Politics / Oba Of Lagos Clarifies Allegations Of Threat To Igbos - Full Text Statement by thundey95(m): 6:16pm On Apr 07, 2015
The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has clarified statements of threat credited to him against the Igbos living in Lagos.

In a statement by the Opeluwa of Lagos, Chief Lateef Aderibigbe Ajose, the Oba of Lagos explained the context in which he made the statements, restating his commitment to ensuring the peaceful coexistence of all Lagosians irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion.

There have been reports in the media that Igbo leaders in Lagos paid the Oba a visit on Sunday April 5 and during the meeting they were told to vote for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Akinwumi Ambode, or else they will die in the lagoon.

He was alleged to have been angered by the votes garnered in Lagos by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan, which is believed to have been from the Igbo community.

Full Text of the Statement:

The Palace Makes Further Clarification On The Statement By The Oba Of Lagos

‎My attention has been drawn to a publication in a national newspaper, where HRM Oba Rilwanu Akiolu was alleged to have threatened Igbos in Lagos to make them vote for Ambode.

Last Sunday, all honorary Eze Ndigbos in Lagos paid a courtesy call to HRM Oba Akiolu. At the meeting the visitors praised the Oba for his fatherly support for and cooperation with Igbos in Lagos. They assured him of their continued good neighbourliness with other tribes in Lagos and support everything that will further strengthen that harmony.

Oba Akiolu on his part acknowledged the enviable performance of Governor Fashola and his contribution to the growth of investments in Lagos. He gave the assurance that he was not disturbed or angry with South-East and South- South votes for President Jonathan as perceived by the Eze Ndigbos. The Oba thereafter called on the Igbo chiefs to show appreciation to Lagos State by supporting his candidate Mr Ambode for continuity of excellence, as they have earlier promised.

He assured them of his continued support‎ and assistance where needed and the meeting ended with the traditional breaking of kola nuts, alligator pepper, and bitter kola and pouring of liberation on the ground. It was within this context that the tradition of Lagos with regard to the lagoon came up. It was noted that ‘whoever works against the throne and the interest and peaceful co-existence of Lagos would end up in the lagoon as per tradition’.

Oba Akiolu stated further that the Igbo people have not betrayed the throne. Lagos has also not betrayed the Igbo people. Lagos has done so much to make the Igbos comfortable and to prosper. For this, we expect reciprocal respect and understanding. The Oba of Lagos prays that the Lagoon and the throne will continue to bless and protect all those who reside and visit Lagos.

Oba Akiolu is the father of all irrespective of tribe, religion or political persuasion. In Lagos, we have an old traditional proverb that relates to the Lagoon. The Lagoon is unique to Lagos. The proverb stresses the need for unity and understanding when you do business in an environment and in this case when you live and do business in Lagos.

Oba Akiolu prays for peace for the land of Lagos and prosperity for all its inhabitants.

Business / Fedex To Buy Rival TNT Express For €4.4bn by thundey95(m): 5:36pm On Apr 07, 2015
US parcels delivery firm FedEx is to buy its Dutch rival TNT Express for €4.4bn ($4.8bn; £3.2bn) as it looks to expand its European operations.

In a joint statement, the companies said both management boards had reached a "conditional agreement".

FedEx has offered shareholders €8 per share, a 33% premium on TNT's closing share price on 2 April.

It comes two years after United Parcel Service (UPS) pulled out of a €5.2bn bid for the Dutch firm.

UPS pulled out of the deal following opposition from EU competition authorities, saying it saw "no realistic prospect" of approval for its bid from the European Commission.

Since then TNT has undertaken a restructuring programme, cutting costs, selling operations and investing heavily in its road network to hold on to customers in what has been a weak European market for business package deliveries.

FedEx and TNT Express expect the deal to be completed in the first half of next year and say they are confident any European competition concerns can be overcome this time.

The European regional headquarters of the combined companies will remain in the Netherlands, while FedEx has promised to maintain the TNT Express brand "for an appropriate period".

Tex Gunning, chief executive of TNT Express, said: "This offer comes at a time of important transformations within TNT Express and we were fully geared to executing our stand-alone strategy.

"But while we did not solicit an acquisition, we truly believe that FedEx's proposal, both from a financial and a non-financial view, is good news for all stakeholders."

However, the terms of the takeover allow for a competitor to make an offer within the next eight weeks and for the current deal to be terminated if that offer exceeds the existing proposal by 8%.

TNT warned in February that it expected adverse trading conditions to continue in its main western European markets this year, as it reported a €196m annual loss on revenues which fell 3.2% to €6.6bn.
Significant rival

On a conference call for analysts, Fedex chief financial officer Alan Graf said he did not expect "significant" redundancies following the purchase of TNT.

Mr Graf said Fedex would invest "aggressively" in integrating the two firms and added that Fedex was "very confident" of winning regulatory approval.

Steven Gibson of SLG Economics told BBC World News that if Fedex successfully bought TNT, it would create a European rival to UPS and DHL, which have a "bit of a duopoly".

Mr Gibson said the combined company of Fedex and TNT would have about 17-18% of the market.

"That is below the threshold of about 30% that European regulators would normally use. However, there will be a pressure on TNT to sell off some of its airline operations," he added.

Fedex shares were 3.7% higher to $172.82 in early trade on the New York Stock Exchange, while TNT shares were up about 30% in Europe.

