Health / Deadly Foods You Must Stop Eating Immediately by TheHerald: 5:38pm On Jul 16, 2017
Food is any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for an organism. It is usually of plant or animal origin and contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals.

While everyone tries to keep a healthy diet by eating foods considered to be good for the body, there are still some foods advertised as a healthy option that is unhealthy because they are dangerous for human consumption.

There are dozens of foods which would make this list and it might be hard to avoid them, but let’s take a look at just the top six dangerous foods that you should never eat and remove from your diet if you care at all about your health.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is actually a hallucinogenic. Yes, you can trip on it, but it’s said that eating just 0.2 oz of nutmeg could lead to convulsions, and 0.3 oz could lead to seizures. Eating one whole will supposedly lead to a type of “nutmeg psychosis,” which includes a sense of impending doom.

Potatoes
Glycoalkaloids, also found in nightshade, can be found in the leaves, stems, and sprouts of potatoes. It can also build up in the potato if it’s left too long, especially in the light. Eating glycoalkaloids will lead to cramping, diarrhoea, confused headaches, or even coma and death. It’s said that just 3 to 6 mg per kilogram of body weight could be fatal. Avoid potatoes with a greenish tinge.

Almonds
There are two variations of almonds, sweet almonds and bitter almonds. The bitter ones supposedly contain relatively large amounts of hydrogen cyanide. It’s said that even eating just 7 – 10 raw bitter almonds can cause problems for adults and could be fatal for children.

Raw Honey

Raw Honey because it doesn’t go through the pasteurisation process in which harmful toxins are killed, unpasteurized honey often contains grayanotoxin. That can lead to dizziness, weakness, excessive sweating, nausea, and vomiting that last for 24 hours. Typically just one tablespoon of concentrated grayanotoxin can cause the symptoms above. Consuming multiple tablespoons would be a bad idea.

Tuna

The danger in tuna is the mercury that the fish absorbs. Once in your body, mercury will either pass through your kidneys or travel to your brain and supposedly drive you insane. The FDA recommends children and pregnant women do not consume tuna at all. While it’s unlikely that eating a massive amount of tuna in one sitting will kill you, it’s a good idea to monitor your weekly intake. Click here to visit the Environmental Working Group’s tuna calculator to see how much is recommended.

Cassava
The leaves and roots of cassava are surprisingly rich in cyanide. By this point, we may as well wish cyanide were the most delicious, sumptuous substance on the planet if we had to die to enjoy a bite… there is not much in the way of flavor, though. Cassava is a tropical vegetable originally from South America but has gained popularity in Africa, particularly for its juice, which can be fermented to produce a drink called piwarry.

Nairaland / General / Wife Arranges Own Kidnap To Force Husband To Relocate Her To The U.S by TheHerald: 7:26pm On Jul 15, 2017
Bukola Ogun, 37, said she planned her own kidnap in order to scare her husband into relocating her and children to the U.S.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, said, while parading the suspect on Friday, that Ogun conspired with 3 other persons, including her cousin, to arrange the crime.

He said, “The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command arrested a business woman who conspired with a three-man gang to orchestrate her own kidnap in order to fraudulently obtain money from her husband, Kayode.

The incident happened on July 4, 2017, when three armed hoodlums stormed the residence of the supposed victim and kidnapped her. Barely four hours later, the suspects contacted the husband and demanded a N10m for her release.

The husband, who did not know that it was all arranged by his wife, contacted the police and a manhunt was launched for the hoodlums. Two male suspects were later arrested.”

The suspects arrested are Kayode Adepoju and Olalekan Anafi. Ogun said that her husband, who has dual citizenship of Nigeria and the US, worked for the stock exchange and that the whole thing started like a joke. She added that she lodged herself in a hotel.

“I just woke up one day and thought of a way to make my husband see reason why he should use his American citizen status to take me out of the country. It all started like a child’s play.

I told my supposed abductors to tell my husband that the ransom was N10m although I knew he would not be able to pay such money. He is just a salary earner. I lodged myself in a hotel and I was there for two days.

I went back home on the third day and no ransom was paid.” The husband, who resided in the US for many years before returning home a few years ago, had already begun the process of relocating the family to the US but the wife thought the process was too slow.

They have been married for six years and blessed with two children. The cousin, Adepoju, said, “She called me and said she wanted to stage her kidnap. She said she wanted to scare her husband with it.”

Politics / 6 Reasons Behind Nigeria’s Succession Jitters – Bloomberg by TheHerald: 12:37pm On Jul 07, 2017
Nigeria is awash in nervous speculation over the health of President Muhammadu Buhari, who hasn’t appeared in public since he returned to the U.K. for medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment on May 7. Buhari, 74 and a Muslim, has formally designated his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo, acting president as he did when he was away on medical leave for 49 days from Jan. 20. The prospect of Osinbajo, a 60-year-old Christian, serving out the remaining two years of Buhari’s term raises the specter of sectarian tension in a country that has seen plenty of it in the past. Succession jitters also heighten concern about government paralysis at a time when the economy is in recession.

