A former Head of State, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has scored the Nigerian Army low in the fight against the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, in North-East Nigeria.
Buhari, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, said there had been series of complaints that soldiers collect bribes at check-point and rape women during operations.

He spoke on the Hausa service of the Voice of America, monitored in Kaduna on Wednesday.

Which is why Malo, a corporal in a Nigerian mobile police unit, and his fellow officers were glad to see a convoy of reinforcements unexpectedly show up where their patrol was resting earlier this month, near the border village of Gamboru.

Then the reinforcements, which included army-issue armored cars and heavy-caliber weaponry, began shouting ”Allahu Akbar!” and opened fire; 13 police officers were killed in the ambush, Malo told VOA in an exclusive interview.

Their bodies rotted in the hot sun for three days. The bogus reinforcements, he said, were Boko Haram militants.

Nigeria would be engaged in multipartite civil war like it happened in Lebanon in 1975 and Somalia in 1991 before its final disintegration in 2030, a report by the United States military experts released by the Centre for Strategy and Technology, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama has said.

The report written by five US military scholars and entitled “Failed State 2030: Nigeria - A case study” and dated February 2011, is one of the many periodic scenario building analysis undertaken by the US military think tanks on the future of countries within the sphere of economic interests of the US.

One of such simulated security dissertation on Nigeria was released during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo by the US National Intelligence Council, where the US intelligence experts predicted Nigeria’s collapse in 2015.

In the 156 page latest report, the US Air Force officers posit that “Nigeria’s lack of unifying national identity, history of corrupt governance, religious and cultural schisms, and shifting demographics may cause the state, over time, to break apart.”

In the case of Nigeria in 2030, the experts believed that Nigeria’s “history of tribal and religious conflicts, endemic corruption at all levels of government, poor national planning, uneven development, social disorder, rampant criminality, violent insurgency, and terminal weak governance provides an environment that could portend imminent collapse and failure.”

A professional Army that is properly trained, funded and provided the right weapons offers a strong defense for a country in the time of military conflict. Just having this army makes other countries that are considering invading think twice and consider if they are going to win the war or lose a large number of soldiers and cost themselves a lot of time, money and reputation. Having an army for defensive purposes also allows a country to mobilize and help another country in times of military conflict, as these soldiers can also be used to fight other wars in different places around the world.

A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission has crashed, the Defence Headquaters has said.
The helicopter crashed Monday afternoon due to technical fault at a location South of Bama, Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES.
The statement did not say whether anyone was killed or injured in the crash.
Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances leading to the accident.

The military plays down its loss of Damboa, saying it will not concede any part of Nigeria to any insurgent group.
The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Chris Olukolade, on Monday said the Nigerian military was preparing to embark on actions that would enable it to regain the Damboa area of Borno State, which it lost to the extremist Boko Haram sect.
Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, also said the military would soon reverse the current “insecurity manifestations” in the area.
Mr. Olukolade was reacting to questions raised by journalists concerning reports that members of the Boko Haram sect had taken over Damboa and even hoisted the flag of their organisation after dislodging the military and killed scores of civilian residents.

No conventional warfare was ever fought by Nigeria accept an internal civil war of Biafra.
Nigerian airforce has never fired a missile in anger against another plane.
Nigeria only establish a special forces capability about two years ago and still lacks a lot.
Nigeria only fought in Liberia and Sierra Leone against a rag tag bandit armies.

Nigeria has the highest number of citizens without electricity in Africa, a new report has revealed. Africa has 55 countries/nations recognised by the United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU).
The report, a joint venture by sustainable energy charity Ashden, also shows that Nigeria has about 10 per cent of the total 1.3 billion people in Africa who are without electricity.
The report revealed how donors, investors, technical experts and policy makers can improve support to enterprises providing access to clean energy in the developing world.
“Some 1.3 billion people live without electricity, while nearly three billion people cook on open fires or inefficient cook stoves, damaging health and keeping people trapped in poverty,” the report says.
Just recently, Minister of Power, Professor Chinedu Nebo, said that 120 million Nigerians, representing 60 per cent of the 170 million populations, are yet to be connected to the national grid.

Over 112 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation in Nigeria, two thirds of the population.
