A monster mom tried to soften her tale of setting a six-year-old daughter on fire in a voodoo ritual even as she pleaded guilty to the "barbaric" crime today — but a Queens judge would have none of it as he coaxed the truth from her and then sentenced the woman to 17 years behind bars. Ellis Kaplan Marie Lauradin Marie Lauradin, 29, pleaded guilty to assault last month for setting little Frantzcia Saintil on fire in a ritual called "Loa." But in a pre-sentencing report she changed her story, saying she was merely "rubbing [Frantzcia] down with alcohol because she was sick with fever when a nearby candle fell and set her on fire." "I’m giving you another opportunity to tell the truth," Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter quickly scolded as Lauradin began to tell another lie. "Did you douse your child with accelerant and light her on fire?" the judge said as he began to quiz Lauradin about what happened to the little girl. "Yes," she said through an interpreter. "The only demonic presence this child had to worry about was her mother," the judge said, lashing into her. Lauradin originally told police that she was cooking rice on the stove inside her Queens Village home on Feb. 4, 2009, and when she was moving the pot to a back burner as Frantzcia approached her from behind and hit her hand, causing her to spill the pot of boiling water on the child, according to prosecutors. eee26610-4ab7-012e-0812-123139099851 "This was a barbaric act not an accident," the judge said. "The victim loves her mother dearly , she still wants to be loved by this terrible excuse of a mother." Little Frantzcia’s horrific injuries — some of them permanent — didn’t match her mother’s story. "She has so much anger and suffers at school from kids making fun of her," prosecutor Leigh Bishop read from an email sent from Frantzcia’s foster mother, Sunday Cruz. Lauradin’s mother, Sylvenie Thessier, 70, stood by while 25 percent of her granddaughter’s body was covered with second- and third-degree burns — including her face. Thessier pleaded guilty to reckless assault earlier this year and was sentenced in April to 1 to 3 years in prison. The mother and daughter duo both face deportation to Haiti upon completion of their sentences. nypost |
Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case." They noted she didn't use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks. CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (CBS) -- A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas had some harsh words for a mother charged with spanking her own child before sentencing her to probation. "You don't spank children today," said Judge Jose Longoria. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children." Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case." They noted she didn't use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks. As part of the plea deal, Gonzales will serve five years probation, during which time she'll have to take parenting classes, follow CPS guidelines, and make a $50 payment to the Children's Advocacy Center. She was arrested back in December after the child's paternal grandmother noticed red marks on the child's rear end. The grandmother took the girl, who was two years-old at the time, to the hospital to be checked out. Gonzales who doesn't have custody of the child or her other two children, is trying to get them back, but until CPS feels she is ready the kids are living with their paternal grandmother. |
A million times. And i get caught everytime. We are just too tight, so much in love to quarrel about it |

Group MD of UBA TONY elumelu graduated with third class. Gani fawemi graduated with third class. It is rather shameful and retrogressing ,that what actually bother Nigerians is base discoursions and lame talks, and that is the bane of our development today. It is only in Nigeria that results and paper certificates matter more than competence, ingenuity and innovative ideas and ideals. This is the reason why the best hardly get the best of opportunity to give out qualitative service in Nigeria. Is it the class you obtained legitimately or the one you cheated to acquire? Is it the class that determines ones ability to appraise situations? Is it Nigerian kind of class and education system? Why do we imagine vain things and discuss idle issues. Does it really matter? |
My beloveth brethren, the sky is still your limit. You still have a very very good opportunity like a first class holder. You graduated with a third class doesen';t mean you must go and teach in some school, it doesen't mean you must have some squezy, old, boring job. Just trust and believe in God and widows and doors of opportunity will come flooding into your life. I wish i could talk to u. Cos i have testimonies to tell u. It is well with you. U could mail me if u want to talk. |