1. Why does the vice president’s religion matter?

Because Nigeria is divided between a mostly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south, there’s been an unwritten agreement among the political elite since the end of military rule in 1999 that the presidency is rotated every two elections. So if Buhari dies or steps down and is succeeded by Osinbajo — as the constitution dictates — many in the north would probably feel shortchanged. They might insist that Osinbajo promise to step aside at the next elections in 2019 and allow his deputy — who would probably be a Muslim from the north — to run instead.

2. Could someone other than the VP succeed Buhari?

Osinbajo has denied rumors that he’s under pressure from northern politicians to quit rather than be elevated to president. In such a scenario, Senate President Bukola Saraki, a Muslim, would take over, but only as a caretaker president until fresh elections are organized within three months. That would give the north a shot at winning the presidency.

3. Why is this north-south split so pronounced?

Northern Nigeria has a mainly agrarian economy and has long been poorer than the south, which contains the country’s oil wealth and the main commercial hub of Lagos. There are also linguistic and cultural differences. Sectarian tensions are usually worst in so-called middle-belt cities such as Jos and Kaduna, where more than 800 people were killed during riots that followed the 2011 election. In the northeast, Boko Haram’s campaign to impose its version of Islamic rule has killed ten of thousands since 2009. More recently, secessionists in the southeast have tried to revive the state of Biafra. Amnesty International said security forces have killed at least 150 of them in clashes.

4. How sick is Buhari?

It’s unclear. He was making short medical trips to the U.K. even before he took office. Only once did his office reveal a specific purpose: treatment of an ear infection in mid-2016. Otherwise, his spokesmen said that his trips were for tests and that he’s “hale and hearty.” While Buhari appeared in photographs with visitors during his stay in London earlier in the year, and spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on the phone on Feb. 13, there have been no images of him this time around. His aides released an audio message said to be from him during the Muslim Eid holiday, the only time people heard directly from him so far. The lack of full disclosure about his status has spawned speculation in Nigeria that he’s dying.

5. How long can Buhari be away?

The president is entitled to 60 days of annual leave, according to the constitution. By law he can be removed for medical reasons if his Cabinet concludes that he’s become incapacitated, an unlikely act from loyalists, according to Clement Nwankwo, an Abuja-based constitutional lawyer. Only the national legislature has the power to unseat Buhari. For that to happen, two-thirds of lawmakers and the ruling party must support the move.

6. What challenges would a successor face?

His successor would face the tough task of reviving an economy that shrank for the first time in a quarter century last year and diversifying it from oil, which accounts for almost all exports, as well dealing with resurgent ethnic tensions in the wake of demands for secession as Biafra in the southeast. They would also need to win back the trust of foreign investors, who fled in the past two years as Buhari and the central bank opted to peg the naira instead of letting it drop along with crude prices, as other producers such as Russia and Kazakhstan did with their currencies. Other problems include corruption, which is still rife, and bureaucracy, both of which businesses say stifle their operations.

Politics / Nigeria’s Horrors And Hopes by TheHerald: 11:09am On Jul 07, 2017
It’s easy to write off Nigeria as a place destined to squander the potential of Africa’s largest population and oil reserves. Under successive governments, corruption has flourished, poverty has increased and religious rivalries have festered. Since 2014 — the year Nigeria temporarily overtook South Africa to become Africa’s biggest economy — it has been crippled by the crash in crude prices and a renewed bombing campaign by militants targeting oil pipelines. It’s also battling the Islamist insurgency of Boko Haram, which has fueled humanitarian crisis that’s displaced as many as 7 million people. Meeting the needs of Nigeria’s 180 million citizens is only going to get tougher — the United Nations expects the population will more than double by mid-century, overtaking all nations bar China and India. Is Nigeria doomed?

The Situation
President Muhammadu Buhari, a 74-year-old Muslim from the north and former military ruler, took office in 2015 as the first opposition candidate to win a Nigerian election. The vote was seen as a critical test of Nigeria’s ability to hold a free and fair contest and break a pattern of violence, offering a chance for the nation to set a new course. Since then, his popularity has waned. Buhari spent more than seven weeks on sick leave in the U.K. in early 2017, fueling concern about government paralysis and speculation he won’t be able to complete his term. The economy shrank for the first time in 25 years in 2016 and inflation soared to 18.5 percent. The crash in energy prices was always going to make Buhari’s job tough. But critics say his refusal to allow a weakening of the currency, the naira, made a bad situation worse, sending foreign investors fleeing and creating a shortage of dollars to pay for imported goods. Buhari has tried to clamp down on corruption while driving back Boko Haram in the north and grappling with renewed violence by rebels in the oil-rich south.

The Background
The ethno-religious rivalry is a legacy of colonialists who bundled a Muslim-ruled north with the south’s majority Yoruba and Igbo Christians to create Nigeria in 1914.

In the north, the British ruled indirectly through emirs, while in the south they had a tighter grip and allowed missionaries to spread their religion. Today, more than half of people in the north live in poverty, while the south is endowed with all of Nigeria’s oil wealth and Lagos, the main commercial hub and home to 15 million people. High oil prices sent Nigeria’s economy soaring from 2000, though inequality is stark. Weak governance and poverty in the north bred resentment that gave birth to Boko Haram, whose campaign of terror since 2009 has led to the deaths of more than 20,000 people. The jihadists captured world attention in 2014 when they kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in the village of Chibok.

