More details have emerged after a Nigerian man killed his wife in the United Kingdom.
 
According to information gathered, the tragic incident happened at 259 Exning Road, Newmarket, Suffolk — a suburban terrace in the market town of West Suffolk.
 
It was gathered that the lifeless body of Taiwo Owoeye Abodunde, a nurse and mother of three was found lying on the floor of her living room.
 
The police’s grim discovery was an unplanned encounter, prompted by a follow-up visit related to a previous report of assault made against her estranged husband, David Olubunni Abodunde, according to a correspondent from TheNation.
 
According to the police, the visit was scheduled as “a pre-arranged meeting to gather evidence in relation to the assault allegations made against Olubunni Abodunde on November 27 by Taiwo, which led to his arrest.”
 
The police report indicated that they arrived at 259 Exning Road, Newmarket, Taiwo’s home address, at 9:55 am on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Upon entering the residence, they discovered her unresponsive on the living room floor. Despite prompt medical attention, paramedics declared Taiwo dead at the scene.
 
Olubunni Abodunde, the husband, was found inside the residence and subsequently arrested on suspicion of her murder. He was then taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre for questioning and later appeared at Ipswich Crown Court and Suffolk Magistrates’ Court for a preliminary hearing.
 
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is also investigating the force’s response as officers had been called to the address earlier. A spokesperson for the IOPC said: “We can confirm we have received a referral from Suffolk Constabulary in relation to this incident and we are carrying out an assessment to determine what further action may be required from us.” The intervention of IOPC was prompted by a suspicious failing by the Police over a previous correspondence with the Taiwo’s family on November 27, 2023, over previous assault.
 
The Police added: “On Monday 27th November 2023, Taiwo contacted Suffolk Police reporting an assault by Olubunni on her that day and a further assault from 15th August 2023. Olubunni was arrested on suspicion of both assaults at 10:23am 27/11/2023. He was released from police custody at 6:20pm 27/11/2023 with police bail conditions. The Police Bail conditions imposed were: Not to go to 239 Exning Road, Newmarket, CB9 0AY. Not to contact Taiwo Abodunde directly or indirectly except via a third party to arrange child contact.

“The incorrect address of 239 Exning Road, Newmarket on the bail condition should have in fact been recorded as 259 Exning Road, Newmarket. When Suffolk Police attended Taiwo’s address on Tuesday 28th November, this was for a pre-arranged meeting to gather evidence in relation to the assault allegations that were made against Olubunni Abodunde on 27th November which led to his arrest. Because of these recent police contact with Taiwo, Suffolk Constabulary have made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

“We will keep you updated on this process. We also want to make you aware we initially identified two scenes in relation to what happened but following our enquiries we have removed one scene, but one remains in place. This continues to be a location where evidence is present.”
 
More than anything else, this chance finding by the police of the dead formed a leg in the intrigue and misfortune suffered by a family that was enmeshed in marital distrust, domestic abuse and the struggle for economic survival right out of the sleepy towns of Ipoti Ekiti and Igogo Ekiti. The late Taiwo was a native of Igogo Ekiti and Olubunmi from Ipoti Ekiti. They both met at Otun Ekiti in 2004 during a 7th Day Adventist Church social-religious camp for young people. It wasn’t love at first sight, but Taiwo would later agree to date and marry Bunmi following persistent pressure and persuasion from the husband.
 
Both Ipoti Ekiti in Ijero Local Government Area and Igogo Ekiti in the Moba Local government area are located in Ekiti state -Southwest geopolitical region of Nigeria. Known for its myths and festivals, the two towns are roughly 15 miles of each other. Igogo Ekiti is popular for its royal folklore of Queen Oronsen who while married to King Rerengejen fled the palace in anger because of the conspiracy against her. She would be immortalised with a terra cotta image near ‘Igbo Oluwa’ a sacred forest in the town. Natives make annual ritual sacrifice of different articles, such as dried fish, colanut, alligator pepper, and bitter cola in return for her spiritual protection of the kingdom.
 
