Chapecoense: Journey of a year comes to an end today. Its all been GOD. Today, GOD was evident, He showed me mercy and I now know its not by how prepared you are, you just have to have faith in GOD and believe. Last night I knelt down on my knees and prayed to GOD to show me mercy that I should be favoured. Na so I reach embassy and waited along with many other people. na so one lady come separate NIV from IV. Passed through all necessary checks and finger printing and I stayed in the queue waiting for VO's to come. Na so window 3 open and one chinese guy call say his window is now available. I be wan enter window 7 becos the vo there just approved one guy. Very jovial VO. but na so dem usher me make I go window 3 chai. na so I stand infront of the chinesse VO who shouldn't be more than 34.
VO: Good morning how are you? me: Good morning, Iam fine and you? VO: Iam great pls pass ur documents. Me: slides passport and i20 to his window. VO: typing.. What is bringing you to the US? Me: Iam going to the US for my undergraduate degree in molecular and cellular biology which I will be studying at the university of maine for a duration of 48 months VO: How many schools did you apply to? me : I applied to 4 schools. VO: name them Me: ETSU, Umaine, Boston Uni and OSU( I said all in full tho) VO: Of all these schools why did u pick Umaine. me: Among all the schools I applied to, I chose the university of maine because I will have the opportunity to join an ongoing research under professor mellisa research group. The research focuses on the human JC polyomavirus which is.. (VO cuts in) VO: Why will u talk about a research that does not exist. Moreover are u a graduate student? Why talk about research? pls say something else( He said this gesticulating). Me: see wahala.. my heart come dey beat at this point but I sha compose myself and said " I chose umaine because I discovered it offers top notch undergraduate mentorship programs and I had the chance to speak with some professors there and I found out that they are well experienced( I just weak as I talk this one.. becos I never in this world envisaged that i would say this lol and the VO's face was so straight, no smiling at all.
VO: did you do SAT? me: no but I did the TOEFL. VO: Did you do SAT? (he repeated) Me: no but I did the toefl(I said again) Vo: Why didn't you do SAT? me: my school did not require me to write SAT. na so the guy just dey type. He suddenly kept my passport and returned my i20. and he said "Pick up your passport 3 days time and safe trip" Me: thank you.
This could only be grace and favour. I just couldn't believe it after starting off so poor. Special appreciation To GOD ALMIGHTY for making this possible, to slimmy2005 for sevis fee payment, adebimpe(will read ur transcript soon), Victor, walspring, neurosci, lagosismyhome and texrem for reviewing my transcript, and to my mum and dad who supported this dream and many others I didn't mention. I say thank you. I got admitted to umaine Bangor to study Chemical engineering but couldn't attend |

gaviria: Good morning all, I want to use this opportunity to specially thank God almighty for his grace and favor in the course of my US movement. And I want to thank Mr Seun (Shayhune) who helped me after my second Denial last week. He volunteered to help me through the whole process and mock interview. God bless you. And to everyone else that corrected me when I posted my transcript last week, thank you too. God bless everyone. After 2 denials (April 28 and May 18) I finally got my visa approved today (May 24). I went 3 times in less than a month, I wasn't going to relent because I'm not a quitter nor a dull guy although It's all the Grace of God. The 2 times I was denied, as I was leaving Walter carrington I went straight to a GTBank branch to pay the 64k again for the appointment. I told myself I wasn't going to quit and I'm going to the US whatever it took, the same way I told myself back then I wasn't going to any other school asides from Unilag when I left secondary school and people were discouraging me but I tried till I got my admission. Let me cut the story short. I chose the 6:30 appointment because I was told the VOs are always livelier in the morning and as such I should make sure I'm in the first 3-5 people on the queue inside. So I did that I was the second person to enter the consulate but by the time we got to the queue for the visa, I was third on the queue. So the fresh young guy VO called the first guy in front and the CGI guy told the girl behind him to follow him and queue behind him in front of the VO. So I was left in front, 5 seconds later I was called by a VO, mind you this VO was ruthless the last time I went for the interview. He was denying everyone that came to meet him that day, I guess he was in a bad mood or he only asked technical questions that the people weren't prepared for, I was praying not to get him that day but then I still got denied.lol. So as I walked towards him I just said "God take control". So he said Good morning and I answered Good morning and how was your night. VO: Night was good and yours? Me: Was alright too. VO: So tell me what interested you in this school that made you choose it. Me: My research interest aligns with that of a professor(Cuts me) VO: What research interest? Me: Embedded systems in power electronics. VO: What is Embedded systems Me: An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function on a larger electrical system (I just learnt that last night, didn't know what the research Entailed before last night, something just told me to google and know the definition of all the words in the research name) VO: So what will you be doing with this professor? (I didn't know what to say as I didn't prepare for that question) Me: The research is designed like your mobile phone where all the electronic circuits on the motherboard in the phone have a dedicated function in a larger electrical system which is the phone in its entirety. (Na idea I use, that was just an example of embedded system wey I repackage) VO: What school did you have your bachelors? Me: University of Lagos. Types for 5seconds and asks me to pick my visa in 3 days, I didn't expect it. It didn't last up to a minute and he didn't look at me once throughout, he was just typing and asking the questions. I was waiting for questions like "Who's paying"?,"What school and what course?", "What do you do now?. etc. I'm very happy. I was confident and very calm this time because not being calm cost me at my last interview. I was the first person issued a white paper today at the Lagos Consulate as that guy in front of me was still with that fresh VO guy and so was the girl behind him. Thanks to everyone for their encouraging transcripts and words. It's God at the end of it all, I prayed to God and emptied my pocket in church last Sunday and told God to help me this week and he did. Let me stop my epistle here, sorry I'm used to writing epistles. congrats.. Never say Never |

