The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has refuted reports of some national newspapers that it has called off its strike, describing them as baseless. However, what has become evident is the crack that has risen in the rank and file of the association as our correspondent gathered that the meeting that held on Wednesday night till the early hours of the morning at Vinyl Hotel, Abuja, almost degenerated into fisticuffs and name calling. While some members wanted the strike to continue citing federal government’s refusal to accede to their 24- point demand, others demanded for the industrial action to be suspended, moving for the impeachment of the president, Dr Kayode Obembe. The importance of transportation to human endeavour cannot be overemphasised. This informed the decision of the Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola led administration in Osun State to take a bold step with the recent introduction of the Omoluabi Scholars bus service to ease the transportation of students in public schools. It would be recalled that the unacceptable state of education in the state when Aregbesola’s administration came into the saddle of governance informed the call for an education summit, attended by great educationists and intellectuals of all persuasions. Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka made time to personally attend the summit that made recommendations on which basis a complete overhaul of the education system of the state was done. One of the most important conclusions of the summit was the restructuring of the system into three basic categories, Elementary, Middle and High schools. Grade 1–4 is the elementary school, Grade 5–9 is the middle school, while Grade 10–12 is the high school. The hallmark of the new education policy in the state was the enhancement of welfare for both the teachers and students of all public schools in the state. Following the re-classification exercise, some schools were merged while a few others were phased out. The federal government has increased the price of gas to power plants from the present $1.50 to $3.30 per metric cubic feet (MCF) while it plans to add about 370 million MCF of gas to power by year end. While the move is expected to further lead to an increase in electricity tariff, government has said it is targeting an additional 5,000 mega watt (MW) to the national grid as gas would hopefully become more available following the increase. The development was announced yesterday by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke, who also disclosed a new initiative that would see the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) lead in an effort to pay off about N25 billion owed gas suppliers by the power generating companies. By Victor Makolo & Joseph Tijani SHATTERED CHANDELLIERS Being able to read and write is not the sole purpose of education but just a pre-requisite. Education seeks to build the human mind and prepare it for a world of endless possibilities. The principal said looking grimacingly at the graduands who were his major audience although other students from lower classes and parents were present in the hall. He continued that you can answer examination questions doesn’t make you educated, it only means you’re erudite. To be truly educated means you’re able to apply all that you have learnt in class, from books and in life to proffer solutions to life’s big challenge. To our graduands today, this isn’t the finish line but the very beginning of a new one, be……… While the principal was still speaking, tears fumed in my eyes and I felt like exploding. I could still feel dad’s firm grip as he held my feeble hands years ago in an airport, There is no limit to what you can achieve my pearl dad would always say these words to me each time I come back home with an excellent result (and which by the way was all the time). Amidst the principal’s speech and the occasional chatter and laughter of the audience, I couldn’t hear any more words. It felt like I was sucked up in a vacuum and the very quiet of the vacuum seemed to mock me as all I could hear was the echo of my loud thoughts. As much as I tried to hold back my tears my eyes twitched and the tears in them strolled down my checks. Usually, people think of their past in retrospect but the irony of it all was that I began to think about my future in retrospect, the placid periscope with which I occasionally peeped into my bright future gradually became very dim. Reality gently faded into a nightmare I never wanted to wake up to. I asked myself, How do I cope without dad and mum? I never even got a chance to tell my parents how much I really loved and appreciated them, I just felt they should know! These rhetorics occupied my mind for long months after the riot. I had chosen to ignore the lucid picture that reality had just painted and believed that somehow, the body found in the charred remains of what used to be home for us wasn’t dad’s as well as I also didn’t want to think that mum was among the 38 that were massacred in her office and burnt alongside the building. Although I never ceased to curse those heartless rioters that didn’t stop at killing the workers at mum’s office but also left with a few severed heads: maybe as some form of souvenir or trophy. It was all thanks to Lt Col. Fatunbi that I was even pry to this information, a lot of people do not even know how or where their loved ones were killed. I wiped the tears from my eyes with Tobi’s handkerchief as she wrapped her arms around my shoulder while