PoliticsMinimum Wage: Why Can't Nigeria Pay Per Hour? by tellsblinks(op): 5:31pm On Jul 18, 2024
The federal government's recent approval of 70,000 naira as the new minimum wage has sparked a lot of discussion. While it's a step in the right direction, I can't help but wonder - why are we still stuck on a monthly wage system?

In today's fast-paced, gig economy world, paying per hour makes more sense. It's more flexible, more efficient, and more fair. Why should someone who works 20 hours a week earn the same as someone who works 40 hours?

Imagine a situation where you are broke, and decide to work more. Is your extra work for fancy?

Paying per hour would also encourage productivity and hard work. Imagine knowing that every extra hour you put in means extra money in your pocket!

So, I ask again "why can't nigeria pay per hour?"

PoliticsFG Offers Free CNG Kits To Transport Unions, Targets 50% Fare Cut by tellsblinks(op): 8:53pm On Jul 11, 2024
FG offers free CNG kits to transport unions, targets 50% fare cut

IN a bid to speed up the use of Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, by commercial transporters, the Federal Government disclosed that members of the transport union would be provided with free conversion kits and free installation fee.

The government said all transport owners belonging to the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, National Union of Road Transport Owners, NATO and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RETEAN, would benefit from the scheme through their unions.

Speaking at the signing of an agreement with five CNG kit conversion companies in Abuja, the Programme Director, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, PCNI, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi said the government expects the cost of transportation to drop by about 50 percent over time.

The firms are Portland Gas, NIPCO, ABG Oil and Gas, Fix it 45, and NITT.

The ceremony also included the NURTW and e-hailing company, Bolt. The government said transport companies and e-hailing companies would get the conversion kits at 50 percent discount. The cost of each kit costs between N1.2 to N1.5 million.

Oluwagbemi explained that the government has identified 123 kit conversion centres across the country, saying the Conversion Incentive programme would be financed from the palliative fund set up by President Bola Tinubu.

He said: “The Conversion Incentive Programme is tackling the barrier to Nigerian commercial transport entities, operators, to convert from PMS to gas. Most of them have said that the cost of conversion is expensive. And so what we are doing here today is basically to respond to that concern. What is the government doing about it? First and foremost, for commercial operators that are unionized, I talk about the members of RETEAN, NATO, NURTW, through their unions, they can benefit from almost 100 percent discount. That is, they will get the kit for free, and installation will also be done for them for free.

“And this is going to be done through these certified conversion workshops that we are beginning to identify. We’ve identified about 123 of them. Five of them are here with us today that we’re going to be working with here in Abuja. As we expand across the country, we’ll be activating more of them at a time.

“The second are ride-share operators. So if you are a vehicle that is operating under Uber, Bolt, LagRide, Move, among the many different operators that we have in Nigeria today, you’ll be able to benefit also from this programme. You will be able to benefit from a 50 percent write-off on the equipment, and then you’ll get the installation for free.

“So that means the government will pay for these conversion workshops. To install the equipment, you’ll get a 50% discount. And because of the arrangement we have with these companies, you’ll also be able to also get to pay little by little, so you’re not paying any money upfront on day one”.

Oluwagbemi said the government has 20,000 conversion kits in stock and targets to convert about 300,000 vehicles annually.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mohammed Bawa, ABG Oil and Gas, Comrade Aliyu Isa Ore, Acting President, NURTW, and Zankyams Duniya of Bolt, thanked the Federal Government for the support, saying the programme would significantly reduce the cost of transportation.

Bawa noted that with the switch to CNG “transportation (cost) should come down by almost 50 percent in the very near future. We believe that not only will transportation costs come down but also the price of food stuffs will come down considerably because transport cost is a major factor in the rising price of food”.

I experienced this back in 2014, when I invested in the planting of 2 hectares of maize and cassava. After the first two days, with how dem pack my maize despite plenty fight, I 5olsthem not to bother coming back the third day, cos they just mo gree hear word. I had to let them dry, shell, and then sell. It cost me more, cos of harvesting, transportation (this one I used my office car at the time a Renualt Logan for it, so only fuel money for like 2p back and forth trips btw the farm and silo), storing in a silo, shelling,....but that was the only way it was gonna be able to break even. I never did agric after that, cos that was lite9 the only thing I ha e ever invested in,wey stress me, and on top I didn't make money. Other things wey I no need move one finger I dey make btw 50- 300% ROI back then importing and selling jewelry, shoes, clothes, car scanners (I was one of the first movers selling this, and made a lot of money).

You will likely need to sell that maize dry, if you will break even, talkless of making profit. With wet maize there is literally only one use, to be boiled/roasted and eaten, and those women will ha e 5o buy cheap so they can make profit, cos they will buy coal, wood, and do all the roasting/boiling...

