A Nigerian police officer, on Tuesday, in Ikorodu area of Lagos allegedly killed a student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure – FUTA – for disobeying the Lagos transport law. The victim, Kunle, aka Ifa, was hustling with the motorbike to make some money while waiting for the Nigerian government and university lecturers to settle an ongoing strike and call students back to campus. Nigerian university lecturers called for a strike since July to force the Nigerian government to honour an agreement it reached with the lecturers in 2009. The strike meant millions of Nigerian university students were forced to return home. The murder of Kunle sparked a brief protest in the community. Chima Onwe, former online editor at Channels Tv, was at the scene and tweeted the incident as it unfolded. www.m.news24.com/nigeria/National/News/Student-killed-by-police-officer-during-ongoing-ASUU-strike-20130821 |

Pastor Rodney Wills was just about to reach 4 years at Mt. Salem Baptist Church when the unusual happened. Reported by AmericaPreachers.com He is the youngest pastor to be installed at 26 years old and is now the shortest term pastor in Mt. Salem’s 109 year history. On Saturday, Mt. Salem voted him out for attending a local Rick Ross concert. With a vote of 11 to 3, the 14 deacons met at 11pm Saturday night to discuss and come to a conclusion that they did not need his services anymore. Rev. Wills arrived to the church the next day for Sunday morning worship service and notice his parking sign taken down and his name removed from the office door. The deacons even asked another minister from the community to officiate the service that morning. “We cannot have our leader supporting people of this world who are tearing down the kingdom of God.” said Deacon Miles Langley. According to Deacon Langley, this is not the first time Rev. Wills has attended a concert while pastoring Mt. Salem. 9 months ago the diaconate board met with Rev. Wills when word was given to them that many youth and young adults spotted the pastor at a Lil Wayne concert. “We know that many saints will have mixed opinions from our actions, but this is not how we do things here at Mt. Salem. We cannot have a pastor praising the world one minute then praising the Lord the next. Period” said Deacon Langley |

Military sources have waved off reports on the Sheikh Abubakar Shekau had been shot and deposed as leader of Islamist sect group, Boko Haram. According to the sources, the intention of the false report is to mislead both the government and members of the public. “It is not true,” a senior army officer said about the report. Also on Wednesday, the defence headquarters disclosed that the joint intelligence sharing and military cooperation between the Nigeria and Niger Republic has helped to foil the plan by some Boko Haram insurgents that escaped the onslaught by the troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), to regroup for counter-offensive. Meanwhile, Chairman, Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution on Security Challenges in the North (Amnesty Committee) and the minister of special duties, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has refused to speak on the purported overthrow of the Boko Haram boss. Turaki who recently announced a ceasefire deal with the sect had maintained that the Amnesty Committee is negotiating with “authentic” Boko Haram. Shekau had released a video to dismiss the reports of a ceasefire deal, but Turaki had said the committee negotiated the deal with Shekau’s deputy Sheikh Abdulazeez. Shekau had in the video released after the announcement of the ceasefire agreement, disowned Sheikh Abdulazeez. He said: “We are stating it categorically that we are not in any dialogue or ceasefire agreement with anyone. And we have never asked anybody in the name Abdulazeez to represent me, Abubakar Shekau, the leader of this movement. “I swear by Allah that Abdulazeez or whatever he calls himself did not get any authority from me to represent me in any capacity. I do not know him. And if we per adventure encounter Abulazeez and his group, I swear by Allah we are going to mete them with the grave judgment that Allah has prescribed for their likes in the holy book.” www.informationng.com/2013/08/boko-haram-leader-shekau-not-deposed-military-sources.html |

As the All Progressive Congress, APC, joins the league of political parties in Nigeria, former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has stated that the development will transform the nation’s political system which will become more vibrant, especially in the coming 2015 elections. Fielding questions from newsmen in his Hill Top Mansion, Minna Thursday, the former leader said that the floor is now left bare for the electorate to make their choice and ensure that their votes count in the 2015 general elections. His words, “With the emergence of the new party, (APC), we will now see a vibrant political activity and what is left for the electorate and the press is to ensure that the votes count and also allow the people to make their choice.” According to him, as an advocate and believer in two party system, the time has come for Nigerians to really shine their eyes and make the right choice for the forthcoming elections. “I have been and will continue to be a strong believer of two party system and like the PDP itself said on the emergence of the APC, it is a welcome development but that is not to say that other registered political parties are dead, but it is however clear that we now have two strong parties in the country,” he stressed. On what he foresees for the country in 2015, Gen. Babangida simply said, “I cannot predict the future and so I wait for God.” Adding his voice to the ongoing ASUU strike, IBB called on the federal government to find a lasting solution to the issue. “They do have national interest at heart, to be honest and fair to them, and I think they should not give up in negotiating with the government but as much as possible, they should also make the public understand the issue at stake,” he added. |