As evidenced by the Facebook Revolutions and ensuing Middle East turmoil, the Internet is a powerful tool and one capable of change. Of course, its eliminating citizen use of the Web under oppressive regimes has also yielded consequences. Perhaps inspired by these effects, the UN has declared the Internet a human right. A recent report titled “Report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression” declares that Internet access falls under freedom of expression. “The unique and transformative nature of the Internet not only [enables] individuals to exercise their right to freedom of opinion and expression, but also a range of other human rights, and to promote the progress of society as a whole.” Special rapporteur Frank La Rue also acknowledges that the Web has become too important a tool to asserting other human rights for people to be denied its use. “Given that the Internet has become an indispensable tool for realizing a range of human rights, combating inequality, and accelerating development and human progress, ensuring universal access to the Internet should be a priority for all states.” While the report may have especially poignant significance for Middle Eastern nations, it applies internationally. “Each state should thus develop a concrete and effective policy to make the Internet widely available, accessible, and affordable to all segments of population.” The US National Telecommunications and Information Association (NCIA) are collaborating with the FCC to analyze the state of broadband availability in the country. Recent findings revealed that a five to 10 percent of American cannot access Internet speeds that allow basic Web functions. So if you think this is merely a third-world problem or issue with oppressive governments, you’d be wrong. Of course, these events are why such a policy has become relevant: “The recent wave of demonstrations in countries across the Middle East and North African region has shown thekey role that the Internet can play in mobilizing the population to call for justice, equality, accountability and better respect for human rights. As such, facilitating access to theInternet for all individuals, with as little restriction to online content as possible, should be apriority for all States.” But is anything going to come out of this report? Last year, a BBC World Service study found that four out of five adults thought Internet access was a fundamental right, and participants from China, Mexico, Nigeria, Brazil, and South Korea were just among some of the countries that majorly agreed with this. Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says. There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community. Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.) What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away. "He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure. The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years--raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment. Although Brown's story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there's no way Brown's treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage "cure research," according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110603/us_yblog_thelookout/first-man-functionally-cured-of-hiv

I've heard a lot of ridiculous statements in my lifetime but this one is a record breaker. This is MADNESS! To actually come out and tell 150 million Nigerians that you deserve N12.5 Million per month should be a statement worthy of capital punishment. Even in United States, the average salary for senators was $174,000 for the ENTIRE YEAR (wikipedia, 2009) while the average salary for lecturers is about $94,000 per year. Not even twice as much. In Nigeria, on average, lecturers make about N150,000 per month. That is about 100 TIMES less. Upon all the money they make, Bankole still went to take a N10 Billion Naira PERSONAL loan on the credit of the Nigerian National Assembly. Now the money is missing and they are about to sweep the story under the ground since no one can produce the money. This people are just born thieves. They've been criminals from the day they were conceived in the womb. With all these, for all you Jonathan supporters, Jonathan is about to make Bankole a minister. How incredible? I support the ASUU strike. Yes, I said it. I support it. In fact, I am calling on student unions bodies, labour union, market women, bus drivers, and every Nigerian to join this strike and call these kleptocrats to order. That's my take on this issue! |