Whereas with dry maize there are many uses and so more options, and with that more value.
Hello, can I send you a PM

FG reaches agreement with oil producers on supply of crude oil to local refineries

The federal government, through the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), has reached an agreement with producers to permit the sale of crude oil to domestic refiners at market prices.

This resolution ends a supply dispute that has strained relations with international oil companies.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) stated that it could not allow pricing issues to hinder domestic refining.

The NUPRC emphasized its commitment to preventing “crude supply profiteering,” while also ensuring that oil production remains profitable.

He said, “We will never allow price strangulation to disincentivise our domestic refining capacity optimisation”

He stated that the regulator would work to prevent “crude supply profiteering,” while also ensuring that oil production remains profitable.

To ensure transparency, the Chief Executive of the NUPRC Gbenga Komolafe requested monthly cargo price quotes on crude oil supply and delivery from both producers and refiners.

He emphasized that it is the regulator’s responsibility to balance upstream development with a sustainable domestic energy supply chain.

Backstory
Earlier in the year, the NUPRC directed local and international oil companies to prioritise the supply of crude oil to local refineries. The regulator further set a target of 483,000 barrels to local refineries with the Dangote refinery expected to receive 325,000 barrels daily.

Additional refineries expected to benefit from the crude oil supply include the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries, which are slated to receive 75,000 and 54,000 barrels of crude oil per day, respectively. Meanwhile, smaller refineries such as Waltersmith, OPAC, and Niger Delta Petroleum Refinery, among others, are set to receive 10,000 barrels per day or less.

Later in April, the NUPRC mandated all oil companies in Nigeria to supply crude oil to domestic refineries that are unable to source it locally. Only after meeting these domestic supply obligations are producers allowed to export crude oil. The Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) mandates that international oil companies must first meet local demand by supplying crude oil to domestic refineries before exporting any surplus.

However, last month, Devakumar Edwin, the Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), accused International Oil Companies (IOCs) in Nigeria of deliberately attempting to undermine the Dangote Oil Refinery and Petrochemicals.

Edwin asserted that the IOCs are intentionally obstructing the refinery’s efforts to purchase local crude by inflating premium prices above market rates. This forces the refinery to import crude from distant countries such as the United States, resulting in significantly higher costs.

Nigerians expected the 650,000 barrels Dangote refinery to significantly or end the country’s petrol import dependence in the era of post-subsidy removal.

PoliticsFood Importation Will Erode Gains Made In Rice, Maize, Wheat — Naija Farmers by tellsblinks(op): 10:53am On Jul 10, 2024
Food importation will erode gains made in rice, maize, wheat production in Nigeria – Farmers Association

The National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Arc. Kabir Ibrahim has stated that the duty-free importation for food items will lead to the erosion of gains made in local production of maize, rice and wheat.

He disclosed this in a chat with Nairametrics on Tuesday where he stated that the situation with food security today requires some form of trade liberalisation and imports but should not exceed the stipulated 150 days period.

However, he noted that rice importation would be very painful to Nigerians who have invested heavily in rice production and processing.

Furthermore, he called on governments to invest through the provision of subsidies on inputs such as machines, fertilizers and chemicals in order to have a sustainable food system in the country.

He stated, “The gains made in internal sufficiency will certainly be lost in some of the three competencies mentioned viz; rice, maize and wheat

Nigeria and Nigerians have made sizable investments in rice production and processing such that it is going to be very painful if this was done if absolutely necessary. As a matter of fact the wheat and maize issues if properly interrogated are easier to handle because some limited importation has always been there.”

“In order to really have a sustainable food system Nigeria should simply encourage and intensify production, processing, distribution and marketing of competences in which have proven comparative advantage by providing sustainable subsidy to inputs such as fertilizers, chemicals and mechanization.”

“We have no objection to controlled importation within a limited period to cushion the effect of hardship among our citizens but it should not be allowed beyond the agreed period of 5 months or 150 days as well as the agreed quarries of 500,000MT.”

Backstory
Yesterday, the federal government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security announced plans to begin duty-free importation of select food commodities such as rice, maize and wheat to increase food supply to Nigerians and replenish the strategic grain reserve of the government.

Furthermore, the federal government will engage stakeholders to establish a Guaranteed Minimum Price (GMP) for commodities. They will also ramp up production, particularly among smallholder farmers, in the 2024/2025 farming season and promote the production of fortified food commodities, among other initiatives.

Nigeria is facing one of the worst food crises in a generation, with food inflation surpassing 40% in May 2024. Data from the NBS shows that the prices of staple foods such as rice, maize, wheat, bread, and beans have more than doubled on average over the past year.

