TV/Movies / Dstv, Gotv Hike Subscription Prices For Third Time In 2023 by Teepresh2: 4:57pm On Nov 02, 2023
DStv, GOtv Hike Subscription Prices For Third Time In 2023 Amid Economic Hardship

Pay TV firm MultiChoice Nigeria has hiked prices of DStv and GOtv for the third time in 2023, according to a report by NaijaNews.

The platform said sources at MultiChoice who pleaded anonymity confirmed the development.

According to the report, the new bouquet price will take effect from November 6.

The latest increase is which is another 17% increase will have GOtv subscriber pay N12,500 for the Supa+ package the highest subscription price as against the N10,500 which it initially cost. DStv subscribers will also be made to pay N29,500 as against the N24,500 it earlier charged premium subscribers.

The latest increase comes as Nigerians continue to battle the ripple effect of fuel subsidy removal and and the weakening value of the country’s currency at the FX market.

President Bola Tinubu had on assumption of office immediately removed subsidy on fuel, the development caused a significant hike in the pump price of fuel from about N189 per liter to over N600 which it currently sells.

The rise in the pump price of fuel had adversely affected transporting which had in turn affected the prices of commodities across the nation with Nigerians struggling to afford basic commodities. The prices of commodities hiked further after the President Bola Tinubu led government floated the country’s currency causing it to weaken further at the FX market.

This is not the first time that MultiChoice will be increasing the bouquet prices of DStv and GOtv, recall that the in May, the pay TV firm increased their subscription package by 17 percent after it earlier increased the bouquet prices earlier in the year.

Business / CBN Extends Deadline For Old Naira Notes Beyond December 31 by Teepresh2: 10:33am On Nov 02, 2023
JUST IN: CBN extends deadline for old naira notes beyond December 31

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has clarified that the old 200, 500, and 1000 naira notes would continue to be legal tender even after December 31, 2023.

Recall that in October 2022, Godwin Emefiele, former CBN governor had unveiled plans to redesign the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, urging citizens to deposit their old notes before January 31, 2023, as they would lose their status as legal tender beyond that date.

However, this directive led to a cash shortage in February, causing hardships for citizens and prompting protests and bank attacks in some parts of the country.

As the hardship lingered, three northern states — Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara — in a motion ex-parte filed by, AbdulHakeem Mustapha (SAN), prayed the apex court to halt the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) naira redesign policy.

A seven-man panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro, in a unanimous ruling, granted an interim injunction restraining the FG, CBN, commercial banks etc from implementing the February 10, deadline for the old 200, 500 and 1000 Naira notes to stop being a legal tender.

The Supreme Court in another judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim on March 3, 2023, ordered that old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes remain in circulation till December 31, 2023.

The apex court also nullified the Federal Government’s naira redesign policy, declaring it as an affront to the 1999 Constitution.

Citing Section 23(2)1 of the constitution, the court held that the dispute between the Federal Government and states must involve law or facts.

Following, the judgement in March, the CBN announced that these specific banknotes would no longer be in circulation after the end of this year.

There are concerns that it could happen again with only 2 months remaining until the Supreme Court’s December deadline.

However, in response to concerns about the scarcity of these banknotes and the approaching year-end deadline, a senior official from the CBN reassured the public that both old and new banknotes would still be considered legal tender.

“They are all legal tender. Nigerians should continue to spend them. There is no need to worry about the December 31 deadline,” the official told Business Day.

Furthermore, the CBN official emphasised that the phasing out of the old notes would be a gradual process to avoid causing additional hardships for the people.

“We won’t want Nigerians to undergo similar pain as they experienced earlier this year. The phasing out of the old notes will be gradual. It won’t be rushed,” the official assured.

Foreign Affairs / US Announces New Nuclear Bomb 24 Times More Powerful Than One Dropped On Japan by Teepresh2: 9:39am On Oct 31, 2023
US Announces New Nuclear Bomb 24 Times More Powerful Than One Dropped On Japan

The United States has announced it is planning to build a powerful new nuclear bomb that will be 24 times more powerful than one of the bombs dropped on Japan during World War II.

The Department of Defense said it is seeking congressional approval and funding to pursue a modern variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb, which will be designated the B61-13, according to a DoD press release.

"Today's announcement is reflective of a changing security environment and growing threats from potential adversaries," Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb said in the release. "The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities we need to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies."

A fact sheet included with the release said the B61-13 will have a similar yield to the B61-7, which according to a Defense News report, has a maximum yield of 360 kilotons. The load is 24 times larger than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II, which was about a 15 kiloton bomb. The B61-13 would also be about 14 times larger than the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, which was 25 kilotons.

According to the fact sheet, the powerful new bomb will also "will include the modern safety, security, and accuracy features of the B61-12."