Interestingly, the tradition and folklore of Ipoti Ekiti is also woven around a wife who was assured after Ifa divination that she would have three male issues on the account of faith, belief and offering to placate the gods. The late Taiwo and her estranged husband, Olubunmi Abodunde, have three male children David 16, Daniel 14 and Jetemi 11. The husband, Olubunmi Abodunde, 47-year-old self-declared engineer migrated to the United Kingdom in November 2022 with the three children to join his wife of 17 years. But their marriage, which withstood several challenges, soon began to disintegrate over controlling behaviour, domestic violence, allegations of infidelity and distrust. He became verbally violent, kept throwing fist and calling the wife unprintable names, said Adekunle Owoeye, the twin brother to the late Taiwo.
 
 It’s hard to overstate what a cataclysmic episode this was for the couple and the people of the two neighboring towns of Igogo and Ekiti where the case had dominated airwaves and street conversation since last week. Adekunle Owoeye, speaking on behalf of the late Taiwo’s family recalled an incident some years back in Igogo Ekiti when Bunmi and Taiwo attended an event where the couple exchanged hot arguments and fists over where to sleepover after. Bunmi was said to have hit the wife and the mother-in-law who protested his violent behaviour. The matter was later resolved by the two kings of the towns; the Onigogo of Igogo Ekiti HRM Oba Sunday Adewunmi, Okinbaloye the 1st and the Olupoti of Ipoti Ekiti, HRM Oba Oladipupo Kolade.
 
HRM Oba Sunday Adewunmi, Okinbaloye said he was very disheartened to hear about the sudden demise of the late Taiwo because of the hard-work put in by the royal house to make the marriage work and the guidance he provided for Taiwo to help the family in their pursuit for better life overseas.
 
“My sister had endured a lot of assaults from Bunmi over petty marital issues,” said the twin brother Adekunle Owoeye.
 
Adekunle described the past 18 years as a ‘living nightmare’ for the late sister. But he added: “I was elated and relieved that my sister was traveling overseas where domestic violence cannot happen. She had not long earlier retrieved her academic certification from the husband after he hid it for 10 years over envy to stop Taiwo from earning her own income independently.” 

The relocation was indeed ominous as family members recalled the worry and excitement that greeted the news of their relocation to the United Kingdom. Elder Ayo Abodunde, who is an uncle to the husband, said he was very happy but also worried about the couple given the previous intervention of third parties in their issues.
 
“I counselled Bunmi to be very patient and understanding when dealing with women and especially a wife. I told him that he has to avoid any situation that will lead to arguments and fights, especially because of their children and the domestic law in the new country.”
 
He added that the tension is now very high in the two towns over the sad development. “I have now arranged for our family to go to Igogo Ekiti on Wednesday (today) to visit and engage the other family (late Taiwo’s) on the way forward.
 
 
A neighbour living near the unfortunate home of the couple in Newmarket described her routine observation: “I came home to see that the whole street was just covered in police and ambulances, but two days prior there were police. I knew it was something really bad with the amount of police here and the way they were not telling anyone anything. Normally they say something, but they were very hush-hush.”
 
Another added: “It’s just awful, everyone is really shocked. I used to see some young boys kicking a ball about in their garden.”

In a condolence note penned through his social media handle, the Kehinde Owoeye said; “I want to tell the entire member of Owoeyes’ family to stay calm (though painful) as justice will be served on the killer in due course; be rest assured. I want to thank UK Govt, Detectives Peter, Amy and the hired Private investigators, as well as the Nigeria Embassy in London for their professionalism. To the Onigogo of Igogo-Ekiti and sons and daughters of Igogo, with a lot of our friends especially in the United Kingdom, we say thank you for your efforts so far. To the people that came from far and near to console, we appreciate.

“To my mum, though it’s an irreplaceable loss, please take heart (though not easy), it’s only God that can console you divinely. To the entire Amuludun dynasty, please NO to derogatory post, calm down as we await his trial in the Court of the UK. Thanks for your understanding the children are currently being taken care of by the UK social services.”

Olunife, a Nigerian X user, has recounted a rather shocking story about a Nigerian man in the United Kingdom.

Olunife disclosed that the Nigerian man reportedly killed his wife who was also with him in the UK. According to her, the couple relocated to the UK this year.

She added that the incident happened after the mother of three filed a restraining order against her husband.

Bank customers have said that they are unable to withdraw their deposits for transaction in yuletide season in Ondo State, as the banks have slashed their withdrawal limits across the state.[/b]p

A LEADERSHIP Weekend investigation revealed that [b]many customers could not withdraw the amount they needed over the counter due to a lack of adequate cash on the part of the banks.

