At 11 p.m. on 31 January, the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. Although an 11-month transition period means the milestone will bring few immediate changes for researchers, the day marks the start of negotiations over the country’s future relationship with the bloc, including the United Kingdom’s role in EU science.

The UK government’s list of things to do before 31 December 2020 is ambitious. Its priority will be to secure a trade deal with the EU, to avoid potential chaos from trade barriers erected on 1 January 2021. The government also hopes to create a skills-based immigration system that would end freedom of movement for EU citizens into and out of the United Kingdom, as well as potentially introduce a raft of regulations covering everything from agriculture to aviation.

With Brexit under way, one of the many tasks for negotiators will be sorting out the country’s part in the EU’s next seven-year research programme, Horizon Europe, which will start on 1 January 2021. Any such agreement would normally come only after countries have agreed a trade deal.

Stepping of robots into the medical field is not new now. Apart from using efficient algorithms in medicine, we have seen robotic surgeries happening around the world. This time, the U.S is using a robot to treat a patient with Coronavirus.

The patient going through the experience of having a robot as his doctor reported to the medical authorities that he was feeling symptoms of the virus. Further diagnosis confirmed the disease on Monday. He had traveled to Wuhan recently, and the epidemic caught hold of him. He was isolated to control the spread of the virus. According to reports, he is in stable condition now.

There is another dimension that states the benefit of using robots for contagious diseases. As the word reflects, the fewer humans are exposed to any such scenario, the more lives one can save. But what about the doctors, who matter what, have to treat all kinds of patients, having their lives at risk at all times. So, here steps the robot in, who acts as the first point of contact with the patient and communicates with the patient. Using a screen, the information is sent to the human doctors. Fancy though, the robot is made to wear a stethoscope as well.

Recent research by Google Health has revealed that artificial intelligence can now assist doctors in detecting early signs of Breast cancer, earlier than radiologists. This publication is also vouching for another similar announcement that AI can predict death via EKG results. Is AI really strengthening its grounds in the medical field and can be considered as a replacement to medical experts?
If you’ve ever read about the diagnosis of cancer, you might be aware of the term mammogram and how these images are then studied by radiologists to detect the presence of abnormal cells. If the test results positive, further diagnosis is done to find whether the type is malignant or benign. In a similar fashion, substituting for the medical staff, an algorithm has been developed to identify cancer at similar or even fastest rates to these radiologists. The database of mammogram images is called as OPTINAM and has been made available for others to alter and make similar versions.

“We show an absolute reduction of 5.7% and 1.2% (USA and UK) in false positives and 9.4% and 2.7% in false negatives,” the study says.
We are still doubtful of how early-stage cancer shall be detected accurately as even today, over or false diagnoses result in unneeded treatments that can prove to be harmful to the patient. The experiment conducted included reading the mammogram’s results by a noted radiologist, and the same by Google Health’s trained algorithm. A well-made algorithm could further reduce the need for revisiting the results and could save a lot of time, resources and costs involved at the patient’s end.

Though repetitive scans and tests are recommended for women falling in certain age groups, the intervals have to be set by medical practitioners varying from case to case, as widespread exposure to rays can also affect negatively. In 2014, a similar study conducted in Canada found that women given annual scans felt difficulty surviving breast cancer in the longer run. Here again, an efficient system with further improvements could add to the intervals between these tests.
Another test on record was done comparing results from six individual radiologists in parallel to the AI-based algorithm. The latter gave 11.5 percent better results than the radiologists and confirmed a promising healthcare future. The same is also being developed for the diagnosis and screening of lung cancer. The success of this algorithm shall go a long way saving several females around the globe from one of the deadliest forms of cancer. But, studies are still under process to learn the trends of other types and how those interact with their surroundings. Hopefully, the pace with which AI is growing, we are quite hopeful that human critical thinking shall soon add more to medical sciences.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp will be getting the Dark Mode soon, it was only a matter of time after the same feature got introduced to Messenger and recently Instagram. According to WABetainfo, those who belong to the Beta testing program on Android have already gotten the Dark Theme update on version 2.20.13.

This only indicates the feature will soon be rolling out officially on WhatsApp. The APK is available for download to Beta participants and Dark Mode can be accessed by going to Settings and navigating to Chats to switch it on.
