that i don't like yorubas doesn't make me a tribalist, does it? everbody have the right to like or detest people...atleas i admitted not liking them...i don't pretend...i am no hypochrist...anyway yorubas in nairaland gave me the reason to detest yorubas...including that your brother i quoted earlier.

You don't like Yorubas.

Like all Yorubas, right? That's pretty messed up. You deciding to hate all of us, pretty messed up.

Every discipline I'd say has it's intricacies. It would be rather shallow to say Pharmacy is tougher than Medicine or vice-versa.

I have someone close who studies Pharmacy.

The kind of things she complains about are largely Lab Reports(you can easily have 3 reports to submit at a given time), Dispensing Lab(and the ease of scoring a zero, it's even regarded a norm), Pharmacognosy and their many leaves and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (the ease of failing a whole question because you got the preceding ones wrong).

Even carrying that heavy COdex is definitely something. People flopping anyhow and having to go back one year.

I for one I'm not a fan of excessive chemistry(chemistry that has reduced to just drawing awkward lines and imagining where carbon atoms are undecided). In Pharmacy, their world revolves around chemistry, not my thing.

On the flip side, in medical school you attend dissection sessions where formaldehyde and it's attendant pungent odor leaves your eyes watery and labcoat smelly. Some school's insist on students taking Tetanus injections at regular intervals as a precautionary measure should one cut himself.

Reading Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry for two years(it's shorter period though) and you're required to go over everything again because you're about writing an exam that would take you forward or contribute to the misery of medical school should one fail. You've probably heard about people losing their minds in Medical school, ironic right?

The lecturers that would come to class with outrageous amounts of slides and sometimes yab people.

Going on ward rounds with a consultant during a certain rotation and the consultant decides to chew you because you forgot something about the pathology of the condition before you, this is usually done openly among colleagues and the patient. Many ladies just burst into tears; normal thing.

The extremely late nights and very early mornings.

Steeple-chase tests that require you staring at maybe a severed arm with the cubital fossa pinned and you're asked to name the structures that make up the roof, floor and boundaries under 1 minute/45 seconds.

Histology practicals that leave you confused even the more because what you're seeing under the microscope has no semblance to what you saw in the textbook.

The grading system which is usually a negative one for a question you attempted and got wrong as opposed to leaving the question unanswered and scoring zero.

In the light of all these, every course has their not so cool aspects, I'm sure even students of Glass Technology or Home Economics would definitely tell you their courses are also tedious.

The patient should be the center in health care not the cases we hear of Doctors (Med/Dent) having issues with MLS guys or Physiotherapy people feeling the doctors are usurping their duties.

I hope you get me.

wink wink

Do you take beer?? One Turbo King for you bruh.

All your talk doesn't change the fact that you are in the Dental register and not the Medical register. It also doesn't mean that your license doesn't state medical Practitioner and you are trying to force on people what they will never agree to. NHS is the largest employer of Medical Labour and have said Dentist by their training are Doctors must not deceive the public that they are Medical Doctors.

Dentistry is an amiable field with its different specialties, with OMS bring them closer to Medicine. And Medicine is a different course entirely with its different specialties. This is the information the public need, and this will foster patient safety. ENT, Ophthalmology etc that you mentioned are all specialties under medicine and Surgery. Specificalists have left Nigeria to different countries, and because of the rigors of going into their index specialty decide to take Medical licensing exams and enter into less competitive specialties, because their primary qualification permits them to do so.

If a Medical Doctor decides to do paediatric Dentistry, he has to return to get a primary qualification in Dentistry, and with all the so called "Medicine and Surgery" you are emphasizing, if a Dentist decides he wants to be a Cardiologist, He has to return back to Medical school to get MBBS as his primary qualification. This shows that the Medicine or Surgery you did is not enough to move you up the specialty ladder. You ignore OnG and Paediatrics altogether which is another gruelling 16-18months of didactic medical Education mixed with bedside tutelage so as to push ur highly distorted, skewed and untaught propaganda.

When you go outside. UK for example, you can't even write Plab which qualifies you to be in their Medical register, except you go back to MBBS. You instead write a different exams, called ORE (I can educate you for free on this), and are regulated by a different body, GDC, and placed on a Dental register. The same body have warned Dental Doctors that they shouldn't deceive the public that they are Medical Doctors, but this is exactly what this thread seems to push, lies.

I have added links to most of my other write ups, so the simple and uninformed don't fall into the banana pill that you have set ahead of them.

