Business / Naira Scarcity Hits Abuja As ATMs Fail To Dispense Cash by TemplarLandry: 7:25am On Dec 08, 2023
Some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, are beginning to experience paucity of the Naira as Nigerians approach Christmas.

No fewer than seven commercial banks in the AYA area of Abuja failed to dispense cash on Thursday.

Daily Post's correspondent who visited these ATMs on Thursday evening reports that he could not withdraw money, and it has been the case for about a week.

He however observed that Point of Sales, POS, operators lined up in their numbers in front of those banks to make brisk business.

One of the POS operators, who identified himself as Samuel, lamented that the ATMs have not been dispensing cash as expected.

He noted that cash was only available at certain hours of the day. “Since we entered December these ATMs have not been dispensing as much.”

“There is naira scarcity and most likely it may be because we are approaching December, but only CBN can explain this new scarcity,” he said.

This is coming amid the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, directive that both the old and the redesigned Naira notes remain legal tender in Nigeria.

The Supreme Court also in its judgment granted the prayers of the federal government to lift the December 31 extension deadline for the usage of N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

While responding to the judgement, the CBN had this to say: “To avoid doubt, the Supreme Court ordered that the old versions of N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes, alongside the redesigned versions, shall continue to be legal tender.

“Accordingly, in line with Section 20(5) of the CBN Act 2007, all banknotes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria will remain legal tender indefinitely.”

Foreign Affairs / Hamas Terrorists In Gaza Surrender En Masse by TemplarLandry: 9:53pm On Dec 07, 2023
Photos and videos of Hamas detainees, stripped of their clothes, have been circulating on social media..

Images and videos of Hamas terrorists who have surrendered and been arrested by the IDF have been circulating online, Israeli media reported on Thursday.

The reports came as the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah began in Israel.

A video revealing dozens of apprehended individuals stripped down to their undergarments as they sit in rows on the street exploded on platforms such as X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram.

Where were these pictures taken?
It is unclear where in Gaza these images were captured, but armed IDF soldiers are pictured next to the detainees as they wait, heads down, on rubble-strewn pavement in front of damaged buildings. https://twitter.com/i/status/1732765056184574015

“Thank you Hashem for letting the Jewish people start Hanukah with a smile thanks to this mass surrender of Hamas terrorists in Gaza,” wrote Jewish activist Hillel Fuld on X. “This should be the first of many! Thank you, IDF!”

Captioning a photo on X of the detainees kneeling in a row on a sidewalk  as their shoes litter the street in front of them, former director of speech writing at the Israel Mission to the United Nations and co-founder of Boundless Israel, Aviva Klompas described it as a “Mass surrender of Hamas terrorists.”

Another image published by the Israeli media outlet, Maariv shows the detainees crowded together in the back of an IDF military vehicle, again undressed, with their hands apparently secured behind their backs.

Science/Technology / The International Space Station Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary by TemplarLandry: 6:39pm On Dec 07, 2023
NASA recently commemorated a significant milestone in space exploration history: the 25th anniversary of the International Space Station (ISS). This celebration was marked with a special live event on December 6, where a space-to-Earth call connected the current crew aboard the ISS with NASA Associate Administrator Bob Cabana and Joel Montalbano, space station program manager.

The ISS turns 25 years old
Operational since 1998, the ISS stands as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration in space research and exploration. Hosting 273 astronauts from around the world and facilitating over 3,300 research projects, the station has become a cornerstone for advancements in space technology and scientific understanding.

The journey of the ISS began on December 6, 1998, with the attachment of its first two elements, Unity and Zarya, by the crew of the space shuttle Endeavour’s STS-88 mission, led by Bob Cabana. This marked the beginning of a global endeavor that has seen astronauts continuously live and work aboard the station for more than 23 years.

The ISS is a product of international cooperation, involving the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, NASA, and Roscosmos. This partnership has resulted in numerous technological and scientific achievements, with more than 3,300 research and educational investigations from 108 countries

Space station’s design and construction
The ISS’s journey began with its official approval by President Reagan and the US Congress in 1984. NASA Administrator James Beggs played a pivotal role in bringing together international partners, leading to a collaborative design and construction process between 1984 and 1993. The involvement of Canada, Japan, many European nations, and later Russia, was crucial in shaping the ISS.

The development of the ISS proceeded in two phases. Phase 1 involved the NASA-Mir program, where astronauts and cosmonauts conducted joint missions to the Russian Mir Orbital Station. This phase was instrumental in establishing collaborative processes and modifying Russian modules for international experiments.