I leaned my head on hers. I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard ……the head girl, Ochanya Peters for her speech. I asked Tobi what was going on and she didn’t even look surprised that I wasn’t paying attention, she just said softly; it’s time for your speech as head girl and best graduating student. Everyone was clapping and as I walked towards the podium, I received series of congratulatory handshakes streaming from friends, teachers and even academic rivals alike. My heart was beating so fast and my hands were trembling, this was so unlike me because I was not the shy type and I didn’t even have stage fright, but I know exactly what made today different. Before I say anything, I would like us to observe a minute silence for the departed souls, I said while trying to hide the nervousness I felt. When the one minute silence elapsed, I said with a trembling voice: There is no limit to what we can achieve if we put God first and set our minds to it, these were the very words of my hero and Mentor- my Father, I could no longer hide the tears again and I began to cry, Dad I wish you were here to see your pearl in her gown….. Before I could say anymore words, the Bri-KwaIbom woman walked up to me and gave me a big hug, she then said to the audience, a round of applause for our very own Ochanya Peters. Everybody clapped till I was back to my seat. O.P person dey look for you outside, a classmate of mine whispered to me. Uncle Alfred, you made it! I screamed when I went outside and saw my only uncle (Dad had just one brother and much was an only child). I ran into his arms and held him tight. Junior also came outside and joined me in his arms, it was then it occurred to me that this (the 3 of us) was all that was left of the Peters family. How is Lagos Uncle? Junior asked looking at him when we finally got out of his arms. Lagos is fine, he replied, and my wife cannot wait to see you all. At this point, I knew it was going to be stupid asking if he now has a child because if he did, he would have mentioned that in his just concluded reply. I felt sad when I remembered how long he’d been married. Where is the colonel? Uncle Alfred asked. He is on the high table, he is one of the guests of honor, Junior replied. Before he could say anything, I asked would we be going to Lagos with you? Yes, he replied. I almost thought you didn’t get my letters when I didn’t get any reply from you. I’m sorry dear, it’s just that the past few months have been really hectic for me as I have not really been in the country. I flew in a week ago and decided to surprise you. Uncle Alfred met with the colonel later that evening, thanked him for everything and told him he’d always keep in touch. Here is my telephone number, the colonel said when we got to the airport. Thank you sir, I’d call you, as soon as I have my own landline set up. He bade us farewell and drove off with Tobi whose eyes were already drenched and ready to burst into tears. While the 1987 Zaria crisis was at full tilt, she meandered her way through the thick smoke that covered the whole building that was set ablaze. The toilet was no longer as safe as it was 30 minutes ago. Kashe su! Kashe arna!! Which loosely translates to kill them, kill the infidels was, the chant she could hear from the rioters. When she finally made it out, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her to only God-knows-where. Everywhere seemed like a dead-end and the only place that seemed safe enough was the forest to her right. She didn’t even know how long she had been running and how far off civilization she’d wandered she was even too terrified to notice her bleeding foot. It was a little past seven ‘o’clock and eventide was gradually giving way for nightfall, her strength waned and that was not helping matters. She needed to find a place to hide and pass the night hoping she would not wake up dead in the morning. She felt hope at last when she came to what seemed like civilization and also looked calm and quiet. She made her way to an uncompleted building across the road. While she sat down on a block and tried to catch her breath, she fell asleep…………..to be continued next week. www.monitor9ja.com

The entry of a popular pharmacist, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, in the Lagos governorship is currently generating ripples within the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as aspirants have commenced moves to prevent him from picking the ticket. The Ikorodu-born politician who recently met with some leaders of the PDP in the state, including the state executive council members of the PDP, is said to have commenced tours to local government chapters of the party. Apart from Agbaje, another contender for the ticket is the current Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro who is rumoured to have met with some stakesholders of the party recently at an undisclosed location. “The meeting was not a declarative one per se, but it was just to feel the pulse of members on the direction the party should go,” said a source close to the minister who did not want to be mentioned. Other aspirants, Babatunde Gbadamosi, a nephew to former Minister for National Planning, Rasheed Gbadamosi, and the governorship candidate of the PDP in last election, Dr. Ade Dosunmu, are said to be touring the 20 local governments. www.monitor9ja.com http://leadership.ng/news/379544/agbajes-entry-jolts-lagos-pdp-aspirants-begin-guber-bid