The conflict has spilled over into neighboring countries such as Cameroon and Niger, which have worked together to push back the militants. Pipeline bombing by a different group of rebels in the Niger River delta, along with kidnappings and pirate attacks, have driven investors such as Shell and Chevron to divest from onshore oil fields and focus on easier-to-secure installations off Nigeria’s coast.

The Argument
To optimists, rising incomes and a surging, young population give Nigeria the potential to follow in the footsteps of hot emerging markets like India or China. That could spur development and provide a model for African democracy.

But first the country needs to curb corruption and improve slow and inefficient institutions such as the judiciary and the civil service. Nigeria must to overcome its divisions and improve basic service, as the vast majority of its people live without regular access to electricity and have poor schools and hospitals.

Fewer petrodollars might drive the development of manufacturing plants and help Nigeria break out of the so-called resource curse. What is certain is that Nigeria is too big and important for the rest of the world to ignore.

Nairaland / General / Dokpesi: N2.1bn Contract For Media Campaign Not In Compliance With BPP Procedure by TheHerald: 9:13pm On Jul 06, 2017
A prosecution witness, Babatunde Auye, on Thursday told the Federal High Court, Abuja, that the N2.1 billion media campaign contract awarded to Daar Investment was not in compliance with the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) procedure.

The witness who is a procurement officer was the 6th prosecution witness to testify in the ongoing trial of the former Chairman of Daar Communication Ltd, Raymond Dokpesi.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), Auye said he started working with Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) since June 2010, as the Director of Compliance, Certification and Monitoring.

He said he was the head of the department and their responsibilities were to ensure compliance with the provisions of the Act and also conduct proof review of contract.

Auye further said that for the procurement of goods and services, procurement entities are mandated to place public advertisement to solicit for proposals for the intended goods and services.

He said there is a closing date for the solicitation and on the closing date, the bid will be publicly opened, then the procurement entity will tender an evaluation report.

“The evaluation report primarily consists of the performance of all the leaders and the recommendation for the winning leader.

“The procurement entity will proceed with a request to BPP to issue certificate of `no objection’ and the request comes with all the procurement records, most especially the submission of the recommended winning leader.

“The BPP, as soon as it receives this request, will conduct an independent review of the process based on the document given to us.

“If the BPP is satisfied that there had been substantial compliance with the provision of the goods and services under the Procurement Act 2007, a certificate of no objection is given.

“This certificate of no objection is required as it becomes an instrument which must be available before any payment is made,” he said.

The witness added that in December 2015, the EFCC wrote to BPP saying that they were investigating the request for contract awarded to Daar Investment.

He said that when they searched their records, they found out that Daar Investment was not involved in contract that was brought to BPP or issued certificate of no objection.

He also said that Daar Investment never supplied goods or render services to the Federal Government or feature in any activity that came from BPP.

The witness, however, read the four mandate of N2.1 bn payment for media campaign to Daar Investment Ltd, signed by retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, former National Security Adviser.

Under cross examination by Dokpesi’s counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), the witness said the procurement office is in no position to ascertain if the said service were rendered based on report which the defence tendered as evidence.

He said they conducted search based on the request EFCC sent to his office, but subsequently in their investigation they checked their data and found no information concerning Daar Investment.
After the cross examination, the defence counsel informed the court of an application, seeking the release of the defendant’s international passport to enable him travel abroad for medical treatment.

The prosecution did not oppose the application.

The judge, Justice John Tsoho, granted the defence application and ordered the release of the defendant’s passport.

Tsoho adjourned the matter until Oct. 18 and 19 for continuation of trial.

It will be recalled, Dokpesi was arraigned along with his company, Daar Holding and Investment Limited on a six-count charge of money laundering.

He was charged with receiving N2.1 billion from the Office of the former National Security Adviser, for media coverage for the PDP’s Presidential campaigns between October 2014 and March 19, 2015. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Government Bans Mini Skirt, Others For Female Civil Servants by TheHerald: 10:36am On Jul 05, 2017
The Ugandan Government has issued a new dressing policy to its public servants which aims to promote decent dressing in the work place.

According to the new dress code contained in the circular issued by the government, civil servants were warned to “dress decently” which includes the ban on cleavage revealing dresses and brightly colored braids for female civil servants.

Other instructions contained in the circular include the ban on hair extensions, sleeveless blouses or any clothing made out of see-through material for female workers.

For men, the circular stated that men in workplaces must be seen on long-sleeved shirts, jackets and ties, and loose trousers with staff members who fail to comply facing strict penalties.

The dressing guideline issued by the Ministry of Public Service applies to all non-uniformed civil servants although there have been speculations that the new guideline is aimed more towards the female folks.

The guideline however allows female workers to wear pant-suits but they are warned against wearing tight fitting clothing as their dresses and skirts must at least be knee-length.

The further further addresses the use of accessories which it stated must be moderate and modest.

Flat, open shoes amongst other foot wears were also banned in the circular with exceptions granted in cases where one can prove that it is for medical reasons.

Men have also been warned against brightly colored shirts and keeping their hair as hair length should be maintained short and neat.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says Etisalat and its creditors have successfully reached an amicable resolution of key issues pertaining to the 1.2 billion dollars indebtedness.

Mr Tony Ojobo, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, said in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday that a smooth transitional process was currently ongoing on mutually agreed terms.

