The devaluation of naira is adversely impacting on the Nigerian manufacturing sector as manufacturers lament high cost of production. According to sectoral players, the attendant impact of plunging oil price, already sending economic and political shockwaves around the world and the devaluation of the naira are spiking the cost of production. For instance, the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) is already exploring ways to mitigate the consequences of the anticipated economic backlash. The MAN hurriedly summoned an emergency meeting of its Economic Policy Committee (EPC) in Lagos to discuss the issues and the way forward. Sources revealed that members lamented the severe impact of the erosion of the Nigerian Naira’s purchasing parity on their business and the attendant increase in prices of their raw material, machineries, spare parts and all other import-dependent procurements. The Amaju Pinnick-led Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, would score yet another goal in transparency and accountability today, when they return a whooping $3 million(N510 million) to Government. The money is part of the appearance fee of the Super Eagles to the World Cup in Brazil which the Federal Government paid for the team to play their second round match of the World Cup against France. The Eagles had boycotted training and threatened not to play the match against France if the allowance from the FIFA largesse was not paid. As at the World Cup, FIFA had not paid the money but the team held Nigeria to the jugular before President Goodluck Jonathan fell to their blackmail and, through the former Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo, sent the money in a chartered aircraft to Brazil to the team. Unfortunately, the team concentrated more in sharing the money than the match at hand. The sharing was on till 3 to 4 am on the same day they had a 5 pm match. They lost to France 2 – 0 at the Estardo Nacional in Brasilia to exit the World Cup. The players were so fatigued and paid the price. That was the beginning of a new phase of crisis in Nigerian football. There had been fears and speculations that when FIFA finally pays the money, the $3 million released by Government might develop wings. www.Monitor9ja.com |

Brent crude fell $2.43 to $70.15 a barrel on Friday. The last time Brent crude was priced this low was May 2010. U.S. crude settled down $7.54 at $66.15 a barrel. The price of Brent dived by more than $5 a barrel yesterday after OPEC announced no change to its production plans following a meeting in Vienna. The 12 OPEC members decided to maintain production at 30 million barrels per day, as first agreed in December 2011. Several members of OPEC had pushed for a cut in production to boost the price. But Saudi Arabia, the largest producer within the oil cartel, favoured maintaining production at its current level. Most members of the oil grouping require an oil price above $80 dollars a barrel to balance their budgets, but Saudi Arabia and some of the gulf states can sustain a lower oil price for a while thanks to state financial holdings and other diversified investments. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it would withdraw N500 billion from the banking system through the recent increase in the cash reserve requirement of banks. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the police invasion of the National Assembly last week is the equivalent of a coup as it congratulated members who jumped the fence to save Nigeria’s democracy. In a statement issued yesterday by its national publicity secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the APC called for an independent investigation with a view to stopping a reccurrence. The party congratulated the members of the National Assembly, especially those who scaled the high gates of the National Assembly, for the sacrifices they have made to defend the nation’s democracy. It said the lawmakers, by their action, risked their lives for the survival of Nigeria’s democracy, hence they are heroes. The APC said, “The lawmakers who united across party lines last week to restore the integrity of the House of Representatives and prevent an attempt to truncate our democracy are heroes, because if they had not done what they did, no one could have imagined the consequences of the orchestrated police action against the National Assembly. “The senators who stormed the House in sympathy and solidarity with their colleagues, including Senate President David Mark, should also be commended by all for resisting tyranny and for facing up to anti-democratic forces.’ The party said using weapons to attack an arm of government and preventing it from carrying out its functions are tantamount to a coup, adding that the tear gas that was fired into the National Assembly by an invading force of policemen is a chemical weapon. Courtney Dike, the 19-year-old Super Falconettes player who rejected the $7,000 paid to her by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for participating in the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup, has revealed the reason for her decision. Premium Times reports that in an e-mail to spokesperson of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Ademola Olajire, Dike stated: I would like to respond to what I have been reading on the internet about rejecting bonuses. I am delighted to play for Nigeria whenever called upon. I knew before leaving for the U-20 World Cup that I would not accept any bonuses. Acceptance of prize money is against NCAA regulations (the division 1 collegiate governing body) here in the US, so that is the main reason for rejecting it. Knowing this beforehand, I still chose to represent the country because I believed the experience would be more valuable than the money, and I was right. Dike is a student at Oklahoma State University, and the younger sister of Super Eagles player Bright Dike. |
