Sports › Re: Ethiopia Vs Nigeria - WCQ (1 - 2) On 13th October 2013 by timilehin007(m): 10:01pm On Sep 30, 2013
dozai: When we travel to high mountain areas as Nigeria will in the second week of October to
Ethiopia, our bodies initially develop inefficient physiological responses. There is an increase in breathing and heart rate to as much as double, even while resting. Pulse rate and blood pressure go up sharply as our hearts pump harder to get more oxygen to the cells. These are stressful changes, even for super athletes like professional footballers.
There are two major kinds of environmental
stresses at high altitude for humans according
to research done by the University of Colorado
and being cited here.
First, there are the alternating daily extremes
of climate that often range from hot, sun
burning days to freezing nights. This shouldn’t
really affect the Eagles as they will be in a
plush Hotel and in climate controlled buses
except on game day.
But the low humidity caused by the above,
resulting in rapid dehydration will. This means
drinking. For all I care the NFF should charter
an extra plane of ‘pure water’ if need be to
keep our birds hydrated throughout their stay.
They should be drinking and urinating nonstop
- except when scoring goals.
Second, the air pressure is lower.
This is because when we breathe in air at sea
level, the atmospheric pressure of about 14.7
pounds per square inch (1.04 kg. per cm.2)
causes oxygen to easily pass through
selectively permeable lung membranes into the
blood. At high altitudes, the lower air pressure
makes it more difficult for oxygen to enter our
vascular systems. The result is hypoxia , or
oxygen deprivation.
Hypoxia usually begins with the inability to do
normal physical activities, such as climbing a
short flight of stairs without fatigue. Other
early symptoms include a lack of appetite,
vomiting, headache, distorted vision, fatigue,
and difficulty with memorizing and thinking
clearly.
The fatigue, distorted vision and thinking
clearly really have me worried. Can you
imagine being saddled with all three and about
to take a penalty?
I become even more worried because while the
rest of the human population continue to
suffer serious health consequences, native
inhabitants thrive well in the highest parts of
the world, such as the Himalayas, Andes and
Ethiopia. These people have undergone
extensive physiological and genetic changes,
particularly in the regulatory systems of
respiration and circulation, when compared to
the general lowland population. This special
adaptation is now recognised as one of the
finest examples of natural selection in action.
The NFF may know all of this but they don’t
really think it will be much of a factor. Our
team will arrive on the 11th and play on the
13th and they claim that the above detailed
condition won’t affect them with this quick in
and out deployment as the body will be in
quasi shock. To back up their logic they point
to the 2-2 draw in 2012 when we flew in and
out all within four days.
Having been to Ethiopia myself I know how
absolutely absurd this is - both scientifically
and psychologically. And even if the playing
field were even what message are they sending
to the African champion when it looks like they
are aiming for a draw rather than an outright
win?
Tsk tsk tsk !
I am praying Keshi and the team refreshingly
ignores their blunder as they have been forced
to do from time to time, and aim on getting all
points. Rather the delegation should focus on
making the best of a bad situation. The team
should try and lodge and sleep somewhere
lower than Addis for that solitary night and
ferry to the higher Stadium on game day.
Meanwhile their Nutritionist has to bombard
them with both iron supplements and
carbohydrates that will improve the bodies
ability to absorb oxygen, and get the energy
needed to adjust to the elevation. Alcohol has
to be looked upon the same way we look at
Ebola. The Eagles must now help themselves to
even the odds which are now clearly stacked
against them and fight to win.
Research coined from Human Evolutionary
Biology. The University of Colorado
. What is this one saying. Who is this madman