I clearly stated that many Dentist, more than 80% who took pre degree with us wanted to study Medicine and Surgery, and got thrown into Dentistry, and they then try to validate their being in Dentistry and give their self a very false and distorted idea that they are studying an upgraded Medicine and Surgeries and are specialists. Another 10% are afraid of the rigors of getting into Medicine, and thus rather pick a less demanding course, they behave like the former, I arguably think you stand in this category. The remaining, chose it out of free and Enjoy the Course, accept it as a different, closely related but Unique field from Medicine and Surgery.

I have life mentors who are great Dentists and have crafted me into becoming, and I wonder if they'll ever pass their humility, work ethic, dedication to their profession to a younger degeneration still battling with professional identity.

Addendum: The distinction in Medicine must be clearly stated that it's a Distinction in Medicine among their Dental Counterparts. When BGS in Medicine is given, its given to MBBS. Then Dentistry induction starts afterwards. At the End of the Induction two people give a speech. The best in Medicine and surgery (Medical Doctor), and the best in Dentistry (Dentist/Dental Surgeon). There is no overall best in Medicine and Dentistry, because they are two different courses. I say this to educate the young generation who may be hoodwinked to believing that Medicine and Dentistry are comparable alternatives, they are not. If you want to attend to addison's disease, graves disease, MIs, arrhythmias, syncope, etc go for MBBS, and if you are obsessed about Dentitions, and pulling off bad tooths, and relieving people of tooth pain, or taking care of clefts and oral abnormalities, go for Dentistry, but don't let a low esteemed, confused bunch deceive you into going the wrong path.

Peace

The point of all these epistles is just to prove one point, Medicine is different and distinct from Dentistry lol. Funny thing is, no one on this thread is claiming they are alternatives. You just kept whirling around in circles to prove a moot point grin

I don't get the ishh about Ababio self, I use it only for reference. Understanding Chemistry and Lamlad Chemistry were my mains. At the end, it's all about what works for you. Different strokes for different folks.

Let's say about N140,000 each for second year and third year(I have factored in Misc. such as faculty dues, bank charges etc under school fees)

For 400L to 600L let's say about N165,000{Misc. such as Faculty dues, bank charges etc is factored in under school fees) for each of those years.

*Mind you textbooks, Scrubs, Stethoscope, Dental tools, Pocket money, food stuff hasn't been factored in.

*My analysis might not be spot on correct. Nevertheless, I'm sure it hovers around the actual figures.

Omo, That's almost 250K

I agree with the fact that the University of Ibadan's admission process is usually hitch free when you merit your desired course. However, things have changed at her college of Medicine as the following now obtain:

Hostel Accommodation: Hitherto, hostel accommodation at UI main campus used to go for N14,000 now it's N30,000 in the Halls of Residence on the main campus and N40,000 at ABH{Alexander Brown Hall}, where Medical students, Physiotherapists-in-training, Dental surgery students and Medical Lab students undergo the clinical phase of their training. However some pay as much as N60,000 when they cannot secure a bedspace legally and have to buy from a third party.

Technology fee: This was a recent development which we all Uites resumed to this session. We all had to pay a technology fee of N6,500. What the money would be used for was not stated; no one knows.

Professional training levy: I had to save the best for the last grin. This began about 2 years ago. Students of Medicine and Dentistry pay N70,000 between 200L and 300L{Pre-clinicals}. From 400L to 600L{Clinicals}, they pay N85,000.

Medical Laboratory Science, Physiotherapy and Nursing students pay N70,000 at 200L and N85,000 from 300L to 500L.

Students of Physiology and Biochemistry{Laboratory fees} pay N20,000 from 200L to 400L

Environmental Health Science and Human Nutrition and Dietetics students pay N50,000 in 200L and N70,000 from 300L to 400L.

Ps:
*Environmental Health Science is an incipient course at the UI. The very first set of students should be resuming next year.

*School fees are different and distinct from the above stated fees.

*Without the payment of the professional training fee, technology fee and school fee, Medicine and Dentistry students would be disallowed from sitting for their professional examinations.

*If a students repeats, then all payments have to be remade where necessary.

*If anything at all, these fees are expected to climb as the years go by.

*If you are looking to study any course at the COM_UI, in addition to having the requirements, please have money.

AyemiTemibami

Lol, how much is now school fee for Dental Surgery Students?? grin

Oga Nltaliban, thanks for this eye opener. Are you sure that one can now cross from one professional course to another professional course in UI? If this is true, don't you think it will be difficult to cross even after meeting the requirements considering the fact that other students will also have this in mind? I will like you to clear the ground on that crossing very well. How feasible it is, what requirements for it and other things on it.

Dude, been a while.

I hope you got in this time?
