They also served as hangout for touts, miscreants and people with a tendency for crime. Alcohol indulgence and the smoking of cannabis sativa are also synonymous with under bridges in Lagos.

However, all that appears to be fading into history.

The Ambode administration, in the ongoing reformation of the transport sector in Lagos, is carrying out an unprecedented reformation of under all the bridges in Lagos.

The administration is demonstrating a tenacity to ensure that under Lagos bridges become a pleasure to the eye.

A landscaping and beautification project is ongoing in major bridges in Lagos.

Soon, under bridges in Lagos will no longer be synonymous with indulgence in alcohol, hard drugs and the assembly of miscreants.

Indeed, Ambode is not joking under bridges.

An expedition was commissioned and granted by the British crown to head west and claim territory on its behalf.

On getting to what is today Virginia in America ( the state of Virginia was so named by the British explorers as that was were they first landed), the British expedition wasted no time looking for gold. They had contact with the natives and after a long exhaustive description of what they were looking for, the Indians returned with corn since this was the only thing that looked yellow like the gold coins the gringos were asking for.

The exhibition needed to discover something that they could return back to England with in order to secure subsequent trips back and since they could not find any gold they then had to look for something else. They then discovered Cannabis which the native Sharmans used in meditatiion and healing. They also found tobacco which the natives used both for recreation and also medicinally.

On getting back to England, Tobacco and Marijuana were presented as exotic vices. Remember at this same time the Dutch were making tons of money shipping Opium into Europe from China.

But they will later find out that Marijuana could be grown in Europe unlike Tobacco which grew in warm tropical environments.
You can't control the price of a commodity that you can't control it's supply.

With the help of the Church, Marijuana was condemned as the plant of the devil which heathen natives consumed in their worship to their pagan gods. Weed was banned but Tobacco was promoted. In Victorian era Tobacco was seen as a fashionable vice among the rich aristocracy.

The Virginia Tobacco Company was formed and later on the British American Tobacco Company to set up plantations in the new land of America.

Only one thing left was to get the man power to tend to Tobacco cultivation.

The first alternative was to enslave the native Indians just as the Spanish enslaved natives in the Carribean but that was not possible because the Indians were a ferrocious people who fought off any form of enslavement.

The Virginia Tobacco and the British America Tobacco companies then decided to get servitude workers from the British Isles to work on their plantations in the new land.

Getting workers was no problem as most British and European peasant farmers saw this as an opportunity to escape the grinding poverty in England. They quickly signed up in what they thought was an adventure only to end up in brutal enslavement.

A servitude worker will have to sign 7yrs of indentured labour to the Tobacco company working in plantations meeting a stipulated quota of Tobacco production in return for the company transporting them to the new world.

Because of this brutal arrangement coupled with Malaria epidemic, over 80% of servitude European workers died in the first year on arriving on the continent. Escaping from the slave like plantations further inland was also dreaded as the natives did not hesitate to kill any gringo they encountered. This situation continued for close to a decade until one day a Dutch Ship pulled int harbour with a shipment of "Niggers" for sale.

This is how slavery entered into America; to meet the tobacco supply of wealthy Europeans.

Tobacco is truly a cancer to the world.

If only they never rejected weed in Europe only God knows how the world would have been a better place.
