Science/Technology / Obama Wants $19 Billion To Stop Hackers by timigate(m): 7:53am On Feb 10, 2016
According to Cnet, President Obama wants the US to spend $19 billion across a broad range of initiatives, all with the aim of making it harder for hackers to steal information from individuals, companies and government agencies. That's a 35 percent increase over the previous year's budget.
That money, for example, would promote stronger security measures for finance and other online accounts, reduce the government's reliance on Social Security numbers to ID citizens, recruit cybersecurity experts to hunt for intruders and test for weaknesses, and forgive student loans for experts joining the federal workforce. It would also help overhaul the government's aging computer systems.
The proposed budget, sent to Congress on Tuesday, highlights the government's failure to stave off attacks from professional hackers. Last year, for example, the US Office of Personnel Management revealed hackers grabbed the personal records of more than 21 million federal workers, including the Social Security numbers, fingerprint images, and histories of substance abuse and mental illness of federal job applicants and their family members. In December, officials discovered hackers working for a foreign government had installed a backdoor on computing gear from Juniper Networks that let them spy for three years on encrypted communications of US agencies and private companies. In 2014, a cyberattack exposed the personal information of about 800,000 workers for the US Postal Service.

Phones / Opera Max Now Faster, secure And Saves Data by timigate(m): 10:49am On Feb 04, 2016
For those looking to get full control of their data usage or maximize their browsing speeds, the new Opera Max is a one-stop shop. Opera today announced that an update to the app includes their latest “Opera Turbo” technology, a much more sophisticated method of proxying data for browsers and apps. This means that Opera Max just got much faster and much more secure.

Opera Max optimizes streaming content so that you can play music or video without hiccups, even on the faintest wi-fi network. However, security is always a concern on public networks, so the Opera team has been hard at work figuring out how to make the data you stream through Opera Max more secure. The solution is in the implementation of VPN connections: SPDY SSL rather than HTTP 1.1. SSL encryption makes keeps the communication between your smartphone and Opera Max’s servers secure, keeping your mind at rest when using public wi-fi networks.

Fast forward 10 months to now and the world’s most popular messaging service has just announced it has one billion monthly active users. Can you believe that? Installed is one thing but 1billion active monthly users is just insanely awesome! If you are yet to sign up to WhatsApp I wonder what you are waiting for.

Computers / Microsoft To Store Data Under Water by timigate(m): 12:52pm On Feb 02, 2016
Technology giant, Microsoft, has spent four months under the sea experimenting the new underwater data storage system. Redmond's experimental Project Natick subsea data centre suggests that the future of information storage could be under the ocean.
"Project Natick seeks to understand the benefits and difficulties in deploying subsea data centres," Redmond's website said. "We did so by designing, building, and deploying our own subsea centre in the ocean, all in about a year."
The project was launched in August 2014 and became operational a year later when the Leona Philpot vessel was christened and deployed about a half mile off the coast of California. Named after a character in Microsoft's Halo game franchise, the prototype ran underwater from August to November.
"Project Natick reflects Microsoft's ongoing quest for cloud data center solutions that offer rapid provisioning, lower costs, high responsiveness, and are more environmentally sustainable," the program's FAQ said.
The cloud-based program aims to help better serve customers in areas near large bodies of water—where nearly 50 percent of the world's population resides, according to Redmond.
"The vision of operating containerized data centres offshore near major population centres anticipates a highly interactive future requiring data resources located close to users," the site said. "Deepwater deployment offers ready access to cooling, renewable power sources, and a controlled environment."
The data centres will be made from recycled materials, which can be reused once the device reaches the end of its life—up to 20 years. In the meantime, the vessel will be retrieved, reloaded with new computers, and redeployed every five years.

