Ron Krivoi's aunt revealed on Monday that Gazan civilians located Krivoi and brought him back into Hamas' captivity.
A 25-year-old Israeli Russian with dual citizenship, Krivoi was released by Hamas on Sunday evening following the Russian governmentβs intervention, in addition to 13 other Israelis and three foreign hostages released on the third day of the Israeli ceasefire with Hamas.
Krivoi was working as a sound engineer at the Reβim music festival when he was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on October 7. The newly-freed Israeli hostage Ron Krivoi escaped his captors by extricating himself from the building where he was being held after it was bombed and collapsed on top of him.
Fleeing the rubble of the destroyed Gazan building, Ron attempted to escape the Gaza Strip on his own, managing to stay hidden for four days straight before being recaptured, his aunt disclosed to KANβs Reshet Bet Radio on Monday morning.
Ron Krivoi's aunt revealed on Monday that Gazan civilians located Krivoi and brought him back into Hamas captivity.
Krivoi was working as a sound engineer at the Reβim music festival when he was kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on October 7.
According to his aunt, he was taken by the terrorists and kept in a residential building in the Gaza Strip. βDue to the bombings, the building collapsed and he managed to escape the rubble and break free,β she explained.
She said that Gazan civilians eventually did locate Krivoi - but brought him back into captivity at the hands of Hamas.
Gazan civilians located hostage during attempts to reach border βHe tried getting to the border. But he didnβt have the capacity to understand where he was or where he needed to go, so he couldnβt navigate through the open field. He was all alone,β Magid said.
βI asked him today: βHow are you feeling? Do you have nightmares?β His answer was: βYes, I have nightmares about the party and from being in captivity, but everything is alright now.ββ
Krivoi was injured when the building came down, suffering from head wounds, his aunt further revealed. βHe has some other injuries as well. He is under medical observation, but he is okay.β https://m.jpost.com/israel-news/article-775321 1 Like 1 Share |

Foreign Affairs / North Korea Claims Its New Spy Satellite Took Photos Of White House, Pentagon by TemplarLandry: 6:50am On Nov 28, 2023 |
North Korea claimed its first spy satellite, which was launched into orbit this month, has taken photos of the White House, Pentagon and nearby US naval stations.
These prominent US sites add to a list of areas North Korea claims to have photographed using its reconnaissance probe that was launched into space last week. The state's official media said leader Kim Jong Un has seen the latest images along with previous photos of Rome, Anderson Air Force Base in Guam, Pearl Harbor and the US Navy's Carl Vinson aircraft carrier.
South Korea salvaged one of North Korea's spy satellites after a failed launch earlier this year and concluded the technology had little military value. While Seoul believes any North Korea satellite would be rudimentary at best, such technology could help Kim's regime in its targeting as it steps up its ability to deliver a nuclear strike.
North Korea had said the satellite would formally start its reconnaissance mission from Dec. 1 after some fine tuning, but the official Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday: "the fine-tuning process of the satellite is being hastened to end one or two days earlier."
There has been no confirmation from the outside world on whether the satellite is operational and North Korea has yet to release any images to the outside world taken by its new satellite.
North Korea has a history of bluster when it comes to satellite claims. Under the leadership of Kim Jong Il - the father of the current leader - North Korea had said it placed a satellite into orbit that was playing revolutionary songs, only to have Washington say the probe was likely at the bottom of the sea. https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/north-korea-claims-new-spy-satellite-took-photos-of-white-house-pentagon-4612274 1 Like 1 Share |

Education / Authentic: The Most Popular Word Of 2023 According To Merriam-Webster Dictionary by TemplarLandry: 6:18am On Nov 28, 2023 |
In an age where Artificial Intelligence (AI) has left people doubting the truth, US Dictionary Merriam-Webster says that 2023's most looked-up word was 'authentic.' The venerable publisher, whose dictionary is especially popular online, said the trend was driven by people reading and talking about Artificial Intelligence, celebrity culture, identity and social media.
This was Merriam-Webster's 20th year of picking one of the half-million words it defines online as the one getting searched most often. 2022's was 'gaslighting' - emotional abuse that makes people question themselves. In 2021, as the Coronavirus pandemic raged, it was 'vaccine.' Words like 'authentic,' 'rizz,' 'deepfake,' 'coronation,' and others defined the year 2023.
Authentic Merriam-Websterβs Word of the Year for 2023 is authenticβthe term for something weβre thinking about, writing about, aspiring to, and judging more than ever.
A high-volume lookup most years, authentic saw a substantial increase in 2023, driven by stories and conversations about AI, celebrity culture, identity, and social media.