mamapee2017: house good evening, when I was denied visa last year in the DS 160 form then my father was in Nigeria ,but he travelled February this year and he is still there cos he has a green card , but my confusion is that my parents are not married so I know just little about him and the state he stays in USA , so am I still suppose to fill he is in Nigeria or USA pls I need help ?
secondly I learnt the VO don't grant Visa for students with nursing admission how true is this please ? ask him which state he stays! he's in USA yet you want to fill Nigeria, it can cause a serious immigration problem for you.. and make sure you state that he's a Green card go holder. And the VO can give visa for any course in as much as your intent is clear why not? |

gaviria: Good morning all. I'm a new member but I've been following so many threads on Nairaland since last year including this one without registering as a member. Everything has been going smoothly, i learned a lot. And it helped me in my GRE and TOEFL where I scored 312 and 100 respectively. But now I have an issue. And please I need the gurus in the house (walspring, imperioxx and other) to help. I don't know what the issue is. I applied for visa last month during the interview I wasn't all that prepared, so I stammered in the first question which was "Why did you choose this course?". I answered because I want to specialize in control Engineering which is a branch of electrical engineering and I enjoyed the theory behind it when I was an undergraduate, it was interesting and challenging " and every other question was just a formality. Me myself I knew I messed up so I didn't care much when she gave me the blue slip. But since that day I've been preparing hard for the interview the second time. I had an answer to virtually all the questions that could be asked because I read a lot of transcript and put down my answers, read them and knew them like the back of my hands. So I went for the interview yesterday again. And this was the transcript Greetings and pass me your passport and i20 VO: Why are you going to the US? Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Electrical and electronics engineering at the southern Illinois university in edwardsville, and I chose this school because it's one of the best schools in the Midwestern region of the United States in Electrical Engineering according to usnews.com and forbes.com, and most of the professors in the department are Ivy League trained which is synonymous to having an Ivy League education at a cheaper rate, like professor Tim York of the department who won the 2016 IEEE award of the year for his research paper on "Polarization on image sensoring" and they also have excellent research laboratories and facilities that'll aid in the advancement of my career in this field so that when I come back to the country I can be able to put my skills to work in the power sector of the country as power is one of the major issues we're facing in the country I'd like to come back and contribute my quota to the improvement and development of the sector. (P.S: I said every word)
VO: Where did you learn about all these you just said? Me: I went online to know more about the school because the last time I came I couldn't explain my situation very well.
VO: Who's paying for this trip? Me: My Dad.
VO: what does he do? Me: He'a a renowned lawyer with his own firm and he has about 10 associates working for him.
VO: What are the qualifications needed for this course or something (I didn't hear him very well, but I heard qualifications) Me: I have a bachelors degree in computer engineering from the university of Lagos.
VO: Have you ever traveled out? Me: I went for an AIESEC conference in Ghana when I was an undergraduate. (First interview I said the same thing but I forgot to put it in my first DS-160, but I put it in the second DS-160 that I've traveled to Ghana before)
VO: Where do you work currently? Me: I just completed my National Youth service in April this year as I graduated in November 2015. (In My DS-160 that place they asked for employment status and all, I put Where I worked during my service year.)
VO: Are you married? Me: No, I'm just 24 *laughs* .. VO laughed too and said "you never know".
Types for like 3 minutes non stop. And told me sorry you're not eligible at this time. I was weak, because I answered all the questions with so much fluency, I didn't stammer one time. I was just flowing. Please help me what can I do? I want to go for the third time asap because I have the answers to every technical question they can ask. Thanks a lot for the help. Bro he/she just asked you why are you going to the US and you said all that?? cmon.. that's one long epistle to digest.. you could have made it short and concise. everything other was perfect except the first answer it shows that you actually crammed it - to me tho.. and also I think you answered the usual second question which is - Why southern Illinois university in Edwardsville? I stand to be corrected |

