby] Zaporozhye, and did not allow access to the administrative border of the Donetsk and Zaporozhye regions.”

After the last Ukrainian soldier leaves Azovstal, the battle for Mariupol will be effectively over and Russia will have gained total control of the strategically vital city.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a speech to lawmakers has accused Brussels of power abuse and has also pledged to resist the EU’s agenda of “gender madness and a liberal Europe.”

On Monday, Orban took his oath of office after being elected in April for a fourth consecutive term. In his usual manner, the premier did not spare harsh statements when addressing parliament.

Commenting on the sixth package of sanctions which the EU is now preparing in response to Russia’s military attack on Ukraine and which includes a gradual ban on Russian hydrocarbons, Orban reassured parliament that his country would not stand in the way of imposing new restrictions against Moscow, as long as these do not threaten Hungary’s energy security. Stressing that Budapest should maintain an independent policy within the European Union, Orban argued that the same applies to NATO membership.

“NATO is a firm supporter, but it will not defend Hungary for us… The most urgent task is to strengthen the Hungarian army and make it a real army,” the prime minister stressed

Beijing rejects the group’s demand to halt support for Russia amid sweeping sanctions


China has responded to the G7’s request that Beijing cease support for Russia amid extensive Western sanctions, stating that the country decides its own position and policy based on the “merits of the matter itself,” and that the seven member nations should focus on their own issues instead of intervening in other countries' internal affairs.

The statement came after the foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7), which includes the US, Germany, Italy, Canada, the UK, France and Japan, issued a statement on Saturday calling on Beijing to “resolutely” urge Russia to stop the war in Ukraine and refrain from providing economic and military assistance to the Kremlin. The group also insisted that China “support the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine” and “urge Russia to stop its military aggression against Ukraine.”

The lengthy statement went on to warn Beijing “not to assist Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine,” “not to undermine sanctions imposed on Russia” and not to justify Russia’s actions in Ukraine through the use of “information manipulation, disinformation and other means.”

During a press conference on Monday, Chinese Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian slammed the demands and urged the G7 countries to stop imposing illegal sanctions and provoking other countries and instead focus on other important global and internal issues.

"We call on the G7 countries to truly focus on peace and development throughout the world, to stop applying double or even multiple standards, to stop sending military aircraft and ships to the borders of other countries with or without reason to demonstrate their strength," Zhao told reporters during a press conference on Monday.

Zhao also insisted that the seven nations “stop going to other countries to organize ‘color revolutions’ at every opportunity” and stop imposing sanctions on sovereign countries using “extraterritorial jurisdiction.”

The G7 also expressed concern regarding China’s involvement in the situation in and around the East and South China seas, advising Beijing to avoid threats, coercion, intimidation measures and the use of force, demanding that China grant impartial monitors access to Xinjiang and Tibet. The group also called for peace and stability in Taiwan and expressed support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly and WHO technical meetings.

China regarded these remarks as a gross interference in its internal affairs and claimed that the G7 statements “seriously violated the basic norms of international relations.”

“What I want to stress is that Taiwan-related, Xinjiang-related, Tibet-related and Hong Kong-related affairs are purely China's internal affairs and brook no interference from any external forces. The G7 has neither the right nor the qualification to point fingers at China's internal affairs,” said a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the UK on Monday.

“We urge G7 members to manage their own country's affairs, solve their own human rights issues, and do something serious to restore peace in Europe, instead of smearing other countries, interfering in other countries' internal affairs, and making trouble everywhere,” concluded the embassy spokesperson.

The American fast-food chain McDonald's has decided to completely withdraw from the Russian market, and has started selling its assets across the country, the company announced in a press release on Monday.

The Wall Street bank predicts only a moderate recession due to sanctions


Russia's economy is coping better with Ukraine-related Western sanctions than could be expected, JPMorgan Chase said in a note to clients dated last week and made public on Monday.

According to the biggest US investment bank, business sentiment surveys from the country “are signaling a not very deep recession in Russia, and therefore imply upside risks to our growth forecasts.” It also cited high-frequency indicators such as electricity consumption and financial flows, which signal that the economy is in better shape than predicted.

“The data at hand therefore do not point to an abrupt plunge in activity, at least for now,” the bank’s analysts state in the note, as cited by Business Insider.

JPMorgan also backtracked on its earlier forecasts of a 35% drop in Russian GDP in the second quarter and 7% for all of 2022, now saying the figures are likely to be much less alarming. The bank did, however, note that the impact of current and potential sanctions will be felt, and that the country’s economy would be in far better shape if Moscow had not launched its military operation in Ukraine.

The impact of sanctions will continue building in coming quarters, we expect. The GDP profile, therefore, looks increasingly likely to be consistent with a drawn-out, but not very sharp recession,” the analysts predict, noting that export orders are showing a particular decline.

Russia has faced unprecedented economic restrictions since it launched a military operation in Ukraine, drawing intense condemnation from the West. The US has, among other measures, placed an embargo on Russian oil, one of the country’s major export commodities, while the EU is currently preparing its sixth package of sanctions, and also considering an oil ban. Russia has been cut off from the SWIFT interbank messaging system, while banks, organizations and individuals have been sanctioned, and assets including half the country’s forex reserves have been frozen. Russia has responded with countermeasures and managed to bring the national currency, the ruble, back to its pre-conflict level after a historic drop, but there is still much uncertainty among analysts as to the future of the economy.
