Politics / Goodluck Jonathan Will Be Stoned If He Attempts To Contests In 2019 – Group by TheHerald: 12:48pm On Aug 06, 2017
A sociopolitical organization under the aegis of Movement For Credible Polls has on Friday disclosed that a former president in the country, Goodluck Jonathan will receive the shock of his life should he choose to contest in the 2019 elections.

The group in a statement released stated that the former president of the country will be stones by Nigerians should he choose to present himself as a candidate in the forthcoming elections.

In the statement sifned by the group’s president, Emma Oketi, the group warned Goodluck Jonathan to bury his ambition adding that he should indeed be wary of persons deceiving him that he still has “unfinished business in Aso Villa come 2019.”

The group further added that Nigerians have not and will not forget in a hurry how the nation was stripped bare under his administration adding that the level of corruption perpetrated during his administration is responsible for the nation’s current woes.

The statement added: “We believe anyone urging the president to contest in 2019 is his greatest enemy. They deceived him in 2015 and left him in the lurch after losing out. Now they are trying to embarrass him further by asking him to contest in 2019.

“As a group, we believe Nigerians cannot afford to have another Jonathan presidency again. If he ventures out to contest, he will be pelted with stones even in his home state of Otuoke.”

Crime / FBI Arrests Nigerian Adekunle Ojo For Identity Theft by TheHerald: 10:48am On Aug 05, 2017
Nigerian, Daniel Adekunle Ojo, who had spent less than 14 months in the United States, has been arrested in Durham, North Carolina and charged with fraud and identity theft offences

The offences stemmed from Ojo’s phishing scheme, using an AOL and GMail email accounts that targeted school districts in Connecticut and Minnesota in an effort to get employees’ personal information and file bogus tax returns.

His arrest was announced Friday by Deirdre M. Daly, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, Patricia M. Ferrick, Special Agent in Charge of the New Haven Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Joel P. Garland, Special Agent in Charge of Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation in New England

Following his arrest at his Durham residence, Ojo appeared before a U.S. magistrate judge in Greensboro, N.C., and was ordered detained pending his transfer to the District of Connecticut.

Prosecutors said a school district employee in Glastonbury, Connecticut, received an email in February that appeared to be sent by another employee, who asked for tax information for 1,600 school district workers. The worker who received the email then forwarded the information, which was used in the scheme to file 122 bogus tax returns seeking nearly $600,000 in refunds, authorities said.

Officials said the Internal Revenue Service processed about six of the fake returns and electronically deposited nearly $37,000 in refunds to various bank accounts.

Investigators linked the email sent to the employee to Ojo, prosecutors said.

Officials also believe Ojo was involved in similar email schemes targeting school districts in Groton, Connecticut, and Bloomington, Minnesota.

In March, a Groton school employee emailed tax information of 1,300 employees in response to an email that appeared to be from the superintendent of schools. Authorities said the information was used to file about 66 fraudulent tax returns seeking about $364,000 in refunds. Officials said the fake returns weren’t processed because they had been flagged as being part of an identity theft scheme after school employees discovered the problem.

Prosecutors also said they linked the email account used by Ojo to a similar scam that obtained tax information for about 2,800 school employees in Bloomington earlier this year.

Eric Placke, a federal public defender in North Carolina who represented Ojo only for his initial court appearance, declined to comment Friday. It’s not clear who Ojo’s attorney will be in Connecticut.

Authorities said Ojo entered the U.S. in May 2016 on a visitor’s visa and failed to leave on his scheduled departure date in June 2016.

Daly urged the public to double-check links and email addresses before clicking on and responding to them, to avoid becoming an identity theft victim.

Politics / Alleged N30trn Revenue Scam: Senate Orders Arrest Of 30 Firms’ Officials by TheHerald: 4:04am On Aug 05, 2017
The Senate has directed the Police to arrest chief executives of 30 firms, including Crown Flour Mills and Glo Mobile, for failing to appear before its committee probing national revenue loss.

The companies are alleged to have been involved in the N30 trillion-revenue believed to have been lost by the country in its maritime sector.

The other companies are British American Tobacco, CCECC, Dana Group, Olam Int. Ltd., Hong Xing Steel Co. Ltd., Visafone, African Wire, Star Comments and Allied Ltd. and Aarti Steel Nig. Ltd.

Others are Abyem-Diva Int. Ltd., Gagasel Int., Friesland Capina, Etco Nig., Edic Chemicals and Allied Distributors, De United Foods, Don Climax Group, Skill G Nig. Ltd., Premium Seafood and La Rauf Nig. Ltd.

Also involved are Standard Metallurgical Co. Ltd., Kam Industries, IBG Investment Ltd., Orazulike Trading Co. Ltd., Popular Foods Ltd., A-Kelnal Integrated & Logistics Services, African Industries, African Tiles & Ceramics and ZTE Nigeria.

The Senate Joint Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff and Marine Transport, handling the investigation had invited 63 firms accused of complicity in the scam but only 33 honoured the invitation.

The order to arrest the companies’ officials was announced by Chairman of the committee, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, at the committee’s meeting on Friday in Abuja.

He said the refusal of the officials to honour the invitation in spite of several reminders was disrespect for the National Assembly.

Uzodinma warned that the 8th Senate would not tolerate such behaviour from anybody or institution, particularly in the present situation that involved Federal Government funds.

According to him, investigations carried out by the joint committee showed several forms of infractions that have cost the country huge amount of money in revenue loss.

He said such development in a country currently in recession was a disservice to it.

”It is no longer going to be business as usual.

