The Benue State chairman of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Comrade Abba Yaro says the killing of over 50 Benue indigenes by Fulani herdsmen is an attempt to spark a second civil war in Nigeria. In a statement released in Abuja, Yaro said the latest killing is a clear case of ethnic cleansing around the Benue valley which ought to be stopped immediately. He appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Fulani herdsmen to order as well as direct security agents to immediately get the killers. “This is above Party politics, it is human lives, how can you kill a pregnant woman and removed the unborn child yet slaughtered it? It is barbaric, unspeakable and generally unpalatable”. Yaro says the Anti Open Grazing Law in Benue is not targeted at any section of the people but for the general security of Benue State, a measure against cattle rustling and a solution to herders/farmers clash. “The implementation is ongoing and we are in support of our governor, we are not deterred, the Anti Open Grazing Law has come to stay. “Nigerians should not see the killings as a Benue problem but National crisis, the absence of peace in Benue is an absence of peace in Nigeria. “We must treat it as a national ethnic cleansing by the Fulanis and collectively pressurize Mr President to put an end to it. If Boko Haram can be defeated, IPOB stopped, Fulani killings can be stopped”, he observed. He further call on the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Buratai, the Interior Minister Lt Gen Danbazau, the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris to protect Benue community or “we rise in self-defense, which will amount to the second civil war.” Yaro emphasized that “if the Fulanis are not called to order by the relevant authorities to stop the ethnic cleansing like the lawless Fulanis are doing, Benue people shall take laws into their hands in self-defense”. http://wdn.com.ng/benue-apc-chairman-says-herdsmen-killings-invitation-war/

Former Governor of old Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita, has died. He passed away on Tuesday at 86. Circumstances surrounding his death were still sketchy at at press time, other than that he died in Abuja about 5p.m. A security aide at his Katsina GRA residence said family members were still being expected as at 8p.m on Tuesday for burial arrangements. Another source said the late governor is expected to be buried in Katsina on Wednesday. Kaita was governor of defunct Kaduna State from October to December 1983. The late governor had health challenges late last year, a development which made him to be admitted at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina, for some time. Meanwhile, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina State has expressed sadness over Kaita’s death. Governor Masari, in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Abdu Labaran Malumfashi, described the deceased as one of the most accommodating, generous and refined politicians the nation has produced. http://punchng.com/breaking-ex-gov-of-old-kaduna-state-lawal-kaita-is-dead/

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s new year message as a “boring litany of blame passing”. In a statement on Monday, the party said the president failed to address key issues affecting the nation. It said the address, which ended up making Nigerians “more depressed completely failed to respond to issues of corruption under the All Progressives Congress (APC) regime”. “We already knew the pattern and we advised against it this year. We knew their New Year message would heighten Nigerians’ despondency rather than providing us hope,” read the statement, issued by Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesman. “Instead of offering solutions or providing the indices for development, the presidency deployed over 2000 words passing the buck, begging the question, making empty claims and attempting to appropriate achievements of the PDP administration. “What could be more depressing than the fact that the president, who is also the minister of petroleum resources, did not give a clear-cut solution to the acute fuel crisis bedeviling his nation today? “The president’s speech neither addressed how to raise the fallen value of the naira nor how to rescue the labour market from the 8 million job losses and acute unemployment being suffered by Nigerians under the APC.” The party said Buhari’s message also had no assurances on the “worsening economic recession ravaging families” in the country nor on the “dilapidated infrastructure and attendant stress on the economy”. “Rather, what we heard was a boring litany of buck-passing, lame declarations and barefaced attempt to appropriate and claim credit for achievements and landmark projects initiated, articulated and implemented by the PDP administration, including, the railway, electricity and agricultural projects,” it added. The party challenged the APC to tell Nigerians the landmark project it has executed since coming to power. “Also the citizens are eager to know what work percentage that have been added to projects that were being executed by the PDP before the APC took power by propaganda and lies in 2015,” the statement read. “Nigerians have now seen that the APC has nothing to offer but has only succeeded in wrecking the nation and inflicting hardship on the people. “The option before Nigerians is to kick out the APC come 2019 and return the PDP, which is now repositioned to bring the nation back to the path of national unity and prosperity we all once enjoyed. “On this note, the PDP stands with the people to once again present a government that is serious, truthful and transparent, with an array of best hands harnessing and channeling our national resources for the good of all, as was the order before the unfortunate incursion of the APC.” https://www.thecable.ng/pdp-buharis-new-year-message-boring-litany-buck-passing-lame-declarations