OWERRI – A large cache of assorted arms buried by Biafran soldiers during the 30-month Nigeria/Biafra war, which ended in 1970, has been found at Saint Patrick’s Secondary School, Ogbe, Ahiara, Ahiazu Mbaise local council area of Imo State. The shocking discovery included rifles, ammunition of various calibers, conventional live mortar bombs and the famous locally made Ogbunigwe and Ojukwu Buckets. Already, out-going Imo State governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, has described the discovery as “not only shocking but also clear evidence that some areas of the state remain unsafe for human habitation”. Ohakim, who was reacting during an interview in Owerri, said he was optimistic that the Federal Ministry of Defence will do everything possible to make the war-ravaged states safe for human habitation and activities. Vanguard gathered that a native of Ahiara, Mr. Cajethan Ndulaka, who raised the alarm, recalled that he was still a student of Saint Patrick’s Secondary School when the landmines, bombs, rifles, ammunition and other explosive remnants of the war were buried. It was equally gathered that as at the time of going to press, no fewer than 68 types of mortar bombs had been recovered from the dumps located in the school. “There are other arms dump sites in and around the school compound. These dangerous ordinances were buried in the college compound to prevent accidental explosion that would have killed the students,” Ndulaka recalled. Noting that the villagers did not know that the unexploded ordinances were potential threat to the lives of the students, even as they were buried in the school compound, Ndulaka also recalled that the school served as a barrack for Biafran soldiers. “The school served as a barrack for Biafran Army engineers, who made and stockpiled arms and ammunition in the school during the war.” |
Genevieve Nnaji’s career in acting may be on the high following speculation in Europe that she may be chosen as the next James Bond girl. ‘’I hear she's tipped to be the next Bond girl’’ Sarah Tetteh of the Daily Mirror in the UK recently said. If the deal materializes, Nnaji who is rumoured to be romantically linked with music star D'banj, may gross up to N500 million in her debut movie. The James Bond film series is a series of motion pictures, based on the fictional character of MI6 secret agent James Bond (code designation "007" . The UK M16 is the equivalent of Nigeria's SSS. Earlier films were based on novels and short stories, followed later by films with original storylines. The franchise remains one of the longest continually running film series in history, having been in ongoing production from 1962 to 2010 with a six-year hiatus between 1989 and 1995. The films have grossed just over $12 billion (in inflation adjusted dollars) at the worldwide box office, making it easily the highest-grossing film series ever (well ahead of both Star Wars and Harry Potter, which only appear ahead of Bond if inflation is ignored). At a recent movie event in France, Hollywood star Robert De Niro was spotted chatting up Nnaji. ‘’De Niro always has an eye for hot talent’’ one pundit said. Reports said the duo had kept in contact since then. Nnaji started her acting career as a child actress in the then popular television soap opera - Ripples at the age of 8. She also featured in several commercials some of which include Pronto beverage and Omo detergent. In 1998 at the age of 19 she was introduced into the growing Nigerian film industry with the movie - "Most Wanted". As an upcoming actress, trying to create a niche for herself, she went through various minor roles seeking for that opportunity for a break through. Her subsequent movies - 'Last Party'; Mark of the Beast; and Ijele (still considered to be one of her best epic performance to date) brought forth an icon to be loved and adored by many. Her name became a household name, her image the desire of every young girl. In 2002 she featured in the movie 'Sharon Stone' and her fame shot beyond the shores of Nigeria to Africa and several European countries. Nnaji appeals just as warmly to Kenyans and Liberians and South Africans and Ghanaians who avidly watch Nigerian home videos at home and abroad. Nnaji, thus, has led the market into new territories today. She took the extra step of projecting herself beyond Nigeria by having a website constructed back in 2003 and it was arguably the most trafficked Nigerian site on the Internet. In recognition of her immense contribution to the Nigerian film industry, Nnaji has been presented with numerous awards some of which have been in Dublin, London and America. She won best actress of the year in the 2001 City People Awards and in 2005 at the maiden outing of the prestigious African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). In 2004 a search for the face of Lux was embarked upon and out of several celebrities all over Africa Genevieve emerged with the highest votes. She graced several billboards and television stations with her enduring smile and personality. In 2004, she was contracted by a Ghanaian record label to produce an album which got immense attention locally and in several African countries. With several movies to her credit, and numerous fans around the world, in 2008, in a bid to give back to society, Nnaji launched her clothing line 'St. Genevieve' which donates a percentage of its proceeds to Charity - Orphanages. 2009 Genevieve made history by being the first Nigerian actress to be profiled on Oprah on "The most popular people around the world." Nnaji is quoted to be the highest paid and most desired actress in Nollywood today. A desire to be in contact touch with her fans after being absent from the web for about 6 years has resulted in the construction of a new site. This affords the actress the opportunity to keep in constant touch with her numerous fans the world over. The site is an interactive one and the heats have been outstanding. Her life personifies the saying "All things are possible if you will only believe." These words describe her: Determined, Focused, Humble and Creative. The best years of her career are still ahead. |
