Sports2014 Afcon Qualifying Preview:Journey To Morocco! by teniola55(op):
Seven teams emerged from the second round of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to join the 21 best ranked teams that will be competing at this stage in seven groups.
The winners and runners-up of each group, plus the best third-placed team will qualify for the finals, to be held in Morocco from January 17 to February 8, 2015 .

Guinea – Togo | Friday, September 5
Relocated from Conakry to Casablanca in Morocco due to the threat of the Ebola disease, Guinea, who are playing hosts, will endeavour to kick off their campaign on a positive note in a bid to smooth their path to the finals having failed to appear at the 2013 edition. And with the return of Emmanuel Adebayor and goalkeeper Kossi Agassa, Togo new coach Tchanilé Tchakala is confident the Sparrow Hawks will take three points from their North African trip ahead of the second match day.

Senegal – Egypt, | Friday, September 5
Senegal will be playing at their home stadium of Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar for the first time in more than a year following the 2012 ban on the facility due to match incidents. Organisers are working to mobilise a huge number of fans to support the Teranga Lions against Egypt. Neither team made it to the previous Afcon edition in South Africa, while Tunisia, the third challenger of their Group G, will strive to fight off competition from both to claim one of the group’s two berths.

Ethiopia – Algeria | Saturday, September 6
Fresh from a commendable 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Algeria, who are also Africa’s number one team as per Fifa rankings, would be keen on confirming their current status, against Ethiopia away. The Fennec Foxes new coach Christian Gourcuff says he wants to record a flawless run to the end of the campaign by winning all six games. However, Ethiopia’s performances at the 2013 Afcon and the 2014 World Cup qualifiers are enough proof that they are capable of engaging and stunning the North Africans.

Mali – Malawi | Saturday, September 6
Mali are highly favoured over Malawi in their clash set for Bamako where the Eagles have recorded several victories over their adversaries in recent times. Bearing in mind that their next game will be a trip to Algeria, the Malians will shoot for a convincing win over the Flames in order to cushion their eventual position in the group ahead of the next match day.

Burkina Faso – Lesotho | Saturday, September 6
Burkina Faso, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations finalists, have made little changes to the outfit since their South African adventure. Coach Paul Put is still in command and has made his ambition very clear, “winning all home matches and never losing away fixtures”. Lesotho have never qualified to the finals but displayed their improvement in the second round by knocking out highly favoured Kenya on a 1-0 aggregate, which insiders say has brought much confidence to the team. Facing the Stallions in Ouagadougou will likely show how well the Flames have improved.

Gabon – Angola | Saturday, September 6
Gabon have been struggling to return to the continental scene after co-hosting the tournament in 2012. They have changed coach three times since then with nothing to show for it, not even qualification to the 2013 edition. However, the team remains ambitious and wants to book their place at Morocco 2015 but opening against a side as strong as Angola will tell how truly prepared the Panthers are for the qualifying campaign.

DR Congo – Cameroon | Saturday, September 6
Both teams are regional archrivals and they share Group D with another tough side, Cote D’Ivoire. DR Congo and Cameroon meetings have always been crackers, but the Indomitable Lions will be looking to take sweet revenge on the Leopards for stopping them from reaching the 2014 African Nations Championship (Chan), which ended as a 2-1 aggregate win in favour of the Congolese. Both sides will be seeking for a win ahead of an ultimate clash with the Elephants.

Zambia – Mozambique | Saturday, September 6
Zambia seem fortunate to receive arguably one of the easier groups of the competition. The Chipolopolo will open against Mozambique at home which local pundits predict will go the Zambians way, before subsequently facing Niger and Cape Verde. However, such predictions might be tricky because Mozambique out-performed Tanzania in the second round, while Cape Verde have grown to become a formidable outfit on the continent, as Niger’s consecutive appearances at the Afcon finals off late have given them adequate exposure.

Niger – Cape Verde | Saturday, September 6
The above match appears to be quite a balanced challenge. Both teams are the rising football nations in West Africa, with strong ambitions to maintain their presence at the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. Cape Verde possess a more technical and talented group but Niger can fight until the final whistle, leaving the confrontation up for grabs.

