There are indications that the Lagos State Police Command may drop all charges against, Mr. Segun Fabunmi, the Divisional Police Officer of Pen-Cinema Police Station, who allegedly shot Abiodun Ademola to death on January 9, at Yaya Abatan in Ogba area of Lagos.

A reliable police source told Metro that as soon as the charges were dropped, the alleged killer police officer would be redeployed to another state.

Asked why police should do such a thing in view of the controversy surrounding Ademola’s killing, the source said the police would hide under the pretext that since nobody was willing to testify against the DPO, there was no justification to prosecute him.

He said, “The plan to kill this case is because Fabunmi is an officer. If he were to be a member of the rank and file, the police would have dismissed him by now through an orderly room trial and then prosecute him.

“The authorities are already planning to redeploy Fabunmi to another unit outside Lagos and people will soon forget about it.”

However, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of South-West zone, Mr. Azubuko Udah, had told one of our correspondents at a press conference that investigations were ongoing.

“The DPO is currently at the Homicide Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department and investigations are still ongoing. Based on the outcome of the investigations, we’ll know the next step to take,” Udah had said.

But our source said, “When witnesses refuse to come forward to give statements, the case will linger. After the tension dies down, the police officer will be transferred to another unit.

“In most cases, the transfer will be outside the state where the alleged crime was committed. There have been cases like this and the one at hand may just be another of such cases.”

Another source at the SCID, told our correspondents that investigations were discreet and were being handled by senior policemen.

“I can’t say much on the case because the investigation is being done in a clandestine manner. So, if the senior officers have a hidden agenda, I wouldn’t know,” he said.

However, the residents of Yaya Abatan, have said it was not true that nobody came forward to make statement in respect of the case.

Also, the slain man’s family said they would not relent until Fabunmi was brought to book.

Ademola’s father, Mr. Ishola Abe,warned that any plan by the police to scuttle the case would “bring the wrath of God on the police authorities.”

Abe said, “This is not something they can sweep under the carpet because God will not fold his arms and allow injustice to prevail. How can somebody kill my son and they are now planning to release him? We will let the whole world know their game plan and expose their atrocity.

“We toiled and raised a child only for a policeman to kill him. Why can’t the police be truthful for once and hold the DPO accountable? I will continue to cry out until justice is done.”

The Chairman, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, Mr. Oloruntoba Oke, also said he would not relent in his effort to ensure that the matter was not swept under the carpet.

Oke said, “This case is beyond the family of the victim or my local government now. This is a big case that the Inspector-General of Police must not sweep under the carpet.

“We will shout from East to West and tell people what the police have done if they scuttle the case. Justice must be done. I want to appeal to human rights activists to join us in ensuring that the IG does not take any step that will throw justice into the dustbin.”

A witness, Dele Mojeed, said the claim that nobody had gone forward to give evidence was a ploy to justify the plan by the police.

He said, “The police are lying. They came to Yaya Abatan and interrogated people and since then they have neither called us nor asked us to come to the SCID to make statements.

“When they came, a lot of people were there and they talked to us. Trying to redeploy that DPO will amount to injustice. Such an action will be against the spirit of justice. In fact, it will show that the police have little regard for the sanctity of human life.

“Who knows what Ademola would have become in life? He could have been a leader or somebody that will impact greatly on his country. But the DPO cut him down. The least the police could do is to ensure that justice is done.”

The youth leader of Yaya Abatan, Boladale Olajide, said he believes the police had plans to cover up the case.

Olajide said, “It is possible, we know how the police are. But it is not true that we did not respond when we were asked to make statements. They were here and we told them what happened.

“This is not a case that can be swept under the carpet because the state government is already taking it up. A lawyer from the government has been here. We will not keep quiet until justice is done.”

Fabunmi had shot into a crowd of youths at Yaya Abatan during the protests against fuel subsidy on January 9. Eyewitnesses said some of the youths were playing football on the road while some were reading newspapers at a nearby newsstand.

Fabunmi allegedly shot into the crowd and later shot Ademola in the crotch. Four others also sustained gunshot injuries.

This is just a piece of advice to everyone out there regarding general election 2011

You need to think deeply and make right decision by considering yourself, your family, friends and community

The question is where do i position myself in the next four years?

Think about what you are going to achieve when your desired candidate is swear in?

Imagine having good roads, stable electricity, equal rights, security and accountability

Please my fellow Nigerians think twice for better future not the present,

malaysia is a lovely place to see

i lived there for alomst 3 years as a student and relocate to Ireland

the good thing is that the country is good for holidays because it has a lot of tourist attractions but the bad thing is that if you are looking forward to work there is no job for foreigners and that is why a lot of nigerians engaged themselves doing 419
