raumdeuter: Lol, did you forget I mentioned Puyol, Cannavaro, Desailly, Thuram, Ramos and VVD himself in WC and UCL matches? Why cherrypick on only the outlier when it does not alter the point being made? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 3:47pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: I've clarified that its Maldini not Nesta, same 1-0 game. The Man Utd game, they beat Liverpool 3-0 at old trafford. Google it. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 3:38pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: Ok your correction is noted. But note I made my point from my memory of seeing the match a long while ago and I recalled Milan's main defender snuffing out Madrid's attack time and time again. Obviously, it was Maldini not Nesta, my bad but my point still stands even if its Maldini that bossed Madrid. They played each other up to 3 times that season some of which included Nesta. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 3:32pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: Brazil played with considerable threat even with a half fit Ronaldo. They had other great players in their ranks. I didnt say Boateng did not defend well but Argentina's attack didnt really stretch him. Messi, Higuain and co were not in sync. It was not a masterclass from him. In fact what people mostly remember from that final are Higuain's misses, Gotze's winner and the overall dull attacking play. Many people dont even know Boayeng was MoM which is why I say that's not a stand out part of the game. If you mention Milan vs Man Utd 2007, one automatically remembers Gattuso's exploits. Same as Ramos vs Atletico and VVD vs Bayern. The Boateng performance vs Argentina does not have the same feel on the memory. |

raumdeuter: Milan won 1-0 at San Siro with Rui Costa assisting Shevy beautifully for the only goal. Nesta bullied all the galacticos, Ronaldo, Raul, Zidane and came out stainless. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 3:17pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: Argentina's attack put in a poor performance that match, especially higuain. There was no memorable defensive performance by any player in that final as both team's attack played below par. It was a case of we have to give someone the MoM and obviously from the winning team and since the attackers were not great, a defender gets it. A defensive masterclass in a WC final would be France's Desailly and Thuram against Brazil in France 98. They were exposed to real terrorists but dealt with them defensively in outstanding fashion. I repeat, Boateng has no high profile defensive masterclass known to man. 2 Likes |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 3:00pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: Strange, Boateng winning the MoM was due to lack of a stand out performer in both teams on that day. His saving grace was Higuain forgetting his shooting boots that match. I am talking of a memorable defensive masterclass, like: : Puyol vs Germany WC 2010 : Ramos vs Atletico UCL final : Gattuso vs Man Utd 2007 : Cannavaro vs Germany WC 2006 : Nesta vs Real Madrid 2003 group stage : Ferdinand vs Liverpool 2006 : VVD vs Bayern 2019 It's not like AC Milan with prime Nesta and Maldini were not conceding goals at all. But they always gave the team's attackers the confidence to go on and win when it mattered. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Champions Of Europe 2021 by ThierryJay: 2:32pm On Apr 07 |
raumdeuter: Chief I beg to differ. In fact let VVD be Pontius Pilate using others to cover up, as long as it makes his team concede less and win trophies, then he is not hype. He has simply mastered the art of defensive coordination. When his pointer wasnt working in 2022/2023 and he started being dribbled around frequently, Liverpool faltered massively. Now he has started to point again and Liverpool's getting the points as title favorites after winning yet another trophy. Is this a coincidence? All great defenders have their embarrassing low moments. You've mentioned VVD's but dont forget Torres destroying Vidic at Old trafford in 2007, Walcott embarrassing Maldini, Henry turning Nesta in ridiculous circles in Euro 2000 final, Ik Uche destroying Cannavaro and of course Boateng's several shitty moments with Messi, Suarez, Ronaldo etc Per VVD vs Boateng, no point (no pun intended). Kleberson, Edmilson them sef win World cup with Brazil in 2002 but you cannot even compare their defensive standing with Ferdinand, Thiago Silva & Vidic wey no get WC. Didnt VVD almost singlehandedly dump out Bayern and Boateng with a goal and assist in 2019 UCL, pls show me one high profile match where Boateng was the undisputed boss of the day either for Germany or Bayern. I'm truly waiting to learn. 2 Likes |