Authentic has a number of meanings including βnot false or imitation,β a synonym of real and actual; and also βtrue to oneβs own personality, spirit, or character.β Although clearly a desirable quality, authentic is hard to define and subject to debateβtwo reasons it sends many people to the dictionary.
Authentic is often connected to identity, whether national or personal: words frequently modified by authentic include cuisine and dish, but also self and voice. Celebrities like singers Lainey Wilson, Sam Smith, and especially Taylor Swift all made headlines in 2023 with statements about seeking their βauthentic voiceβ and βauthentic self.β Headlines like Three Ways To Tap Into Taylor Swiftβs Authenticity And Build An Eras-Like Workplace associate this quality with pop-culture superpower.
And with the rise of artificial intelligenceβand its impact on deepfake videos, actorsβ contracts, academic honesty, and a vast number of other topicsβthe line between βrealβ and βfakeβ has become increasingly blurred.
Authentic is what brands, social media influencers, and celebrities aspire to be. Elon Musk made headlines when he said that people should be more βauthenticβ on social media. Apps and platforms like BeReal make recording βauthenticβ experiences their main purpose. No matter how much artifice and calculation goes into the production of these videos, as Rebecca Jennings of Vox puts it, βwherever people are supposedly being βauthenticβ on the internet, the money will follow.β Ironically, with βauthentic content creatorsβ now recognized as the gold standard for building trust, βauthenticityβ has become a performance.
Other words also stood out in the dictionaryβs 2023 data, including:
Rizz Rizz, an example of internet-driven slang, shot to the top of lookups when it was added to the dictionary in September.
As a noun, rizz means βromantic appeal or charmβ (as in βa bro who has rizzβ); as a verb (typically used with up, as in βrizz up that cutieβ) it means βto charm or seduce.β Itβs frequently considered a play on charisma.
Deepfake The quest for authenticity partly results from technologies like the deepfake: βan image or recording that has been convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone as doing or saying something that was not actually done or said.β
In late April and early May, we saw a surge of interest in deepfake when lawyers for Elon Musk argued that he shouldnβt have to give legal testimony about public statements he made, since, as a famous person, some of his statements might be deepfakes. (This argument was rejected by the judge.)
Another spike for deepfake followed in May, when a fan-made ad for Tesla featured a likeness of Ryan Reynolds, and again in June, when online ads for Ron DeSantis used apparently fake images of Donald Trump.
Coronation The ceremony to crown a new British monarchβCharles IIIβcaused this term to spike in May.
Coronation refers to the literal act of placing a crown on a monarchβs head, a synonym of crowning. It is also more figuratively used to refer to the assumption of a prominent position or office, as in βthe coronation of the leagueβs MVP.β
Coronation comes from French, as do so many of the words associated with nobility and royalty, including noble, royal, monarch, and ceremony. These French words are used because the British aristocracy was originally the Norman (i.e., French) aristocracy following William the Conquerorβs victory in 1066. The word has been used in English since the 1300s.
Dystopian A number of events this year drove interest in dystopian. A video produced by the Republican National Committee in early April, and built entirely with AI-generated imagery, portrayed what was widely described as the βdystopian futureβ the RNC asserts will result from the reelection of Joe Biden. And the 54th Earth Day celebration on April 22nd, which followed weeks of record-high temperatures, came with warnings from activists that action must be taken to avoid a βdystopian future.β That future was evoked in June when smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the eastern U.S. creating a βdystopian landscape.β And the year was full of dystopian warnings that AI could eventually replace or subjugate humankind.
Dystopian gets applied not only to frightening real-world issues, but also to entertaining fictional ones. Video games, books and movies depict a dark potential future that typifies the imagined world or society that dystopian so often calls to mind.
EGOT One of the rarest distinctions an entertainer can achieve is winning four particular awards: the Emmy, the Grammy, the Oscar, and the Tony. This accomplishment is referred to by a word made up of the first letters of each award, the EGOT. EGOT was first used in 1984 and was added to our dictionary in 2019.
Lookups for EGOT spiked in February when Viola Davis won a Grammy for her reading of the audiobook version of her memoir, adding to the Emmy, Oscar, and Tony awards she had already received.
EGOT is pronounced as a word as /EE-gaht/ rather than by spelling out its letters. We heard Viola Davis pronounce it when she used EGOT as a verb in her acceptance speech at the Grammys, exclaiming βI just EGOT!β
We donβt currently enter EGOT as a verb in the dictionary, but perhaps this usage will catch on.
