PoliticsPDP Condemns Fgs Plan To Spend $1bn On Fight Against Insurgency by temitemi1(op): 5:20pm On Dec 15, 2017
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the plan by the Federal Government to spend $1billion from Nigeria’s excess crude account to tackle Boko Haram insurgency.

The Party condemned the plan on Friday, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

“Nigerians would recall that the APC-led Federal Government had claimed that it has since defeated the insurgents,” the PDP said.

“If it would take a billion dollar from a nation’s savings to kill what they long claimed dead, then we challenge APC government come clean and tell Nigerians the whole truth.

“The era of lies and propaganda is long gone and Nigerians now know the truth. The Federal Government must be held accountable and stopped from any move to fritter away our national savings.”

This comes less than 24 hours after National Executive Council approved the withdrawal of $1billion from the account by the Federal Government to tackle terrorism.

The approval, however, sparked a debate about the government’s insistence that it has technically defeated Boko Haram.

Beyond criticising the plan, the PDP said it has rubbished the integrity of the current administration and demanded that it apologise to Nigerians “for lying to them about the actual state of the fight against insurgency in Nigeria”.

“We therefore call on the National Assembly to interrogate this proposed disbursement and subject it to a thorough but rapid interrogation,” the party said.

It added, “By accepting the $1bn for fighting insurgency, the APC-led Federal Government has admitted that it lied when it announced that it has defeated the insurgents. They should therefore apologize to Nigerians for giving them a false sense of security, resulting in their vulnerability to attacks by terrorists.”

PoliticsPDP Convention : Why South-west Leaders Will Not Leave PDP- Ladoja by temitemi1(op): 10:45am On Dec 15, 2017
One of the contestants for the recently concluded national chairmanship election of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Rasheed Ladoja, has said South-west leaders will not leave the party despite losing out at the elections.

Mr. Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo state, said this at a meeting with the Governor Dickson Seriake-led reconciliation committee in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday. He confirmed that the South-west PDP leaders and members will remain in the party and work for its victory in 2019.

Governor Dickson, who had earlier promised to address grievances following the tense outcome of the convention earlier this week, reached out to another contestant, Tunde Adeniran.

Mr. Adeniran had advised the committee to reach out to other contestants who are also aggrieved ‘one way or the other.’

Before this, former president Goodluck Jonathan had led a reconciliation team to visit another aggrieved leader, Suleiman Abubakar, a former minister for national planning.

“In spite of the disagreements over Saturday’s elective National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leaders of the party in the South-west zone have restated their resolve to remain in the party,” Mr. Ladoja said.

“I am in politics to make Nigeria work. In 1999 they begged me to be the gubernatorial candidate of the Alliance For Democracy (AD) and I refused. I wanted a mainstream party. I have seen it all in PDP both the ascension and descent. It is the people that make the party not the other way round. If we come together, we will make the government that the people deserve. We are back to PDP and we will remain in PDP.”

Speaking on the controversy surrounding the national convention, Mr. Ladoja further said, “a week to the National Convention, we started pruning and on the eve, we had decided that Prof. Tunde Adeniran was our consensus candidate but the delegates decided otherwise. However, we will remain in the PDP, we are not going anywhere”.

“In the PDP we have the chance of winning across board. I will work assiduously to make sure all the aspirants in the South-west remain in the party and work for the party. This PDP will win. If you think you hate PDP, try the APC and you will see that APC is worse,” he said.

A national chairmanship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded national convention, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has reaffirmed his commitment and loyalty to the party.

Dokpesi said he had publicly undertaken not to dump the party, irrespective of the outcome of the convention, adding that he would team up with other well-meaning Nigerians to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019.

Dokpesi spoke in Abuja Wednesday, when he received members of the reconciliation committee of the party led by the Governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson.

The Chairman of DAAR Communications praised the leadership qualities of Governor Dickson and his efforts at reconciling party leaders and members.

He said the visit was timely and assured the committee of his willingness to continuously support the PDP.

He said “there are quite a number of things that were said before the convention. I believe that Nigerians will recall that I publicly said the convention was not a matter of life and death.

“That I did say that I was conscious of the fact that power comes only from God, and whoever emerges, I will give my unconditional support, to ensure that this party is able to fulfill its mission.

“I had defining moments where I would have on that Saturday made one or two statements that would have totally damaged the convention. But that is not my mission. My mission is to ensure that this present APC Government is removed from office.

“So whatever were the shortcomings, I had already agreed and i signed documents twice that I would unconditionally support whoever comes out of it.

“So here I am, I am willing, ready, prepared to allow the PDP have its breath. I pray for the PDP, I pray that we get it right. Be assured I will continue to give the PDP all the support that I need to give the party.”

Earlier in his address, the Bayelsa state governor and chairman of the Reconciliation team, Hon. Dickson, advised leaders and members of the PDP to rededicate themselves to the party to regain the presidency in 2019.