SportsNFF Boss Maigari Released...finally by teniola55(op): 11:01am On Aug 28, 2014
Detained NFF president Aminu Maigari has finally regained his freedom along with fellow executive committee member Chris Green, an aide has informed AfricanFootball.com
“Maigari has been released by the security operatives. He was released in the morning from the special anti-robbery squad after he was handed to them by the Directorate of State Security Service,” said an aide of the NFF boss.
“No charges were pressed against him, neither was he or Green questioned on anything. It was clearly to prevent them from attending the general assembly of Tuesday, which FIFA insisted be presided by Maigari.”
Maigari, it was further learnt, was detained on orders of controversial former Rivers State police commissioner Joseph Mbu, who is now an assistant Inspector general of police.
Incidentally, sports minister Tammy Danagogo, who also was a commissioner in Rivers State, personally came to the SSS office yesterday to pick general secretary Musa Amadu for what later was termed “an elective congress”, which produced Chris Giwa as new NFF president.
Giwa moved into the NFF office Wednesday morning and thereafter addressed a dozen staff members, assuring them of improved welfare in his tenure as NFF president.
World football governing body FIFA are expected to soon rule on the unfolding drama in Nigeria.

SportsCongo Ask CAF For Nigeria Clash Relocation by teniola55(op): 11:25pm On Aug 26, 2014
Congo have submitted a letter to the Confederation of African Football requesting for the relocation of their Group A opener of the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2015 qualifiers against Nigeria, scheduled on September 6 in Calabar.
The ‘Diables Rouges’ are concerned with the recent Ebola outbreak in Africa’s most populated country.
“I think that would be difficult and risky to play in this area. As a matter of fact, neighbouring Cameroon have closed their borders,” Congo coach Claude Leroy explained.
The spread of the deadly virus in West Africa has already led CAF to ask for the relocation of Guinea v Togo and Sierra-Leone v DR Congo, while some question marks have been raised about Côte d’Ivoire v Sierra Leone.
Congo booked their spot in the qualifiers of the continental showpiece after Rwanda were barred from taking part for fielding ineligible striker Dady Birori.

SportsChris Giwa Emerges As New NFF President by teniola55(op): 10:54pm On Aug 26, 2014
Christopher Giwa, the chairman of Nigeria Professional League club side Giwa Football Club, has been elected as the new president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

He polled 27 votes to defeat his challenger former vice president Mike Umeh who got two votes in an election where 29 out of 44 members participated in the voting exercise.

Before the elections, NFF chieftains including the NFF General Secretary Musa Adamu and some states delegates were arrested by the Department of State Security Services (DSS) and interrogated.
The elected officials were then sworn in by a notary public Frank Ike Chude.

Former board member Obinna Ogba was sworn in as vice president as he was unopposed while former security committee chairman, Effiong Johnson emerged the Chairman of Chairmen having polled 28 votes.

The North Central produced Yahaya Adama and Sani Mohammed as board members while Muasu Suleiman and Sherif Inuwa emerged North West representatives in the new board.

Felix Agu Anyansi retained his position on the board to represent the South East alongside Felix Amechi Ogwa.

Deji Tinubu also retained his position as representative of the South West with Otunba Sunday also coming on board.

The electoral process was not coordinated by either the seating president of the NFF or the general secretary Barrister Amadu who allegedly walked out of the election hall at the Chida International Hotels.

Also the vice president that could have stood in for the two allegedly also left the hall before the commencement of the election.