”We have directed the Nigeria Police to arrest the heads of the firms and bring them before us.

”If we can suspend our recess as lawmakers to see to the end of this investigation, I see no reason why the firms that have been indicted will not come to defend themselves,” he said.

The chairman asked the firms that honoured the invitation to go through the documents given to them and return next week for defence.

The Senate had mandated the joint committee to carry out extensive investigation into alleged N30 trillion revenue leakages in the import and export value chain between 2006 and 2017.

The committee had already interfaced with commercial banks indicted in the matter as well as relevant government agencies. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Mourners Get Free Sex As Souvenirs After Burial Of Notorious Thief by TheHerald: 10:05pm On Aug 04, 2017
A group of mourners were treated to one of a kind souvenir following the burial of a notorious armed robber in Mbare, Zimbabwe on Monday and Tuesday night.

According to reports, to celebrate the final passing away of the thief, prostitutes blessed mourners present with free sex as a means to celebrate the life after death of the serial thief.

The prostitutes described the late thief who died as a result of tuberculosis as a sex maniac and one of their greatest customers.

H-Metro reported that the infamous thief, identified as Masiyas Mesiyas was before his death responsible for the theft of Jamaican artiste, Elephant Man’s cellphone when he was in the country to perform a few years ago.

Residents in the area reported that Mesiyas was in the same league with the late thief Borris who died near Zindoga Shopping centre while trying to get away from the police during a hot chase.

The funeral of the late thief was themed “Birwai, Sv***ai”.

Speaking on the choice of send forth, a family spokesperson, Brandon Chikukwa, confirmed the free sex offered by the prostitutes to mourners adding that: “I have never seen anything like what I witnessed from Monday night when my uncle died.

“People were celebrating his life in different ways, as they were having sex in cars and at night, people would just go anywhere private and start having sex. The service was being offered by the prostitutes for free to everyone who attended, we just hope they were wearing condoms.

“As a family we do not condone what was happening but there was nothing we could do because he was a people’s person. They were doing what they thought was best to pay their last respects to him.”

Foreign Affairs / A Century Later, Trump Cabinet Restores Christian Ritual To White House by TheHerald: 7:35am On Aug 01, 2017
Some Americans are outraged after it was reported that US President Donald Trump’s administration has restored a Christian tradition to the white house that has not been practiced in at least one hundred years.

The Christian Broadcasting Network reports that weekly bible studies are now a staple feature at the White House.

According to the report, “Some of the most powerful people in America have been gathering weekly to learn more about God’s Word, and this Trump Cabinet Bible study is making history.

They’ve been called the most evangelical Cabinet in history – men and women who don’t mince words when it comes to where they stand on God and the Bible.

Ralph Drollinger of Capitol Ministries told CBN News, “These are godly individuals that God has risen to a position of prominence in our culture.”

They’re all handpicked by President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

“I don’t think Donald Trump has figured out that he chained himself to the Apostle Paul,” Drollinger laughed.

Wealth Secretary Tom Price, Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Agriculture Secretary Sunny Perdue, and CIA Director Mike Pompeo are just a few of the regulars.

“Mike Pence has uncompromising biblical tenacity and he has a loving tone about him that’s not just a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal,” Drollinger said in part. “And then fourthly, he brings real value to the head of the nation.”

Drollinger praised Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who he said also attends the gathering, for quickly turning around and using the lessons of the weekly session.

“He’ll go out the same day I teach him something and I’ll see him do it on camera and I just think, ‘Wow, these guys are faithful, available and teachable and they’re at Bible study every week they’re in town,’ ” Drollinger told CBN, referring to Sessions.

Many liberal Americans took to Facebook to express their anger concerning the development:

Politics / Anambra Guber Poll: 15 Political Parties Endorse Uba As Consensus Candidate by TheHerald: 1:28am On Aug 01, 2017
The Mega Coalition, an alliance of 15 registered political parties, said it had endorsed Sen. Andy Uba as its candidate for the Nov. 18 governorship election in Anambra.

The Chancellor of the coalition, Chief Perry Opara, announced this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Uba is currently the Senator representing Anambra South in the red chamber.

Opara said that Uba emerged from a consensus, and that the decision was arrived at after several meetings by the National Chairmen of participating parties in the coalition.

According to him, after rigorous scrutiny of the numerous candidates for the elective position, Uba of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came top as the best aspirant for the top job.

Opara said that although the APC was not a very popular party in the South-East, it paraded the best and most experienced aspirants in the race.

“There are also other qualified aspirants like Chief George Mughalu, Dr Chike Obidigbo, Dr Obinna Uzor, Mr Tony Nwoye, Mr Barth Nwibe and Dr Obigboh of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“These aspirants also have capacity to win the race, but among them all, Sen. Andy Uba tops the pack.’’

The chancellor said that the coalition’s consideration was not on party platform but on individual that had the capacity to win the state election.

He added that Mega Coalition was not in enmity with APC, PDP or any other party as its consideration was on contesting candidates.

“Our consideration is the candidate who is calm, calculated and has capacity to withstand the storm in running for election.

“A political party is like the vehicle to get to the destination while the `passenger’ is the candidate. We are more interested in the candidate getting to the destination, which is victory.

‘’We don’t want to support a candidate for the sake of printing posters and mounting bill boards. We want to win.’’

He said that when the consensus candidate won, the collation would form a “Government of State Unity’’, assuring that everybody would be carried along.

“We don’t want winner-take-all. We want inclusive government in Anambra.’’

Opara described Uba as cerebral, humane, quintessential, less-controversial, experienced and national figure with capacity to win election the governorship poll.

