Things Fall Apart is a rudimentary story book. Someone of Soyinka’s status, with the command of the English language, knowledge of Yoruba spirituality and intellectualism - won’t write something as basic as that.

I prefer Soyinka’s “The Man Died” - the level of introspection and use of language, is on the next realm.

Let me use rap analogy:

Achebe made “The Eminem Show” (the highest selling rap album ever) while Soyinka made “Chronic”/“Illmatic”. Real rap buffs should be able to read between the lines, lol.

Personally, the only person that comes close is Cyprian Ekwensi. The People of the City and An African Night Entertainment were mad classics. Chukwuemeka Ike is a honorable mention too.

if not for politics that made Soyinka clinch the Nobel prize for literature, the global reception of China Achebe's "Things fall apart" which sold 20 million copies world wide and translated into 50 major languages in the world far eclipse any work done by Soyinka. In fact, Times magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Even Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has described the work as "the first novel in English which spoke from the interior of the African character, rather than portraying the African as an exotic, as the white man would see him." So guy just leave that Nobel laureate stuff, it's just a title. Abiy Ahmed of Ethiopia won the prize for peace, yet he's the one almost annihilating the Tigray people in the northern part, Same goes for Barrack Obama who also won the same prize, (someone who destroyed Libya, that was once a prosperous country under Ghadaffi) so in terms of global impact and recognition, none of Soyinka's work even comes close to China Achebe's " Things fall apart".

I can go and memorize all the jokes in the world does not mean I can stand in front of a crowd like Bovi,Okey Bakassi and others. The subject matter is important but how the story is told is what makes literature.

Do not forget Achebe wrote that book at the age of 28. He was still learning his craft . It was not a piece of mature writing and it is in my opinion more like a commercial.novel written very directly like a journalist rather than showing nuance or subtlety of a master

The main thing about Things fall apart is that it was a FIRST and it was actively promoted first by Heinemann and later the Nigerian government making it compulsory reading in Nigeria and many African countries

Finally it was NOT about colonial invasion. It was about a man who embodied the traits of success and strength admired by his people A STRONG MAN AND ACHIEVER those same traits would be his undoing . A tree survives storms and hurricanes by being flexible.
He was not flexible and he broke. Achebe in future went on to say this was a. FAULT in the Ibo culture

Things Fall Apart is a 'classic' in all sense of the word.
Infact, it was an instant classic.
Mind you, it wasn't the first. Cyprian Ekwensi had written at least two novels before that.
Achebe is a legend in the class of Homer, Shakespeare etc.
With a Nobel, Grammy, Oscar, Ballon D'Or etc,. Soyinka will still deal with the ghost of Achebe

Achebe didn’t win the proper Man Booker Prize for literature - hence you didn’t see him on the list of winners. He won the international version, which is more of a legacy recognition award.

Prof. Wole Soyinka is greater than Achebe in the literary world and he’s much more versatile. And apart from the Nobel Prize Laureate - he has won prestigious awards in Theatre. Prof. Soyinka is also a revolutionary and an activist on the same level as some of the greats.

Achebe was just a writer - a great story teller. That’s where the comparison ends.
