Peter Bang the son of a successful Danish businessman, had shown interest in radio technology form his early days. He graduated as an engineer and spent some months working in a radio factory. He later teamed up with his friend Svend Olufsen to create Bang & Olufsen in 1925. Setting up shop in an attic, the Danish company’s first significant product was a radio that worked with alternating current, in a time when most were battery powered. Bang was in charge of the technology, while Olufsen dealt with the business side of the company.
Both men spent about a few years researching and working with architects, designers and engineers to offer sleek, beautiful and handsome designs for devices as long as they were functional. And in 1967 the company created the BeoLab 5000, designed by Jacob Jensen. This turned out to be one of the first true high fidelity units ever created by Bang & Olufsen, the BeoLab 5000 amplifier introduced no hiss or hum and reproduced all its frequencies exactly as received. The distortion free amplifier offered qualities never seen before and the design was equally sensational, the BeoLab 5000 became a success and won the IF award in the Hanover fair of 1967.
Bang & Olufsen has changed the way we see music by bringing the music out into the open, and really allowing you see your music as it plays with the BeoSound 9000. Designed by David Lewis, the BeoSound 9000 represents the latest technology from Bang & Olufsen with its 6-CD changer being the fastest in the world. It’s got a glass door which allows the six CDs presented in a row to be visible and a backlit acrylic plate that illuminates the CD currently playing, a first of its kind. The BeoSound 9000 CD Player offers ingenious engineering solutions for unprecedented flexibility, regardless of its placement either vertically, horizontally, upright or flat. This it achieved through the use of a digital time control, that constantly monitors the movement of the cover and adjusts the motor.
Armed with two sliding doors that are cut from the same piece of aluminium, the BeoCenter 2 proved to be a bit of a challenge for the Danish company. Also designed by David Lewis, the BeoCenter 2 is a versatile and integrated audio and video system. It gives easy access to CD audio, AM/FM radio and DVD video with a philosophy to providing a physically compact and total integration of pictures and sound system in one device.
