Romance / ‘breastfeeding Is For Babies, Not Husbands’ by THENATIONNEWS(m): 7:53pm On Aug 06, 2015
Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof Wale Oke has urged men to stop competing with their babies to suck the wives’ breast. Oke enjoined the men to allow their babies to enjoy their natural meal.

He spoke yesterday at the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). The programme was organised by LASUTH Community Health Department in conjunction with the hospital’s Pediatrics.

According to him, the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding are many.

He said: “When a mother breastfeeds her baby, it creates bond between them. It is also a natural family mechanism as mothers cannot get pregnant. Breastfeeding mothers do not have bone diseases, breast and ovarian cancers.”

Oke said the state has created an enabling environment for mothers with its policies to work and still feed their babies.

“Working and breastfeeding can go together if mothers try because it is necessary to have healthy babies,” he said.

Wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs Bolanle Ambode urged mothers to breastfeed their babies exclusively for six months so that they can be healthy.

This, according to her, will prevent babies from coming down with childhood diseases, such as cough, diarrhea and catarrh, among others.

Mrs Amode, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Civil Service Pension Office, Mrs Ademola Olabowale, said medical science has made it known that breast supplies basic nutrients to newborns, adding that the breast milk remains the most important protein for babies’ growth.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and mixed breastfeeding up to two years,” she said.

Breast milk, she said, usually helps to build the immunity for the newborns, saying it would protect them from childhood killer diseases.

The state government, she said, has reviewed maternity leave for women in the state Civil Service from three to six months, adding that Lagos State is the only state in Nigeria where men go on paternity leave to support their wives with the burden of raising a new baby.

Head of Department, Community Health Dr Yetunde Kuyinu said the week would help to improve babies’ health.

She said the WBW is celebrated every year from August 1st to 7th in more than 170 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies.

She said working mothers can actually breastfeed their babies.

“It is a known fact that many of our working class nursing mothers face a lot of challenges combining breastfeeding with work either at their work setting or at home. They tend to stop breastfeeding very early in the life of their babies, thus losing the dual benefits breastfeeding provides for both mother and child,” she said. http://thenationonlineng.net/breastfeeding-is-for-babies-not-husbands/

Nairaland / General / Open Letter To Black Man In White House by THENATIONNEWS(m): 3:28pm On Jun 30, 2015
“Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe, that something inside of them was superior to circumstances.” – Bruces Barton.

Years back, I became interested in the startling story of one of the finest American presidents: Theodore Roosevelt. After reading something very striking about him somewhere, I jumped into the study of this bright and enigmatic leader. In the course of my dramatic search, I later discovered that the famed and one of the longest serving United States presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was related to him (note: Franklin was his cousin). Surprisingly, other information and facts began to emerge, much to my intellectual excitement.

Interestingly enough, one of the items that sparked up this article was when I realized that this widely-known great president of the United States, added the adjective, ‘WHITE’ to the official presidential residence of today’s U.S. presidential lodge, the famous ‘White House’. Immediately, something struck the ‘walls’ of my inquisitive mind. Visit for full letter: http://thenationonlineng.net/new/black-man-in-white-house/

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Monday sentenced a Ghanaian, Patrick Mensah, to 17 years imprisonment for dealing in a banned narcotic without lawful authority.

The convict had pleaded guilty to dealing in 27.6 kilogrammes of “vegetable leaves” which proved to be cannabis sativa when tested.

He was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a one- count charge on April 2.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. Orji Kalu, said the offence contravened Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Justice Abang said: “I am satisfied that the accused person committed the offence and he is hereby convicted as charged.”

The judge described Mensah (29) as an ungrateful foreigner who entered and was accommodated in Nigeria since 2010 only to pay the country back with evil.

In handing the sentence, the judge said it would help discourage crime in the society.

“A decision of the court of law in a criminal matter like this should serve as deterrence to other Nigerian youths.

Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama has explained that he was not officially asked to attend a Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) disciplinary committee on Tuesday.

The NFF feels that Enyeama was in breach of its code of conduct.