Computers / 5 Best Isps In Port Harcourt by timigate(m): 4:01pm On Feb 01, 2016
With my years of industry-proven experience in the networking industry, I have found out that most users dont know what to expect from their ISPs. This has been a major reason why most companies end up with below average ISPs. Today, we will look at five best ISPs in Port Harcourt.
5. MTN
I put MTN at number five because it is available for corporate and home users, service is available in most part of Port Harcourt, the cost of subscription is cheaper when compared to Glo. The down side to using MTN is that the cost of equipment is high, the uptime is low when compared to the 96% acceptable uptime, and the support is poor. You have a problem on their link, it takes a whole day for them to send a support engineer. This is because the management of MTN BTS has been contracted to a third body company. So you call MTN and MTN call a third party company before you get your needed support.
4. Coollink
Coollink comes in at number four for me and the reasons are obvious; equipment cost is cheap, subscription cost is cheap, links are on microwave point-to-point which reduces the possibility of interference, and if you find yourself in remote areas, dont worry, coollink has got you covered through their V-SAT service from Yaclick. The down side is that the coverage is in few places, the radio is ubiquiti, which provides fewer channels and increases the chances of interference, support is not good enough as the company operates from an office that is outside Port Harcourt and if you are going for V-SAT, cost of equipments is on the high side.
3.Glo
If you are looking for a broadband internet for corporate use, and you have got the money, then glo is the internet of choice. With fibre and microwave options, glo has got you covered. The services are available almost everywhere and the available is sure up to if not above 96% uptime. During downtimes, glo constantly keeps you in the loop through globusiness. The down side to using glo is that the cost of subscription is on the high side and so is the cost of equipments.
2. Vodacom
At number 2 is Vodacom. A major player in the ISP business in Port Harcourt with services everywhere. Vodacom connects you through license microwave radios as well as their V-SAT if you are in a remote area. uptime is well above 96% and like does not get affected by interference. Downsides to using Vodacom are high cost of equipments and subscription and having to purchase a higher pair of radios when upgrading say from 5Mbps to 10Mbps.
1. Internet Solutions Nigeria (ISN)
This ISP is like a diamond in the rough. Most people dont know much about it in Port Harcourt even though its a household name in Lagos. ISN provides 96% uptime, dedicated and uncapped internet with last mile on microwave. Cost of equipment is very cheap, no purchase of equipment needed when upgrading, provides 24/7 support and 15 minute on-site policy- this means that it doesnt take them more than 15minutes to get an engineer to your office when there are issues. They also have monitoring devices that notify them about the status of their customers' links. This is why they call the customer first before the customer call them to complain. Downsides to using ISN is that the service is not available everywhere in Port Harcourt and the cos of V-SAT like we all know is usually expensive. The good news is that the major areas a well-covered.
So, there you have it. Consider this before you subscribe to any service provider's network.

Phones / Samsung Browser Gets Ad Block Features by timigate(m): 2:51pm On Feb 01, 2016
Samsung has decided to come down on the side of anti-ads. Today, the smartphone giant is updating its Android browser to support content and ad blocking add-ons.
The Internet 4.0 browser, which is installed by default on Samsung’s phones and tablets, is seeing an update today on devices which are running Android Lollipop or newer. Samsung’s isn’t providing ad blocking capabilities as standard, but is now opening the door for users to install ad blocking add-ons from third parties if they wish. The aim appears to be to allow customers to speed up web page loading times and save on their data allowances, as advertisements can be rather bandwidth heavy, as well as better competing with features from popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.

Ad blocking remains far less common on mobile than it is in the desktop space, but this is probably somewhat linked to the fact that some default Android browsers don’t provide ad blocking capabilities and many consumers stick with the pre-installed software. Samsung’s large install base could certainly see the number of ad block users increase now, although that will require users to go out of their way to install these extensions.

Science/Technology / Google Testing 5G Internet by timigate(m): 11:24am On Feb 01, 2016
Data transmission using millimeter wave technology is getting a lot of press lately. First, the startup Starry has an event where it shows off a super-expensive router and its vision of how it might become a wireless ISP of-sorts: using high-frequency spectrum to transmit data signals to and from a box that hangs outside your house or apartment, which should (presumably) get you gigabit speeds so long as you have line-of-sight between the receiver and transmitter.