SportsNFF Rescues Afcon & U17 Trophies From Burnt Office Building. by teniola55(op): 5:24pm On Aug 20, 2014
The Nigeria Football Federation Abuja Secretariat has declared that it was able to rescue some of the trophies won by the national teams from its offices after a blaze swept through the building on Wednesday morning.
Among the trophies saved were the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy won in South Africa and the 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup trophy won in the United Arab Emirates.
However, thousands of records and financial documents were lost in the flames which started around 9:30am from a spark in the office of the Accountant.
The fire according to the General Secretary Musa Amadu emanated from the left wing of the third floor of the NFF Secretariat.
The inferno burnt down all the documents in the accountant’s office, swept through the office of the general secretary and destroyed most of the documents in the office and in the offices in the left wing of the building.
Amadu described the incident thus: “I think the fire may have started from a power upsurge that happened at about that time. We tried as much as we can, but it is quite unfortunate.
“I have assured you, we are going to reassess those things that have got burnt, and those missing.
“We want to assure Nigerians that the job of the Federation would not be affected in any way, we would continue our normal duties until we get to the root of the whole thing,” he said.
Amadu who was the on ground to salvage some of the document in his office, said they were able to rescue most of the trophies won by the country’s national teams.
In his reaction on arrival at the Secretariat at about 11.45 am, NFF President Aminu Maigari gave thanks to God that no lives were lost in the inferno.
“We are grateful to God Almighty that no lives were lost in the fire incident, we are optimistic that we would get over this incident, and I am sure that the security agencies would step in immediately to investigate what had happened,” Maigari told media.
Maigari only returned to work at the Glass House on Monday after several months of intrigues which saw him impeached by the board over allegations of fraud but he was reinstated under the orders of Fifa.
Insinuations are rife that the fire might have been caused in order to destroy documents as members of the NFF board are still at loggerheads.
The problems in the NFF have seen contract negotiations with coach Stephen Keshi stall with less than three weeks to the Super Eagles’ opening pair of Afcon 2015 qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.
There is an increasing likelihood that the national team could be handled by a temporary coach before an agreement is reached with Keshi who led them to victory last year and took the team to the second round at the World Cup in Brazil.

SportsKeshi - Victor Moses Is Off Form by teniola55(op): 1:26pm On Aug 20, 2014
Stephen Keshi has told AfricanFootball.com he left out Victor Moses from Nigeria's AFCON 2015 qualifiers against Congo and South Africa because the forward has lost form.
Victor Moses, who has joined English Premier League side Stoke City was conspicuously missing from Keshi's 23-man squad released on Tuesday for next month's AFCON qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.
"I watched Victor Moses at Chelsea's pre-season and he seemed to be struggling as he had limited play time with the club," Keshi told only AfricanFootball.com
"Now that he has joined Stoke City, I think he needs time to get back to the player we know him to be.
“I think it’s time he made up his mind what he wants, if he wants to play football or not."
After emerging as one of Nigeria’s top stars at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, Victor Moses missed the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil on account of injury, before he struggled to make an impact at the recent World Cup.
Last season, he endured a torried time at Liverpool after he was shipped out on loan by Chelsea and this season, he has again been released on loan to Stoke City as he does not figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans.

SportsIt's Keshi's List For AFCON Qualifiers - Maigari by teniola55(op):
NFF president Aminu Maigari has cleared the air by saying the 23 players picked for next month’s AFCON qualifiers were done by coach Stephen Keshi.
Keshi has yet to agree a new contract with the NFF after his initial deal elapsed after the recent World Cup in Brazil.
Negotiations are on-going between the coach and his employers, but with the qualifiers against Congo and South Africa just around the corner, it was expedient to move ahead with preparations for the matches fixed for September 6 and 10.
"We understand the importance having the contract of Keshi resolved," the NFF president told AfricanFootball.com
"I want to assure Nigerians that we would soon be done with talks with the coach. At least you see he has sent us a list. This means that we are making progress.
"We have mandated the secretariat to quickly conclude with the coach so he can resume because we have crucial games next month."