The goalkeeper made “uncomplimentary remarks” about security in Kaduna ahead of June’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Chad.

“I respect my country and those in charge of our football, which is why I find the whole thing strange,” he said.

“As the captain I only raised our concerns about the venue before our game which didn’t go down well with the football authority.

Musicians and actors under the umbrella of Film and Video Producers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) have taken their war against piracy to the streets.
The group held a peace walk in Lagos against piracy last Saturday.
The walk began at Planet One Hotel at Maryland through Opebi Link Bridge and ended at the Lagos Television (LTV) in Ikeja.

Nairaland / General / Court Fails To Give Judgement In Fani-kayode’s Case by THENATIONNEWS(m): 1:17pm On Jun 18, 2015
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Thursday failed to give judgment in the money laundering trial involving a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, due to the absence of the prosecution counsel, Mr. Festus Keyamo.

The judge chose not to deliver the verdict in Keyamo’s absence, although the lawyer was represented in court.

Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), urged the judge to go on and deliver the judgment since it was ready.

He said the law did not make it mandatory that a prosecuting counsel must be present before a judgment is delivered in a criminal case.

The senior advocate said even if someone is holding a watching brief for the prosecuting counsel, the judgment could still be delivered.

But Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia insisted that she was more comfortable reading the judgment in Keyamo’s presence.

She stood the case down for 10 minutes to enable the lawyer from Keyamo’s chambers, Mr. Festus Afeiyodion, to confirm from his principal the day he would be available.

About an hour later, Afeiyodion told the judge that Keyamo requested for a short stand-down‎ to enable him come, as he was handling another matter elsewhere.

Politics / Julius Berger Speaks On President Buhari's Economic Agenda by THENATIONNEWS(m): 11:24am On Jun 18, 2015
The Managing Director of Julius Berger Plc, Mr. Detlev Lubasch, on Wednesday said because President Muhammadu Buhari‘s administration is yet to take shape, his economic agenda is difficult to predict.

Speaking at the 45th Annual General Meeting of the construction giant in Abuja, Lubasch lamented there has been an economic down turn in the country from the second half of 2014 to this year.

He called for a renewed focus on the nation’s economy, noting that the new administration will face challenges since key economic issues still continue.

He said: “There is an urgent need for renewed focus on the Nigerian economy. It is expected that the new administration will face some challenges, as key economic issues persist.

“But, there are positive indications for the future based on priorities communicated by President Buhari. As the President’s economic team has yet to take shape, it is difficult to predict his agenda for the economy.”

Lubasch said the time needed for the government to settle down shows no hope for rapid improvement.

He added: “With this expectation, the new administration has stated that no major actions can be realistically expected prior to the third quarter of 2015.

“Our forecast is that our strong order backlog will provide a steady revenue stream during the transition period, but that it will be difficult to maintain our level of performance in 2015, to that of the previous year.

“However, we will continue efforts to diversify our portfolio, to increase the proportion of private sector clients. Currently, public sector projects still represent 50 per cent of our business and large-scale infrastructure works remain a main competence.”

According to him, budgetary provisions for capital projects in 2015 are significantly lower than that of the previous year.

Politics / I Am Very Fit To Rule Nigeria by THENATIONNEWS(m): 11:15am On Jun 18, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday insisted that he is very fit to rule Nigeria. He was reacting in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, to media reports claiming that his age will limit him from properly ruling Nigeria. The statement said Buhari like a good wine gets better with age.
It reads: “On Monday evening, President Muhammadu Buhari spoke with the Nigerian community at the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa. Speaking extempore, because according to him, he wanted to “speak from the heart,” the President urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria, a country he went to the warfront to keep together.
“Still extolling the virtues of our country, Nigeria, the President, who had served as a military governor of the then North-Eastern State at 33 years old, declared:”I wish I became Head of State when I was a governor. Now at 72, there is a limit to what I can do.”
The above comments have been reported by some newspapers to mean that the President was saying he was too old to cope with the demands of his office. Far from it.
Buhari, the statement said, is coming on board with quantum of wisdom, patience, temperance and forbearance his age brings to make a difference in Nigeria.