The announcement comes amid rising tensions around the globe, with the U.S. conducting a high-explosive experiment at a nuclear test site in Nevada earlier this month. Corey Hinderstein, the deputy administrator for defense nuclear nonproliferation at the National Nuclear Security Administration, said the test was meant to advance "our efforts to develop new technology in support of U.S. nuclear nonproliferation goals."

"They will help reduce global nuclear threats by improving the detection of underground nuclear explosive tests," Hinderstein said of the experiments.

The new bomb will be deliverable by modern aircraft, the release notes, and will be designed to give the president options to strike hard and large-area military targets.

If approved, the bomb would replace some of the current B61-7s currently in the U.S. nuclear stockpile instead of increasing the size of U.S. nuclear stocks, the release noted.

"The B61-13 represents a reasonable step to manage the challenges of a highly dynamic security environment," Plumb said. "While it provides us with additional flexibility, production of the B61-13 will not increase the overall number of weapons in our nuclear stockpile."

NYSC / NYSC Members Beg Tinubu’s Goverment To Increase Their Allowance Above N33000 by Teepresh2: 9:02pm On Oct 29, 2023
We’re suffering – NYSC members beg Tinubu’s goverment to increase their allowance above N33000

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have asked the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to increase their allowance, saying they are facing serious hardship.

The corpers whose appeals come almost a month after the national minimum wage was increased by N25,000 expressed dissatisfaction and concerns over their exclusion from the award.

Recall the adjustment in workers’ salaries was due to the National Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC)protest against the hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.

However, the Federal Government is yet to implement an increase in the NYSC members’ N33,000 monthly allowance.

A serving corps member in Ogun State, who identified himself as Melekwe Anthony, said: “While the government should be commended for paying Corpers regularly and increasing the monthly allowance from N19,500 to 33,000 naira, I think that our government should do more given current hardship in the country as most of us are starving. to ensure serving our country.

“With the cost of foodstuff in the market, transportation, and other necessary expenses right now, excluding personal savings, Corpers should certainly be earning more than they do. We know how important it is to serve our country but posting graduates far away from home to serve on empty stomachs is certainly not encouraging.”

In the same vein another serving corps member in Rivers State, Aniete Essien, said: “The Federal Government is not treating us well. After the increment of minimum wage to N65,000, corpers all over Nigeria were very happy and we were expecting it to be reflected in our monthly allowance but now the Federal Government has failed us and we are not happy. My message to the Federal Government from my point of view and with what we are facing in the country, I’m pleading that they should look into this because corps members are suffering and it’s majorly due to the inflation in the country”

Gabriel, who is also a serving corps member in Rivers State said: “It was good news when President Bola Tinubu announced the increment of minimum wage, corpers were expecting that our allowance would be increased also.

“My message to the Federal Government is that they should say something and they should try to do what they say, that will help increase our trust in them”.

Another serving corps member in Lagos state (name withheld) pleaded with the Federal Government to “consider youth corpers. The Nigerian economy is becoming something else, the cost of foodstuff, transportation, and other amenities are on the high side. The N33,000 allowance is not sufficient to cover our expenses.”

On his part, Nnanna a corps member who has completed six months of his service year in Rivers State, said: “I’m very sad indeed, based on what I’m seeing, they are still paying N33,000 instead of increasing our allowance. Corpers here are going to their PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) almost every day, we are spending money on food and the government is not taking adequate care of us. The N33,000 allowance is not enough to provide our daily bread and it’s not encouraging at all. The Federal Government should help us increase our allowance. Some of us pay transportation fares to go to our PPAs and if you calculate it for a month it’s very close to the entire N33,000 allowance we are getting.”

Amos a serving corps member in Anambra State expressed his dissatisfaction by saying: “The N33,000 allowance is not sufficient, especially with the recent inflation. To fill a 6kg gas cylinder is N6000, cost of transportation, cost of foodstuffs everything is costly now, If the NYSC is that hard to maintain, then they should scrap it”

Another concerned corper, Daniel said: “I think it’s very bad due to the situation we find ourselves in this country, the inflation has gone up and to be precise especially those of us in Rivers State, with the rate cost of things, have gone up, we are suffering. We are part of Federal Government workers. Since the minimum wage increment has been approved, I don’t see any reason other Federal Government workers will benefit from the increment and corpers should not, it’s very bad. There’s nothing we can do with the N33, O00 anymore, if you take the 33k into the market today, you can only get a few things and they know the situation that we are in. Please, the Federal Government should do the needful.”

Another serving corper in Rivers State, said: “I think maybe it’s negligence, they just forgot about corps members or something because the N33,000 allowance is not enough to sustain a corper for a month. it’s terrible, and the dollar keeps rising, prices of things keep rising. The Federal Government should do something about it. Frankly, it’s ridiculous.”

However, Mercy, another serving corper said reducing the cost of living will be more effective. “The solution is not increasing the allowance of corpers but rather to reduce the cost of living,” she said.