SportsEagles Now To Face Congo by teniola55(op): 6:55pm On Aug 17, 2014
Nigeria's Super Eagles will now host Congo in Calabar in the 2015 Afcon qualifiers after initial opponents Rwanda were disqualified from the qualifying series.
Congo' protests against Rwanda using an ineligible player has yielded fruits as Caf has thrown the Amavubi out of the series.
Rwanda were disqualified from the Afcon 2015 qualifiers for fielding Dady Birori in the play-offs. The player was found to have been playing in the DRC under another name- Agiti Etekiama with a Congolese passport
The decision by Caf is in relation to the protest filed by followed a protest made by the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), which alleged the player suited up for their first leg match of the second round of qualifying played against Rwanda on 20 July 2014 in Pointe-Noire.
Caf has also suspended the player from playing for both club and country till further notice despite claims by Rwanda that they were unaware he had another identity.
Consequently, the African football ruling body said " Consign Congo to the group phase of the qualifiers of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations - Morocco in 2015 in Group A, as replacement for Rwanda."
Nigeria were due to face Rwanda at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar on September 6 in the first of her Group A matches towards qualifying for the Orange Afcon 2015 to be hosted by Morocco.
Defending champions Nigeria are in same group alongside Sudan, South Africa and with this resolution, Congo.
SportsRwanda Thrown Out Of Nations Cup by teniola55(op): 4:27pm On Aug 17, 2014
The Africa Cup of Nations organising committee disqualified Rwanda from the qualifiers for Morocco 2015 on Sunday.
The decision followed a protest made by the Congolese Football Federation regarding the eligibility of Rwandan player, Birori Dady.
Dady had featured in the first leg of the second round qualifier between the two nations last month in Pointe-Noir.
Congo claimed that Dady, who plays for AS Vita Club in Kinshasa, has a different name and age in his passport.
A subsequent Confederation of African Football (Caf) investigation looked at documents provided by the federations of Rwanda, Congo and DR Congo and also heard a testimony from the player on 11 August at Caf headquarters in Cairo.
Whilst the Rwandan FA maintained that to their knowledge the player Dady Birori had one identity, investigations revealed that he was summoned as Etekiama Agiti Tady to join the national team of Rwanda.
Caf established that the player also uses a different age in his passport, and that the two identities referred to a single person.
They have therefore suspended the player until further notice and have banned him from playing for both his club and country.
Rwanda, who beat Congo on penalties over two legs to reach the group phase are disqualified. Congo progress to Group A of qualifying for Morocco 2015 as a replacement for Rwanda where they will meet Nigeria, Sudan and South Africa.
Vincent Nzamwita, the Rwanda FA President confirmed to BBC Sport in Kigali that he had been notified of the news.
"Yes we received communication from Caf about the disqualification."
He however refused to reveal the next step of action.
Caf say they reserve the right to comment on whether they will impose additional sanctions at the next meeting of the Organising Committee scheduled for 17 September 2014.
African football's ruling body also urge other "players and stakeholders to regulate the situation of dual identity."
Caf say the decision takes effect immediately and say that if Rwanda choose to appeal, they will have to do so in accordance with Caf regulations.

SportsStephen Keshi Debunks Reports About Being Offered N7m Contract by teniola55(op): 5:59pm On Jul 31, 2014
While the recent reports provide the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offered Stephen Keshi N7 million monthly for coaching the Super Eagles, the Big Boss says nobody spoke with him about that sum.It was yesterday allegedly discovered that Keshi was “willing to continue” as the Eagles’ head coach with the improved financial conditions of the renewed contract.
However according to .com, when contacted in the USA for confirmation, the former Togo and Mali boss debunked the reports saying:
“No! I have not discussed anything with anybody! I left Nigeria before the Sallah break. I didn’t speak with any of the committee members before I left and I haven’t spoken with any of them on the matter since then. It was only Deji Tinubu who said they want me to continue and I said fine; let them bring up their offer that I may see. That’s it. I don’t know where they came up with N7 million offer from. I am not aware of that.”
Numerous controversies and speculations have been recently surrounding the relationship saga between the NFF and the team’s ex-captain.
The immediate reports after the Eagles’ knock-out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup indicated that he did not intend to stay with the Nigerian team any longer, however later the NFF officials were said to have expressed their interest in continuing cooperation with the coach, who lead the squad to 2013 AFCON victory and to 1/8 of the 2014 Mundial. Various sources provided information on the new versions of the contract with Keshi. Still, the official confirmation on the final deal is yet expected.
SportsKeshi Offered N7 Million-a-month Deal by teniola55(op): 12:36pm On Jul 30, 2014
Nigeria have offered coach Stephen Keshi an improved contract that will pay him seven million Naira a month (over $44,000), a top official has exclusively told AfricanFootball.com
For his first contract, which ran out after the World Cup in Brazil, Keshi was on five million Naira monthly and has now demanded he be paid twice that amount.
The coach, who was not considered for the vacant South Africa post, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are expected to finalise a new deal next week.
A top official who has been part of the contract talks informed that ‘Big Boss’ Keshi has said he wishes to continue as Nigeria coach
"We have had meetings with Keshi and the good news is that he is willing to continue as coach of the Super Eagles," the top official told AfricanFootball.com
"He is only concerned that most of the fringe benefits in his contract were not provided and demands better treatment from the Federation.
"I think the first step was a success and we will build on it because the (2015 Africa Cup of Nations) qualifiers are not far away."
The Super Eagles will in early September begin the defence of the AFCON crown they won in South Africa last year.
They are drawn in a qualifying group that has South Africa, Sudan and either Congo or Rwanda.