And now, a new report from The Guardian reveals that Google is also testing out millimeter wave technology for high-speed Internet access. Google's plan appears much different, however. First off, it's conducting its tests in secret—under the alleged codename of "SkyBender" (which sounds a bit more like the title of a James Bond film than an actual project).
Google, unlike Starry, doesn't seem to be very interested in static base stations. Instead, Google is testing out flying drones and other support aircraft that would be able to use millimeter wave transmissions to give connected clients gigabit transmission speeds. However, the difficulty in doing so is that these transmissions have a working range that's much, much less than today's 4G transmissions. Google can use phased arrays to focus transmissions between a drone and a connected client, but it's an expensive (and power-hungry) proposition.
As for what might happen when it rains, when it's foggy, or when some other weather condition affects the transmissions (or the drones themselves), we don't yet know—and Google might not either, given that the weather isn't likely to get very crazy at the New Mexico spaceport where the company is testing out these transmissions. It's actually leasing around 15,000 or so feet of space at the Virgin Galactic "Gateway to Space" terminal for an alleged $1,000 per day, and has spent around $300,000 for the various equipment it needs to run its tests. These tests will continue until July or so, which is how long the Federal Communications Commission has given the company permission to run them.

It's unlikely that you'll see a bunch of solar-powered SkyBender drones hovering around the places you typically frequent at any point soon. However, since Google's SkyBender project falls under its Google Access team—which also works on Project Loon—it's possible that Google could also be using its tests to work on more ways to quickly deploy wireless connectivity to areas that need it, like places affected by a natural disaster.

Phones / LG Fixed A Bug In G3 That Left 10 Million Phones Vulnerable To Attack by timigate(m): 7:17am On Jan 29, 2016
Last Thursday, Cynet in collaboration with BugSec, discovered a serious vulnerability issue affecting LG G3 smartphones. They informed LG about the issue prior to going public with it, and the company jumped into action quickly. A patch is now available that closes the data-theft hole, and LG is encouraging all G3 owners to to get the latest update for their devices ASAP.

The bug is found in a particular app called Smart Notice that comes pre-installed on LG G3 smartphones. The notification platform serves to convey a variety of relevant information to users, but what it failed to do was analyze data thoroughly before presenting it. Researchers discovered it was possible to manipulate data in such a way that malicious code could be executed remotely.
“The vulnerability can easily lead to authentic phishing attacks and to a full denial of service (DOS) on the device,” wrote Cynet. Since the app comes pre-installed, the number of affected devices is estimated to be a whooping 10 million worldwide.
If you are interested in knowing the workings of this exploit , Ars Technica has a more comprehensive write-up detailing the two ways researchers were able to compromise devices through the bug. In the meantime, if you’ve got a G3 or know someone who does, better get that device updated before it “updates” you.

Computers / How To Browse Anonymously by timigate(m): 6:28pm On Jan 28, 2016
Your browser knows a whole lot about you, and it shares that information with a great many strangers. From your passwords to your usernames, emails, numbers on credit/debit cards, pins, etc. As simple as it is to protect these information when browsing, so many of us ignore the dangers that come with the usual way of browsing.
Your browser almost certainly has a private mode where it won’t save cookies, searches, or history. In Chrome, it’s called New incognito window. In Internet Explorer and Edge, it’s called InPrivate Browsing. In Firefox, it’s New Private Window. But it’s not perfect. Your ISP can still see where you’ve been, and every site you visit will still see your IP address.
An even better solution is to use the Tor browser, which hides your IP address and encrypts everything for most of the journey between your PC and whomever you’re communicating with. You can think of it as a very private private mode.