The World Bank is to provide $ 300m empowerment fund for youths in Akwa Ibom State and some parts of the country. The fund is aimed at developing farming and small-scale industries in all the beneficiary states. The Sector Leader, Human Development, World Bank, Prof. Foluso Okunmadewa, explained in a statement made available in Uyo on Thursday that the bank approved the $300m intervention fund for youth empowerment programme to fulfil a request by the Federal Ministry of Finance. Okunmadewa, who spoke with Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio during a courtesy visit, said, “Recently, The World Bank through the request of the Federal Ministry of Finance has approved a $300m intervention for youth empowerment. And I know youth empowerment is extremely important in your administration. I can tell you that based on the insistence of the Country Director of The World Bank, Akwa Ibom is one of the states expected to benefit from this.” Okunmadewa, who was accompanied by other World Bank officials, said they had mobilised Zonal Managers in- charge of Community Social Development Project (CSDP) from 26 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja for The World Bank/Joint CSDP Review Management meeting in Uyo. He added that there were many youths both in the rural areas and in Uyo that needed to be empowered. He said the World Bank was willing and ready to collaborate with Akwa Ibom State for youth empowerment. He commended the state government for partnering The World Bank, particularly in human development, health sector, and education. “I am here principally to appreciate your partnership with The World Bank, particularly in the area of human development. Human development activities of the World Bank clearly complement your transformation agenda that has been widely regarded as uncommon,” he noted. In his response, Akpabio thanked The World Bank for partnering the state on human capacity development. He advised the bank to focus their development attention on the state. He added, “There is a lot of problem at the shoreline of Akwa Ibom State. I am excited about the youth empowerment programme of The World Bank and our state would be very delighted to take part in it. Youths of the Niger Delta are so many and need to be empowered. “Our own is a little bit sad because this is a civil service state and we are trying to lay foundation for future industrialisation. “Other states are lucky to have industries, factories and all that. So, they have various means of employment but here we don’t have.” Akpabio instructed the Commissioner of Finance to immediately release the pending N300m counterpart funding to the bank to enable the state to benefit from other World Bank- assisted projects. He assured the bank of the continuous support of the people of the state and government in its effort to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians. |

5 Subjects Not Taught In School (But They Should Be) Education is way more than sitting in a classroom. Unfortunately, it is often the same old story. Go to school. Read, write, learn math, history, science, and the searing pain of social rejection. Go home. Forget everything you learned. While having a specific course for each of these ‘subjects’ might be a long way off for schools, integrating these into your existing classrooms need not be. And you never know – both students and teachers might find themselves a little more engaged. Long story short, these skills are learned inside and outside of schools – we get that – but they aren’t actual subject areas that you can focus on. In fact, the idea of trying to learn some real-world skills is what Modern Lessons should be all about. For instance, I think it won’t be a bad idea if subjects like GMAT and aptitude test skills can be included in the general studies being offered in our tertiary institutions. Would you say a 1st class graduate student of an art course, for example, is a failure because s/he couldn’t perform well in a GMAT aptitude test? Since aptitude tests have become basis for selecting candidates for job placement, it would make lots of sense to have them incorporated into our curriculum. 