The celebrations at Government House Yenogoa last weekend over the victory of the PDP at the just concluded elections ended abruptly as it developed into a brawl between the Governor, his security details, on one hand, and a female guest on the other. A source at the party said trouble started when Governor Timipre Sylva, who was apparently inebriated, tried to manhandle a female guest who was at the party. The lady, whose identity could not be ascertained at press time, and Sylva, were having a conversation, when the lady raised her voice, which infuriated Sylva. Pointblanknews.com source hinted that the party which held on Saturday promised to be one of its kind, with endless supply of the finest Champagne, cognac and all the best liquor money could buy before hell broke loose. According to our source “ We were all looking forward to having a swell time. The guests made up of top government officials, politicians and the governors foot soldiers, were outnumbered at least three to one by daughters of eve who were clad in jaw-dropping attires, some leaving nothing to the imagination, and with a lot of alcohol trouble began to brew” It was further gathered that as the liquor flowed and conversations became more relaxed, with a few guests some guys making after party arrangements with some female guests, all hell was suddenly broke loose when Governor Timipre Sylva started exchanging hot words with a female guest who, screaming at the top of her voice, rained profanities and abuses on him. Recounted the source “The reaction of the lady apparently infuriated his Excellency. And before we knew it, he slapped her so hard that she staggered. Before she could recover his security details had pounced on her continuing from where the Governor had stopped. We all stood shell-shocked as we watched this drama unfold. The lady who also appeared a bit tipsy, continued to yell, knocking down bottles and glasses.” .Pointblanknews.com also learnt sequel to the drama, the party came to an end and the woman eventually subdued by the security details who dragged her away for further ‘interrogation’. Continued our source “At this point, the governor who had obviously had enough, and looking very embarrassed in the presence of his commissioners, top aides and party men, asked all guests to leave. What led to the altercation between the governor and the lady in question still remains a mystery. While some say her ranting was alcohol induced, others are saying there is more to the drama than the principal actors are letting on. They were some kind of disagreement, but the Governor felt embarrassed by the lady’s reaction, so he slapped her, which compounded the situation” |
Have you noticed that as a single guy in modern day Nigeria, its easier to get a visa out of the country than to find a single girl who is good? Let me define 'good' as used in this context: A good guy is a good guy. A good girl is one with a focus; with a vision and goals; educated, beautiful, fluent in English, witty, God fearing, possesses good culinary skills, has little or no nagging ability, has a great sense of humor, is liberal with the TV remote, dislikes Africa Magic, loves kids, is technologically savvy, etc. This kind of girl is hard to find. This is because most of these girls are already taken by the bad guys. I don't need to define the bad guys, we all know them. So that leaves us good guys stranded. A lot of us are still in the 'struggling zone' where we are still putting up in a one-bedroom room or squatting with a friend somewhere. We have a job that is barely keeping us alive and we still know what time to wake up to ensure we don't miss the BRT. Before you judge us and conclude that with such a lifestyle, we still need to struggle more, let me remind you that time waits for no man, especially one whose biological clock is reading '30'. So we decide to find other single ladies who will 'love us the way we are'. For where? If you can't afford Brazilian or at least Peruvian, or okay if it’s too bad, Vietnamese hair, forget it! If you can't buy and pay for her Blackberry BIS every month, forget it! If your daily diet is noodles and boiled egg (morning), noodles and pepper (night), forget it! You see, the good guys are in trouble! We can't do Yahoo-Yahoo because we will surely be caught (we are actually the 'mugus'). We can't push