The debate sponsored by the American-based International Republican Institute and put together by the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) for a live transmission between two front line candidates in the August 9 governorship election could not hold yesterday because of the absence of one of the candidates, Iyiola Omisore. The debate was expected to hold between the incumbent governor, Rauf Aregebsola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Sen Iyiola Omisore, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate but Omisore did not show up for the event. The debate only turned out to be almost an interview for Governor Aregbesola where he advanced his mission without any challenge. Though no official reason was given for his inability to attend the debate, Omisore’s spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi had earlier said in a statement that Omisore could only attend such debate on the ground that there is adequate security. By Victor Makolo & Joseph Tijani Illustration by Tayo Oyewolu Version of Events It’s quite amazing how time flies mom said to me with a stern look in her eyes that suggested that this was probably the most ‘matter of fact’ things she’s ever had to say to me. Who’d have ever thought I’d wake up one morning only to realise how much of a fine young woman my little girl has grown into she said with tears in her eyes, but it hurts to even think that a young shoulder such as yours could be saddled with such an enormous responsibility as this. This time, I couldn’t help but ask, Mom, What is all this about? I’m lost. Now, she burst into tears and cried out in agony, Ochanya, take care of Junior, he’s all you’ve got now and you’re all he’s got. I’d always be with you sweetheart. She stretched out her hands to touch me, but somehow, the harder she tried, the farther she got from me, the tears that flowed down her cheeks to her neck and blouse became as thick as blood, I felt the urge to run out and grab her, but I was stuck. It was like a wind-like force that kept pushing her farther away until she gently faded into the atmosphere, it was then I realized that what seemed like our kitchen was actually a cemetery, and what seemed like a floor was actually a pool of blood. Mummy!!! Was the scream that tore through the ambience of my hostel room and struck a ’2-second fear into the hearts of my roommates. O.P (short for Ochanya Peters), na wetin o! others asked, Hope its well o? And some said, Abeg no disturb yourself, Na ordinary dream. But I sat on my bunk motionless and speechless, panting very fast with my mum’s words echoing from the nightmare (or should I say ‘day-mare’ since it was afternoon and we were having our siesta: A ritual I seldom observed) and ringing loud in my mind. Breathe…take a deep breath and exhale slowly My best friend, Tobi, said with her arms wrapped around my shoulder and her left palm moving in sync with her calm and reassuring voice. As hard as I tried, my heart was still pounding and my head aching from the loud voices inside of it. Ding! Dang!! Ding!!! Dong!!! Came the sonorous sound of the jingled bell. It was really an unusual time to have the bell jingled and some of my roommates wished it wasn’t some form of emergency, that it was just that ‘simpleton’ of a timekeeper mistaking ‘p.m.’ for ‘a.m.’ again simply because he slept and woke up to see a cloudy weather. But for me, the loud noise that came from the jingled bell had a rather adverse effect on me as it helped pacify (rather than aggravate) the clanging I felt in my head by temporarily being the only sound I could hear for a few seconds, I secretly wished the noise of the bell could permanently replace the voice in my head. No longer had that wish been nursed by my thoughts than we heard a really loud explosion. The whole school was thrown into a state of pandemonium as the second and third explosions went off simultaneously. All we could see from afar off was the thick black smoke rising into the clouds from different directions. Discombobulated too, the teachers tried to quieten the rather excited students, although, they themselves obviously looked restive and even Mrs. Akpan the English teacher couldn’t control her shivering fingers and the profuse sweat coming from her body. Funny enough, I chuckled when she forced out the words: Everybody, calm down, no need for control, everything is under alarm! well, the fact that almighty Mrs. Akpan the Bri-KwaIbom woman, (a title she earned from her being so much of a grammarian and linguistic perfectionist. Bri-KwaIbom is coined from the words- British and AkwaIbom) could make a grammatical blunder of this magnitude only suggested that she was speaking with her tongue in her cheek and everyone should really be worried. At last, the principal stepped into the hall we were asked to converge in and calmed us down. Through that pin-drop silence that his terrifying presence imposed on everyone, came the words, there is no need whatsoever to be frightened, you hear that noise outside? That is the voice and cry of dissatisfied Nigerians protesting against the tyranny of military dictatorship. That was really convincing considering how fierce, brutal and inhuman the military could be when discharging Oga‘s commands. Little did we know that the whole of Zaria was actually in shambles and that the soldiers were actually saving rather taking lives. Fatimah the asthmatic fainted while some others peed in their pants when three military trucks drove into the school. Many wondered: could this be it for us? All we want to do is learn, we are not all anti-military regime like our