Romance / 5 Most Annoying Habits Of Men by thundey95(m): 11:21am On Apr 06, 2015
Nowadays many women waste time dreaming about a knight in shining armor. They cannot realize that even knights are mere men who’re full of advantages and disadvantages. I’ve done my own research for all women to understand that almost all men have the same annoying habits. If you think that you can easily reeducate and change your man, then you’re seriously mistaken. You can surf the Internet for hours, looking for effective ways to make your man get rid of these habits. I advise you to accept this fact, because indifference, carelessness and simple manner of life are significant parts of men’s nature.

But it doesn’t mean that women should give in and refuse to stand their ground. I think constant rivalry between men and women keeps the spark alive in their relationships. Wise women know that sometimes it’s necessary to close eyes to their husbands’ bad habits. If you find the bad habits of your man extremely annoying, you should try to solve this problem together. By all means, avoid criticism and blame, if you really love and respect your significant other. It will help you reach harmony and mutual understanding in your relationship. If nothing works, you can change your attitude towards the problem and try not to get annoyed at everything. Happy relationship requires a lot of patience and wisdom. Read on the article and try to admit that there’s no perfection in this world.
1. Playing video games

I don’t know why but nowadays many men behave like teenagers. The statistics prove that men play video games too frequently. It steals their free time and makes the whole family suffer from the father’s video game addiction. I’ve already tried dating a gamer. I can state with assurance that dating a gamer is not a good idea at all. It seems to me that these people are living in a virtual reality and notice nothing except video games.

Have you ever thought of why do men prefer to play video games after a hard day at work? My ex once told me that his favorite video game was a perfect stress reliever for him. Unfortunately, many men can’t realize that they’re too old for video games. If you want to help your man get rid of this problematic habit, you should do your best to distract him from his high-tech surroundings. You can motivate him to go in for sports together or shift focus on other interesting activities.

2. Hiding their inner feelings and emotions

Unlike women, men find it difficult to open up and express their feelings and emotions. They’ll never pour out their soul or weep on somebody’s shoulder, because it’s not their pair of shoes. Unfortunately, they regard excessive emotionality as the biggest weakness of a real man. They also believe that secretiveness is the best way to avoid problems and protect themselves from evil-wishers. This habit is very annoying, because women often cannot understand what has happened to their significant others.

It’s been scientifically proved that women live a longer life, because they cannot keep both positive and negative emotions to themselves, like men usually do. Try to explain your man that unexpressed emotions can have a negative impact on his mental and physical well-being. It’s desirable to express inner feelings and open up together.
3. They think that women are the worst drivers

Unfortunately almost every man believes that a woman behind the wheel is dangerous. When I ask my boyfriend why all men do think so, he says that even scientists have already proved that a woman behind the wheel is a public danger. I do completely disagree with this statement. This stereotype is an outrageously offensive thing. I think both men and women have equal chances to become good drivers. I hate it when men try to prove that women are more likely to get into car accidents than men. Women can prevent car accidents even if they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. I advise every woman to improve her driving skills in order to tweak the nose of her significant other and prove that women can be experienced drivers as well.
4. Wearing the same clothes every day

No matter how you slice it, men are strange and complicated creatures. I must confess that shopping is not their passion. Men don’t hasten to renew their wardrobes, because they think that one pair of sneakers, two pairs of jeans and a few T-shirts are absolutely enough to look great. As a result women have to put a lot of effort to persuade dear men that it’s desirable to buy more clothes. This annoying habit significantly complicates the life of women, because they often can do nothing about this fact. The only way out is to buy your significant other some beautiful clothing. This hint can give your man a push to create and develop his own dress style.
5. Excessive forgetfulness

This one is the last most annoying habit of men. The study proves that many men suffer from excessive forgetfulness. It seems men are sometimes flying somewhere in the sky. They often forget birthdays or anniversaries. It’s strange, but they can’t keep in mind all little things that women find extremely important. The habit of selective hearing makes them forget everything they’re not directly interested in. Women should also know that many other factors can have a negative influence on the men’s memory. Depression, stress and anxiety make it harder to concentrate and deal with huge amounts of information. Wise women advise to give a delicate hint or tell your man in advance that something important is going to happen soon. Women should understand that men’s forgetfulness is not the sign of indifference, but the part of their nature.

I hope this article will help you realize that these annoying habits are peculiar to all men. If you’re already sick and tired of these habits, you should once and for all decide, whether you want to break up or continue fighting for your love. Building a happy relationship is a challenging thing. Sometimes only a mutual desire to reach a compromise can handle the situation. I believe that men can overcome everything for the sake of love. What other annoying habits of men do you know? Share your point of view!

Politics / Three INEC Staff Killed In Benue by thundey95(m): 5:56am On Mar 30, 2015
» Abia Governor, T.A Orji MAKURDI—Three adhoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Benue State were reported to have died, in the course of election duties in the state. The Resident Commissioner of INEC in the state, Prof. Istfanus Dafwang, made this known yesterday while briefing reporters at the state headquarters of INEC in Makurdi.

Prof. Dafwang said the commission also recorded the destruction of its materials at an unnamed location in Guma local government area of the state. He said amongst the dead was a female ad-hoc staff who died on Saturday morning in an accident at Oju local government area, while on her way to her duty post.

“She was being taken by a motorcycle rider to her unit and he was probably over-speeding when the front of the bike apparently pulled off leading to the gahstly accident that claimed her life.

“The other two died Sunday morning in an accident on their way back to Makurdi from Vandeikya where they took part in the conduct of the elections,” he said. Prof. Dafwang, who acknowledged that the exercise went on peacefully across the state, however, called for prayers to ensure that the coming governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections went without hitches.

At the time of this report, collation of results were still ongoing at Makurdi INEC office.
