ComputersRe: When Will Nigeria's Internet Exchange Take Off? by tomcat: 10:00pm On Dec 09, 2005
ok...sorry to go a bit off topic....

so broadband is solely associated with SAT-3..? the companies that are offering dsl...means that they offer it in SAT-3...or via satelite..?

I'm not extremely sure that SAT-3 is available either..? Is that for businesses only..?
ComputersRe: Is Broadband Internet Access Possible in Lagos? by tomcat: 10:41am On Nov 22, 2005

ComputersRe: Fiber Optics or VSAT, which way to go? by tomcat: 10:59pm On Nov 08, 2005
i do not think SAT-3 is yet available to individuals....

don't quote me on that...but I think that for a business to get access on sat-3 is around $2000 a month + $9000 for the equipment.ouch... undecided

Glo was supposed to have signed a deal with Alcatel to construct their own fiber optic cable, linking Lagos directly to London, but that is cancelled...the quicker private companies...will construct more fiber optics undersea cables...the cheaper proper internet connection will become...

If you want to avoid the costs of paying licence fees for antivirus...AVG antivirus...is a good and free antivirus...and it updates itself quite regularly...

http://www.grisoft.com

I used it in my pc...and is working just fine....

it is also used in a lot of commercial servers....

Personally I think that in whatever stage of the process you introduce VSAT...it's high latecy is inherent to the process....

Sat3 is the way to go...but it hasn't been exploited fully yet.... rolleyes
ComputersRe: Is Broadband Internet Access Possible in Lagos? by tomcat: 9:41am On Oct 28, 2005
what kind of download speeds are you getting..?
ComputersRe: Is Broadband Internet Access Possible in Lagos? by tomcat: 9:39pm On Oct 11, 2005
has anyone tried that netcom company yet...? what is their service like...?

I assume the the packages that they have...is shared bandwith...? and also the back end is Vsat...?
ComputersRe: Fiber Optics or VSAT, which way to go? by tomcat: 6:33pm On Sep 12, 2005
hm..haven't checked the forum..for a few time...but it seems to me...that it might be a confusion between fiber optics....

fiber optics should be compared over VSAT only if it is used as back end....

for example....is the connectivity with the outside world...to put it simple...

now...even if they have laid lots of kms of fiber optics in Nigeria....and the back end is still satelite...then the latecy is still near enough the same...

if the back end..is fiber optic though...like SAT3...then either wi-fi or fiber optic between the hub and the resident...is far quicker than any VSAT...
BusinessRe: Security in Nigeria by tomcat: 3:39pm On Aug 17, 2005
maybe some of the expats shouldnt be in nigeria. i hear the go over their quotas anyway and don't hire enough nigerians
I think that might be a topic for another thread...probably I would agree with you...although I don't know how a European company will open a branch factory in Nigeria (creating more jobs) without having at least at the beginning expats...to settle the whole project down and pass on the know how... huh

Still tho...doesn't answer my question how safe...or better what a white expat has to do and not to do..to remain safe in Lagos...
BusinessRe: Security in Nigeria by tomcat: 11:27am On Aug 17, 2005
so to elaborate on the subject of the post then....

how safe is for an expat working in Lagos (non oil related industry...)...??
GamingRe: PC or Console For Game? by tomcat: 11:13am On Aug 17, 2005
I guess choice is yours...

If you are using pc..for other things as well..like word processing, excell, photo processing, digital camera etc...then pc is the way to go....pc beats hands down a console...as long as it has top notch equipmenet in it...

If you want to invest money only for gaming...then go get a console...as it will cost you less than a pc...there is a wide variety of games..and all the game developers nowdays..are moving to consoles....
ComputersRe: My Computer Keyboard Often Needs Reinsertion or Rebooting by tomcat: 10:58am On Aug 17, 2005
I had similar problem where both my keyboard and mouse will lock up on boot....

I unplugged my keyboard (PS/2) and plugged back in...and after that it was fine...

Looks like ur pins on the PS/2 adaptor are damaged....by cleaning the pins with alcohol I don't think u will damage it...as long as you allow pleanty of time...for the alcohol to evaporate, cause u don't want to be plugging it in "wet".

If all the above fails I would replace the keyboard..and that would fix your problem...I do not think you need to replace your mouse as well...

If you replace the keyboard...might be a better option going USB instead of PS/2

Hope that helps...smiley