“Andy Uba stands tall as an Iroko in Anambra State guber election. He will be the bridge between the South-East and the rest of Nigeria.

“He will bring peace and stability to Igboland and be a link to the Federal Government in attracting federal presence to the South-East and Anambra in particular.’’

He urged the APC leadership and the delegates in Anambra to choose Uba as their candidate for the election, explaining, however, that the coalition would not nominate candidate of only the same party in every state.

Opara said that each state shall be treated differently considering its peculiarities and the strength of a party and the candidate.

The Coalition had in June set up a committee to interact with some gubernatorial aspirants in the state and pick a consensus candidate that has the reach and acceptance of the youth, women and the elderly.

The committee was directed to interact with all known aspirants in the election, irrespective of their party affiliations.

It also had the mandate not to limit its search to one political party, “as the desire of Anambra people was to have a less controversial, experienced and a capable candidate.’’(NAN)

Nairaland / General / I Prayed And Fasted For God To Save Us – Released Students Recount Ordeal by TheHerald: 12:38am On Jul 31, 2017
A freed student of Lagos Model College, Igbonla, Epe, has began narrating their harrowing ordeal in the hands of kidnappers for 64 days.

The student spoke to Vanguard anonymously due to an embargo on statements by security agents who are still trying to round up the remaining kidnappers still at large.

The boy told Vanguard, ““We were taken away in speed boats on the day the kidnappers struck.

“They told us not to play smart by attempting to put up any struggle, saying it would lead to our death. We sailed for close to two hours before we reached a camp made of woods.

“We met another group of people at the camp eating and drinking. One of them was directed to take our parents telephone numbers, after they announced to us that we had been kidnapped.

“We spent two days at the camp before we were relocated. Nobody could tell the exact time they relocated us because it was dark”.

“At a point, we lost count of the number of days we had spent in captivity. “By this time, they started beating us. We were also starved of food because they said our parents were not cooperating with them and that they had run out of food stuff.

“Whenever they beat us, one of them would caution them to stop, that we were not responsible for the delay in payment. One day, we overheard them saying that some of their members had been arrested. They became furious and blamed the cause on our parents’ delay to pay. This was when they became brutal. We feared the worst could happen.

“I fasted and prayed fervently for God’s intervention during my stay with them.

“Again, like the first time, one of them woke us, while sleeping, to go into a boat. This time around, they took us on a journey that took several hours before we got to the third camp. None of us knew where we were. Sometimes they would threaten us that we were at a point of no return, if the money they needed was not brought.

“Ironically, it was at this camp that we were well fed. At times they gave us pounded yam and Egusi soup, jollof rice and noodles.

“I am happy to be back home”.

Nairaland / General / Osinbajo Orders Search, Rescue Of Abducted Oil Workers, Lecturer In Borno by TheHerald: 6:52pm On Jul 30, 2017
The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has condemned Tuesday’s attack and abduction of oil exploration workers and members of the civilian JTF in the Lake Chad Basin Frontier Exploration.

This is contained in a statement issued by the spokesman to the Acting President, Mr Laolu Akande on Sunday in Abuja.

Akande said the acting President commiserated with bereaved families and victims of the attack and ordered immediate search and rescue of the persons abducted.

It will be recalled that Boko Haram insurgents attacked oil workers carrying out exploration activity in the Lake Chad Basin area and members of the civilian JTF providing security for them particularly around Jibi village situated between Magumeri and Gubio Local Government Areas of Borno state.

The attack left in its wake a number of innocent Nigerians dead with several others abducted.

According to Akande, the acting President also wished the injured speedy recovery.

He noted that the exploration activity was to open up new sources of oil for the common good of Nigerians.

NAN also recalls that after an emergency meeting with military chiefs on Thursday, the acting President issued fresh directives to the security agencies to strengthen security in Borno State to maintain strong and effective control of the situation and secure lives and property.

He commended the military for the progress already recorded in the rescue of some of the abducted persons.

He said that Osinbajo, however, ordered the continuation of search and rescue missions to locate and ensure the freedom of all remaining abducted persons as soon as possible.

According to Akande, the acting President urged them to use all available and expedient means in the circumstances.

He added that justice would be pursued for the victims and against those who engaged in “this kind of unacceptable, criminal and terrorist conduct’’.

He also paid tribute to the officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their resilience, courage and bravery.

Akande said that the acting President commended the armed forces’ gallant endeavours and sacrifices toward maintaining the peace, security and territorial integrity of the country.

He eulogised the Nigerian soldiers who had paid the ultimate price in that mission and others linked to the current insurgency and gave the assurance that the welfare of the families of the soldiers would be prioritised.

Akande said Osinbajo lauded the diligence of the management and staff members of the NNPC and the lecturers/consultants from the University of Maiduguri in pursuing Federal Government’s resolve to grow the country’s current crude oil reserve base.

According to him, the Federal Government will by no means be dissuaded in potential exploration in the Lake Chad Basin.

“Some of these extraordinarily selfless Nigerians from the NNPC and the University of Maiduguri put their lives on the line that we and generations to come will enjoy the resources of this land.

“We will never forget that sacrifice,” he quoted the acting President as saying.

Although pockets of terrorists had launched attacks recently in Borno State, the Acting President assured the people of the State, the region and indeed Nigerians of triumph.

He said,“the government is not only on top of the situation but will define the end of these atrocities by both winning the war and winning the peace in the North-East.’’ (NAN)

Politics / IPOB Leader Sends Governor Okorocha Quit Notice by TheHerald: 6:16pm On Jul 30, 2017
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has put Governor Rochas Owelle Okorocha on notice as concerns the seat of power in Owerri.