Phones / How To Change The Android Auto Rotation Settings. by timigate(m): 11:00am On Jan 28, 2016
With most phones becoming bigger now, it makes sense to rotate over to landscape mode sometimes. If that’s the case, you might want the screen to move along with you, so it’s a more natural experience that matches how you’re holding the phone or tablet.
There are so many ways to do this with Android Marshmallow. If you have the Google Now Launcher, swipe right over to Google Now and launch the Settings.
Make sure you have auto-rotate flipped on in the Accessibility section and in the Google Now Launcher if you’re using that on your home screen.
Then touch Allow rotation to ensure that the feature is enabled. This allows the rotation of only the home screen, and only if you're using the Google launcher (other custom launchers that come with your phone may or may not have a similar function).
To allow apps to rotate the screen according to the orientation of your device, or stop them from rotating if you find them turning around while you lie in bed with your phone, go to Settings > Accessibility and turn on Auto-rotate screen. This is on by default on most phones.
You may notice a screen rotation lock button in the quick settings of your phone, too. Swipe down from the top of the screen to check.
Now when you turn your device you’ll see the app icons, search bar, and other details flip their position. It’s particularly great for larger devices like the Nexus 6P and tablets as you won’t have to turn your head anymore when you switch from portrait to landscape mode.

Computers / Oracle To Employ 1400 Professionals From Europe, the Middle East, And Africa. by timigate(m): 8:29am On Jan 28, 2016
Software giant, Oracles hopes to cash in on the growing momentum around cloud computing with sale-oriented hire.
Its hopes to achieve this by hiring 1400 cloud-focused professionals across Europe, the Middle-east and Africa to boost the adoption of its platform for off-premise services in the region.
According to the California-head-quartered company's recent second quarter financial results, its cloud activities account for around 7% of oracle's overall total revenue, and in the past six months, its claims have signed up over 3600 software-as-a-service (Saas) and platform-as-a-service customer (PaaS).
The company's chief technical officer (CTO), Larry Ellison, previously declared that the company is on course to book $1.5bn in SaaS and PaaS deals before the end of this present financial year.
To help take advantaged of the demands for the company's cloud services, the company has decided to increase the cloud sales professional it employs, with emphasis on those with at least two years' experience.
The company will recruit 1400 people to work in six locations in Amsterdam, Cairo, Dubai, Dublin, Malaga, and Prague.
To show its seriousness in growing its cloud sales force, Oracles plans to open sales centres in Amsterdam and Cairo in addition to offices in Dubai, Dublin, and Prague.
The new recruits will be responsible for spreading Oracle's portfolio of cloud applications while helping users tailor their Information Technology strategies to include more of off-premise technology, the company said.
The president of the company, Loic Le Guisquet, said the overall aim of the recruitment process is to make sure that their customers are supported every step of the way in the journey to the cloud.
"We are hiring 1400 sharp, ambitious inside sales professionals across Europe, the Middle East and Africa" he said.

Phones / Opera Mini Gets Improved Download Manager And Language Support by timigate(m): 11:58am On Jan 27, 2016
For those of us that use Opera Mini, one of the best browsers available in Google play store, rejoice and be merry because the popular browser is getting a total makeover that will change your browsing experience forever!
Perhaps the biggest news here is that Opera Mini is getting improved language support. In previous versions of Opera Mini, the user interface language was set according to the language on Android itself. Now the Opera team has added in the ability to choose from a list of 90 installed languages, which should help users around the world surf the internet faster. Many countries, including India, Indonesia, Nigeria and South Africa, have a population that uses several native languages. Now folks that live in these regions will have the most common languages in their country shown to them at the top of the settings menu, instead of the browser choosing it for them. Users will also be required to select a language the first time they use this updated version of the browser. This update includes an improved download manager, to which the Opera team has included loads of improvements and tweaks to improve the stability and speed of downloads. In addition to these major changes, Opera Mini now also comes with a QR reader, so interested users can scan all the QR codes they want without having to leave the application.
The update is now available in the Google Play Store, so head to the link attached below for the download.