drugs, infact the only thing we've ever pushed is our friends 'jalopy' 504 that operates with the push-and-start mechanism. Our favorite solidarity song is MI's ‘One Naira’, because it gives us hope that someday a 'Waje' will come our way. While we look for one, people like 2face have 5, D'banj is trying to choose, Uti has numerous, it just seems hopeless for us 'good guys' We have gone to church to look for them, but even in church, some guys are giving N1000 offering, we are giving N500 tithe. No hope for us there! Sister Thelma will ask me after service, “Can you drop me at home after service?" Drop ke? I have already calculated how N50 will take me to Ikeja Along and how I shall leisurely stroll all the way to Toyin Street where I squat. Then some expect you to take them to the cinemas. Can't we just buy the N150 DVD collection with 7 other movies inside sef, go to my neighbors house and watch? I mean, its money saved. Some expect you to take them out all the time: Chicken Republic, KFC, Tastee Fried Chicken. Is it not THE SAME chicken? Can't we buy one, kill and fry? Pour plenty pepper and enjoy? Buy N60 coke, boil rice and that's it? I'm not stingy, just prudent! It’s sad though, but I know that where there's a will, there's a way. There really are no good or bad people, just people in different situations/circumstances, people with different mindsets and beliefs. We just have to find that 'perfect' match. They say "the beautiful ones are not yet born" so there is still hope for you. |
Most adults who have passed through great tribulation in life are always quick to affirm that there are evil powers and principalities. More often, they pity young people who, in their ignorance, see life as a bed of roses. However, in this age, it is not only adults that are faced with trials but also young people, especially those who are involved in various nefarious activities. Perhaps in their search for money and positions, people seek powers from the evil forces, which unconsciously initiate them into occultism. In another way, because of various challenges of life, which range from infertility, barrenness, poverty to failure, many have sought solutions in the dark places. Unfortunately, many people have died because they could not fulfil all the obligations to the powers of darkness. For those who live, they tell many stories about their ordeal in the hands of the agents of darkness and of course their deliverance by the power, which is above every other power, the God Almighty. A good example is Mr. Demola Moyosade and his wife, Funmilayo, who, in their quest to have their own baby after 12 years of marriage ran into the arms of evil doers and served as slaves for four years with the promise to get the fruit of the womb. Moyosade was born at Okeho, Oyo State. He studied at the Obafemi Awolowo University and later found love in Funmilayo, a beautiful lady from Iffo Amuro in Kogi State. They got married on October 16, 1999 in Kwara State and settled down in Lagos. They were blessed, as their pharmacy store in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area of Lagos, continued to expand. LIZEM Pharmacy became a household name at Ejigbo but the owners were tagged another name by the community. People called them the "Barren couple". They were alleged to have used their fertility for money ritual. "It was a harrowing experience. For 11 years, we ran from one hospital to another; from church to church; from mosque to mosque; from one herbalist to another but all our efforts proved abortive. Even though our business was booming, we lacked peace. The trauma was too much, especially from people who called us bad names because we could not give birth to a child," Moyosade said. In one of his moves to get help, Moyosade had visited a popular prayer mountain, in Ibadan, where he met a prophet who told him that his wife could never give birth and if she eventually became pregnant, she would die during labour. The prophecy frightened him but could not tell his wife, who had earlier advised him to marry another woman due to her inability to get pregnant. She recalled that particular incident, "After many years of waiting without pregnancy, I woke my husband up in the middle of the night and told him to marry another woman but that he should not divorce me. He refused to marry another woman." According to her husband,"we continued to pray and hope in God that one day my wife will be pregnant until I received a strange visitor in my shop one evening. The young man came with a cell phone and begged to charge the handset, which I obliged. In fact, I had to remove my own cell phone from the electric socket so that he could charge his own. I told him to come back before 10 p.m when we close to pick his handset, which he did," Moyosade said. However, the couple got into the dungeon of the evil power when the young man resurfaced the following day to laud Moyosade for his hospitality and promised to assist the couple to get out of