Foreign Affairs / Russia Warns US Of ‘consequences For Global Security by Teazerr4: 12:48pm On May 28, 2022 |
Moscow’s ambassador to Washington was responding to media reports that the US will ship multiple launch rocket systems to Kiev The risk of escalating the conflict in Ukraine would be considerably heightened if the US provides Kiev with long-range multiple launch rocket systems, Russia’s ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, warned on Friday. Earlier, several US media outlets reported that the Biden administration had given the green light to the deliveries. When asked for comment on the claims, Antonov said the allegations have to be verified first, and that so far, no official announcement had been made by US officials. The ambassador expressed hope that “common sense will prevail, and Washington will not take such a provocative step,” adding that he and his colleagues from the Russian Foreign Ministry had repeatedly warned the US leadership that the “unprecedented pumping” of weapons into Ukraine “considerably increases risks of an escalation of the conflict.” Antonov said that if the media reports are true, and the Biden administration intends to send M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS systems to Kiev, the Ukrainian military would have the ability to strike Russian cities – which he described as unacceptable for Moscow. By supplying more weapons to Ukraine, Antonov stated, the US would undermine the prospects for peace in the Eastern European country. He noted that Washington is becoming increasingly involved in the conflict, which could have “unpredictable consequences for global security.” The official called on the Biden administration to stop the “pointless and highly risky practice of pumping weapons” into Ukraine. Antonov also urged officials in Kiev and Washington to “accept reality,” which could help “make progress on the path of diplomatic settlement.” The Russian ambassador’s remarks came shortly after the New York Times ran a report, citing unnamed US officials, saying the Biden administration had given the green light to the delivery of the US-made long-range multiple launch rocket systems to Ukraine. The paper said that an announcement could be made as early as next week. The sources cited in the report say the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (M142 HIMARS) could be included in the next tranche of military aid to Ukraine, along with 155-millimeter howitzers, which Washington is already supplying to Kiev. Defense Department press secretary John Kirby declined to comment on the alleged decision. Similar reports also appeared on Thursday on CNN. Ukraine has been calling on America to provide them with the rocket system, or its cousin, the M270 MLRS, which, according to Kiev, could help turn the tide in the conflict with Russia. According to US media reports earlier this month, until recently, the Biden administration had been wary about supplying the M270 MLRS or M142 HIMARS to Ukraine, concerned that the Kremlin could see it as an escalation, due to the systems’ longer range and greater destructive power compared with the weapons the US has already shipped to Kiev. Of particular concern is the possibility of these weapons being used by the Ukrainian military to hit targets in Russia, several media outlets report. On Friday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba tweeted, “Heavy weapons on top of our agenda, and more are coming our way,” following talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The New York Times said the message could indicate a breakthrough on the topic of multiple launch rocket systems. Although the Ukrainian military does have similar Soviet-designed systems, the HIMARS has longer range, is said to be more accurate, more versatile, and can be loaded with satellite-guided and tactical ballistic missiles. Each missile is pre-loaded into disposable launch tubes and can be quickly mounted onto the truck and discarded after firing, which arguably makes the system easier to operate compared to older, Soviet-designed models. Since Russia attacked Ukraine in late February, the US has been actively providing military aid to Kiev. Earlier this month, President Biden signed the Lend-Lease Act into law, with the aim of expediting the process of sending military equipment to Ukraine. Last Saturday, Biden also approved legislation that earmarked an additional $40 billion in assistance to Ukraine Rt news

Foreign Affairs / Ukrainian Refugees Losing Benefits In Europe by Teazerr4: 12:40pm On May 28, 2022 |