1.Film Making Making films is an excellent vehicle of self-expression. Not everyone is cut out for blogging or playing an instrument, and the world has more than enough bad poetry as it is. Films have become a part of our everyday lives, from big-budget blockbusters to amusing no- budget clips on YouTube. Teaching students to make more effective videos is not only good for keeping students interested in their lessons, for once, but it also means that there will be more high-quality content available in the future. The entire world will thank you for that. 2.Job Searching At around age 24, students will graduate from depending on other people to meet their needs, and be thrust out into the real world to fend for themselves. Some of them will delay entry into the work force by obtaining further certification, but the end result is the same – they need to be able to find a job. Rather than allowing hordes of students to list their Playstation high scores on their resumes and wear pyjamas to their job interviews, it would be in everyone’s best interest if students learned the ins and outs of convincing someone to hire you while still at school. 3.Money Management Yes, math is taught in schools. No, that kind of math isn’t doing anyone any practical good. You will never need to do coordinate geometry while paying your taxes, and you’ll never have to work with radians at the grocery store. Unless kids are fortunate enough to have been brought up in a rare household that isn’t bad at literally everything pertaining to money, they’re going to have a rough time once they’ve been cast out of the academic womb. What percentage of their monthly budget should go to rent? For kids who’ve never faced greater financial responsibility than paying for their own video games, these are the great mysteries of life – and they shouldn’t have to be. 4.Social Skills Despite popular belief, people are not born with perfect social skills; they learn them. Some children are graced with interactive families and plenty of cheek-pinching relatives to teach them good manners early on. Other children are allowed to spend most of their time alone, slowly reverting to their evolutionary roots. Even the most well-adjusted child is going to have some tricky situations to deal with in life. How do you cope with a co-worker who steals credit for your ideas? What are you supposed to do when you want to break off a relationship with someone who hasn’t really done anything wrong? How do you deal with a roommate who won’t pay his share of the rent on time and keeps getting into trouble? A few classes on social skills could really help students to navigate these unavoidable situations. 5.Practical Mechanics From oil changes to shattered iDevice screens, there are plenty of quick fixes in life that you should know how to do yourself. Sure, a computer technician will always be there, happily taking your Naira notes in exchange for running a can of compressed air over your computer fan and evicting the family of mice living underneath the motherboard, but you can save a lot of time and money by doing it yourself. Everything you buy will break at some point, and many people don’t have the skills needed to un-break them. |
The National Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Tijani Tumsah, said the party would fight corruption with a view to eliminating it from the polity. Tumsah made the promise during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Thursday. He said the transformation of the country could not be realised without an uncompromised decision to eradicate corruption. The national secretary said the APC had the required human resource to take Nigeria to a greater height. “APC has the human resource to turn Nigeria’s economy around through provision of regular power supply, creation of jobs, promotion of investment and industrialisation.” According to him, APC is going to put the country back on track for effective utilisation of resources. Tumsah, who decried insecurity and level of poverty in the country, said the party was determined to put smiles on the faces of the downtrodden. He called on Nigerians to support the party’s programmes for a united and prosperous country. He said there was no other country Nigerians could call their own hence the need for collective responsibility to transform it Tumsah commended INEC for living up to its responsibilities by registering APC, and promised that the party would abide by the Electoral Act. Former Gov. Of Lagos state Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the People's Democratic party, PDP is in trouble following the registration of an opposition party, Alliance For Progressive Change APC by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, on Wed. Tinubu opined that the development signals the commencement of a new phase in the struggle to bring the democratic change to Nigeria. He commended the decision of the INEC to register the merged parties saying they deserve a pat on the back. Nigeria must give INEC a pat on the back for complying with the law of the Land. What INEC has done is to follow the Constitution and the Electoral act to the Letter. We hope INEC will continue in this spirit and respect for the rule of law in all its future operations he said. He therefore added that the ruling party is in for trouble at all levels during the 2015 elections as the APC will give a big fight. In his speech Tinubu said " I congratulate millions of Nigerans who stood by us during the long process to form the APC Party and actualise its objectives. This registration is a culmunation of concerted and diverse efforts and commitement by our people to work for a new Nigeria. With APC , a new Nigeria is necessary and is possible. I also want to congratulate INEC and the Leadership of INEC headed by Prof. Jega and the entire institution for this positive pronouncement. www.globalvillageextra.com/PDP-Is-In-Trouble--Tinubu.html |