childlessness. "On that fateful day, this young man asked me to buy a white keg and sponsor his transport fare to Osogbo to invoke the spirit of the Osun goddess to give us a child. I did all he wanted me to do. He left and later came back to invite me and my wife to a shrine in a thick forest located at Ota, Ogun State. He said that "mama osun" would like to see us," he said. During this period, the couple had stopped going to church. Their worship song had changed from Halleluyah to "Ore yeye Osun o". This was revealed when the couple arrived at the shrine at Ota and the Yeye Osun warned the wife, Funmilayo never to come to the place with the Holy Bible anymore. Moyosade explained that his visit to the shrine was mystical, adding that he could not describe how he got there with his wife. "On our way, a lady in white cloth appeared to us mysteriously and led us into a hut where we met an old woman of over 100 years of age surrounded by four other people in white garments. The old woman wore pure gold crown and shoes. She spoke gravely and motioned us to stay back. After, an invisible woman's voice erupted in the wood, telling us that she was busy doing something in the sea. The audible voice told us that we were her children and that we had promised her not to have any child until after 11 years of our marriage. "The woman however directed us to Osun grove in Osogbo. When we got to the river, as directed, we found a small calabash. When we opened it, we saw a N10 note and a voice came up again to tell us that the exact money was given to us during our wedding 12 years ago and that it was the cause of our barreness," he said. Asked if he actually received a N10 note as a wedding gift, Moyosade confirmed it, adding that some inscription was put on the note, which he showed to his pastor. "Then my Pastor told me to give the money out to beggars, which I did. I never knew it would resurface at Osun grove years after." Moyosade and his wife left Osun grove in joy with the assurance that their propitiation had been accepted by the goddess. On getting home, a voice echoed out of one of the rooms, instructing them to buy a white pigeon for her to eat. "That was where we got into serious trouble. The invisible woman told us to lock the room, never to open it anymore. She said, she would be living in the room and anytime she felt like talking to us, she would call us to move closer to the door of the room. I did everything. I spent a lot of money to buy pigeon birds. She would tell me to wrap the bird with black nylon and put behind my car. The bird always disappeared after a while in my car. Only my wife and I heard the strange voice despite the fact that we have relatives living with us. One day, she told me to leave my shop and go home that I would see a calabash on my bed. She asked me to eat whatever I found in the calabash, which I did. We communicated everyday. One day, she called me to wake up in the middle of the night and go to the gate that I would meet somebody who would deliver a message to me. I quietly went to the gate with my wife so that my landlord would not query us. I was surprised to see somebody in white garment. The person did not talk; he only stretched his hand towards me and put something on my hand," he said. Moyosade had been initiated but he refused to forget about his predicament. He continued to ask the invisible woman to give him a child. After almost four years of wining and dining with the devil without a child, Moyosade resolved to challenge the invisible woman. First, when his father was to pay him a visit in Lagos. Moyosade had urged the evil woman to quit the room so that his father could stay there but she refused. "She told me that my father could not sleep there that the room was waterlogged. She directed me to open it and see. When we opened the room, it was like a river, we quickly closed it. In one of our conversations, I had told her that I would like to tell my father about her. She obliged and after I narrated the story to my father, she praised me but my father cried for what I was passing through," he said. Moyosade, however, broke the evil jinx when he challenged the invisible woman to tell him the kind of offence he had committed against her that had made him barren. "I told her that I was ready to commit the worse offence by disobeying her and going back to the living God. I dusted my Bible and went back to church with my wife. I refused to communicate with the woman again. I met my pastor when he came to paint my shop. The pastor, Reverend Samuel Bodunde of the Open Door Evangelical Ministry, Ejigbo had suddenly visited my shop, saying God had directed him to paint it free of charge. After I refused to obey the invisible voice, I went to worship in the church and told the pastor all my problems. We began to pray again. Every Monday and Wednesday, we did prayer in my house, including vigils. We visited prayer mountains and gradually, the invisible voice began to fade away," he