Projections from international development organizations, including the World Bank, FAO, and World Food Program (WFP), indicate that around 16% of Nigerians will experience severe hunger in 2024 due to the ongoing food crisis

Important to dimension things properly
Everything imported are affected by the dollar rate which has increased 100% in the last one yr.
Local food items if u notice are HYPERinflating and that's because there is scarcity induced by insecurity.

And yes, diesel, petrol costs and living costs also add to the prices of everything- local esp and imported..But the 2 reasons above are far more significant !
The issue of diesel and fuel can be solved if Federal Government painstakingly Stops exports of Crude Oil, and temporary Suspend export of Fuel, PMS etc

The target is to force the product of the nation to be available for her citizens first!!!!

And believe me if I say, the cost of petrol and diesel would crash to the nearest minimum, and the process can be diversified into setting up more Refineries and Processing Facilities

1. Reduce electricity tariff.
2. Reduce fuel pump price

If these can be implemented now, things will improve in the next 3 to 6 months.

Labour should direct their industrial action to this strategy rather than minimum wage which will be gulped by energy bills.
Truth be told, even if these things reduce, some people won't reduce price of there goods and services. Trust me if I tell you this

The best way forward is for government to enable individuals into providing these goods and services.

When foods is surplus, prices crashes
When it's scarce, prices soar.

Everybody should own a Farm, and President should provide Loans in terms of Mechanization, seedlings and Fertilizer

PhonesStarlink Mini Dish: Revolutionizing Internet Connectivity In Nigeria by tellsblinks(op): 7:50am On Jun 28, 2024
SpaceX is on the verge of launching the highly anticipated Starlink Mini dish.

This revolutionary device promises to transform internet availability, particularly in underserved areas.

It is set to provide satellite-based internet connectivity to people in remote locations where physical connections are impossible and mobile connections offer limited bandwidth.

The Starlink Mini is a game changer. With dimensions measuring 11.4 inches by 9.8 inches, it is significantly more compact and portable than the current 23.4-inch by 15.07-inch Starlink dish. The device is designed to fit comfortably in a backpack, providing users with unprecedented flexibility and convenience. This portability makes it an ideal companion for remote workers, travellers, and those living in isolated areas.

The integrated Wi-Fi router in the Starlink Mini supports Wi-Fi 6 (802.11b/g/n/ax) and operates over the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. It features 3×3 MIMO built-in antennas, enhancing the connectivity experience. The device has only two connectors: a DC barrel for the external power source and an RJ45 network connector, allowing users to connect up to 128 devices. Weighing only 2.4 pounds (or 3.4 pounds with the kickstand and DC cable), the Starlink Mini is lightweight and easy to set up.

Since TD Africa, the leading distributor of tech products in Africa and the major distributor of Starlink products in Nigeria introduced Starlink into the Nigerian market, the company has captured the public’s interest with its ubiquitous satellite service.

The latest Internet Service Provider (ISP) data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) showed that Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, has emerged as Nigeria’s third-largest ISP by subscriber number in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023

For Nigerians eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Starlink Mini, the wait is almost over. Immediately after Starlink launches the Mini, Konga, Nigeria’s leading e-commerce group and Starlink’s exclusive shop-in-shop retailer, will ensure it is available nationwide. The device will be offered on konga.com at the best prices. This partnership underscores Konga’s commitment to providing cutting-edge technology solutions at affordable prices.

Rest assured, the Mini delivers impressive performance. Based on a speed test screenshot shared by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the Starlink Mini offers a robust 100 Mbps download speed and a respectable 11.5 Mbps upload speed with a latency of 23 ms. These capabilities are more than enough to power multiple 4K video streams, video calls, seamless voice chats, and speedy file downloads. Users can expect a seamless and high-quality internet experience, regardless of location.

For users needing to extend coverage to a broader area, the Starlink Mini is compatible with Starlink mesh, allowing it to pair wirelessly with another Starlink router. There is also an Ethernet port for those who prefer a direct connection. This versatility ensures that the Starlink Mini can adapt to various user needs and environments.

One of the most attractive aspects of the Starlink Mini is its affordability. The device is likely to be sold at half the price of the standard dish, making it accessible to a broader audience. This pricing strategy is expected to significantly boost adoption rates, particularly in Nigeria, where cost has been a barrier to accessing high-speed internet.

The launch of the Starlink Mini signifies a significant step forward in democratizing internet access. Whether you reside in a remote location, crave internet on the go, or simply yearn for a more affordable and reliable internet solution, the Starlink Mini is here to bridge the gap. With TD Africa and Konga at the helm, a brighter and more connected future awaits Nigerians
