The Elerugun Lineage and Aguo

Within the oral history of the Elerugun family, the name Elerugun is understood to mean "Custodian of the Erùgùn Deity." The family's genealogy traces its ancestral origin to Aguo, in present-day Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State.

According to family tradition, Aguo was an important centre of Erùgùn worship. The tradition remembers the deity as being associated with healing, fertility, protection, and spiritual consultation. It also recalls a sacred stream where worshippers were directed to bathe as part of prescribed religious observances.

Salako Elerugun: Founder of the Ibadan Lineage

Family oral tradition identifies Salako Elerugun as one of the earliest known custodians of the Erùgùn tradition and the founder of the Elerugun Compound in Ibadan.

According to the tradition, Salako belonged to the generation of warriors associated with the re-establishment of Ibadan following the political upheavals that accompanied the decline of the Old Oyo Empire. Like many early settlers, he is remembered as migrating from Oyo territory to the newly emerging settlement of Ibadan.

The Elerugun tradition maintains that Salako did not migrate alone. He carried with him the religious heritage of his lineage, including the custodianship of the Erùgùn deity and a masquerade known as Owolewa, which formed part of the ceremonial tradition associated with the deity.

Upon his arrival in Ibadan, Salako is remembered as establishing the Elerugun Compound in the area now known as Amunigun.

"Erugun'', a little-documented deity remembered through oral tradition and briefly mentioned in nineteenth-century historical literature. It argues that Erugun represents a broader category of Yoruba religious traditions that deserve renewed historical and anthropological investigation.

Yoruba civilisation possesses one of Africa's richest religious traditions. Yet modern discussions of Yoruba spirituality often focus on a relatively small group of well-known Òrìṣà whose worship spread widely across Nigeria and the African diaspora.

This emphasis, while understandable, has overshadowed the existence of many local deities that were once important within particular towns, compounds, and lineages. Some disappeared from public attention because their custodial families embraced Islam or Christianity. Others declined as hereditary priesthoods ended, communities migrated, or oral traditions were not preserved in writing.

One such example is **Erugun**, a deity that survives primarily in family oral tradition and in a brief reference found in Samuel Johnson's *The History of the Yorubas*.