Some of the support programs are expiring next month Millions of Ukrainians rushed westward in late February after Russia launched an offensive against their country. Initially welcomed with open arms by European nations, they are now seeing the support dwindle – at least when it comes to the benefits offered by host countries. European nations are now deciding how much they want to spend on Ukrainian refugees, and some of the freebies offered in the first weeks are about to expire. 1 No more free rides Starting next month, Germany’s Deutsche Bahn railway company will no longer give free tickets to anyone possessing a Ukrainian passport. In March, the rail monopoly offered free transit to Ukrainian passport holders traveling to the major German cities of Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg and Munich. It also issued free “helpukraine tickets” to those asking for them. While new arrivals will still be provided with free rides, the free tickets will be abolished. The German government said needy Ukrainians will be receiving social benefits starting in June, so the end of the program won’t restrict their mobility much since they will be able to buy universal €9 ($9.65) monthly tickets for public transport. Germany is just one of several European nations that decided to discontinue free tickets for Ukrainians. Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland have made similar decisions. Poland will keep some train rides free for vulnerable Ukrainians, such as elderly men, women and disabled people. 2. Vacating hotels Popular holiday destinations are reportedly planning to displace thousands of Ukrainian refugees that were given lodging at beachfront hotels. In Spain, as the tourist season gets underway, rooms currently occupied by refugees will need to be vacated to accommodate paying visitors, some of whom made their bookings months ago. According to the newspaper El Pais, as many as 12,000 people face eviction. The situation is no different in Bulgaria, where starting next month only three hotels at the popular Sunny Beach resort will still accommodate Ukrainian refugees, according to Radio Bulgaria. Some 38,000 were asked to move out of their temporary homes by the end of May. 3. Welfare cut Some host nations are also reducing the cash aid that they pay to refugees. In Bulgaria, the daily allowance will go down from around $22 per person to $8 next month. The Czech Republic will no longer pay no-questions-asked welfare of $217 per month for five months to Ukrainians. The government will deduct the cost of free housing from the first month’s payment and demand proof of need from recipients in subsequent months. Czech authorities are encouraging Ukrainians to get jobs or risk losing the benefits. 4. Benefits-triggered crime In some cases, the assistance that Ukrainian refugees are receiving in European countries exposes them to local crime. Stanimir Stanev, a senior Bulgarian police official, revealed in a report to the country’s parliament this week that cars from Ukraine are being targeted by thieves interested in their license plates. Because the government decided not to collect road tolls and parking fees from refugees, some crooks are taking advantage of this by replacing their plates with stolen Ukrainian ones, Stanev said. Foreign Affairs / Elon Musk Asks Why Media Gives Mass Murderers The Attention They Desire by Teazerr4: 8:37am On May 28, 2022 |
Tesla mogul Elon Musk called for 'tight' background checks in response to elementary school massacre Billionaire Elon Musk scolded the media this week for giving attention to mass shooters, saying the exhaustive coverage played into their twisted motives. "Regarding recent events, the shooters are obviously doing this to generate the most amount of attention possible," Musk wrote, according CNBC. "Why is the media doing exactly what the mass murderers want?" The email came on the heels of the tragic shooting Tuesday when a gunman killed 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Musk's point mirrors a years-long debate in media circles regarding how much attention is given to mass murderers, as their horrific acts are newsworthy but many feel they are out for attention and infamy. Musk, whose companies Tesla and SpaceX both have ties to Texas, told CNBC he supports "tight background checks" for gun sales and limiting assault weapons to people such as gun range owners, or anyone in a "high risk location, like gang warfare." Musk added, "I strongly believe that the right to bear arms is an important safeguard against potential tyranny of government. Historically, maintaining their power over the people is why those in power did not allow public ownership of guns." https://www foxnews com/media/texas-school-shooting-elon-musk-media-murderers?dicbo=v2-c53a254d2bf1e17ce75862848418d76d Mynd44 Seun Lalasticlala mukina2

Foreign Affairs / Ukraine Risks Merging With “land Of The Poles” – Former President by Teazerr4: 7:47am On May 28, 2022 |