raumdeuter: You actually have a point which is that there've been great defenders known not to shy away from robust challenges. But there is something you are missing: Effectiveness. At the end of it all, the hallmark of a great defender is how well he's able to prevent opponents from scoring or creating dangerous situations. It is not necessary that all great defenders have to employ the same style so long as whatever style they adopt is effective. And it isn't a matter of argument that VVD was the EPL's most effective defender between 2018 - 2021. He had some 2-year downtime afterwards due to injury but has come back strongly since 2023 and the results for Liverpool are there for all to see. It doesn't matter that VVD avoids lunging into tackles while Vidic and Nesta are tackling warriors. At the end of the day, they are all elite defenders that have helped their teams challenge and win league and UCL titles. What more evidence do you require? No be only one road enter market. Btw, Boateng no dey VVD's level. 2 Likes 1 Share |

popizaino: Being in a very good player category is a spectrum. So one can be better than the other and still be in the same class. That said, Saka is above Palmer based on pedigree but not form. He has been putting in very good stats for the past 4 years while this is Cole's first year in the limelight. But is Saka world class? Not yet. He needs to demonstrate more consistent quality in the big games to enter that bracket. Is Palmer world class? Way too early to say so. For now, he's just a Kudus that takes more penalties. If he delivers this current level for the next 4-5 years, then he'll be WC. 2 Likes |

Seun: From the notice given to him, they are not demolishing the entire property but only 50metres of it. But whether the 50metre is from the waterfront or entrance, I'm not sure. Paul is a very sound businessman. I'm sure he'll pull through and probably make something better off from this saga. The 7 day notice is quite absurd though. I'm sure it wont fly. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

oliverano: Hmm I'll beg to differ on Jorginho. At best he was a very good player. A single stellar season does not make you world class. Even in the so-called stellar season, no one who watched Jorgi during the Chelsea UCL and Italy Euro campaign thought in real time that they were watching a potential world best player. It was more of an afterthought at season end that wait a minute, Jorginho is a common factor in both winning campaigns so he must be so, so and so. And after that season, he never truly won fans hearts with his displays both in club and country. For context, Victor Osimhen is not considered world class despite a stellar last season. David Beckham despite ending up on the world best podium on 2 occasions was considered not world-class by Fergie (though I disagree personally cos Beckham was one of the most impactful midfielders in the world between 98/99 to March 2002 when that Deportivo player broke his leg) but this is just to illustrate that just being very good doesnt automatically make you world class. To be world class is to show consistently high levels of quality both on the easy and toughest stages over a long time regardless of trophies (although they are an added advantage). This is why Harry Kane and Son are considered World class. We have world class talents from young ages though, like Owen, Rooney, Pato, Robinho, Bellingham, Neymar, Mbappe, Rice, Mikel Obi. Not all of them went on to seal their world class status though. Foden has world class talent, however time will tell whether he progresses this into a bona-fide world beater. Personally, I think he's almost there and by next season if he replicates this level, his world class status will not be in doubt. Saka is still not yet world class. Same as Palmer and Rodrygo. They are just very good players. |

Education / Re: Offhand Or Offhead Which Is Correct by ThierryJay: 10:34am On Apr 02 |
Nesman25: No it isnt. Check well the meaning in the shots you shared. Offhand means unplanned, to do something on-the-spot, without preparation. But usually when we Nigerians use offhand, we mean to do something by memory alone without looking at a book e.g to recite a song without looking at the lyrics. However, this is not the same as unplanned as you are already prepared in your mind to do it mostly after having read the subject. The correct term to use for saying something without reading from a book or phone is "by heart", it doesn't mean you didn't prepare for it. But if someone poses a question to you suddenly and you answer on the spot, then you have responded "offhand". 2 Likes 1 Share |
Politics / Re: What If Southsouth Does Not Give Southeast Sea Access If Nigeria Divide? by ThierryJay: 3:59pm On Mar 30 |
FatherOfJesus: If you are ignorant then it's limited to you. Not me or others who are already aware. Topography of regions has been available for ages. You are not aware of cartographic maps, remote sensing images and you cover your ignorance with a general assumption of ignorance. Below is the landscape of the Niger at Onitsha. It's obvious that it's a flat plain topography. Saying you don't need a gorge or deep valley to build a dam at an efficient cost is just ridiculous. It's like saying you don't need land to build a non-mobile house. Do you know the large scale of communities around Onitsha that would be wiped out by submersion from erecting a dam there? I see that you just want to argue and seems to repel any semblance of common sense. Please go ahead with your fallacies, at least I have put in a decent time of educating you. Won't reply again. 1 Like 1 Share

