Chinua Achebe was a famous Nigerian Writer. He was born in the Eastern part (Ogidi town) of Nigeria on the 16th of November 1930. His popular name was derived from his full name, Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe.

Achebe was raised in a Christian home. His father, Isaiah Okafo Achebe, a teacher and evangelist. His mother, Janet Anaenechi Iloegbunam, a leader among church women and vegetable farmer.

Chinua Achebe was to study medicine in the university college, now known as the University of Ibadan, on scholarship. He changed his course to English literature because of his passion for the African culture.

He was appointed research fellow at the University of Nigeria and became professor of English, a position he held from 1976 until 1981 (professor emeritus from 1985). (Britannica)

He is known for many great works in Africa literature, but his masterpiece is Things fall Apart, first published in 1958. Few more of his books include; No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God, A Man of the People, Anthills of the Savannah, There Was a Country: A Personal History of Biafra.

He died on the 21st March 2013.

The fading role of Alarina (An intermediary) in Nigerian culture and the increase in divorce rate.

Africans are known and can be criticized for many things in the world, but divorce is not one of them. Among the unnoticed sources of world problems today, divorce rate is one of them. This do not just affect the man and the woman, it gets extended to have a massive impact on the children and the society at large.

As for Africa, one of the most disgraceful acts is divorcing who you have claimed to the world to love with all your heart. This is not so in the western world. As for the western world, they are as proud as using a ring on their divorce fingers to tell the world at large even with a sight on them.
Many indicators were actively in place to help Africa stand out of this ‘mess’. One of them which involves the third party is the place of ‘Alarina’ (An intermediary) between lovers. This individual gets involved in any marital journey right from the beginning or early stage and excuses himself or herself immediately the lovers are joined.

Divorce Rate In Nigeria.
Nigeria has a very low level of divorce rate compared to the western world. Part of the factors which made the country appeared on the lower rate is the fact that very low percentage get married through modern law.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (as cited in the Vanguard Nigeria, October 21, 2020) ‘Just 0.2% of men and 0.3% of women have legally untied the knot.’ This made it so difficult to have an accurate divorce rate as most people who ‘divorce’ might end up separating without any legal way of doing it.

Despite this good record for Nigeria society, divorce rate is presently at its increase in Nigeria as we have it in the western world. According to a report by the Nigerian Catholic Reporter, ‘Divorce rate in Nigeria seems to be rising. The main reasons are incompatibility and intolerance of couple’.
One of the factors responsible for this indicated reasons for the increase in divorce rate in Nigeria is the absence of Alarina (An Intermediary) between lovers as we have it before the advert of civilization. Firstly, it needs to be set straight that cheating is not allowed and not in anyway recommended or encouraged. Christianity preaches against second wife. Islam on the other hand do not allow cheating, if at all you need another woman, do the needful and make her a wife and not mistress.

To those with mistress, stop being dramatic by rating your mistress above wife, thinking your mistress is better than your wife.

A peaceful life is a life of satisfaction with what you have, where you are and pursuing your dreams with the understanding of happiness.