He said that the amicable resolution would allay the fears of stakeholders on enquiries regarding the current position on Etisalat Nigeria.

Ojobo said that the commission was confident that the amicable resolutions reached by the parties would further strengthen Etisalat’s capacity to continue to provide services to its over 20 million customers.

According to him, the resolutions will help Etisalat fulfil its obligations to its other stakeholders as a fast growing business concern.

“This is regardless of any changes that the parties have agreed to Etisalat’s ownership, its board and/or executive management.

“We further wish to assure that as empowered by the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, the commission will continue to work assiduously with all industry stakeholders.

“This is to ensure that the Nigerian telecommunications industry remains capable of playing its critical role as a key driver of national socioeconomic development,” he said.

Ojobo said that the NCC was mindful of the need to sustain the industry’s significant contribution to the National GDP, employment and infrastructure roll-out at all times.

He said that the commission’s intervention in the debt matter was informed by these considerations and was pleased about the success of the ongoing process.

“The commission also wishes to acknowledge the pivotal role of the Central Bank of Nigeria in resolving the matter in a manner that protects the interests of all stakeholders, especially the creditor banks and Etisalat’s over 20 million customers,” Ojobo said. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / NDLEA Arrests 1000 Drug Suspects In Anambra by TheHerald: 9:35pm On Jul 04, 2017
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in Anambra, has said that no fewer than 1000 people were arrested for suspected dealings in illicit drugs in the last six months.

Mr Sule Momodu, the Commander of the agency, made this disclosure on the occasion to commemorate the 2017 edition of the United Nations Day against illicit drug abuse and trafficking in Awka on Tuesday.

He said that 10 of the suspects had been convicted while 150 cases were still pending at an Awka Federal High Court.

Momodu said the event, which was usually celebrated on May 26 was shifted to July 4 by the Federal Government due to Sallah.

He explained that the agency executed 100 raids in and around the state during the period under review.

Momodu said that parents must always identify with their children’s aspirations and needs in life, so as to guide them accordingly.

He insisted that the fight against illicit drugs required the efforts of government at all levels, religious leaders and traditional rulers.

Also, Mr Abdul Momodu, the Assistant Director, Training at the NDLEA headquarters, identified poor parenting, poverty and poor opportunities for education, as some of the factors that made children vulnerable to illicit drugs.

Momodu, who is a guest lecturer at the event, observed that drug abuse had great influence on organised crime and urged parents to be patient with their children or wards to enable them develop strong bond with them.

He also advised parents to give adequate attention to their children instead of being busy with the pursuit of material wealth.

Momodu challenged parents to always play a supportive role by praising their children more often than condemning their actions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in continuation of its drive to ensure liquidity and stability in the foreign exchange (Forex) market, has injected the 195 million dollars into various segments of the inter-bank foreign exchange market.

A survey of markets in the Bureau de Change segment (BDCs) in Abuja, showed that the naira exchanged at an average of N360 to a dollar in the BDC segment of the market.

Okorafor said that the Bank’s continued intervention was aimed at strengthening the international value of the Naira, while ensuring accessibility to the greenback by customers who required it for genuine purposes.

Nairaland / General / FIRS To Join Automatic Exchange Of Information To Reduce Tax Evasion by TheHerald: 3:58pm On Jul 03, 2017
The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Babatunde Fowler said the organisation plans to join the global forum on Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) to reduce tax evasion.

Fowler disclosed this on Sunday in Lagos on the sideline of the just concluded workshop on Automatic Exchange of Information for tax purposes.

The workshop was organised by FIRS, Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for tax Purposes.

Fowler said that AEOI would help the country to increase its tax revenue for national development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the AEOI provides for the exchange of non-resident financial account information with the tax authorities in the account holders’ country of residence.

Participating jurisdictions that implement AEOI send and receive pre-agreed information each year, without having to send a specific request.

It addresses tax evasion, tax havens, offshore financial centres, tax information exchange agreements, double taxation and money laundering.

The forum works under the auspices of the OECD and G20 and focuses on increasing the standard for information exchange.

He said that it was imperative for the country to join those countries using the AEOI because of the benefits attached to its usage.

Fowler said, “In Africa, it is clear that we need to help each other and the only way we can help each other is through this automatic exchange of information.
“When we look at sources of revenue, all of assets such as oil, iron, diamond, we have

it all but at the end of the day, it is not sufficient to fund the respective governments.

“Some countries have different tax systems but at the end of the day, each African country needs to maximise its revenue through taxation and the avenue of doing that is through information exchange.”

The executive secretary said that connecting to the exchange would also help in monitoring the citizens who made money through illegal activities and then invest the proceeds outside the country.

“A lot of people talk about African leaders taking money out of their respective countries and investing it not only in Europe but in other African countries.’’

Fowler said that those host countries don’t ask for information in terms of the source, the tax payments of those individuals or organisations that made such investment.

According to him, such act poses danger to the stability of the economy and also the type of investment that is accepted.

He said that those who make money through illegal means evade tax and invest the proceeds on properties in developed countries and other African countries.
Fowler said, “USA has a scheme now for all Americans that have investments or have bank accounts outside America.

“They have given the countries where they have those accounts a certain time limit to provide that information to them even without any international legal agreement.

