Religion / Cardinal Onaiyekan Now A 'prince Of The Catholic Church'. by Thok(m): 6:22am On Nov 25, 2012
Nigeria's Onaiyekan now a prince of Catholic Church
Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday officially named Nigeria’s Archbishop John Onaiyekan and five other non-European cardinals to the body that will elect his successor, saying the move underlined the Church’s diversity.
The 85-year-old pontiff presided over the ceremony in St Peter’s Basilica that elevated the six prelates to the Catholic Church’s College of Cardinals.
The body “presents a variety of faces, because it expresses the face of the universal Church,” he said in a development that has been welcomed by critics concerned that the college has become increasingly Euro-centric under Benedict.
The Pope puts a biretta haton Onaiyekan as part of induction of cardinals in Rome “In this consistory, I want to highlight … that the Church is the Church of all peoples,” he said during the ceremony during whichthe new “princes of the Church” received scarlet redbirettas and gold rings.
The new cardinals come from Colombia, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, the Philippines and the United States and join the elite body that advises the popeand elects his successor upon his death.
Onaiyekan being congratulated after the ceremony They are American James Michael Harvey, Lebanon’s Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, India’s Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal, John Onaiyekan of Nigeria, Colombian Ruben Salazar Gomez and Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines.
Announcing the names of the new cardinals last month, Benedict told bishops that he wanted to show that “the Church belongs to all peoples, speaks all languages.”
During the last consistory held in February, 16 of the 22 new cardinals named were from Europe.
Saturday’s consistory follows the death of several cardinals in recent months and will bring the number of those eligible tovote back up to the maximum of 120.
Cardinals must be under 80years old to take part in a papal election although they can stay on as non-voting cardinals after they reach that threshold.
There are now 62 European cardinals eligible to vote compared with 67 in February, as well as 14 North Americans, 21 South Americans, 11 Africans and 11 Asians.
Harvey, 63, who hails from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been the prefect of the pontifical household since 1998. The best known of the new cardinals has beenmade the archpriest of the Basilica of St Paul’s Outside the Walls, one of Rome’s most prominent basilicas.
Another of the new cardinals, Manila Archbishop Tagle, at age 55is viewed as a possible candidate to succeed Benedict.
The last to receive his biretta on Saturday, Tagle was visibly moved, wiping away tears after a long tete-a-tete with the pope, to applause from the congregants.
Rahi, 72, became the second Maronite cardinal alongside Monsignor Nasrallah Sfeir, also of Lebanon. Rahi has frequently warned over therise of Islamism, and his elevation is seen as a gesture towards a multi-faith Lebanon at a time when the country is threatened by the conflict in neighbouring Syria.
Trivandrum Archbishop Thottunkal of India becamethe youngest member of the College of Cardinals at age 53. His elevation was seen as a bid to encourage India’s old but dynamic Church, little known in the West.
As for the 68-year-old Onaiyekan of Nigeria, archbishop of Abuja, he is another “papabile”, or potential pope, who has shown courage in the face of inter-faith hatred at a time when his country faces attacks against Christians by the Islamist sect Boko Haram.
Another man of peace is 70-year-old Gomez of Bogota, who has fought tirelessly for national reconciliation with Colombia’s FARC rebels.

Family / Dutch Arranging Fake Weddings For Nigerians Jailed. by Thok(m): 6:11am On Nov 25, 2012
Dutch arranging fake weddings for Nigerians jailed.
A 45-year-old Dutch woman has been jailed for four years for organising nine sham marriages, involving Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.
Diana Olivieira: jailed
Diana Olivieira flew the brides over from Holland tothe North West for the ceremonies.
They all married Nigerians so that they and their partners could take up residency in the UK.
She was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to facilitate non EU persons into the UK.
Olivieira was arrested at her home address in Rotterdam and brought to the UK on 25 July.
Investigations by the UK Border Agency found she travelled from Holland to the UK several times with her clients.
Flights were arranged for Dutch nationals to visit the UK for short periods.
As people from the Netherlands are entitled to live and work in the UK, while here their spouses applied for documents and National Insurance numbers.
After they married, the Nigerians applied for European Economic Area (EEA) residency status as spouses of EEA nationals.
Dave Magrath, from the UK Border Agency, said: “The sentence handed to Olivieira sends out a clear message that we will not tolerate abuse of our immigration system.”
Six of the grooms and some of their partners have been prosecuted and received jail sentences totalling 17 years.
Culled from BBC.

jeffizy: Dirty fight begets dirty tactics.
Though it inhuman to kill an unarmed man without trial, but I don't know why I'm not sympathetic to those killed. Facts remains that the indigenes habour Boko boys in their neighbourhood.
Simple. Come to think of it,when the army needs info on the whereabouts of boko boys,dy keep mum. But when shoot outs occur, they all cry murder. Though i dont support brutality and extrajudicial killings, what do u xpect the army to do when the people they are meant to defend are not helping?.

Before we choose to call the dog a bad name just to hang it.. How sure are you they were civilians and unarmed?..
From the footage, there lie corpses, scattered over the road, which indicates there was a gun shoot out with many casualties..
Who the heck videoed it, was it a soldier or civilian?. If a soldier, y wasn't he sanctioned, and if a civilian, y wasn't he shot?.. I dont support extra judicial killings, but lets think 2ce before we conclude.