X Elon Muskβs rebranding of Twitter as X sent many people to the dictionary to learn more about this unusually flexible letter. It doesnβt just represent a letter and its sound, but also has various meanings and functions: for example, it stands for βan unknown quantity,β itβs a symbol for the act of multiplication, and it is used as a substitute for βbyβ in measurements, as in βThe room was 10βx15β.β
Other letters carry meaning by themselves, (think of F for βfailureβ or to a T meaning βperfectionβ), but X has a mystique all its own. Linguist Marcel Danesi was quoted as commenting that X βreverberates with all kinds of meanings that are intuitive, unconscious, and archetypal.β
Lookups for X spiked 885% on July 23, the date of the rebranding announcement, although the value of the platform has declined significantly since then.
Implode When a submersible attempting to visit the wreck of the Titanic disappeared in June, the search made international headlines. Titan, the world eventually learned, had imploded.
While explode is a common word, implode is encountered less frequently; people turned to the dictionary to understand it. Something that implodes bursts inward or undergoes violent compressionβin this case, from the immense water pressure two miles below the oceanβs surface. The noun implosion also saw a dramatic increase in lookups.
Submersible itself was also a top lookup. A submersible is a small underwater craft used for deep-sea research.
DoppelgΓ€nger DoppelgΓ€nger saw multiple lookup spikes from independent events. Media coverage of two crimesβone in Germany and one in New York, each involving the murder or attempted murder of someoneβs lookalikeβfocused on the word. So did a story about two minor league baseball players who, despite sharing professions, names, and similar physical features (height, coloring, glasses), were shown via a DNA test to be unrelated. And September saw the release of Naomi Kleinβs book, DoppelgΓ€nger: A Trip Into the Mirror World.
DoppelgΓ€nger can refer to a living person that closely resembles another living personβthat is, a double; or it can refer to the opposite side of oneβs personality. In German folklore a DoppelgΓ€nger is a ghostly counterpart of a living person. The word is formed from two words that together mean βdouble goer.β
Covenant Several very different stories contributed to an increase in lookups for covenant, defined as βa formal, solemn, and binding agreementβ or βa written agreement or promise.β
A tragic shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville on March 27th coincided with the first spike in lookups for covenant. The word remained higher during the April release of Guy Ritchieβs The Covenant, a film depicting the rescue of an Afghan interpreter who had saved the life of a U.S. soldier in combat. In May, a much-anticipated new novel by Abraham Verghese, The Covenant of Water, became an instant bestseller featured in Oprahβs Book Club. Finally, reports in early November revealed that the new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, uses an app called Covenant Eyes to monitor the websites he visits, by sharing them automatically with an accountability partner, in this case Johnsonβs teenage son.
Covenant has a religious resonance because of its use in the Bible. It appears over 200 times in the King James Version of the Bible, mostly in the Old Testament, referring to promises of different kinds, sometimes between people, and sometimes between individuals and God. In the Book of Exodus, covenant refers to the Ten Commandments.
Indict Indict was often in the news this year. Former President Donald Trump was indicted in four separate cases now moving through the legal system, and indict spiked by 9440% on March 30, when a New York City grand jury charged the former president in the hush-money case.
Indict is defined as βto charge with a crime by the finding or presentment of a jury (such as a grand jury) in due form of law.β Like most words in our legal vocabulary, indict comes from French (others include judge, jury, arraign, appeal, and acquit).
The silent c in indict is the result of scholars in the Renaissance βcorrectingβ the spelling of the French borrowing by adding the c from its Latin ancestor. Before their tampering, the word was spelled indite.
Elemental In June, the title of the new Pixar film Elemental made lookups spike. Appropriately enough, this title employs the original and oldest meaning of element: βany of the four substances air, water, fire, and earth formerly believed to compose the physical universe.β
With characters that embody fire, water, earth, and air as anthropomorphized qualities, the filmβs plot becomes an allegory about identity and prejudice.
Kibbutz When Hamas launched attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7th, civilians living in kibbutzim were among the targets. A term unfamiliar to many outside Israel, kibbutz refers to a communal farm or settlement in Israel.
Other terms relating to Hamasβ attack and Israelβs military response that saw an increase in lookups were blood libel and intifada.
Deadname Deadname saw a large increase in lookups in March with βParental Rightsβ bills being considered in several states. Such bills require schools to use what many transgender supporters call a βdeadnameββthe name someone was given at birth and no longer uses upon transitioning. While deadname does not appear in legislation, the word was used in media coverage of the issue. Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/word-of-the-year 6 Likes 3 Shares |