Phase 2, commencing in 1998, saw the launch of the new ISS elements, marking a significant step in international space cooperation.

Educational and scientific goals
The ISS serves as a vital educational platform, inspiring youth worldwide to pursue STEM careers. The collective efforts of the participating space agencies emphasize the importance of applying ISS research in diverse fields such as human physiology, radiation, materials science, engineering, biology, fluid physics, and technology. These endeavors are crucial for future space missions and translating space research benefits back to Earth.

The ISS program is a technological triumph and a remarkable example of international cooperation. It exemplifies the harmonization of cultural and political differences to achieve a common goal in space exploration. The ISS has brought together international crews and a global network of launch, operations, training, engineering, and scientific research communities, showcasing the power of collaborative effort.

What’s next for the 25-year-old ISS?
As the ISS continues to age, with several components exceeding their original lifespan, ongoing analyses ensure its safety and viability. The station’s modular design allows for the replacement and augmentation of parts, ensuring its functionality as a laboratory and outpost in orbit.

Currently, the ISS is set to continue operations until at least 2030, marking an era of continued discovery and international collaboration in space.

In summary, the 25th anniversary of the ISS is a celebration of a space station and a tribute to the spirit of exploration and cooperation that defines our journey into the cosmos.

Religion / Happy Hanukkah 2023!! by TemplarLandry: 5:56pm On Dec 07, 2023
This year's Hanukkah starts from the evening (nightfall) of Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 – Friday, 15 Dec 2023. Hanukkah is a Jewish festival that reaffirms the ideals of Judaism and commemorates in particular the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by the lighting of candles on each day of the festival.

What to know about Hanukkah and how it’s celebrated around the world.

Hanukkah — also spelled Chanukah or other transliterations from Hebrew — is Judaism’s “festival of lights.” On eight consecutive nightfalls, Jews gather with family and friends to light one additional candle in the menorah — a multibranched candelabra.

In Hebrew, Hanukkah means “dedication,” and the holiday marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BC, after a small group of Jewish fighters liberated it from occupying foreign forces.

With the tiny supply of ritually pure oil that they found in the temple, they lit the menorah — and it stayed lit for eight days. The ritual of lighting a nightly candle, as well as the emphasis on cooking foods in oil such as potato pancakes called latkes, memorialize this miraculously long-lasting oil.

When is Hanukkah 2023?
The dates of the holiday are based on Hebrew month of Kislev, which usually coincides with November-December in the Gregorian calendar. Hanukkah will be celebrated from the evening of Thursday, 7 Dec 2023 – Friday, 15 Dec 2023.

Does Hanukkah observance vary?
Jews across the religious observance spectrum — from Reform to Conservative to Orthodox — focus on the same theme of bringing light into the darkness and emphasizing that even a small, against-the-odds effort can have a transforming effect.

For this reason, even though the Talmud reflects a dispute over the order of lighting, most start with one candle and increase the lighting by one more candle each night while reciting or chanting special blessings.

The candles are added from right to left, but lit from left to right on the menorah, thus always starting with the newest light. The special menorah used for Hanukkah has eight branches, with a ninth place for the candle called shamash from which all others are lit.

The tradition calls for candles with a real flame, though some also use electric ones in public displays, such as in hospitals, for safety reasons.

How is Hanukkah celebrated?
A menorah is lit in each household and traditionally is placed where it can be seen from the outside, such as a doorway or windowsill, to symbolize the spreading of God’s light to all nations.

The lighting of menorahs in city streets and parks has become more prominent in recent years in countries around the world, including in front of public landmarks.

In addition to menorah lightings, giving to charity and social works are also part of the celebration for many, reflecting the belief that the Jewish people are called by God to help make the world better for all.

Science/Technology / Google Launches AI Model 'Gemini', Billed To Be Better Than ChatGPT by TemplarLandry: 9:30pm On Dec 06, 2023
Google took its next leap in artificial intelligence Wednesday with the launch of project Gemini, an AI model trained to behave in human-like ways that’s likely to intensify the debate about the technology’s potential promise and perils.

The rollout will unfold in phases, with less sophisticated versions of Gemini called “Nano” and “Pro” being immediately incorporated into Google’s AI-powered chatbot Bard and its Pixel 8 Pro smartphone.

With Gemini providing a helping hand, Google promises Bard will become more intuitive and better at tasks that involve planning. On the Pixel 8 Pro, Gemini will be able to quickly summarize recordings made on the device and provide automatic replies on messaging services, starting with WhatsApp, according to Google.