When LEADERSHIP Weekend visited some banks in Akure, the state capital on Friday, customers who spoke with our correspondent disclosed that bank officials have adopted the system of reducing their withdrawals based on the amount they intended to withdraw.

According to the customers, the bank officials asked them to use alternative channels to carry out their outstanding transactions.

It was also observed that many banks were operating without adequate cash to meet their numerous customers’ needs.

In some banks in Akure, customers only have access to cash ranging from N5,000 to the maximum of N20,000 respectively.

Also, there were long queues of customers at the Automated Teller Machines points(ATMs) in some banks in the state capital.

The development, it was learnt, affected several operators of Point-of-sale businesses who could not withdraw enough cash from the banks and the ATMs to run their businesses properly.

Some of the customers observed that the problem had started since last week.

A customer, Mrs Toyin Alade, said ”I came to Access Bank and First Bank branches in Alagbaka to collect N200,000 but I could not do so.”

Access Bank officials said they could only give me N100,000. The first bank officers also claimed they could give me only N100,000. The two banks claimed there wasn’t enough cash and subsequently advised me to use alternative channels to do my remaining transactions. ”

One of the banks in Akure, the state capital, who spoke with LEADERSHIP Weekend on condition of anonymity, confirmed the shortage of cash, saying it was due to the cash supply from the CBN.

“According to him, “What we have resorted to doing is to encourage our customers to use alternative channels and give them the little we have on the ground. Currently, we are at the end of the year. The demand is huge and we have to balance it. The CBN hasn’t been giving us enough cash in recent times especially since the surge in demand started some weeks ago.

An operator, who identified herself as Oliwatoyin, said the dearth of cash from the banks affected her business.

“For the past few days now, I could not attend to a customer who wanted to withdraw over N25,000 at once. This was because I couldn’t receive much cash from my banks. I was forced to be rationing the little cash I had with me. “

It is not known what caused the fight between the officers. But, the issue was later resolved by another police officer before they left the scene.

A 70-year-old Ugandan woman, Safina Namukwaya has become the oldest African to give birth through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment as she delivered a set of twins after 40 years of waiting.

The woman delivered the twins on Wednesday at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in the Ugandan capital of Kampala.

The hospital shared the news of the delivery via its Facebook page on Wednesday, stating, “70-year-old, Safina Namukwaya, speaking just before the delivery of her beautiful babies. Yes, she delivered twins, a boy and a girl. A historic achievement indeed.


“As we honour this courageous mother and anticipate the healthy growth of her twins, we invite you to celebrate with us. This story isn’t just about medical success; it’s about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”

During IVF, an egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm under controlled laboratory conditions.

Thereafter, the fertilised egg, referred to as an embryo, is then returned to the woman’s womb to grow and develop.

Namukwaya told a privately owned NTV channel that it was her second delivery in three years after she gave birth to a girl in 2020.

The 70-year-old shared that she had experienced multiple difficulties during the pregnancy, including desertion by the children’s father.

She lamented, “Men don’t like to be told that you are carrying more than one child. Ever since I was admitted here, my man has never shown up.”

Namukwaya said she did not know how she would manage to raise the children, but was happy to have them after years of enduring stigma and ridicule for being childless, the report stated.

“One time, a very young boy heckled me saying I had been cursed by my mother to die without a child,” she recalled.

Namukwaya had revealed after the birth of her first child that she had been judged for not giving birth after 40 years of trying.

‘Many people judged and abused me for being barren but, I decided to leave everything to the Almighty God who has finally answered my prayers,’ she said shortly after the birth of her first daughter in 2020.

While Ms Namukway’s case is a rare one, it’s not the first time a woman has given birth at a more advanced age.

In 2019, Erramatti Mangayamma, from India, gave birth to twins through IVF at the age of 74 – becoming the world’s oldest mother.

Mangayamma, of Andhra Pradesh state, gave birth to two healthy baby girls with her husband of 57 years, Sitarama Rajarao at her side.

Pastor Jeremiah Adegoke has been sued by the Ekiti State Government.
 
The Directorate of Citizens Rights (DCR) from the Ministry of Justice in Ekiti State filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ekiti-born Chef Damilola Adeparusi, popularly known as Chef Dammy against Pastor Jeremiah Adegoke and the Ekiti State Police Command.
 