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Herman Hembe, a sacked lawmaker, as the board chairman of the Michael Imoudo National Institute for Labour Studies (MINLS). The Benue lawmaker was one of the 209 chairmen appointed to fill board positions. Hembe was on June 23 sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria as led by Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). He was removed on the basis that he did not win the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to represent Vandeikya/Konshisha federal constituency at the national assembly. The five-man panel of judges led by Onnoghen had declared Dorathy Mato as the winner of the primary election of the APC. Hembe was ordered to return all salaries and benefits collected while in office within 90 days and pay N700,000 to Mato, while APC was also mandated to pay Mato and the court N300,000 each. In an affidavit seen by TheCable, Hembe pleaded with the apex court to set aside the order to repay all the salaries he received in office, on the grounds that he had spent all the monies and did not save. “I have tried very hard to raise a loan to enable me comply with the above order of the honourable court, but have not yet succeeded,” read the affidavit. HEMBE’S CONTROVERSIAL TRACK RECORD Hembe became one of the youngest federal lawmakers in Nigeria in 2007, when he was elected — at 31 — to represent his constituency at the green chamber. At the time, he was with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). By 2011, he was re-elected and later selected as the chairman of house committee on capital market and other financial institutions. As the chairman, he led a probe of the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), and in the course of the probe, Arunma Oteh, director-general of the commission, accused Hembe of soliciting a bribe of N40 million from SEC. He denied the allegation, saying it was Oteh who offered him N30 million bribe. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him to court but could not secure a conviction. By February 2016, now an APC lawmaker, Hembe was appointed to head a committee of the house to probe the $18 billion centenary city project. Anyim Pius Anyim, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) in charge of the project under the Goodluck Jonathan administration, also accused Hembe of asking for a bribe. Again, Hembe denied the allegations. In 2017, after 10 years as a federal lawmaker, Hembe was sacked by the supreme court, as a result of irregularities in the election that got him to claim the seat as the APC candidate. ‘PRODUCT OF IMPUNITY’ Hembe approached the supreme court for redress, asking the apex court to reverse itself on the payment of two-year salary. The CJN said: “If somebody has been in the House where he is not supposed to be and has reaped the benefits which it should not be, you mean we should close our eyes to this product of impunity? “No, we cannot go back to that because the imposter has no right to it. Whatever he collected should be refunded. This court is sending a message to everybody so that right from the primaries, the right thing should be done.” Hembe will, with immediate effect lead the MINILS board, under the ministry of labour and employment. Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) was established vide Act Cap 261 of the Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1990 as the only tripartite institution in the West African sub-region responsible for providing workers’ education. https://www.thecable.ng/buhari-picks-hembe-sacked-lawmaker-as-board-chair-institute-for-labour-studies

A man pretending to be a “Nigerian prince” to scam unsuspecting people has been arrested by the Slidell Police Department in Louisiana, US, WJLA has reported. The Slidell police say Michael Neu sends emails informing people that they are beneficiaries of large sums of money and that for them to claim their “inheritance”, they must first send him their bank account details. In what has been described as a “complicated case”, the police said Neu wires funds to his alleged co-conspirators in Nigeria. “Most people laugh at the thought of falling for such a fraud, but law enforcement officials report annual losses of millions of dollars to these schemes,” Slidell police said in a statement. Randy Fandal, Slidell police chief, warned against giving out personal information over the phone or through emails. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” Fandal said. “Never give out personal information over the phone, through email, cash checks for other individuals or wire large amounts of money to someone you don’t know.” Neu has been charged with 269 counts of wire fraud and money laundering. https://www.thecable.ng/nigerian-prince-scammer-arrested-hes-american