The country is facing a “complete destruction” of its sovereignty amid the conflict with Russia, Viktor Yanukovych warned Ukraine is facing a complete loss of its sovereignty and, potentially, a merger with Poland, former President Viktor Yanukovych has warned. The ex-president, who was ousted in the 2014 Maidan coup, released an extensive address on Friday in which he shared his thoughts about the roots of the ongoing turmoil and the potential fate of the country. The current role of Ukraine as an instrument against Russia was outlined by the collective West long before the conflict between Moscow and Kiev broke out in late February, the ex-president believes. “In 2014 already, Ukraine was designated by certain Western countries as a territory from which a total weakening of Russia should begin. Precisely as a territory, and not as an independent state, not as people wishing to live in peace with all its neighbors, not excluding Russia,” Yanukovych stated. The current conflict may bring fatal consequences for the country, he went on. Ukraine risks not only losing vast territories “in its south and east” but also a “complete destruction” of its sovereignty, Yanukovych believes. The threat stems not only from the military conflict itself but also the efforts of the Ukrainian authorities to cozy up to the country's western neighbor Poland. Earlier this month, Polish President Andrzej Duda and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hopes that the two countries would “no longer have a border” between them, while Kiev announced plans to grant special legal status to Polish citizens. The strengthening ties will not bring Ukraine’s purported “European dream” any closer, but rather threatens a “merger” with Poland, Yanukovych warned. Rt news 1 Like

Foreign Affairs / British Mercenaries In Ukraine Face Death Penalty by Teazerr4: 7:37am On May 28, 2022 |
A criminal case against the foreign fighters has been sent to court Three suspected mercenaries from Britain and Morocco, who joined the Ukrainian military and were later captured by the forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), could be facing the death penalty there, the republic’s General Prosecutor’s Office said on Friday. Viktor Gavrilov, the judiciary spokesman, revealed that an investigation into the activities of “a group of foreign mercenaries” who allegedly “took part in the preparation and implementation of hostilities against the DPR,” had been completed and a criminal case had been “fully formed.” “The materials of the case have been transferred to one of the republic’s courts for consideration which could result, taking wartime into account, in the application of capital punishment – the death penalty – to the accused,” Gavrilov told journalists The Prosecutor General’s Office specified that the investigation had confirmed that Brits Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill, along with Moroccan Ibrahim Saadoun, were involved in crimes under three articles of the DPR Criminal Code: the “commission of crimes by a group of persons,” the “forcible seizure of power or forcible retention of power,” and “mercenarism.” According to the DPR Criminal Code, mercenarism, which is internationally considered a crime, can be punished by imprisonment for three to seven years, and the forcible seizure of power – from 12 to 20 years. Aggravating circumstances or wartime could lead to the death penalty. Russian military spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said earlier that the best thing the foreign mercenaries could expect was a “long term in prison.” Pinner and another alleged British mercenary, Aiden Aslin, have called on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to facilitate their exchange for one of the Ukrainian opposition leaders, Victor Medvedchuk, who had been detained by Ukrainian forces. London, however, has apparently limited itself to calling Pinner and Aslin “prisoners of war,” rather than “mercenaries,” and said they should be treated accordingly. In early May, Andrew Hill published a video in which he said that after coming to Ukraine he realized “it was hell” there. He also claimed that the foreign mercenaries he was fighting with were “really bad people and sadists.” “I understand everything has been done wrong and I hope for leniency from the Donetsk People’s Republic,” he said. Russia attacked the neighboring state, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014. The German- and French-brokered Minsk Protocol was designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state. Rt news

Foreign Affairs / US Launches ‘china House’ by Teazerr4: 5:43pm On May 26, 2022 |