Though he noted that the past was critical to the future of the PDP, the Countryman Governor urged leaders and members to put the convention behind them and look into the future with hope because according to him, “PDP will rise again”!

Dickson commended Dokpesi for his maturity and love for the party, stressing that the latter demonstrated this by accepting the outcome of the convention as well as restraining his supporters from uttering unguarded statements.

The governor said, “now the convention has come and gone, the way it did. As party leaders, we know that even though it was a family contest, there was need to reach out to leaders who have played key roles in the party, and whose contributions moving forward would continue to be significant.

“We thought we should interact with you, to share ideas with you, to discuss some of the concerns and issues that have arisen after the convention.

“Primarily, it is not with a view to looking back as much as we would like all of us to focus on the future to see how we can get to our desired destination.

“The purpose of this engagement is not so much with a view to looking at the past than the future. We know the past is important to guide the future. But the purpose, the aim of this interaction is how we can move forward.”

'Rebuilding to Regain'

On behalf of members of the National Working Committee of the Peoples' Democratic Party, i dedicate this mandate to the Almighty God who it has pleased to make this convention successful and grant us this opportunity to serve our great party. We give all glory to God and we commit PDP into his hands.

I stand before you this day, humbled by the mandate you just given to my colleagues and I to lead this great party at this time in Nigeria's political history. We wholeheartedly accept it with extreme gratitude.

Eighteen years ago specifically February 14, 1999, this party made history with its first ever national convention in Jos, Plateau State and since then, has grown to become undisputedly, the largest political party on the African continent.

I recall that before that, precisely on the 19th of August, 1998, our founding fathers gathered here in Abuja to give birth to this party whose aims and objectives were patriotic, with lofty and visionary dreams.

By my understanding, the mandate you have given us today is clear and unambiguous. It is to return our party to power come 2019. As Herculean as this mandate seems, I know it's achievable. My campaign pillars for this election are 'To Rebuild, Reposition and Regain'. Let me assure you great members and leaders of our party, that by the grace of God and with all hands on deck, the brief tenancy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Aso Rock Villa expires on May 28, 2019. By this, we serve them a quit notice.

This has to be immediate, in order to save our beloved country from disintegration. We are all witnesses to how the unity of this country has been shaken to its very foundation under the watch of the rudderless and clueless APC. We therefore have a gigantic task of retrieving this country from APC's clear lack of direction and confusion starting with the Presidency.

In the words of the 34th President of the United States of America Dwight .D. Eisenhower, "If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power". Judging from this, it is crystal clear to all Nigerians, that APC is not a political party, but a body hurriedly assembled to seize power without a clear cut plan for governance.

Our party on the other hand, was founded on ideals which are totally in tandem with those of the founding fathers of this great country. Those founding fathers had in mind, a prosperous and lasting democracy as captured in the preamble of our constitution clearly stating their desire for a free and egalitarian society. Even in our perceived failure of 2015, we chose to to abide by our strong faith in democracy, willingly conceding power to opposition, thereby elevating the democratic status of Nigeria. We are the true democrats!

i can therefore say without an iota of doubt, that PDP's contributions to the growth and sustenance of democracy in this country in the last 18 years remain unequalled. The best way to celebrate the memories of these founding fathers, is to ensure that the ideals are continuously engaged. (At this juncture great PDP leaders and members here present, let us stand and observe a minute silent for our fallen heroes one of whom is our pioneer National Chairman and former Vice President of this country Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON who passed on recently)

With your mandate I assure you, that all necessary steps will be taken to avoid a repeat of our past mistakes. Indeed we have learnt our lessons and by this convention, we are now set to forge a new path for our great party and Nigeria. Under my watch, Internal democracy will be strictly adhered to with a deliberate policy to return 'real' power to the people. No more imposition, no more impunity. Every member of this party can from this moment, consider him or herself, an equal shareholder in our common destiny. I call on all Nigerians, of all creed and class, to embrace this new PDP and join in this quest for a new Nigeria. Particularly, I reach out to our old members who for one reason or the other have left the party, to please come back 'home'.

I cannot end this address without acknowledging my co-contestants especially for the chairmanship position. Truth be told, any one of you is eminently qualified to lead this party. I thank you for a worthy contest and being part of history as this marks the first time such a highly competitive contest to produce the leadership of a political party has been held in Nigeria. You have every cause to stand tall and I now extend my hand of fellowship to you all. Let 'US' Rebuild, Reposition & Regain.

In the same breath, let me thank the outgoing National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Markafi. We will forever remember your courageous leadership in our most trying times. History will no doubt, be kind to you. I must also thank the Convention Committee led by HE Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa for a job well done.

Finally in accepting this mandate, I am guided by the words of the 19th President of the United States of America, Rutherford Hayes who said in 1877 "he serves his party best, who serves his country best"

God bless you all

Long live the Peoples' Democratic Party of Nigeria

Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria

PDP-Power to the People

Power to the People-PDP.

I thank you for listening