She accused them of alleged infringement of the her rights, according to TheNation.
 
The DCR is also seeking compensation of N10 million for damages on behalf of the student chef.
 
Recall that chef Dammy rose to fame after her unsuccessful cook-a-thon challenge to break the Guinness World Record in June.
 
The DCR also asked the court that a restraining order be enforced to prevent Adegoke and the police from re-arresting Chef Dammy.
 
The lawsuit was filed barely a week after Chef Dammy was reportedly arrested on the order of Adegoke, who was her pastor.
 
Adegoke is the head pastor of Spirit Word Global Mission, an Ekiti-based church that reportedly sponsored Chef Dammy’s record-making cook-a-thon.
 
The controversy between Chef Dammy and her pastor started in October, after the 24-year-old raised alarm over alleged relentless threats and intimidation from individuals whom she tagged “people of God” and her pastor.
 
The 300-level Mass Communication student of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) said that she had been threatened and bullied, making her living in constant fear for her life.
 
The exact bone of contention between the chef and her once-supportive pastor is still vague and their dispute appears to have been a fallout of the failed cook-a-thon.
 
Following Chef Dammy’s public outcry, Adegoke, in a letter signed by his lawyers, Bisayo Sule & Co legal practitioners, dated 23 October 2023, demanded a retraction of the alleged defamatory statement on social media, an apology on two widely read national dailies and payment of a sum of N22 million for damages.
 
He gave Chef Dammy seven days to comply with the demands or risk being sued.
 
However, in the suit filed by DCR on November 24, Chef Dammy was named as the applicant, Adegoke and Ajewole Samuel, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, and the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 17 Akure, were named respondents.
 
The lawsuit seeks a declaration that the continued harassment, molestation, threat of arrest, and intimidation by the pastor, and the Nigerian police, infringes on the applicant’s fundamental human rights.

The lifeless body of a 44-year-old man was found in Agba Dam, in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, after he drowned.

Spokesperson of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, who disclosed this in a statement said the incident occurred at 10:50 hours on Monday, November 27, 2023.
 
According to Adekunle, the service responded to a distress call from one Mr. Onikepe Bolaji reporting a body found in the dam.

“The firemen swiftly embarked on a rescue operation, inflating their boat upon arrival. They successfully recovered the body of a 44-year-old man who had drowned,” the statement read.
     
"The rescue team's expertise was evident and the recovered body was handed over to DSP Achimugu Samuel of the Nigeria Police.
     
"Present at the scene were the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Hon. Usman Lade and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources.
     
“The Honourable Commissioner commended the rescue team for their exemplary performance in handling the situation.”

Meanwhile, the Director, of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, expressed sadness over the incident and urged the general public to be more vigilant in their neighbourhoods to prevent similar occurrences.

Enitan ended the hand wash-a-thon initially fixed for 50 hours at 12:05 AM on Monday, November 27, 2023, which made her surpass the set duration.

At the end of the task, Enitan said: “I felt I should give up several times, especially when I was pressed, I was like can I go through this thing? That my mum and my friends are in this crowd I feel very fulfilled to complete this task right in front of her.”

Confirming the development to The Nation on Monday, the Student Union President of OAU, Abbas Akinremi said: “She ended the wash-a-thon in the early hours of Monday and we took her to the university clinic.”


A congratulatory message from the Faculty of Arts Students Association (FASA), OAU, urged students to come out en mass to celebrate her.

The message signed by the faculty, PresidentHammed Oluwashina, Public Relations Officer, Tunji- Ajayi and General Secretary, Jesulayomi Aquila, reads, “The Executives of the Association extend their warmest felicitations and commendations to Subair Enitan, who has achieved her desired target of 50 hours in her official attempt at the 50-hour WASH-A-TON.

“This accomplishment could pave the way for her to break the record for the longest individual handwashing session.

“We express gratitude to all FASAITES who have shown support and encouragement for her and earnestly request more support for her at this final stage. Subair Enitan, from the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, is one of us, and we cannot be more proud of her.

“As we anticipate the validation of her record, let’s come out in mass and celebrate with her. To celebrate alone is to enjoy, but to celebrate with others is to savor the true essence of joy.”

Earlier, the regional sales manager of Aspira Nigeria Limited, Joseph Adeyemi said the company decided to support the vision of young enterprising Nigerians whose intent is to break new ground.