Phones / Snapchat Rewind Feature Finally Arrives With Latest Update by timigate(m): 9:08am On Jan 27, 2016
Snapchat pictures and clips varnish immediately after being viewed, so you must make a good first impression. Today, Android users are getting a feature iOS users got in a recent update.
The latest Android app update brings the video rewind filter to your Snapchat clips. It plays your video backwards. Just find the right filter by swiping, apply it and you will be good to go.

There seem not to be other major changes as the Google play store page doesn’t even list the common bug fixes and performance improvements, so this seems to be all about this single feature

This is a neat little improvement to the video feature, which was introduced back in 2013. Now you can enjoy it and the feature is only an update away. Head to Google play store now to get your groove on.

Computers / The Use Of Robot To Cause 5.1 Million Job Loss By 2020 by timigate(m): 8:04am On Jan 27, 2016
Catastrophic labour market changes, not excluding the rise of robots and artificial intelligence, will result in a net loss of 5.1 million jobs over the next five years in 15 leading countries, according to an analysis published in Davos on Monday.
The projection by the World Economic Forum (WEF), which is holding its annual meeting in the Swiss ski resort this week, assumes a total loss of 7.1 million jobs, offset by a gain of 2 million new positions.
The 15 economies covered by the survey account for approximately 65 percent of the world’s total workforce.
The assessment highlights the challenges brought upon by the adoption of modern technologies that are automating and making redundant multiple human tasks, from manufacturing to healthcare.
With the International Labour Organization, part of the United Nations, already forecasting an increase in global unemployment of 11 million by 2020, the size of the additional job losses is sobering.
Two-thirds of the projected losses are expected to fall in the office and administrative sectors as smart machines take over more routine tasks, according to latest findings, which are based on a global survey of personnel and strategy executives.
The WEF has made "the fourth industrial revolution" - a topic covering robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology - the official theme of this year's Davos meeting, which runs from Jan. 20 to 23.
The "Future of Jobs" report concluded that jobs would be displaced in every industry, although the impact would vary considerably, with the biggest negative losses likely to be in healthcare, reflecting the rise of telemedicine, followed by energy and financial services.
At the same time, however, there will be a growing demand for certain skilled workers, including data analysts and specialist sales representatives.
Women will be the biggest losers as their jobs are often concentrated in low-growth or declining areas such as sales, office and administrative roles, the report said.

While men will see approximately one job gained for every three lost over the next five years, women face more than five jobs lost for every one gained.

Phones / Back To Back Fine: MTN Fined $160m By Cameroon. by timigate(m): 4:07pm On Jan 26, 2016
The law is definitely taking over as MTN has be slapped with a back to back fine, and every single fine has resulted in a huge amount payable to two West African countries- Nigeria and Cameroon. The Cameroonian government has fined MTN $160 million yesterday. The fine, which was incurred for failure to pay taxes on games and gambling services, was equally extended to other telecommunications firms, including Orange and other companies. This came off the heels of an investigation into the sector, leading to a total fine of $283 million that included Camtel and Viettel which were also in violation of the regulations.
In the report written by CONAC, the Cameroonian anti corruption commission, MTN and Orange were also accused of not paying taxes on their money transfer system, known as Mobile Money.
The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) had in October 2015, issued a landmark fine of ₦1.04 trillion against MTN Nigeria, but MTN in counter moves initiated legal proceedings against the NCC.
With the fines hitting from back to back, these are definitely not good times for the South African company. One thing is for sure though, MTN is not willing to say “Egbon government, if you want the money you can come and collect it”