Gemini’s biggest advances won’t come until early next year when its Ultra model will be used to launch “Bard Advanced,” a juiced-up version of the chatbot that initially will only be offered to a test audience.

The AI, at first, will only work in English throughout the world, although Google executives assured reporters during a briefing that the technology will have no problem eventually diversifying into other languages.

Based on a demonstration of Gemini for a group of reporters, Google’s “Bard Advanced” might be capable of unprecedented AI multitasking by simultaneously recognizing and understanding presentations involving text, photos and video.

Gemini will also eventually be infused into Google’s dominant search engine, although the timing of that transition hasn’t been spelled out yet.

“This is a significant milestone in the development of AI, and the start of a new era for us at Google,” declared Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, the AI division behind Gemini. Google prevailed over other bidders, including Facebook parent Meta, to acquire London-based DeepMind nearly a decade ago, and since melded it with its “Brain” division to focus on Gemini’s development.

The technology’s problem-solving skills are being touted by Google as being especially adept in math and physics, fueling hopes among AI optimists that it may lead to scientific breakthroughs that improve life for humans.

But an opposing side of the AI debate worries about the technology eventually eclipsing human intelligence, resulting in the loss of millions of jobs and perhaps even more destructive behavior, such as amplifying misinformation or triggering the deployment of nuclear weapons.

“We’re approaching this work boldly and responsibly,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote in a blog post. “That means being ambitious in our research and pursuing the capabilities that will bring enormous benefits to people and society, while building in safeguards and working collaboratively with governments and experts to address risks as AI becomes more capable.”

Gemini’s arrival is likely to up the ante in an AI competition that has been escalating for the past year, with San Francisco startup OpenAI and long-time industry rival Microsoft.

Backed  by Microsoft’s financial muscle and computing power, OpenAI was already deep into developing its most advanced AI model, GPT-4, when it released the free ChatGPT tool late last year. That AI-fueled chatbot rocketed to global fame, bringing buzz to the commercial promise of generative AI and pressuring Google to push out Bard in response.

Just as Bard was arriving on the scene, OpenAI released GPT-4 in March and has since been building in new capabilities aimed at consumers and business customers, including a feature unveiled in November that enables the chatbot to analyze images. It’s been competing for business against other rival AI startups such as Anthropic and even its partner, Microsoft, which has exclusive rights to OpenAI’s technology in exchange for the billions of dollars that it has poured into the startup.

The alliance so far has been a boon for Microsoft, which has seen its market value climb by more than 50% so far this year, primarily because of investors’ belief that AI will turn into a gold mine for the tech industry. Google’s corporate parent, Alphabet, also has been riding the same wave with its market value rising more than $500 billion, or about 45%, so far this year. Despite the anticipation surrounding Gemini in recent months, its launch barely budged Alphabet’s stock in Wednesday’s morning trading.

Microsoft’s deepening involvement in OpenAI during the past year, coupled with OpenAI’s more aggressive attempts to commercialize its products, has raised concerns that the non-profit has strayed from its original mission to protect humanity as the technology progresses.

Those worries were magnified last month when OpenAI’s board abruptly fired CEO Sam Altman in a dispute revolving around undisclosed issues of trust. After backlash that threatened to destroy the company and result in a mass exodus of AI engineering talent to Microsoft, OpenAI brought Altman back as CEO and reshuffled its board

With  Gemini coming out, OpenAI may find itself trying to prove its technology remains smarter than Google’s.

“I am in awe of what it’s capable of,” Google DeepMind vice president of product Eli Collins said of Gemini.

In a virtual press conference, Google declined to share Gemini’s parameter count — one but not the only measure of a model’s complexity. A white paper released Wednesday outlined the most capable version of Gemini outperforming GPT-4 on multiple-choice exams, grade-school math and other benchmarks, but acknowledged ongoing struggles in getting AI models to achieve higher-level reasoning skills.

Some computer scientists see limits in how much can be done with large language models, which work by repeatedly predicting the next word in a sentence and are prone to making up errors known as hallucinations.

“We made a ton of progress in what’s called factuality with Gemini. So Gemini is our best model in that regard. But it’s still, I would say, an unsolved research problem,” Collins said.

Music/Radio / Popular Reggaeton Artiste Daddy Yankee Quits Music To Dedicate His Life To Jesus by TemplarLandry: 8:40pm On Dec 06, 2023
I used to love this jam in 2004/2005. Great Reggaeton jam!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCF1_jI8Prk

Daddy Yankee has quit music to dedicate his life to Jesus.