principal. At this point, the Bri-KwaIbom woman was counting her rosary and probably saying her last prayers. By this time, the principal gulped in saliva almost so loudly I could hear the sound even in my imagination, he asked the discipline master to hold fort while he goes out to have a word with the uniformed men. Before he even got out, the soldiers had already taken position round the school, a move which disappointed our initial suspicions as it looked like they were fending off enemies and not killing us. It was now obvious how much of a coward even stone-hearted Mr. Ajibade the principal could be when face to face with the brutal powers that be or so we thought. He summoned up courage and went out to meet one of them that was walking towards the hall. They talked for a while and the principal walked back in and asked the other teachers to confirm if all the students were in the hall. Lo and behold Junior wasn’t there alongside a couple of Form2 boys. I felt my heart leap into my mouth, my stomach chummed and my tongue could taste the bitter acid of fear on hearing that my brother was not in the hall. How could I not have searched for him? No, how could he not have crossed my mind? Could this be what the dream was all about? I began to gasp for breath, Tobi couldn’t help but burst into tears, and like two village women mourning the demise of a loved one, we looked each other in the eye, ran into each other arms and cried together. The principal and some other teachers set out to look for the missing or M.I.A (missing in attendance) students when two military men voices were heard a mile off. Come here! They said, Your hands where I can see them. After a couple of minutes, I heaved a huge sigh of relief as I saw my brother and three others frog jumping with mango and banana on their heads. I couldn’t not believe I almost got a heart attack over someone that obviously was enjoying himself in the school orchard, what was most annoying was how they could still remain in the orchard despite the sound of successive explosions and gunshots. Well, the series of slaps to the head and face they received streaming from the military men to our civilian teachers seemed a fair price to pay compared to the 24 strokes and one week of digging penalty that would have awaited them had they been caught on a normal day. It was getting dark gradually and unlike other days, the darker the night got, the sicker we got. I wished I had that kind of Joshua’s powers to command the moon and the sun to stand still over us. It was a little past seven O’clock when a high ranking officer drove into the school with some infantries. I could literarily see the glow on Tobi’s face when she saw her father in his uniform step out of the van and walked into the hall. After a few words with the principal, Tobi was called out, before she left, I silently begged her to put in a word for me and my brother if daddy was to take her home. After all, I thought, what are family friends for? Okay Tobi said she wriggled her way out of the thick crowd and went to meet her father. Few minutes later we heard Ochanya and David Peter, come out here. We did as we were told and Lt Col Fatunbi drove us all the way to his house in the barracks……………………………to be continued www.monitor9ja.com

Reacting to the attack, General Buhari said, “I am personally involved in a clearly targeted bomb attack today at about 2:30pm on my way to Daura. “The unfortunate event, clearly an assassination attempt, came from a fast-moving vehicle that made many attempts to overtake my security car but was blocked by an escort vehicle. “We reached the market area of Kawo where he took advantage of our slowing down and attempted to ram my car and instantly detonated the bomb which destroyed all the three cars in our convoy. “Unfortunately, when I came out of my vehicle, I saw many dead bodies littered around. They were innocent people going about their daily business who became victims of mass murder. “Thank God for His mercy, I came out unhurt, but with three of my security staff sustaining minor injuries. They have since been treated in hospital and discharged,” he said. www.monitor9ja.com

The federal government through the ministry of communication technology and Bayelsa State government at the weekend signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reduce the telecommunication levies charged operators in the state by 50 per cent as part of the initiative to make Bayelsa a smart state. The ministry and the Broadband Council is promoting a “Smart State’’ initiative geared at engaging governors and relevant authorities at the state and federal levels to address the issue of multiple taxation impeding the acceleration of the roll out of critical infrastructure across Nigeria. The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Mr. Godwin Emefiele has been elected chairman of Committee of Central Bank Governors of the ECOWAS sub-region. Emefiele who was elected by fellows central bank governors from ECOWAS countries at the 31st Meeting of the Committee of Governors of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) in Abuja on Wednesday also hinted that the January 1, 2015 date for the sub-regions monetary union may not be realized. Nigeria’s Emefiele lamented to his fellow governors that “over the years, appraisals have continued to show that the level of macroeconomic convergence in the Zone remained inadequate relative to the set targets.” According to him, “since 2009, no two countries satisfied all the four primary convergence criteria