“So, if developed countries can be looking at their bottom-line in terms of tax revenue, then

I appreciate this team for their efforts and interest, because they don’t owe us any obligation.” (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Court Fixes Oct. 11 To Hear Suit Challenging Alleged Disruption Of Tuface Idiabi by TheHerald: 3:25pm On Jul 03, 2017
A Federal High Court, Lagos has fixed Oct. 11 to hear a suit by a Lagos-based lawyer, Chief Malcolm Omirhobo, seeking the enforcement of the fundamental rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, liberty and association.

Omirhobo had in a class action, sued for himself and on behalf of millions of Nigerians, over an alleged disruption of a Feb. 6 planned mass protest by popular Nigerian musician, Innocent Idibia a. k. a. 2face.

Joined as respondents in the fundamental rights suit are: the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney-General of the Federation. the Commissioner of Police Lagos State and the Attorney-General of Lagos State.

In the suit numbered FHC/CS/ 842/17, the lawyer is seeking among other reliefs, a declaration that by the combined effects of Sections 39 to 41 of the constitution, it is the duty of the Police to provide security for intending protesters.

He avers that a failure of the police to provide the requisite security measures in favour of the planned protest which had been slated for Feb. 6, constitutes a breach of citizens’ fundamental right to peaceful assembly.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Omirhobo announced appearance for the applicant, while there was no legal representation for the respondents.

He informed the court that he had yet to serve processes on some of the respondents in Abuja, and urged the court for time to do the needful.

Consequently, Justice Chuka Obiozor ordered that all processes be regularized.
He adjourned the suit until Oct. 11, for hearing.

Omirhobo is seeking a declaration that the coercion and intimidation of 2face, by threatening to arrest him, if he dared to lead the planned protest, amounts to a breach of his right to freedom of association, expression and movement.

He also seeks a declaration that the intimidation of 2face by the police, leading to a cancellation of the planned protest, which was meant to march against the rising wave of hunger and recession in the country, constituted a breach of citizens’ right to freedom of expression.

The applicant is therefore, seeking an order of perpetual injunction, restraining the respondents from further preventing the applicant or other aggrieved citizens of Nigeria, from organizing or convening peaceful assemblies, meetings or rallies.

He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further issuing threat statements to members of the public, and other interest groups from exercising their fundamental rights.

The applicant also calls for a public apology from the respondents to the generality of Nigerians, for frustrating a planned peaceful protest.
Obiozor will hear the case on Oct. 11. (NAN)

Nairaland / General / Family Feud: How Messi’s Mother Tried To Ruin His Wedding by TheHerald: 8:30pm On Jul 02, 2017
Barcelona star Lionel Messi married longtime sweetheart and mother of his children, Antonella Roccuzzo, in a civil ceremony yesterday but not without controversy.

It has been reported that the football star’s mom tried to upstage the bride by wearing an identical white dress

Messi’s family and the Roccuzzos apparently aren’t all on very friendly terms and Messi’s mother seemed to go out of her way to register her displeasure.
The wedding preparations had already been dogged with problems as rumours abounded about a long-standing rift between Messi’s mother Celia Cuccittini and Antonella’s side of the family. .

Argentinian media had reported that the Messis had booked an entire floor of the City Center Rosario hotel complex, with Antonella’s family occupying another floor, because the two families are not on speaking terms
Things got to a head when Celia arrived with husband Jorge on the red carpet wearing a silver white lace gown which was strikingly similar to that of the bride. .

Argentinian custom already sees it as a mark of disrespect to wear the same colour as the bride but to then wear something not just of the same colour but also a similar design was seen as the height.

It was reported that Hours before the wedding, another Messi family member confirmed rumours of a feud within the family. .

One of the footballer’s aunts was caught out live on TV revealing bitterly that she hadn’t been invited to the wedding. .

When the woman found out she was live on air she hung up, and when the show called again she answered in tears, blamed Messi’s ‘horrible’ mother Celia for being shafted from the ceremony. .

She added that Celia had ‘split up’ the family, complaining that more relatives from her side of the family had received invites to the wedding than that of Messi’s father, Jorge.

Nairaland / General / New York Bronx-lebanon Hospital Shooter Identified As Nigerian by TheHerald: 2:31pm On Jul 01, 2017
Dr Henry Michael Bello, the gunman who shot six people at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Centre in New York on Friday, has been identified as a Nigerian.

Some Nigerians in New York, who knew Bello, confirmed to the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday. And the NYPD has also identified him to be a Nigerian-born doctor.

Bello, 45, shot dead a woman, on the 17th floor and injured at least six others on the 16th floor, before killing himself the New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neil, said.

Five of his victims were seriously injured and “fighting for their lives”,

Bello went into his former workplace wearing a white lab coat with an AR-15 machine gun hidden underneath with the intention of targeting the same individual.

NYPD officials said Bello asked for a specific doctor on the 16th floor but when he was told the doctor was not there, he became angry and started shooting at everyone.

Officials said Bello tried to set himself on fire before committing suicide.

Reports said Bello, who was hired at the hospital in August 2014 as a house physician, had past arrests for sex abuse, turnstile jumping, burglary and public urination.