Vo: Good morning Me: Good morning
Vo: what's your study plan? Me: I'm going to southern arkansas university for a masters degree in computer and information science which is a 30 credit hours course which I'm expected to complete in 2 years. I'd take courses in advanced programming, mobile computing, database management systems.... VO: cuts in... What did you study at undergraduate level? Me: physics Education Vo: so why did you choose this MCIS? Me: I work with a group of e business and alternate banking channels experts. With financial inclusion hitting a reasonable figure in Nigeria, the trends in the banking industry points at making banking more personal hence the need for new technologies like wearable banking systems which I'd be working on in the USA. Vo: please pick up your passport on Thursday. congrats man... uncle Sam awaits |

FrankNetter: I was wiping down the tops, counters and kitchen stuff, when the dude (who was sweeping) pulled up beside me, he was like "obi, you not from around here, are you?" I replied, "na bro, Im from Africa" (most people here think africa is a country, so its easier for me to say Im from africa to avoid too much talk). Suprisingly, he asked, "what country bro?" I replied "Nigeria".
"You miss home?"
I replied "Yeah man, its a great place with nice weather and lovely people"
He asked what I was doing there before i came over, I told him, next thing he asked was "if you got your life going over there, why come here?"
I replied "things are not so good over there bro". Next thing he said was "How bro, everybody corrupt?" At that point, I didn't even know what to say, or how to start jumping into this conversation
______________
see eh, you do not know how much buhari's utterances have damaged our image internationally. How do you start defending your country when your president has gone on international television to shame all the citizens of the country. One thing we should all know is that the internet never forgets. Here's someone who has never been to the country before, judging every single person based on what he read on the internet. Over the course of our conversation, he brought up a lot of topics: jollof rice (I later told him about fried rice too), fufu and our food in general.
He said he read about the miracle river and asked me if I've been there before, (I was like: WHaT miracle river?!) I later remembered the stuff I read over the news sometime about the water flowing from a statue that was healing people. He brought up the fact that we eat dogs, and asked if i eat that too. He said he read about our child soldiers (at this point, Im like WTF!?)
I had to ask him where he read all this stuff from, he said he googled up "Nigerian culture" and clicked on some random links and read through.
At this point, we delved into the culture discussion. We both brainstormed on the fact that the black americans have no culture whatsoever, they have no rules or guidelines. the mexicans, the italians, the indians, the caucasians and native americans have some sort of cultural backbone, some sort of values that govern their lives in a way. But the blacks in america have no culture. Its basically: born throway sort of mentality. A scenario where ratchetness, drugs, guns, gangs and violence are seen as a way of life. Later on, when I was all by myself, it dawned on me, maybe, just maybe, if we had fine-tuned our cultural values from the days of old and somehow blended it with the western education we got, nigeria would not be in the situation it is right now. Back then, baby-mamas and having kids out of wedlock were seen as a taboo, but look at us now. Are we slowly losing it? are we throwing our cultural values to the wind? will we end up like the akatas? (ask anybody for yankee the meaning)
I would be looking forward to the next time we work together, the conversation we had on that day was really refreshing. Akatas - Black Americans |

DoTheNeedful: Hello V.O,
I just realized that I made a mistake while filling my DS-160 form. I mistakenly entered my current place of residence as my place of birth. I have my place of birth correctly entered on my passport but as it is now, what I have on my DS-160 form is different in that regard. I have already booked a date for my visa interview with this same DS-160 form. I will like to know your opinion about this. Will it affect my visa application negatively? What can I do? My place of birth is Ogun but I mistakenly entered Lagos. Thank you. good you are going the needful |

van909: Gurus in the house please advice i graduated 2009 though working, i wanted to apply for my masters programme but g.p is low and i decided to go for undergraduate program with a different course. A friend told me that VO's hardly give visa to applicants who have been working and applying for 2nd degree. Please how true is this? thing is something's are better left unsaid. since you'd be going for the undergrad I'm sure the VO or nobody can know unless you say it or you've once applied for graduate study. I'd advise you apply without stating weather you once had a degree or worked - it's like having a fresh start, but be ready to convince the VO why you are just about to study considering that have graduated since 2009 and apparently you'd be using your wassce which will be much earlier ball is in your court.. ciao |
