PhonesRe: Glo Internet Network Has Stopped Working, Could It Be DNS Changer by tomcat: 9:20am On Jul 10, 2012
there is a damage on glo-1 submarine cable.

My guesses are that it will take them a few days to fix it, especially if they need to bring a special ship like when SAT-3 was damaged 4 years back.

Let's hope that they can get backup link...but i wouldn't hold my breath.
PhonesRe: Mobitel Vs Swift 4g Check It Out by tomcat: 1:12pm On Sep 25, 2011
there is a massive difference on ping just to start with between the 2, which might mean one of the 2 things:

1. Either on the top occassion you were also downloading something on your pc (or any other pc on your network) when u were performing the test

2. The top occassion ISP was using vsat and not fiber cable as backbone
ComputersRe: April 2011 Report On Prices Of Internet Access In Nigeria by tomcat: 4:22pm On Apr 26, 2011
it is equally important to take into account the speed of each provider,

for example as far as i know etisalat has only edge network meaning cannot go above 200-300kb download speeds. Not so sure on Airtel.

However MTN and Glo can easily scale up to 2-2.5Mb provided you have strong reception,
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 8:53am On Jan 13, 2011
agreed, speed is far lower than the 3g wireless solutions, however it all depends on what you are after,

i wanted no data limit, low ping, steady bandwidth with no ups and downs and end to end connectivity with fiber optic or copper.

As with all ADSL technologies sync speed is 512 and you get 83% of that, so you get 430kbits download speed and 224kbits upload speed.

Ping to london is between 110-120ms.
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 9:56pm On Jan 10, 2011
max on residential is 512/256 and they charge 12,000N + VAT

i have asked them many times for higher bandwidth but looks like their management is very rigid, and i get the idea that are very slow in reacting to the market and being flexible.

i think their phone number is 200 from glo mobile or try broadaccesscare@gloworld.com
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 9:24pm On Jan 10, 2011
i'm using it, it is both residential and for small businesses enterprises etc,

residential doesn't have much bandwidth but you get constantly what you are paying for,
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 7:55pm On Jan 10, 2011
as far as i know it is available in VI and Ikoyi,

i think there is a phone number on the website that gets you to their help desk and then they get you in touch with a glo sales person.

They charge 20,000N for installation and then there is a deposit depending on the package. There are different packages for home, business etc.
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 11:13pm On Jan 09, 2011
right now best internet you can get in town is glo broadaccess, but has reached only very few areas of lagos.

it is proper adsl connected to glo-1, fiber optic to DSLAM and copper as last mile.

packages are limited but prices are quite reasonable.

ping to london is 110ms
ComputersRe: Mtn Or Glo Internet Connection? Pls Advice by tomcat: 8:36am On Nov 19, 2010
There is no definite asnwer to your question:

1. depends if the location that you mainly use your 3g has good coverage. Get your stick ulocked and try with both Glo and MTN sim cards. 500N each and you will know which one you have better reception.

2. Glo right now is cheaper per GB as they have N7,500 per 6GB and at the moment they have an offer that every 3 renewals of 7,500 you get one free.

However, where i am Glo 3g gives me steardy downloads of around 2.5-2.8mbit with a ping to London of 200ms, but in another location i might be getting max 300-400kbit.

It really depends on your location and you have to try both for yourself to see which one gives you better reception

I have to admit, that N7,500 for 6 Gigs sounds good. Seems like they are really trying to compete with MTN which can only mean good things. However what I want to know is how it compares to MTN in terms speed, performance and relaibilty. Also, I wish there was some way to know if my location is covered by their HSDPA service.
if you have a 3g modem, unlock it so you can use both mtn and glo, charge each sim card with 500N and check the quality of service in your area for yourself, noone can tell you about the quality of service unless he/she lives next door to you,
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 12:51pm On Oct 23, 2010
guys Glo-1 is connected since 20/09/10 for 3g and shortly after to adsl,

this is not PR info, a simple tracert or ping can reveal that,

If they are going to reduce prices or not, or if areas other than lagos will see any difference is a different story,

however, whoever is using 3g glo in lagos in a good reception area or even fixed adsl should have seen a huge difference in the d/l speed and browsing speed.

i am getting tired of their various announcements without action. they hype the atmosphere and yet dont deliver on their promise.we had their various prelaunch .still not yet launched. and it is supposed to celebrate our independence.tomorrow is it and still no news. the cable has landed since last year and still not yet launched.
glo should get their acts together.organise things well so that people dont lose their appeal for them . Hope deferred makes the heart weary!!!!
glo1 is already connected and operational, glo's 3g internet and fixed line internet are both using glo1, also voice on international calls from their mobile is passing through glo-1 but i haven't checked that myself.

ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 9:30pm On Sep 21, 2010
hmm, i posted a tracert but somehow was not posted,

it is indeed the cable that passes throught cable & wireless in UK, as you can check from an ip whois,

it is quite responsive, max steady speed i got was around 1-1.3Mbit, but looks like there still some bottlenecks, as i couldn't watch smooth iptv that requires only 380kbit,

well it's a milestone for sure,
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 7:02pm On Sep 21, 2010
that means that 3g glo has passed its traffic through Glo-1, ping is low, which means it's fiber optic,

did you notice any difference in the browsing or the whole internet?
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 5:53pm On Sep 21, 2010
well if we get someone who is using 3g glo to post their results from speedtest.net or pingtest.net, we will know for sure if they have switched the traffic to glo-1 or is still satelite.
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 1:37pm On Sep 21, 2010
according to Glo they have migrated already their 3G-GPRS traffic to Glo-1 already,

i find it hard to believe however, can someone with glo 3g post a speedtest.net screenshot or a ping result to a london server please?
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 9:02am On Sep 21, 2010
although we are strafing away from initial subject, if you go to their website there is no package for 4 or 6Mb

the biggest one they have is 1024 at a ridiculous high price,

which means that the beta testing is just a few people testing the network with a bandwidth that is destined for all the users of the network,

400 and 512k is what i see from their website, so i don't see how one can get a constant 4-6Mb once they are out of the beta testing phase,
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 1:55pm On Sep 20, 2010
just to get back into the topic, i don't think the reduction in local calls has to do with Glo-1?

I think the international calls will benefit more from the connection of glo-1
ComputersRe: Sluggish Internet Speed by tomcat: 1:31pm On Sep 17, 2010
as far as i know etisalat has only EDGE network, as opposed to MTN and GLO which they have HSDPA

Etisalat average speed is around 120-150kbit

my friend, i prefer to have a discussion about when glo-1 will be connected something that will change internet map and prices for good, rather than posting in useless threads on how to cheat on mtn, glo, zain 3g, how to find piracy software and all sorts or rubbish that this forum is lately filling up with,

"inaugurate" is the actual word used,

"Globacom Limited plans to inaugurate a 9,500km submarine cable to link Africa and Europe on Wednesday, its Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel, has said"
ComputersRe: Globacom Submarine Cable - Glo-1 by tomcat: 2:19pm On Sep 13, 2010
according to today's gurdian, glo-1 is going to be commisioned this Wednesday,

hard to believe but let's see,

ComputersRe: Browse With 3.5g Moderms by tomcat: 11:11am On Sep 10, 2010
as far as i can tell, Etisalat in Nigeria has only EDGE and not UMTS/HSPA like glo and MTN,

this is the reason why your NG usb modem will have only EDGE,

any capable UMTS/HSPA unlocked usb stick should browse fine on HSPA.

So unless Etisalat NG deploys UMTS/HSPA even if you get usb stick capable of that (which all of them have) you won't be able to browse faster,