The dedicated team will coordinate policy to counter Beijing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced the launch of a new ‘China House’ within the State Department, made up of a team of diplomats focused on coordinating policy to confront Beijing. The diplomat unveiled the new team during a Thursday speech at George Washington University. The scale and scope of the challenge posed by the People’s Republic of China will test American diplomacy like nothing we’ve seen before,” Blinken stated. “I’m determined to give our Department and our diplomats the tools they need to meet this challenge head on, as part of my modernization agenda,” he said, describing the new body as a “department-wide integrated team” that will work with Congress where needed. The State Department chief insisted the directional shift, aimed at recentering China in the US’ foreign policy crosshairs even as Washington shovels billions of dollars into the war in Ukraine, is not about ramping up conflict with China. “We aren’t looking for conflict or a new Cold War. To the contrary, we’re determined to avoid both,” Blinken said. Instead, the US’ strategy is to “invest, align, compete” with what Blinken called “arguably the most important relationship that we have in the world going forward.” He also called China “the most serious long-term challenge to the international order.” “We will invest in the foundations of our strength at home – our competitiveness, innovation, and democracy. We will align our efforts with our network of allies and partners, acting with common purpose and in common cause. And harnessing those two key assets, we will compete with China to defend our interests and build our vision for the future,” the chief diplomat said. While the Biden administration has doubled down on its ‘one China policy’, warning Beijing against any actions that might be perceived as impinging on Taipei’s independence, Blinken insisted that Washington’s approach had not changed – instead, it was “Beijing’s growing coercion” and “increasingly provocative rhetoric and activity” that was destabilizing the region. Foreign Affairs / Ukraine Threatens EU Member by Teazerr4: 4:05pm On May 26, 2022 |
Something could happen” with the oil pipeline running to Hungary, a Ukrainian official has warned Ukraine has “a wonderful lever of pressure” on Hungary via the Druzhba – which translates to ‘Friendship’ – oil pipeline, Ukrainian energy minister adviser Lana Zerkal claimed on Thursday. Speaking during an online discussion at the Kiev Security Forum, Zerkal criticized the policy of the Hungarian government, which is blocking a sixth round of EU sanctions, one which would ban Russian oil. The Western countries have been imposing harsh restrictions since late February, when Moscow launched its military attack on Ukraine. In Zerkal’s opinion, Hungary is using the Russian military offensive as an instrument to achieve its own goals and thinks that now it “can demand anything” from the EU. “Ukraine has a wonderful lever of pressure in its hands – it’s the Druzhba oil pipeline,” Zerkal said, adding that “something could happen” with Hungary’s separate line of Druzhba. “And, in my opinion, it would be very appropriate if something happened to it. But, again, it is in the hands of the government and the president to make decisions on political issues, to decide if we really want to talk to [Hungarian President Viktor] Orban in a language that he understands and that he imposes on the EU, or if we are not ready for that yet,” Zerkal stressed. Zerkal later took to Facebook to clarify “her humble opinion” that “caused a diplomatic scandal,” saying “facts are a stubborn thing.” “But, to calm the situation, it is worth specifying that the official position of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine on this matter is unchanged. Ukraine is a reliable transporter of energy carriers to Europe,” she stressed. While Zerkal's words have already started to spread through Hungarian media, Budapest is yet to comment on the issue. In a letter to European Council President Charles Michel, seen by the Financial Times, Orban reportedly told the EU that a bloc-wide ban on Russian oil would cause serious problems for his country’s economy and thus “urgent investments” from Brussels were needed. Hungary is almost entirely dependent on Russia for its gas imports and relies on Moscow for more than half of its imported oil. The country gets 65% of its oil through the Druzhba pipeline from Russia. Addressing possible sanctions against Russia’s oil, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto previously said that Budapest would back a ban on maritime shipments, but not on deliveries through pipelines. Despite the lack of consensus within the EU, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Monday that the bloc’s 27 member states “will reach a breakthrough within days” on an embargo. Any decision on EU sanctions must be made unanimously. Ukraine has been consistently calling on the European countries to stop buying Russian energy resources, claiming that by doing so they are financing Moscow’s military offensive. Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused European leaders of committing economic “suicide” by attempting to give up Russian energy Rt news. 1 Like