Kanu made the declaration in Imo on Friday, where he spoke to a throng of his supporters in the State capital.

Kanu also said the Nigerian Senate was deceiving Nigerians as regards the constitutional amendments on devolution of power, and resource control. The IPOB leader said restructuring was meaningless and dead ab initio. He reaffirmed the call for Biafra as the only panacea to the problems facing Nigeria.

The IPOB leader also said Nigerian leaders had lost faith in the country as all their wards went to school abroad.

Only recently three prominent Nigerians including the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammad Buhari, celebrated the graduation of their children in British universities.

Other celebrants are the Sultan of Sokoto and Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

He said, “We are in the land of Biafra. I have come to Owerri to spread the good news of the coming of Biafra Republic. I don’t want you to be deceived. Restructuring does not have any meaning. I want you people to go and tell Ohanaeze Ndigbo that. There is no freedom in Nigeria. All their children are abroad studying and enjoying a good environment.

“Only a referendum can solve the problems of Nigeria. Power devolution is not the solution. Resource control is not our problem. What we need is Biafra. They are going about deceiving our people in the name of restructuring. I want to say it again that there will be no election in Anambra State. There will be no election in 2019 in Igbo land. And there will be no election in Imo state.

“Tell Rochas Okorocha that I am a child of God. I want people to tell him that he will leave the Government House in 2019 and go back to Jos where he came from. Let him get ready.”

Politics / Fayose Behaving Like A Man Gone Mad – Oshiomole by TheHerald: 5:13pm On Jul 30, 2017
Former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomole has described the sitting Governor of Ekiti, Ayo Fayose as a mad man.

Oshiomole made the comments whilst being interviewed by Vanguard on the situation of President Muhammad Buhari’s health and all the attendant drama surrounding his ailment and absence from office for close to 3 months.

Oshiomole said President Buhari’s sickness is not as bad as some people think.

“President is sick but it is not as bad as what people are saying. Some were carrying rumor that he was on life support but people have seen at least that, that is not true.”

On the constant attack on the president by Fayose, Oshiomole said, “I don’t like to discuss Fayose because when he makes his statements, it only reminds me of an Igbo proverb which says that if a responsible man is having his bath after a hard day’s work and he removes his dress in a local bathroom and a mad man carries the dress and the man bathing, seeing that the mad man has carried the dress, he runs out naked pursuing him, people will see two naked people running and they will say two mad men.

“So, sometimes, you just allow the mad man to carry your dress and go rather than joining him in his madness.

“One of my very good friends wrote something in the papers criticizing the pictures taken during some APC governors visit to the President, he said maybe a broadcast would have been better. But I ask, if the head of a family is sick and some people went to see him, first there is nothing unusual about that.”

Politics / This Is The Real Problem Between Fayose And Buhari – Dele Momodu Read More At Ht by TheHerald: 3:39pm On Jul 29, 2017
Ovation publisher, Dele Momodu, has in his weekly column ‘Pendulum’ shed more light on the perceived enmity between the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Recall that Fayose has s=constantly attacked the president and his administration as he recently stated that the Nigerian president who is currently in the United Kingdom is being stage managed by the cabal in his administration.

Fayose had also recently implied that the Nigerian president had lost his ability to speak as several other speculations held that he was being managed on life-support.

Reacting to the constant attacks by the state governor on the president especially after Buhari left the country for the second time in the year on May 7 for medical reasons, the Ovation magazine publisher sated that Fayose has hidden pathological disdain for the president.

In the column, Dele Momodu, known to be a staunch supporter of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration wrote: “the Governor of Ekiti State has never hidden his pathological disdain for Buhari. He attacks him with devastating blows and pugilistic upper cuts at every opportunity.

He continued: “Several times, Fayose has declared Buhari dead or incapacitated only to get egged on his face as the President rises like the proverbial Lazarus. He never gets tired of quoting impeccable sources and swearing and threatening to release damaging proof of his false doomsday prophesies.”

He further added that “so far, so good, he’s been dead wrong at every turn! Even if not entirely hale and hearty, Buhari continues to stand ramrod on his feet, albeit looking feeble and weak. There is no doubt that the President is presently enjoying better health than has been the case in the recent past.”

Business / Criminal Fraud Places Union Bank Plc In Serious Financial Jeopardy by TheHerald: 3:04pm On Jul 29, 2017
Union Bank Plc today released its H1 2017 earnings, posting N73 billion in Gross Earnings, a growth of 22.6% over the last year.

However according to insiders, the bank is exposed to litigation issues that could see it in serious financial trouble in the future as events unfold in the courtroom.

Union Bank has had its fair share of legal issues like all players in the banking sector, however its low profitability (the bank posted N9 billion PAT for H1 2017), could take a further hit as legal issues continue to fold.

There are several legal issues plaguing the bank. According to one source with knowledge of the bank’s legal issues, there is a case that has been instituted against the bank for over two decades and is recently making headways, after one of Nigeria’s top legal firms was hired to prosecute the matter at the Lagos High Court.

The matter alleges the bank acted improperly by exercising their right to sell the property of a client, a late accountant from the South-West, in a fraudulent manner thereby causing the family untold hardship, pain and suffering, over a period exceeding two decades.

The family is reportedly in court claiming over nine figures in damages against one of the oldest lenders in the country.

Over the years, the fraud perpetrated by various employees and agents of Union Bank exceed tens of billions of Naira.