consistently for two consecutive years. Accordingly, we have missed several launch dates for the monetary union.” This development he said “may have informed the decision of the Heads of State and Government to approve the Modified Gradualist Approach to monetary integration by 2020.” Emefiele noted that “the performance of Member States’ on the convergence scale relative to that required for the establishment of a monetary union is still inadequate. ” Also member countries’ business cycle synchronization in terms of real GDP, inflation, broad money and interest rates remained weak, and their level of institutional preparedness for the monetary union remain inadequate.” He then urged other central bank governors “to objectively examine the numerous challenges before us, assess the state of preparedness of Member States for monetary integration at short notice, and realistically appraise the directive of the Heads of State and Government for a Modified Gradualist Approach to monetary Integration by 2020.” Their role he stated, “is to honestly appraise this directive and design strategies to ensure a sustainable monetary union in the zone.” In doing this, Emefiele urged other ECOWAS countries “to think outside the box, realistically assessing and providing innovative options as well as the costs and benefits of implementing the Modified Gradualist Approach.” He however said that member countries “have continued to make remarkable progress towards the establishment of a common market and the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Integration Protocols and Convention as well as significant progress towards the reforms of their financial systems.” www.monitor9ja.com

The letter was read yesterday by Senate President David Mark at plenary. He noted that the approval of the fund, which would be sourced from external borrowing, would enable the armed forces to confront insurgency more forcefully. The letter said: “You are no doubt cognizant of the on-going and serious security challenges which the nation is facing, as typified by the Boko Haram terrorist threat. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm that its members in Osun State are being denied their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) by INEC, in what seems a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise them in the August 9 governorship election in the state, since only those who possess PVCs will be allowed to vote. In a statement issued in Benin yesterda by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said INEC had resorted to asking those who daily throng its offices in Osun which party they belong to, and that almost all those who have identified themselves as APC members have been told their PVCs are not ready. ‘’This is nothing but systematic rigging from source,’’ it said, wondering why INEC, which is expected to be a neutral umpire in the election, will resort to actions that portray it as partisan and bereft of credibility. APC wondered whether this is the reason why INEC had to push its REC in Osun aside to pave the way for a malleable REC who will do the bidding of the PDP. The United State Consul General to Nigeria, Jeffrey Hawkins, on Monday disclosed that he would lead a team of about 30 American observers to Osun State for the August 9 governorship election in the state. Hawkins spoke at the opening ceremony of a four-day workshop organised by the US Mission in Nigeria for press and public affairs officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), drawn across the country. He said the U.S will closely monitor the election because it was key to cementing Nigeria’s democracy. “I will be in Osun on the election day. We will be deploying about 30 observers in similar magnitude with that of Ekiti. “The Osun election is the last litmus indicator for future elections in Nigeria. Please be transparent with the process. “We have a wide programme working with the INEC through the United States Agency for International Development and through various training sessions to support the work of INEC and we have a close collaboration with the commission’s chairman, Attahiru Jega and others. “So there is a strong commitment from the U.S to democracy in Nigeria whether it is on a localised level or at the national level,” said Hawkins. The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Akogun Iyiola Oyedepo on Sunday blamed the challenges confronting Nigerians on the dearth of visionary leaders. Oyedepo noted that there are many Nigerians in positions of responsibilities today, but have no vision for the country as most of them just found themselves in politics accidentally. He said the electorate were becoming more enlightened as elections were now getting more credible. He said democracy must start from the State Houses of Assembly where the lawmakers needed to checkmate the excesses of state governors. This, he said, would stop the executive from being dictatorial in the handling of state issues. The PDP boss opined that the only way to curb terrorism in Nigeria was through intelligence services and called on the Federal Government to embark on training and retraining of those responsible for intelligence gathering. He expressed support for the creation of state Police as advocated by delegates at the National conference. He appealed to politicians and their followers to shun violence before, during and after the 2015 general elections. He advised Nigerians and Kwarans in particular to vote for candidates who are people friendly. www.monitor9ja.com