The 'Gasolina' rapper - who is often referred to as the King of Reggaeton - confirmed last year he will hang up his microphone after three decades and eight albums following the release of his LP, 'Legendaddy', and his final tour, 'La Meta (The Goal)', which wrapped on Sunday night (03.12.23) in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

He told fans at the live-streamed event: "Tonight I recognise, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world, that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him.

"For many years I've tried filling a hole in my life that no one could fill. I tried finding a purpose, on many occasions, it seemed as if I was happy but something was missing for me to feel complete."

In Spanish, he said: "I took note of something the Bible says."

Before reciting: "What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?"

In a statement on YouTube last year, the 46-year-old Puerto Rican star - who will now go by his real name Ramon Luis Ayala Rodriguez - said: "This race, which has been a marathon, finally sees the finish line. Now, I am going to enjoy what all of you have given me.

"People say that I made this genre worldwide, but it was you who gave me the key to open the doors to make it the biggest in the world."

Yankee's farewell record, released in March, was an amalgamation of all the styles that have "defined" his career.

The music star has sold more than 30 million records and is best known for his 2004 hit 'Gasolina', which became the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Yankee leaves on a high after scoring a global hit with 'Despacito' with Luis Fonsi in 2017.

A remix of the popular track featuring pop megastar Justin Bieber later topped the charts in 10 countries.

During a dazzling career, the reggaeton icon has scored an impressive haul of accolades, including Latin Grammys, Billboard Music Awards, Latin American Music Awards and an MTV Video Music Award.

Foreign Affairs / IDF Finds One Of The Largest Gaza Weapons Stockpiles Ever Near School, Hospital by TemplarLandry: 3:41pm On Dec 06, 2023
In addition to seizing thousands of munitions, the IDF struck approximately 250 targets over the previous 24 hours.

The IDF engaged hundreds of Hamas terrorists and terror targets and discovered one of the largest weapons stockpiles ever found in the Gaza Strip over the past twenty-four hours the military said on Monday.

The IDF said that it had found one of the largest weapons stockpiles in the history of its operations in Gaza, an arsenal containing hundreds of missiles, launchers, long-range rockets, anti-tank missiles, UAVs, and explosives.

The massive weapons cache was located near a hospital and a school, the IDF reported.

The terror munitions were discovered by the 50th battalion of the 460th brigade. The IDF said that some of the munitions were detonated on site while others were sent for further investigation.

The IDF stated that all of the ordnance was found in the vicinity of densely populated civilian areas, citing the discovery as "further evidence of the cynical use that the Hamas terrorist organization makes of the residents of the Gaza Strip as human shields."

Also, over the last day, the Israel Air Force hit around 250 targets in Gaza, the IDF stated. Troops on the ground worked to locate weapons; Hamas infrastructure, including subterranean structures; and explosive devices.

Additionally, IDF troops directed an IAF strike on two Hamas rocket launchers which had been used to rain rockets down on central Israel on Tuesday.

IDF operates in central Gaza

Israeli troops also directed an airstrike in the Deir al-Balah area in central Gaza. These airstrikes successfully eliminated both Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists and destroyed a number of terrorist-controlled infrastructure.

Israeli troops also hit a terror cell conducting its operations next to a school in northern Gaza, the army said.

The IDF then proceeded to target a subterranean structure in the area of the school. In another local school, troops found more weapons and ammunition.

English Wikipedia raked in more than 84 billion views this year, according to numbers released on Tuesday by the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit behind the free, publicly edited online Encyclopedia. And the most popular article was about ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that’s seemingly everywhere today.
Announcing Wikipedia’s most popular articles of 2023.

From ChatGPT and Cricket to Barbie and Bollywood, these are the 25 most read articles on English Wikipedia this year.

People around the world have a lot of questions. And when they’re looking for answers, they turn to Wikipedia. English Wikipedia received over 84 billion views this year alone, according to data from the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia.

The most-viewed Wikipedia articles of 2023 tell the story of you and society at large seeking out knowledge about our ever-changing world from the world’s largest encyclopedia.

Your curiosity shows the joy of discovery. The sadness of untimely death. The adrenaline of a cricket final. The magic of a day at the movies. The exuberance of hearing your favorite singer.

This is 2023 through your eyes.