For instance in 2009, the Central Bank of Nigeria sacked Bart Ebong, then MD of Union Bank Plc, for his part in a $90 million fraud perpetrated against the Nigerian people. The bank was also at the same time involved in a N500 billion margin loan default. 20 charged were filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission bordering on money laundering and other offences.

Also in 2016, the Federal High Court issued a writ of summon to C. S. Sankey, chairman, Nigeria International Bank Limited, Citi Bank; Emeka Emuwa, managing director, Union Bank Plc and Olusola Fagbure, legal adviser/company secretary, Citibank, to appear before it on Monday, January 25 in a N10.7 billion criminal charge preferred against them and 14 others by the federal government of Nigeria.

Order charges filed against the bank in relation to that suit included 419, conspiracy, and forging of documents against others.

Also in 2014, two senior managers of the bank diverted depositors funds totaling N661 million for personal use.

In the process of their crime, they falsified documents to cover their tracks.

These are just a few of the instances of criminal fraud allegedly perpetrated by the management and staff of Union Bank Plc, which place the company’s financial future in a place of uncertainty.

Other banks in Nigeria have recently been made to settle their legal disputes to the tune of billions of Naira. The advantage the banks have over the customers and other little guys who have been ripped off is they have the money to keep the litigation tied up in the courts for years.

However recent decisions, some even by the Supreme Court of Nigeria have been in the favour of defrauded bank customers, and some litigants are ready to continue spending money to ensure that the banks pay what they owe.

Banks have a fiduciary duty to their clients, and in situations where the breadwinner goes to a bank like Union bank and takes a loan, but is unable to settle it due to his untimely death. And instead of showing professionalism, the bank goes ahead to collude with unscrupulous persons in order to circumvent the wishes of the late customer and dispose of his assets in a fraudulent manner so as to receive illicit gains, such situations are unfortunate.

Ousted Barclays Topshot seeking to increase holding in Union Bank Plc to 44.5%
Union Bank Plc is planning a N50 billion rights issue, shareholders who intend to increase their shareholding in the bank would do well to ensure the bank has disclosed its exposure to potential multi-billion Naira judgments so as to avoid even more litigation in the years, and even decades to come.

One of the bank’s largest investors, Bob Diamond is a former top executive of Barclays Bank UK who was forced to step down amid an interest rate scandal that saw Barclays employees who were directly under his supervision, commit multi-billion pounds fraud in order to make a profit or spruce up their books during the 2008 financial crisis. A crisis that began in Europe and eventually affected banks in Nigeria, including Union bank.

Barclays was fined £290 million (N145 billion) and Bob Diamond was forced to resign. He has since set up shop in Africa were banking regulations are not as stringent as the United Kingdom or United States of America.

Fashion / The Brand New Rolex Even Davido Can’t Buy by TheHerald: 4:29pm On Jul 28, 2017
Luxury items are exactly that for a reason– They call to our covetous nature to own stuff. Nigerian singing sensation Davido knows one or two things about luxury items as he owns quite a few. He also has an affinity for Rolex watches, but he may be disappointed this time as this is one Rolex that might prove to be his white whale. Rolex

Rolex, earlier this year, rolled out an update to its iconic Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona timepiece.

The watch is an absolute peach.

The original racing watch was introduced in the 1960s to help drivers time their laps and was given a modern overhaul that garnered reactions that started at thumbs up and ended with epic proclamations. The bezel on the newer model features Cerachrom, a proprietary material that’s scratch-resistant and whose deep black color won’t fade—making it easy to read when you’re pushing a few hundred miles per hour. Naturally, orders immediately went into overdrive.

The bezel on the newer model features Cerachrom, a proprietary material that’s scratch-resistant and whose deep black color won’t fade—making it easy to read when you’re pushing a few hundred miles per hour. Naturally, orders immediately went into overdrive.

Naturally with anything that has a low level of supply, demand goes mental.

The supply is so low, collectors world over who can generally afford the watch have found themselves on a waiting list. And, because the retailers selling these coveted watches will have to be selective about who gets to buy them,

Oh, it gets worse for Davido.

Retailers are being really choosy about who gets them and this is why the waiting list isn’t a couple of months, no, The New York Times reports the wait might stretch anywhere from two to five years.

To be fair, Davido is pretty young, he could maybe wait– then again they could be discontinued by then.

Ah.

Politics / Senate Votes Yes To Delete NYSC From Constitution by TheHerald: 7:28am On Jul 27, 2017
The Senate has voted to remove the compulsory National Youth Service Scheme from the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This is good news for many young Nigerians, however it doesn’t mean that NYSC is now not compulsory for university leavers.

It is a first step in allowing the Nigerian lawmakers to amend the NYSC decree. This development comes as many Nigerian youth who are fed up with the non-productive nature of the scheme have been clamouring for its termination.

An overwhelming majority of eighty eight Senators voted for the removal of the NYSC decree from the Constitution, whilst 3 Senators voted against the amendment vote.

The lawmakers were very busy during their session yesterday, July 26th, as they also voted on 32 other constitutional amendments including voting for the reduction of the age at which a Nigerian can run for President and the removal of the land use act from the constitution.

Business / Nigerians Slam Senate For Asking CBN To Make Dollar Available At N200 Forpilgrim by TheHerald: 11:30am On Jul 21, 2017
Following the decision or the Nigerian Senate asking the federal government to make the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, supply dollar to intending pilgrims at N200, Nigerians have reacted with heavy criticism of the latest order.