Computers / Why Windows Defender Is Better Than Your Antivirus. by timigate(m): 1:40pm On Jan 26, 2016
I found this particularly useful and insightful not just because Microsoft have upped their game but because Windows defender, the free in-built antivirus from Microsoft that we all love to ignore has been proven to be more effective than the likes of Norton antivirus and Eset. We've all loved to hate Microsoft's free Windows Defender software—it's been so mediocre that it's been considered the baseline metric in third-party tests. But recent independent tests show it's actually outperforming a number of third-party suites, some of which charge you money to use them.
Results released by AV-test.org for the month of December put Microsoft right in the middle of the pack of its list of antivirus software for home users

From the image below, I laughed in Chinese when I noticed the absence of Norton on the list. More amusing is the position of Eset. Norton is one of the most used paid antivirus in Naija. You might wanna look at this post before taking a decision about the effectiveness of Windows defender, and if you must go somewhere else, just make sure you are not paying for what your free windows defender is better than.
Just so you know, I have not used a third party antivirus on my PC in two years.

Phones / Samsung Gold Smart Watch-the Watch That Tells You When Jesus Will Return by timigate(m): 10:23am On Jan 26, 2016
[img][/img]
Samsung’s gold smartwatch might be wrapping around your wrists soon. The tech giant announced Monday that the Gear S2 Classic New Edition will begin rolling out first to China, with an eventual trip to the US and the rest of the world.

While Samsung didn’t announce a specific price, it’s available for pre-order in Europe for €480. That would put it at about $520 (158600 naira! It has to tell me when Jesus will return). This is by far cheaper than Apple’s gold watch which started at $10000. Understandably because it is made of pure gold as against the gold plated Samsung’s Gear S2 Classic New Edition.

It’s also worth noting that like the Gear S2, the new watch will run Samsung’s Tizen OS instead of Android Wear.

Science/Technology / How To Set Up VPN On Mikrotik by timigate(m): 8:56am On Jan 26, 2016
You are home but still want to be able to access servers, share files, pick office calls, print to a printer in your office, then what you need is a remote access VPN. What better way to have it configured than on a Mikrotik router. One of the best things that have happened to home office/small office (SOHO) is Mikrotik. Take it from me and am not saying this because of the complexity involved when setting up a Cisco gear;I am a Cisco professional. Mikrotik has made it possible for you to have a wireless outdoor radio with full routing functions, firewall and VPN capabilities all wrapped into one very inexpensive box, plus, it is very easy to configure. What more can you ask for.
Anyway,my aim here is to show you how to set up a remote access VPN using ANY Mikrotik router with a PPP function. Here we go.

Make sure all the basic configurations needed for your router to access the internet have been entered, have at least one public IP address for users to dial up to. Having done these little things, lets begin. Follow the steps outlined in the pictures below:
In the first picture, Click on PPP,then under the profile tab, enter a name for the profile, enter the local address on the router's LAN interface that connects to the network you want clients to access remotely, enter an address from your network that you want given to the user upon successful connection. If you have more than one client connecting to your VPN server at a time, create a pool and use the pool instead. Apply and ok.
Next step in the second picture: under the secret tab, enter a username for clients, enter password, choose the profile created in step one above, service should be set to PPTP or ANY. Apply and ok
In the third picture, under the interface tab, click on pptp server, in the window that appears, click on enable, choose the profile created in step one. Apply and ok.
Then in the fourth picture, click on the LAN interface you configured your VPN for and choose proxy-arp. Without doing this, your VPN clients will connect be will not be able to communicate with any device on the LAN. This is where the configuration ends. To connect to the VPN from a windows 10 computer, where is what you need to do:Am using Windows 10. To connect, go to network and sharing centre, click on set up a new connection or network (your computer MUST be connected to the internet) click on connect to a work place, click on no,create a new connection, click next, click on use my internet connection, enter the public address on your VPN server, and following the rest steps;it is easy.