In September 2004, he was arrested and charged with sex abuse and unlawful imprisonment after a 23-year-old woman told officers he had grabbed her crotch area outside a building on Bleecker Street in Manhattan and tried to penetrate her through her underwear, reports said.

Court records indicated that in September 2004, Bello pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment in the second degree, a misdemeanour, and was sentenced to community service, while the felony sexual abuse charge was dismissed, according to reports.

He was going to be fired by the hospital, after reports of sexual harassments, but instead chose to resign in February 2015 in lieu of termination, reports further said.

Reports from the New York State Education Department said Bello had received a limited permit to practice as an international medical graduate in order to gain experience so he could be licensed.

The permit was issued on July 1, 2014, and expired on July 1, 2016, while he also had a pharmacy technician license that had been issued in California in 2006.

He went to medical school on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean.

A photo provided by authorities showed him dead on the floor of the hospital, wearing a bloodied doctor’s coat.

Law enforcement officials described Bello as transient recently, with at least five different addresses since he left the hospital. (NAN)

Health / A Poverty-stricken Childhood Could Increase Heart Failure Risk As Adults by TheHerald: 9:04am On Jun 30, 2017
A new research study has traced an alleged link between poverty in childhood and increased incidences of heart failure as adults.

The claim was posited by researchers based in Finland after analysing data of household income for hundreds of children born in 1980.

According to TheCable.ng, they discovered that kids from poor families were more likely to have an enlarged, poorly functioning lower left heart chamber and a sign of heart failure three decades later as opposed to children who were born rich.

“There are continuing socioeconomic inequalities in health across generations and across countries,” said Rebecca Hardy, from the Institute of Epidemiology and Health at University College London in England.

“Poverty has shown to be consistently related to cardiovascular disease and other health outcomes in adulthood, these associations cannot be entirely explained by adult employments and earnings.

“Obesity, poor health habits or the emotional environment within the family could play a role.

“The study can’t actually prove that poverty led to poor health, but this association remained even after researchers took into account age, sex, standard risk factors for heart disease, and participants’ earnings as adults.”

In an editorial written by the researchers about the study, it was said that more research is needed to find the best ways to target these income and health inequalities, as they may vary from place to place.

Nairaland / General / European Court Sentences Sick Baby To Death by TheHerald: 2:23pm On Jun 29, 2017
A European Human Rights Court has given its final verdict on a case of human rights that will compel a couple to allow their sick baby to die.

The parents of the baby, Chris Gard and Connie Yates have been in a long legal battle to save their baby who is suffering from a serious genetic illness.

According to reports, the baby is currently on life support while treatment options were being considered.

At 8 weeks old, Charlie was diagnosed with mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome and is considered to be only one of 16 babies worldwide with this disease.

His condition is progressive, currently incurable and eventually fatal.

Charlie’s parents prayed the court to determine if they, as parents, have the right to continue to provide medical treatments for their son or if he should be allowed to die.

The parents of the 10-months old baby wants the court to let them use a potentially life-saving drug from the U.S. on their son.

They believed that the drug (which is still experimental), would help their son’s genetic condition rather than allow him to die as doctors have recommended.

However a June 27 ruling of the court held that the application by the parents was ‘inadmissible’.

The court said that the baby was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress in pursuit of treatments that were unsure.

It added that any additional treatment would continue to cause harm to the baby stressing that its ruling is “Final”.

“The EHRC also removed the interim measure to keep Charlie’s life support in place.

Meanwhile, Charlie’s parents have so far raised over £1.3 million through a GoFundMe account for his treatment.

With the ruling of the court, the parents are unsure what they want to do with the money.

They plan to donate some to the U.S. hospital willing to treat Charlie, while the rest will be put into a charity for other children with similar mitochondrial conditions “so that nobody else ever has to go through what we have.”

Foreign Affairs / CNN Official Admits To Fabricated Stories About Trump, Says It’s All For Ratings by TheHerald: 11:35pm On Jun 27, 2017
Project Veritas; an undercover investigation project has just released a video in which a senior CNN producer admits that the network’s constant harping about the President Trump/Russia scandal is mainly for the ratings.

The video shows a man identified as CNN Health supervising producer John Bonifield responding to questions being asked by an undercover reporter.

“Why is CNN constantly like, Russia this, Russia that?” the undercover reporter asks?

Bonifield responds, “because it’s ratings. Our ratings are incredible right now.”

Further on in the video, the undercover journalist asks, “but honestly, you think the whole Russia sh*t is just like, bullsh*t?”

“Could be bullsh*t,” responds Bonifield. “I mean, it’s mostly bullshit right now. Like, we don’t have any big giant proof.”

“And so I think the President is probably right to say, like, look, you are witch hunting me,” Bonifield continue later on in the clip.

Alarmingly, Bonifield also goes on to claim that in an internal CNN meeting, CNN CEO Jeff Zucker said, “good job everybody covering the Paris climate accords but we’re done with it, let’s get back to Russia.”

The video also shows Bonifield admitting that he has not seen evidence that Trump has committed any crimes.

“I haven’t seen any good evidence to show the president committed a crime,” Bonifield says in the video.

These startling admissions from a CNN producer on hidden camera video come amid many other comments the video shows him making that are particularly problematic for a network in crisis.

The Project Veritas video was released on Tuesday amid the worst scandal in CNN history.

