Business / Beverage Distribution Energy Drink/vodka by TheMaveri: 11:04pm On May 01, 2008
Besides manufacturers themselves, who are the major beverage (alcoholic and non-alcohol) distributors in Nigeria?

I was always under the impression that we as Nigerians are big drinkers, but apparently, we're not too keen on spirits. Just wondering if it's worth the effort to import and distribute a premium brand of vodka there?

Any suggestions/opinions are welcomed.

Thanks

TV/Movies / Re: How Can One Make Money With Good Movie Stories by TheMaveri: 10:14pm On Apr 10, 2007
there are millions of places on the internet you can read about screenwriting. That will be a good start. But in the mean time, get a notebook and write down all your ideas. Once you think your story has taken shape, then you can start formatting it into a screenplay. It's a long and tideous process, but it's worth the effort. And if you truly believe you have great ideas, then there's no reason not to attempt to write. When you finish your first draft of the screenplay, that's when the work really begins. You have to sit down and thoroughly go through it, eliminating the junk and adding more substance. Depending on the writer/experience, this can take any where from a month to years to do. Always give it to others to read too, if they don't understand it, then you didn't do your job. EVeryone will have an opinion and suggestion. It's up to you to take it or leave it.

No go and start writing, what you do when you complete it is another story all together!
TV/Movies / "the Lot" New Reality Show: by TheMaveri: 7:14pm On Feb 22, 2007
Hey guys, if you've been dealing with "Idol" fever, chances are you've seen the commercial for the new reality show "On The Lot." If you haven't, On The Lot is a new reality show that will premiere this summer. It's formatted like American Idol and another reality show called Rockstar. Each week, the selected filmmakers will have Dreamworks Studios at their disposal, to make a short film. Each film will be shown on the air and the audience will vote and decides who stays and who goes home.

Well, I submitted my short film CLIMACTIC for a chance to be on that show and it's been accepted,  My viewership count is pretty low at the moment because my movie just showed up on their website a few days ago, even though I had uploaded it back in January.

If you're feeling supportive check out my film on their website. You can log on and rate/review my film. Thanks in advance for your support.

TV/Movies / Re: I Need A Digital Video Camera by TheMaveri: 6:56pm On Oct 18, 2006
Well in that case, yeah, you're right. I thought you were looking for one to shoot the flick. You can get a cheaper one for all the things you mentioned, including location scouting and the rest. In fact, depending on the nature of your story, you can even incorporate footage from that camera to your flick, ie, if say you have scenes where a character is recording something with that particular camera, you can cut into footage from what the character is recording to give your audience another perspective or what that character is capturing.

Seun:

Hello,

Where do you think I can get a very good video camera for someone with a low budget?  I only need VCD quality for now, and I really want to buy from a shop that has a lot of video cameras to sell.

I know about:
  http://www.computerport.biz/categorylanding/C23/c39
  http://www.whogobuy.com/biz/brownmark/listings/
  http://shopforless.com/Nigeria/shop/products.asp?cat=12&sub=68

The cameras in these places seem to be either expensive or of unknown quality.
Do you have any advice for me?  I want to get the camera as soon as possible!  20-40k budget, max 60k.

Thanks.

A camera in the 60K ($480) range is not exactly what you need to be using to shoot your flick, not that you can't do it. But don't base it on "VCD" quality per say. Why? Well, because, what you see on VCD is highly compressed to fit into 760MB, that doesn't mean they shoot it on low quality cameras. They actually shoot with high quality cameras, however in order to get them into VCDs(which basically is your regular CD that you use to burn music, in most cases maximum 800MB) you need to compress the files and in so doing the high quality is reduced to what you see. If you shoot with an already low quality camera, your finished project will be highly degenerated when you compress the footage to put on VCD. You're better off renting a good camera to shoot with.

Art, Graphics & Video / Re: Video Editing Software by TheMaveri: 4:56pm On Jul 20, 2006
Raymand is right. It's not just about how much hard drive/memory space you have, though those are very important to even allow you download and edit. However, when saving the file, or rather exporting your finished edited version, it's up to you to save it in the format you want and the file size you desire. Unfortunately, you can only capture your footage in quality it was shot. It's an average of 3 to 4 minutes of footage per Gigabyte.

If you wanted to put your final edit on a regular CD(not DVD) you can do so by saving the finished file as a VCD format. (In Premiere Pro at least, I'm not sure of other editing software) When you export it as a VCD, it will automatically shrink the file for you. You can also export it as a regular avi, or mpeg etc. Keep in mind that using Windows Moviemaker software(comes standard in most XP versions) you can convert your avi file to wmv, and even set the file size you want it to be. You can look for Sorensen Squeeze also.

My two kobos, hope it helps.

PS:

Tishbite: thanks friends,
i a still waiting to knw which video editing software i could use for editting movies. i discovered that adobe priemere or aftereffect does not give enough classic effects needed in a good video performance. i need your thoughts.

I beg to differ on your statement above. Premiere Pro and Affect Effect are definitively not FCP/Shake or Avid/Combustion, however, they come loaded. It all boils down to who's using them. If you don't know what you're doing, or don't understand how to use them, of course you're not gonna come up with ground breaking editing and special effects. The out of package cookie cutter effects that come standard with them are so cliche and over used anyway. You just need to take time and explore the programs and understand them, then apply your creativity. For instance, I have Lightwav and Maya 7(3D modeling programs) these programs where used in for 90%(Maya) of the effect in the Lord of Ring movies amongst other HOllywood blockbuster. Obviously, they are quite capable of doing great things, however, I don't even know where to start with them. Because I haven't had the time to sit down and learn them doesn't mean they suck, it just means I don't know the programs yet.

Music/Radio / Re: 2Face Idibia Finally Releases Another Album? by TheMaveri: 5:49pm On May 31, 2006
I never really had much interest in the music scene in Nigeria, and it wasn't my industry anyway. However, I was exposed to P Squared through a friend who was involved with them. They make good music, but their style is not original at all. Nonetheless, they got it going on.

On the other hand, a friend of mine did a rap remix of African Queen on his album and that was how I got to know about Tuface. My interest peaked when I was recently hired to direct him in a concert in Baltimore(alongside Amplifyd Crew, Banky & Majek Fashek). In order to create a lighting and visual style for his performance, I requested a copy of his album so I could listen to his music to help me design and coordinate his performance, and I must say his music and style is very good and unique. His performance was off the hook, and everyone else that performed that night seemed to be on top of their game, even Majek in his dreadful looking phase.

Tuface is working on his new album right now, and discussing plans to shoot a new video for his first single. I personally think the guy has done well. Kenny and D1 are doing a good job with and for him. We should be proud of our musicians for putting a positive spin to Nigeria internationally, from P Squared to Tuface and everyone else in between, both established or struggling,

My two cents!
Music/Radio / Re: Krazie Or Twista by TheMaveri: 4:17pm On May 11, 2006
I think Twista just raps fast all the time. Now Krayzie, that bro can flow like no other. BIG FAN. Listen to "Gut Ya Twisted, "

He can be super fast when he wants, but he's so much better than Twista
