Some years ago, a British filmmaker discovered an exotic site in Nigeria: An entire community of human beings subsisting on mountains of refuse.

And not in some remote state, but in Lagos, the country's commercial nerve centre - a city of fast cars, luxury shops and sleek folk, with women in Brazilian hair weaves and men in Ferragamo shoes.

Shortly after the Welcome to Lagos series aired on the BBC in April 2010, Nigerians around the world went berserk.

The third Warrior Class strike craft to be refitted as an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) – SAS Makhanda – is en route to the Mozambique Channel for Operation Copper counter-piracy duties.

Prior to becoming an OPV, her condition had deteriorated to such an extent she could not make own passage from Simon’s town to SA Shipyards in Durban and was towed to the east coast port for repair and refurbishment work.

The former SAS Magnus Malan completed harbour and sea acceptance trials in Durban before setting course for her home port last month. She was first spotted in the Simon’s town area on June 29 and was seen in the bay less than a week later sporting her 76 mm forward gun.

Denel Dynamics is continuing with flight testing of its Seeker 400 and Hungwe military and civil unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) ahead of serial production.

The Seeker 400 first flew at the Alkantpan test range in the Northern Cape in February. The smaller civilian Hungwe also flew at the same time. The flights come ahead of production starting later this year - Denel Dynamics is executing a production contract for the Seeker 400’s launch customer.

It has an endurance of 16 hours, a ceiling of 18 000 feet and a cruising speed is 150 km/h. Denel Dynamics says it is inaudible at altitudes higher than 3 000 feet above the ground and invisible to someone on the ground when flying at typical operating altitudes of between 4 500 and 9 000 feet.

The Seeker 400 can carry 100 kg and this can include two payloads at the same time, including electro-optical/infrared and radar as well as a laser rangefinder and illuminator for target designation. Denel says an electronic surveillance payload is available for the detection and location of radar emitters. Future upgrades will include satellite communications, and sense-and-avoid capability in order to obtain civil aviation certification.

Currently, the Seeker 400 has a range of 250 km, but it could be upgraded to use satellite communications, which would allow it to operate at much greater ranges. With the use of the existing tactical ground station (TGS), the range may be extended to 750 km.

WHEN Islamist militants raided the northeastern Nigerian village of Izghe, killing 90 people, some government troops dropped their weapons, stripped off uniforms and fled in civilian clothes, said two soldiers at the scene.

The soldiers said the troops were angry their monthly pay had been cut in half to 15,000 naira ($92) without explanation, heightening their belief that money meant for them and their frontline fight against Islamist militant group Boko Haram was being siphoned off by officials in Abuja.

At least 26 people were killed when suspected Islamist Boko Haram militants stormed a village in northeast Nigeria and a government warplane opened fire to repel the attackers, local residents and a security source said on Tuesday.

The aircraft strafed Boko Haram fighters fleeing in pick-up trucks after raiding Dille, near Lassa in the south of Borno State, for several hours on Monday. The attackers fired on inhabitants and burned homes and churches.

"I counted 26 corpses yesterday (Monday) evening," one of the residents, Dauda Illiya, said.

Most of the deaths occurred during the raid but cannon fire from the government jet also killed at least six civilians — four women and two children — residents said.

"The pilot was just spraying bullets anywhere, people were running here and there. Many people were injured from the bullets," said a local man, Suleiman Haruna.