Zucker, the network president, is currently leading an internal investigation into a fake news hit piece that CNN had published Thursday night then retracted late Friday after a Breitbart News investigation.

Politics / Kola Aluko’s $50million New York Pent House Foreclosed by TheHerald: 11:27pm On Jun 27, 2017
Energy tycoon and Nigerian playboy Kolawole “Kola” Aluko may lose his 79th-floor penthouse to bank foreclosure.

New York Post reports that the 48-year-old business tycoon, who is friends with Jay Z, Beyoncé and Naomi Campbell hasn’t been paying his bills on the $50.9 million luxury condo, and a European bank is forcing a sale next month.

79th floor penthouse belonging to Kola Aluko about to be foreclosed due to bills not being paid by the Energy tycoon
The Luxembourg-based Banque Havilland, which issued a $35.3 million mortgage on the 6,240-square-foot spread at 157 E. 57th St., has listed as collateral Aluko’s 213-foot yacht, the Galactica Star, and is looking to collect what it’s owed plus interest, court documents show.

On top of the unpaid mortgage that came due last fall, Aluko also has been racking up maintenance fees and taxes on the property. He has not been seen for some time, prompting speculation that he is hiding out on the Galactica Star.

The boat which Aluko rented to Jay Z and Beyoncé in 2015 for $900,000 a week was last registered in Freeport, the Bahamas, on May 3, but is currently “out of range,” yacht trackers said.

Lately, Aluko has been dodging Nigerian authorities, who in February tried to freeze his assets including the apartment as part of a money-laundering probe.

Aluko, who claims Switzerland as his residence, was among those who allegedly obtained lucrative contracts from Nigeria’s former oil minister, who has also been accused in a $1.76 billion scheme to defraud the government of oil sale profits that both have denied.

The alleged plot may have parked the money in assets around the world, including jets, automobiles and pricey real estate in London, Sweden, Dubai, New York and California.

Aluko has been busy flipping many of the expensive properties he’s bought; selling off previously bought properties in California and Florida

Culture / Why Do Young Nigerian Men Want Women To Pay On Dates? by TheHerald: 5:43pm On Jun 27, 2017
Joro Olumofin is a social media influencer who runs an Instagram love doctor page where he allows his approx 200k page followers tackle relationship issues emailed in from other members of the page.

Recently he has been asking why Nigerisn women don’t want to pay on dates at all. And the topic has been raising a lot of eyebrows, courting controversy and different views over the subject matter.

What immediately comes to mind is “is chivalry dead in Nigeria?” By the rules of old school, a man has always traditionally been the provider. That is his natural gender role. It is his safe space, the reason Tarzan beats his chest and swings off with Jane into the night.

Joro says in a video on the women paying subject, ” “Hi guys, I wanna just drop something here about this issue of paying on dates; ladies paying on dates. Some ladies don’t want to pay on dates at all, even if it is the fifteenth date; she doesn’t care, she is not paying.

He continues, “I had a very very interesting chat with a group of people yesterday, that lasted for almost two hours; two hours of arguing on who should pay on a date and who shouldn’t pay and my own thought is this; From the third or fourth date, you should at least offer to pay for a bottle of water, pay for your own cab, buy your own petrol. Contribute something apart from showing up and looking pretty.

“I saw a video yesterday, that people kept tagging me on where the girl said; my hair cost this, my shoe cost that. Come on, the guy too came prepared and was wearing nice very very nice shoes and native as well and what some ladies don’t understand is that there are some ladies out there who pay on dates; the first, second, third dates. Guys would rather go out with these ladies who pay on dates than the ladies who don’t pay. so I’ll advise you; buy a bottle of water.”

Recession ti take over. It is either that or the natural instincts of a man are being eroded. If you haven’t committed to a woman by the 5th to the 14th date, you are possibly one of those types they call Lord of the Rings special assignment bearers and as such you should be made to pay a premium on dates. If you have committed to a woman and she happens to believe you, she will not even demand further dates from you. She will prefer to Netflix and chill.

The problem with men today is a lot of them want to go on dates whilst they should be hustling. A wise man once said “you lose money chasing women but you never lose women chasing money.”
If one is not prepared to work, why should one be prepared to reap the rewards of working. So many beta males now are driving women towards feminism by lying to them, breaking their hearts after deceiving them and leading them on.
Many more men have descended into gold digger1 status and they want a woman that will take care of them. An effeminate trait by design.

Another problem is men are not dating the woman they would like to marry but the woman they want to sleep with.

Let us not act like all women are innocent either.
If it takes 15 dates to get to know a potential partner, then you should opt out and look for a fish in the sea that is more closely suited to your appetites.

If you are so desperate to see her then spend that check or just fall back and stay in your lane. Maybe if the youth spent less time dating and trying to solve the national quagmire we are all faced with, Nigeria will forge ahead.

According to the Vanguard newspapers, the stunning beauty who emerged Best New Actress in Ghana at the Ghana-Naija Showbiz Award held in Lagos, Nigeria, recently, has set herself aside from the pantheon of women who believe both men and women should be equal stakeholders in marriage.