said. However, when joy finally smiled on the couple last year, the fear of death ran through the mind of Moyosade who was still living with the prophecy that his wife would die in the course of giving birth. As the wife, Funmilayo put it, "As usual, we slept together and I went to one of the branches of our pharmacy store in the morning. I was expecting to see the monthly menstruation but I missed it. I conducted the pregnancy test, it was positive. I did it again, it was positive and I quickly sent a text message to my husband who refused to believe. When we arrived at home in the night, he conducted the test himself and it was positive. I did it everyday for more than a week to confirm. We later called the pastor who instructed us not to tell anybody." But another problem occurred when the scan result showed that though the woman was carrying a foetus, two fibroids growing with it. "We deduced new prayer points. But each time I look at my wife, what I saw was a dead person. The prophecy I had received still traumatised me. But with prayer we were able to subdue the fear." He noted that as the pregnancy grew, the fibroid disappeared until February 28, 2011 when his wife was due to give birth. "I had to drive her to the hospital in my car. I had the fear that I would lose her as said by the prophet. Because she was already 38 years old at the time, the doctor advised me that we did Caesarean. I became more frightened that with Caesarean, the woman might lose blood and eventually give up. I began to think of where I would bury her body. Either at my newly bought site or where, I was ruminating but she did not know my thought towards her. I was at the hospital with my pastor and his wife praying as the doctor performed the surgery. About two hours later, a nurse came to congratulate me and asked me to come and see my baby. I asked about my wife but she would not answer me. Later the doctor came out and told me to bring something from home. I ran back home, waiting to hear that my wife was dead. But I give glory to God, she lives with the baby. Bad prophecy is not my portion," he said. "It was a long battle because the devil did not want the family to have a child. I was ready to sacrifice myself for this family to live and rejoice. At a point, I thought I would lose either of my wife or child in the course of intervening for the Moyosades. But God took all the glory," he said. Though Pastor Bodunde refused to mention why N10 note must be given to a member of Moyosade's family, he said that the yoke of barrenness was broken on the day the money got to the hands of the person. "Believe me, I did not know that it would be possible but the woman conceived in that same month because the anointing of God breaks all yoke. Today, the couple lives happily with a bouncing baby boy, Olorunjuwonlo, Daniel, Adesina, Opeyemi Moyosade. |

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has pegged daily cash withdrawal and lodgments by individuals at N150, 000 and N1 million by corporate organisations. The policy, which kicks off June 2012, is intended to curb the dominance of cash in the economy and its implication for cost of cash management to the banking industry, security and money laundering. CBN Director, Currency Operations Department, Muhammad Nda, said the bank took the decision after a combined meeting with the Bankers’ Committee where it was agreed that the policy be adopted to reduce the high usage of cash, moderate the cost of cash management and encourage the use of electronic payment channels. The CBN said that from the above date, organisations that make cash transactions above the limits will be charged a penal fee of N100 per thousand and N200 per thousand respectively for amounts above the cumulative limits. Also, contravention of this policy will attract a fine of five times the amount that the bank waives as a first offender. Besides, further contraventions will cost the bank 10 times the charges waived. Also, third party cheques above N150,000 will not be eligible for encashment over the counter as value for such cheques will be received through clearing. "If a bank allows third party cheque encashment, it shall be liable to a sanction of 10 per cent of the face value of the cheque or N100,000, whichever is higher. Banks will cease cash in transit lodgment services rendered to merchant-customers from June 1, 2012. In this regard, customers could engage the services of the CBN licensed cash-in-transit (CIT) companies to aid cash movement to and from their banks at mutually agreed terms and conditions. Contravention of this policy shall attract a fine of N1 million per specie movement," Nda said in a statement. According to him, the policy will initially be enforced in Lagos State, Federal Capital Territory Port Harcourt, Kano and Aba in the first instance while it will be extended to other parts of the country at a date to be determined by the Bankers’ Committee. Furthermore, to achieve interoperability of local