FatherOfJesus: The only rubbish here is your poor analytical displays. Hoover dam is practically built in between canyons which hold the dam wall tightly. Please tell me where you can find that kind of structure/topography on the Niger from Onitsha downwards. You are just picking up foreign examples without situating it within the context of River Niger's realities. 1 Like |
Politics / Re: What If Southsouth Does Not Give Southeast Sea Access If Nigeria Divide? by ThierryJay: 3:32pm On Mar 30 |
FatherOfJesus: It baffles me how you stubbornly ignored the technicalities of my comment just to appear correct. You said 3 gorges dam. I already said for there to be a dam, there has to be a gorgelike topography which is typically not found in the lower course of a river. It's a rarity that Yangzte river has gorges just 150km from its mouth. But the river Niger does not have that luxury, so.where would the dam be sited? If anything your post just proves me.right. You also failed to mention that the so called 3 gorges dam cost over 31billion usd as far back as 2005 which would be equivalent to more than 50billion usd in today's terms. Pray tell how you expect to expend way.more than Nigeria's entire reported reserves on a single dam. Does this make financial sense to you? 1 Like |
Politics / Re: What If Southsouth Does Not Give Southeast Sea Access If Nigeria Divide? by ThierryJay: 11:39am On Mar 30 |
FatherOfJesus: Sorry to jump in as I couldnt resist because this is a geographical issue. You are not getting the point of the person you quoted. It's almost impossible to dam a first class river near its mouth I.e at the delta where it's already kilometres wide and where the flood plain topography is not dam-friendly. All the examples you gave: Colorado, Aswani on the Nile are all dams at the upper or middle course where there are gorges that are conducive for damming. There has to be some sort of high ground on both sides of the river that will hold the dam. At the Onitsha point where it has almost reached the Atlantic and with the flat topography, damming the Niger will be ludicrous as the costs required (that's if its possible) will be unprecedented and economically senseless. 9 Likes 3 Shares |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Fc Barcelona Fan Thread: "més Que Un Club" by ThierryJay: 5:32pm On Mar 29 |
andrewbaba44: Yes but by not much. Kudus should be still be around 50-55m range. W-ham bought him for 42m and his stock hasn't exactly risen astronomically since. Okay we buy Nico, he flashes, disturbs and all that but final product lacking like a Doku at City, then it's the Dembouz PTSD era all over again. Okay maybe he's cheap, but what's the point if he isnt guaranteed to raise the team's overall effectiveness. At almost 22, if you ain't got it already, then it's difficult to be it. So why not go for a shorter term guaranteed effectiveness for say 2 years while we scout for the next Neymar? 1 Like |

andrewbaba44: Well, I admit his age makes him an attractive prospect. But I think players like Kudus, Son & even Trossard for lesser fees will produce better output. Leon Bailey is another option. Karim Adeyemi needs a confidence booster and a switch might do him good. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Fc Barcelona Fan Thread: "més Que Un Club" by ThierryJay: 10:53am On Mar 29 |
andrewbaba44: Andre I see your point, but how can he be anything different from Dembele at his best? I feel that at 22, a promising top player should have already gotten their acts together in terms of technique and impact. At 22 you could already see that players like Robben, Raul, Eto, Henry, XavIniesta, Fabregas, Mbappe, Suarez, Rooney, Owen, Aguero, or if we come below this level Vinicius, Pedri, Musiala, Saka, Foden, were already or going to be world beaters. All these 6 goals and 12 assists for an attacker wanting to go to Barca isnt really impressive to me which has exactly been my grouse with Barca's capture of Raphina. A top level winger should be posting not less than 25 - 30 G/A a season. At best, he can come in as a placeholder but I doubt he can mature into a worldbeater. Who knows I may be wrong though. |