The call which places the subsidy rate for intending pilgrims to Saudi Arabia or Israel at 37 per cent was heavily frowned at by Nigerians who noted that the move will further stress the worsening economic condition in the country.

The Nigerian naira currently exchanges for the greenback at N315 to a dollar and about N365 to the dollar at the parallel market.

The request made by the Nigerian senate on behalf of the intending pilgrims however ignores the provisions in the approved Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, which covers all expenditure plans for the year 2017 and the earlier approved Appropriation Act.

Recall that the motion was brought to the floor of the senate by the committee on foreign affairs on “Extortion of Pilgrims” led by the National Hajj Commission, a former governor of Kebbi State, Adamu Aliero, APC-Kebbi.

Adamu Aliero before the senate said: “The committee strongly recommends the concession of N200 to $1 for 2017 Hajj, to bring down cost to the bearable level.”

In reaction to the move, Nigerians trooped to their social media pages to register their dissatisfaction as some claimed it will further worsen the economic condition of the country by further reducing the nation’s treasury. Others however claimed it is a means to amass wealth by some corrupt persons.

Politics / Anambra State Declares War On IPOB, Members by TheHerald: 10:40am On Jul 21, 2017
The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has declared war on pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, its embattled leader, Nnamdi Kanu and its followers.

The state governor while speaking on Wednesday in Awka, the state capital, stated that he will deal with anyone who would want to cause commotion during the governorship election scheduled to hold on November 18 in the state.

Warning the Nnamdi Kanu-led group to steer clear of the state following a comment issued by the embattled IPOB leader who stated that he will start his Biafra revolution by claiming Anambra state, the state governor insisted that contrary to claims, there will be election in the state.

Threatening members of the pro-Biafra group to stay away or face the full wrath of the law, the state governor said: “We are going to go after them, we will deal with those who said there would be no election in the state decisively.

“People are free to vote candidates of their choice, you can see that in Anambra state today people now sleep with their two eyes closed.”

Crime / OJ Simpson Caught Masturbating By Female Correction Officer, Case In Jeopardy by TheHerald: 10:13pm On Jul 20, 2017
OJ Simpson’s case may have suffered a major setback after he was caught by a correction officer masturbating in his prison cell.

Recall that the prison system strictly forbids the act and for this reason, the former athlete will be facing additional disciplinary hearing.

The former athlete who has been a model inmate until his latest run in was reportedly caught masturbating by a female correction officer in June.

Fears have however been expressed that the recent act may affect the former athlete’s parole hearing when he appears before the Nevada Department of Corrections Parole Board on Thursday.

A source who spoke to Dailymail said: “While it’s not the most serious charge to be written up for in prison, it’s serious enough that any potential parole date may be delayed or his parole denied all together.”

Despite the setback, most observers with keen interest in the case have expressed hopes that the former athlete will be granted parole by the four-man panel on July 20.

Politics / You Are Trying To Defraud Them – Ekiti APC Blasts Ayodele Fayose Over Paris Club by TheHerald: 8:08pm On Jul 20, 2017
The Ekiti chapter of the All Progressive Congress, APC has slammed the state governor, Ayodele Fayose claiming he is brainwashing the people of the state over the new payment of Paris Club Refund.

The state APC stated that the governor who has held several meetings with stakeholders and workers in the state over the release of N4.7bn is attempting to deceive people of the state.

The stance of the political party is contained in a statement issued through its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun wherein the party stated that the Ekiti people are no longer susceptible to the deceits of the state governor adding that the several meetings he has held is an attempt to brainwash them on the state’s financial matters.

The state APC further noted that such fraudulent practice by the state governor is a worn-out tactic aimed to “fraudulently deny workers their salaries and con Ekiti people for selfish motives”.

The statement released by the state APC added: “the governor started his latest trick when he called Labour leaders to a meeting last month that Paris Club refund coming to the state would be N4.7b just to create the impression that he is running a transparent administration. We are aware that after collecting the money, he has started calling another round of meetings saying that N4.7b Paris Club refund will not be enough to pay one month salary barely a month after he confessed that the actual Ekiti monthly wage bill is N1.7b and several months after he consistently lied that the state’s wage bill was N2.6b.”

It further stated: “the man that says he loves the people relies on lies to cheat the people while not compromising his own private comfort. Since the Paris Club and bailout issues became major sources of the state finances, Fayose is no longer talking about the state’s monthly statutory allocations of N1.9b and another monthly N1.3b Budget Support Facility he has taken for 11 months but which he diverted to purposes through which he can make personal gains.

“Up till this moment, Fayose has refused to make public the state internally generated revenue (IGR) profile, which stood at N600m monthly during Kayode Fayemi’s administration before the governor (Fayose) increased rates and taxes paid by Ekiti people, including introducing fresh ones.

“Even though we don’t know IGR figures, we wonder how a governor that rakes in N7.9b in a month through Paris Club N4.7b, Budget Support Facility of N1.3 and N1.9b in statutory allocation could be so callous to declare that the money he has won’t be able to pay one month salary at the time his counterparts in the neighbouring states are promising their workers to pay three months salaries with the current Paris Club refund’

“We wonder why a governor that is daily sacking workers while not employing fresh hands in the civil service would be so callous and mindless in his declaration that N7.9b, excluding the unknown IGR, will not be enough to pay one monthly salary. We know for a fact that so far, all bailouts and budget support facility cash that Fayose has taken were diverted to the flyover and new Oja Oba Market projects awarded to his Ibadan friends for selfish purposes, but like we warned last time, APC will play its role as a responsible opposition party to resist fraud and oppression in the interest of Ekiti people.