Nairaland / General / Spain Deports 23 Nigerians For Committing Various Offences by TheHerald: 4:32pm On Jun 27, 2017
The Spanish Government on Tuesday deported 23 Nigerians for committing various offences in the country, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

They were deported barely five days after 34 Nigerians were sent home from six European countries for committing immigration-related offences.

NAN reports that 34 Nigerians were jointly deported by six European countries on June 22 for committing immigration-related offences.

The deportees were sent back home from Switzerland, Germany, Iceland, Austria, Belgium and Hungary.

NAN gathered that the new set of deportees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMlA) Lagos, at about 6.40 a.m on Tuesday.

The new deportees, comprising 21 males and two females, were brought back in a privilege style aircraft with registration number EC-IZO.

DSP Joseph Alabi, the spokesman of the Lagos Airport Police Command, confirmed the development to NAN.

Alabi said that the deportees were received by officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Police.

He said that others also on ground to receive them were officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to him, nine of the deportees, who were deported for drug-related offences, were handed over to the NDLEA.

He said that two others, who were deported for criminal offences, were handed over to the police.

Alabi said that the remaining 12 deportees, accused of breaching the country’s immigration rules, were profiled and allowed to go to their respective destinations. (NAN)

Health / Increase In Females Abusing Drugs In Yobe State, Worrisome -NDLEA by TheHerald: 8:52pm On Jun 26, 2017
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yobe has described as ‘worrisome’ increase in number of females abusing drugs in the state.

Commander of the agency in the state, Mr Apeh Reuben, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Monday that young girls between the ages of 15 and 35 were increasingly involved in drugs consumption and abuse.

“Some of the females consume and abuse multiple drugs, especially Tramadol, Amphetamine and Cannabis,” he said,

He called for partnership with Yobe government to curtail the ugly trend in the interest of the individuals and the state.

“This will have devastating consequences on the future of the state if adequate measures are not taken at the right time” he warned.

Speaking on the constraints of his agency in the state, Reuben said inadequacy of vehicles and accommodation for addicts being counseled, were their major challenges.

He said the addicts were being accommodated in rented apartments, stressing that ensuring the welfare of such people, was paramount.

Reuben said in spite of the challenges, his command was doing its best, adding that last year, no fewer than 98 drug dependent persons had been counseled.

According to him, the agency is taking the campaign against drug abuse to schools in line with this year’s theme of the international day against drug abuse, which was celebrated on June 23.

“The theme, tagged ‘Listen First to the children’ is the first step to assist children and youth to grow healthy and safe from drug abuse.(NAN)

Health / Three Most Destructive Nutrition Lies People Believe And Practice by TheHerald: 7:07am On Jun 26, 2017
Nutrition is the science that interprets the interaction of nutrients and other substances in food in relation to maintenance, growth, reproduction, health and disease of an organism.

This includes food intake, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism and excretion.

Our health is very important hence our Nutrition is an aspect of our life that should be taken seriously.

There is no shortage of health advice out there, and no shortage of bad advice to go along with it. Some misguided notions are harmless—but others are outright dangerous and can lead you down the road to chronic health problems and may even trim years off your life.

Many Nutrition myths which have been spread repeatedly over the years especially by public health authorities are usually mistaken for the truth.

Below are top three Nutrition lies that people tend to believe is true

Lie #1: Breakfast Is the Healthiest Meal of the Day, and You Should Eat Many Small Meals a Day
There is now a good deal of research supporting the health benefits of intermittent fasting—which is what you are really doing whenever you zip out of the house in the morning without breakfast.

Recent studies suggest that intermittent fasting can provide the same health benefits as constant calorie restriction which many studies have shown to dramatically increase life span in animals. It may also be helpful for those who cannot successfully reduce their everyday calorie intake

Intermittent fasting and continuous calorie restriction have both been shown to produce weight loss and improve metabolic risk markers. However, intermittent fasting tends to be slightly more effective for reducing insulin resistance.

Lie #2: Saturated Fat Causes Heart Disease
The dangerous recommendation to avoid saturated fat, which arose from an unproven hypothesis from the mid-1950s, has been harming people’s health for about 40 years now.

According to a statement realised in 2002 by the Nutrition board, it states that saturated fats and dietary cholesterol have no known beneficial role in preventing chronic disease and are not required at any level in the diet.”

Similarly, the National Academies’ Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get 45-65 percent of their calories from carbohydrates, 20-35 percent from fat, and 10-35 percent from protein. This is the polar opposite of an ideal fat to carb ratio and virtually guarantees you a heightened risk of disease.

Most people benefit from a diet where 50-85 percent of daily calories are derived from healthful fats. However, you need very few, if any, carbohydrates for optimal health. Although that amount of fat may seem like a lot, fat is very calorie-dense, and will therefore still constitute the smallest amount, in terms of volume, on your plate.

The truth is, saturated fats from animal and vegetable sources provide the building blocks for your cell membranes and a variety of hormones and hormone-like substances, without which your body cannot function optimally.

Soy Is a Health Food
A lot of health effects has been linked to Soy according to science. Soy which is considered as a health food is a perfect example of a lie that was strategized for marketing, to which millions of people believe in.

It is important to note that unfermented -soy products are not healthful additions to our diets, regardless of the age or gender.

Some of the sicknesses associated to unfermented Soy are:
Breast cancer, Brain damage, Heart disease, kidney stones, Malnutrition and many others.