The top five articles of the year
#1: ChatGPT, 49,490,406 pageviews
#2: Deaths in 2023, 42,666,860
#3: 2023 Cricket World Cup, 38,171,653
#4: Indian Premier League, 32,012,810
#5: Oppenheimer (film), 28,348,248

ChatGPT is English Wikipedia’s most popular article of the year. The fastest-growing consumer application in history recently reached its one-year anniversary. In that time, it has surpassed one hundred million users and has dominated headlines around the world, sparking debates around the changing role of artificial intelligence, its potential impact on humanity and the tech sector, and the ethics behind it all.

In line with this mass public interest, the English Wikipedia article carried a remarkably consistent level of attention throughout the first half of the year: its pageviews ranged between 100,000 and 400,000 nearly every day. In fact, across all of the languages Wikipedia supports, we registered over 78 million pageviews to ChatGPT articles.

Coming in at second place is the annual list of deaths, a perennially popular article on Wikipedia. To keep its length down, at the end of each month, Wikipedia’s editors split the article into smaller month-by-month lists.

Scroll to learn more about the other top articles, with the full list featured at the bottom.

Sports
#3: 2023 Cricket World Cup, 38,171,653 pageviews
#4: Indian Premier League, 32,012,810
#6: Cricket World Cup, 25,961,417
#9: 2023 Indian Premier League, 20,694,974
#14: Cristiano Ronaldo, 17,492,537
#15: Lionel Messi, 16,623,630
#16: Premier League, 16,604,669

Cricket is one of the most popular sports in the world, but since the Wikimedia Foundation started publishing these year-end most popular articles lists in 2015, no cricket article has ever been among them.

Until now.

In 2023, cricket comprised a full 16% of English Wikipedia’s top 25 articles. The third most-viewed article in our annual list is about the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which received 304% more interest this year vs. its last edition. That included over 1.25 million views on the day of the tournament final.

In the end, Australia was crowned as the World Cup champion, with India coming in second. India’s Virat Kohli was awarded Player of the Tournament, and he received more pageviews on Wikipedia this year (over ten million) than all those recorded for the 2019 Cricket World Cup that year (a bit under 9.5 million).

Our data suggests that a healthy percentage of the pageviews to the World Cup, Indian Premier League, 2023 Indian Premier League, and English football’s Premier League English Wikipedia articles came from people returning to the pages over an extended period of time. While we imagine this was a way to check the latest scores and information, we don’t collect the data necessary to confirm this due to Wikipedia’s strict privacy policy.

Film and television
#5: Oppenheimer (film), 28,348,248 pageviews
#7: J. Robert Oppenheimer, 25,672,469
#8: Jawan (film), 21,791,126
#10: Pathaan (film), 19,932,509
#11: The Last of Us (TV series), 19,791,789
#13: Barbie (film), 18,051,077
#20: Avatar: The Way of Water, 14,303,116
#23: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, 13,392,917

For a good number of people, “Barbenheimer” hype was the story of the middle of 2023. (If you would like to learn more about that phenomenon, Wikipedia has a lengthy and well-cited article for you.)

While Barbie may have outpaced Oppenheimer‘s global box office total by around 50%, Oppenheimer reigned supreme on English Wikipedia with about 57% more pageviews.

People came to Wikipedia to learn more about the race to build the world’s first atomic bomb, led by the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, and how filmmaker Christopher Nolan crafted its narrative and visuals.

Interest in the film was far from limited to English-speaking audiences: more than 47 million people have viewed Oppenheimer‘s Wikipedia articles in all languages this year. Journalists in Italy, for example, took note of the phenomenon in September, writing a slew of articles about the increase in pageviews relating to the film and history of the atomic bomb.

Not far behind Oppenheimer were two more films that shared wildly successful 2023 releases: Pathaan and Jawan became two of the highest-grossing Hindi-language films of all time. Pathaan was released first in January 2023, and broke several box office records. Those accomplishments were short-lived, as Jawan surpassed them after its release in September. Both films featured Shah Rukh Khan as the main lead actor. Around their release dates, both films peaked at over one million views in a single day on English Wikipedia alone.

In late 2022, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour became the fastest-selling in history by a wide margin. Since then, her fandom has only continued to rise, including on Wikipedia. The impact of the tour is so notable that it is documented in a 5,500-word, 300-citation Wikipedia article, separate from another lengthy article about the tour itself. In July of this year, Swift became the woman with the most number-one albums in history. “Swiftmania” is so captivating that it has helped to uplift pageviews of her new romantic partner, American football player Travis Kelce, to about 11 million views this year.

Sadly, two other entries in the most-read list are due to untimely deaths: Matthew Perry, the actor best known for his role on the TV show Friends, and Lisa Marie Presley, the singer and only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley.