“It is on this note that as Governor Fayose is busy in his selfish and wicked manipulation of the people to short-change the state, we hereby reinstate our resolve to resort to the courts and street protests, which are lawful means of rejecting fraudulent and oppressive conducts of leaders, to ensure that Ekiti people get their share of the state’s wealth.”

Health / 5 Things To Stop Doing If You Want To Live Longer by TheHerald: 10:37am On Jul 20, 2017
There are a number of things you can resolve to do in order to turn back your biological clock and live longer, whether you’re in your 20s or 30s, all the way to your 60s, 70s, and beyond. In fact, research has shown it’s never too late to start healthy habits.

But what about the things you might stop doing — in the name of your longevity?

1. Stop eating mainly processed foods

One of the major dietary changes that’s taken place in many countries over the last 30 years has been a shift to consuming more processed foods. Along with processing comes an increase in added sodium, more saturated fat, more sugar, and less fiber. The result? More cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, and diabetes.
There are a number of things you can resolve to do in order to turn back your biological clock and live longer, whether you’re in your 20s or 30s, all the way to your 60s, 70s, and beyond. In fact, research has shown it’s never too late to start healthy habits.

2. Stop smoking

If you’re a smoker, you know how hard quitting can be. Some estimates suggest smoking can rob you of a decade of life.

3. Stop sitting still

If you don’t feel you have time to exercise, consider this: You may not need to hit the global minimum recommendations of 30 minutes a day, five or more times per week, to extend your life.

4. Stop holding a grudge

Anger can be a tough emotion to release, especially if you feel justified in your outrage. Maybe the best question to ask yourself is this -– is it worth the cortisol? Levels of this stress hormone go up when you’re stressed or angry, with negative effects on your heart, metabolism, and immune system. High cortisol has been associated with greater mortality in a number of studies.

Learning to forgive takes practice, but your body will thank you for it.

5. Stop keeping to yourself

Staying social can be a good longevity booster, mostly by helping you manage stress and by strengthening your immune system. Good relationships keep you strong, while bad relationships can leave you in a negative frame of mind, and put you at risk of depression and even heart attacks.

Romance / Before You Vandalise My DM Exercise Caution by TheHerald: 4:50pm On Jul 19, 2017
Ladies Before you Vandalize any DM, Exercise Caution

Funny how a self-acclaimed instagram expert can take a buzzing slogan and try to use it to rewrite the rules of engagement for dating.

Nowadays some are encouraging women to go for what they want and approach men first, and to do the approaching on social media. Now that is a bad idea for a bunch of reasons.

The first compelling reason any woman that does not want to nurse the pangs of heartbreak should consider is by default a lot of people/men do not value what they have not had to pursue.

When I was in college, about 3 women offered to vandalize my penis, I turned them all down, not because they were not attractive or because I did not want to have sex but because I felt I should be the one to decide whom I wanted to have sex with. For a manly man, we like to hunt, to chase and then to be rewarded at the end of the day with the spoils of victory. It is a spoiler when your meal just falls into your lap and says eat me, you begin to wonder if it is some kind of set up.

There are some men who spend months pursuing ladies and as soon as they hit the jackpot, they leave that woman and inherit the title “Yoruba demon”. The man must have spent a fortune wooing you, you fall and then he departs because he has had his taste. Now ask yourself ladies, is that the kind of man that you will vandalize his dm and he will settle down with you? No he may settle down with you for a one night stand but wife material does not slide into the dm uninvited.

Let men do the chasing and as a woman if you have interest, you can leave subtle hints, but remember that in modern dating, entering into someone’s dm unannounced reeks of desperation. Husband material is scarce and as men get older, they realize that they are the prize, not the woman. For every one single man of marriageable age, there are about 3 to 5 single women.

The key to getting hitched is not to announce what many men already know about your ticking biological clock, but to be a woman of value. Have something to bring to the table besides banter or the ability to slay the gram.

Here are a few desirable traits men are looking for:

1. Virtue: a virtuous woman who can find? In these days, it’s getting harder to find a woman who has kept herself for marriage. If you are genuinely one of those ladies, you don’t need to look very hard to find a man willing to treasure you as a life partner.

2. Well educated: its not about being smart enough to come with a witty clapback, but can you engage your partnersmind on several subjects and make him enjoy your company beyond the pretty face, and/or curvy body.

3. Ambitious: some men, especially in this economy, desire a woman who can add value to the bottomline. Do you have good business ideas, a good career or career prospect. If you do, then you don’t need to go jumping around in people’s dm to find love.

4. Homemaker: leave all the feminism banter alone for one second. A lot of good Nigerian men today had mothers that had good careers and were still able to maintain the home. Men are looking for a woman that makes them feel like a man and there is still a place for traditional feminine roles in the home today.

The kind of men a woman has to pursue are not necessarily the alpha males. The alpha male by definition is a go getter. The effeminate men our society is breeding today are the ones seeking equal footing to women and who often spend their time grooming themselves more than even the women, making their hair or beards etc

If you want a man you can share make up tips with, then by all means you may want to start vandalizing dms with immediate effect, but should you desire a man that will cater to you, then maybe you want to just make yourself desirable, and wait for him. Finally ask God sincerely to assist you in your search, because my sister, demons are aplenty.
Joseph writes in from Magodo.

Politics / LG Election: Lagos Govt. Extends Restriction Of Movement By 2 Hours by TheHerald: 4:39pm On Jul 19, 2017
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday announced a slight extension of the restriction of movement during the council election period in the state on Saturday, saying it would now be between 7 am and 3pm.