Computers / How To Boot To Safe Mode In Windows 10 by timigate(m): 10:01am On Jan 25, 2016
One of the problems we have had to face in windows 8, 8.1, and 10 is that the old ways of booting into safe mode no longer work- F8, Shift+F8 , etc do not work anymore. These processes do not work anymore because the boot sequence has become faster than ever before. This does not mean that the safe mode no longer exists, it simply means the process for getting into has changed. Here is how to go about it.
From your windows search, type run and hit the enter key.In the dialog box that appears, type msconfig and hit the enter key
Click on the boot tab and check the box for safe boot. Apply and ok. Windows will prompt you for a restart. Its ok! Allow it.

Phones / How To Mirror Your Android Screen On Tv by timigate(m): 3:39pm On Jan 23, 2016
It is now possible for you to extend your android phones’ display to your TV. This is useful for showing presentations, displaying pictures, or even playing some cool games. .
So how does one go about casting the screen of an Android device to a television? It's quite simple, actually.
1 Make sure you have the Chromecast app installed on your Android device. You can download it from the Play store.
2 Ensure that you're connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.
3 After opening the Chromecast app, slide out the menu and select Cast Screen/Audio.
4 Tap on the yellow button, followed by the device you'd like to connect to.

Science/Technology / Microsoft To Not Support Future Processors Except On Windows 10 by timigate(m): 4:09pm On Jan 16, 2016
Microsoft has long been the bastion of long term support for older platforms, so today’s support news out of Redmond is particularly surprising. Intel launched it’s 6th generation Skylake cores back in August, and support on Windows 7 has been not as strong as Windows 10 right out of the gate. It’s not terribly strange that new features like Intel’s Speed Shift will not be coming to Windows 7, but today Microsoft announced that going forward, new processors will only be supported on Windows 10. Skylake will only be supported through devices on a supported list, and even those will only have support until July 2017.

For the average consumer buying a new PC, this is not a huge issue. Generally, consumers buy a PC and use the operating system that it comes with. That is going to be Windows 10. But the enterprise schedule is often much more drawn out when it comes to desktop operating system support. Windows XP was the most famous example of this, with businesses clinging to it well past its best before date, because Windows Vista and newer versions of the operating system significantly changed the system rights and driver models, rendering older programs incompatible.
The move to Windows 7 was very drawn out, so perhaps Microsoft is trying to avoid this again in the future, but moving an enterprise to a new desktop OS can bring a lot of testing requirements, training, and back-end infrastructure updates which are all non-trivial. Microsoft has made its name in the enterprise by being generous with support lifetimes, and I think what is most troubling about today’s news is that Windows 7 has long-term support until January 14, 2020, and Windows 8.1 until January 10, 2023. News like this is going to catch a lot of companies off-guard, since they would have been expecting to have at least until 2020 to migrate off of Windows 7, and many of these companies have just finally moved to Windows 7 after a decade or more on XP.

To give just 18 months with these support policies is likely not what companies want to hear. This doesn’t mean that Windows 7 will be end of life in July 2017, but if you can’t run it on new hardware, this is going to put a dent in device sales too. If companies are not ready to move to Windows 10, they may have to stick with older hardware.
This does not just affect Intel based machines either. According to the blog post my Terry Myerson, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform for Kaby Lake (Intel’s next gen 14 nm processors), Snapdragon 820 (Qualcomm), and Carrizo (AMD).
Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support. This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon, while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon. For example, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel’s upcoming “Kaby Lake” silicon, Qualcomm’s upcoming “8996” silicon, and AMD’s upcoming “Bristol Ridge” silicon.
After July 2017, computers on the supported list that are still running Windows 7 will still get security updates, but any updates specific to that platform will not be released if it risks the reliability of other Windows 7 or 8.1 platforms.
To me, the oddest part of the announcement is who it is coming from. When Intel releases a new CPU, it is generally the motherboard makers working with Intel who provide the correct BIOS emulation modes and drivers for older versions of Windows. It’s somewhat odd that Microsoft is the one announcing this news rather than a company like Intel or AMD stating they won’t be supporting the older platform.