The State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said in a statement that the extension was to allow for a smooth conduct of the elections and unhindered participation.

He had earlier, on Sunday, said that the restriction of vehicular movement would be between 8a.m and 2pm.

Ayorinde said the restriction of movement would allow the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and the security agencies to distribute electoral materials in good time and ensure a seamless electoral process.

He reiterated the government’s call for a peaceful and orderly conduct by the electorate during the elections that will usher in new Chairmen and Councillors in the 20 Local Government and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the state.

According to the Commissioner, the State Government and security agencies will leave no stone unturned in ensuring a free and fair election, while ensuring safety of electoral officials and voters.

He also urged residents to be peaceful and orderly in casting and protecting their votes for chairmen and councilors who were expected to drive development at the third tier of government.

“The police and other security agencies have been maintaining law and order since the commencement of campaign by political parties.

“They are poised to ensure that the voting on Saturday is conducted smoothly without public disturbance,” Ayorinde said.

He said that all political parties, candidates and their supporters as well as the general public were assured of safety throughout the period of voting and collation.

The Commissioner thanked Lagosians for always being peace-loving.

He urged them to perform their civic obligation by trooping out with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to show their commitment to participatory democracy and the importance of development at the local government level. (NAN)

Health / This Is What Happens To Your Body When You Stop Having Sex by TheHerald: 9:03pm On Jul 16, 2017
Sexual intercourse, or coitus or copulation, is principally the insertion and thrusting of the penis, usually when erect, into the vagina for sexual pleasure, reproduction, or both

While you may have engaged in sex for a duration of time, and want to practise abstinence, it is also necessary to pay attention to your body as you may experience some changes.

Some of the signs attributed to abstinence include:

Your stress levels go through the roof
According to Psychology Today, the endorphins released during sex are ideal for leaving your worries behind and putting an instant smile on your face. So when you’ve gone a while without sex, you might notice that your stress level builds. It’s not only those endorphins that help reduce stress levels, it’s those movements of the body during sexual intercourse.

Sex can be a form of exercise, which we all know fights off stress and anxiety, so if you aren’t getting any these days, try not to skip your cardio workouts.

If it wasn’t bad enough that without sex you’re feeling overstressed, you might also have high blood pressure. One study determined that those who had sex over a two week period had significantly lower blood pressure levels than those who were without sex or even compared those who masturbated or participated in sexual activities that excluded intercourse. So even taking care of things yourself or making out a bit won’t help your stress levels very much. In this case, women actually do need a partner.

Your immune system suffers

Seems like having sex provides some key benefits to our health, but when we’re not rolling around in the sheets with our partner, we actually are more susceptible to illness too.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the DHEA, or Dehydroepiandrosterone, a hormone is released during arousal, with even more released when you orgasm. This hormone gives your immune system a bit of a boost, helping your body to fight against bacteria, viruses, and other pretty nasty germs.

While not having sex certainly doesn’t mean you’re going to come down with some major illness, you’ll be missing out on some of these other great benefits as well.

The DHEA hormone is also said to act as an antidepressant, make your skin look great, help repair any damaged skin tissue faster, and even increase apprehension and learning abilities.

A study of college students also found higher levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that is important for immune function, in those who had sex at least once or twice a week when compared to those who didn’t. So, no sex means no antibody to fight off that flu!

You feel depressed
Abstinence can lead to depression as Psychology Today reported on a study in which 293 SUNY Albany female students were surveyed on their sex habits, such as frequency and whether or not they used a condom. They then gave the same women the Beck Depression Inventory to determine their moods and level of depression.

Turns out those who were having sex without a condom were significantly less depressed than those who were using condoms or not having sex at all. When the mood elevating compounds found in semen are absorbed by the vaginal walls, they can literally cheer a woman up.

A break in sexual intercourse is also often due to a breakup, which can cause depression on its own. Dr. Lauren Streicher, author of Sex Rx: Hormones, Health, and Your Best Sex Ever explains, “You might be depressed because your boyfriend cheated on you and your life is in the toilet, but the specific lack of sexual activity is in no way going to cause [clinical] depression, even though there’s a high correlation

Your vaginal walls weaken
It seems that over the age of 50 or so, women risk not feeling any pleasure during sex if they don’t have intercourse regularly. Typically, the vaginal walls will get thin and weaken to the point of tearing while entering menopause, making sex extremely painful.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to keep doing the nasty well into retirement. Dr. Streicher told Reader’s Digest that thinning of the vaginal walls is due to lack of blood flow, which can be increased by sexual arousal and penetration.

“Older women who are not having intercourse are more likely to have thinning and drying of the tissues,” she said. “A big part of this is blood flow, and we know increased activity increases blood flow.”

If painful sex isn’t bad enough, a side effect of the weakening of a woman’s vaginal walls is difficulty creating natural lubricant, making sex after a long dry spell not only painful but frustratingly dry. In this case, doctors have said if you don’t use it then you will lose it, so end your dry spell and hop in bed with your partner ASAP! You’re never too old to get your freak on.

You won’t contract an STI…most likely

We’ve all had our scares and found ourselves sitting in a health clinic, admitting to a stranger in a lab coat how many partners we’ve had over the years and listing all the symptoms we’re experiencing that have convinced us we’re infected. Usually, it’s just a yeast infection or the result of some seriously tight jeans, but not having sex means you no longer have to worry — about most STIs at least.

While abstaining from sex is the only way to be sure you won’t get HIV, many people don’t know that you can contract by some infections through practically any form of sexual contact. That’s right, you can get herpes from simply making out with someone.