currency Point of Sale transactions, no card scheme, foreign or local, will operate exclusive acquirer agreement or contract in the country with effect from June 1, 2011. "Any payments scheme, processor, switching company, service provider or bank that contravenes this policy may be suspended for a minimum of one month by the CBN as a processor, switching company. This also applies to private and public sector transactions, all financial institutions including Deposit Money Banks, Savings and Loans, Mortgage and Microfinance Banks," he added. The compliance with the policy according to the banking watchdog, will be monitored by the Banking Supervision Department and the Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department with appropriate sanction applied to erring institutions. The CBN promised to make general announcements and carry out public awareness programmes and individual banks are expected to do same. "The affected customers of banks should be informed in good time by the banks with clear advice on alternative electronic payment channels available to them," said the CBN. |

The Imo State governorship election lived up to its billing, with tension and drama, and has been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Before then, Governor Ikedi Ohakim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) were running head to head. Okorocha led in 12 local government areas (LGAs) while Ohakim won in 10. There were issues with results from Ngor Okpala, Egbema and Oguta local government areas leading to outright cancellation by INEC officials. Elections were allegedly not concluded in these areas. The tension-soaked election had witnessed premature celebrations by APGA supporters. Before the cancellation scores of pre-emptive youths, ostensibly APGA supporters were poised for a showdown with INEC officials, sensing underhand manipulations in favour of the PDP candidate, during the break. INEC officials sensing danger promptly put off further announcement of result and declared the election inconclusive. It was not clear last night when elections would be re-conducted in the affected areas. Scores of APGA supporters had besieged the state headquarters of the INEC in Owerri for the results. The supporters began to converge on the area in the early hours of the day but were restricted to a section by combat-ready mobile police and military personnel. The expectant supporters intermittently erupted in wild jubilation as the results gradually trickled in, favouring the party. The crowd, which waited patiently in the hot weather, provided a ready market for hawkers of iced sachet water, popularly called “pure water,” yoghourt and ice-cream. Other items on display included banana, groundnuts, breadfruits, mangoes, oranges and snacks, such as meatpie and gala. There was heavy presence of security men around the premises located on the busy Port Harcourt Road and motorists were diverted to other routes by stern-looking soldiers. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the jubilation later spread into the Owerri metropolis as “false” news rent the air that APGA’s candidate in the election, Chief Okorocha, had won the election. Jubilant residents, mainly youths, roadside hawkers, artisans, tricycle operators and taxi drivers, men and women went into celebration, flying APGA flags. Some of the youths who danced round some of the major streets of the city, carrying Okorocha’s campaign handbills and large-size posters, were however, dispersed along the Wetheral Road. |

An Indonesian fisherman who is "half man half tree" has been offered new hope of recovery by an American doctor - and Vitamin A. 32-year-old Dede, who lives in a remote village in Indonesia with his two children, feared that he would be killed by the tree-like growths that cover his body. Known locally as 'Tree Man' his condition has baffled local doctors for 20 years. He has root like structures growing out of his body - branches that can grow up to 5cm a year and which protrude from his hands and feet, and welts covering his whole body. In an attempt to earn a living to support his family, he is part of a circus troupe, displaying his Tree Man limbs along with others afflicted with skin deformities in 'freak' shows. The former fisherman was the subject of a documentary "Half Man Half Tree", part of the "My Shocking Story" series on Discovery Channel TV. Dede's story began when wart-like "roots" started growing out of his arms and feet after he cut his knee in a teenage accident. The medical world was completely baffled. The welts spread rapidly across his body and soon he was not able to carry out ordinary household tasks. Dede was sacked from his job and deserted by his wife. He has been raising two children, now in their late teens, in poverty. He is resigned to the fact that local doctors have no cure for his condition. To try to support his family he even joined a local "freak show", parading in front of a paying audience along with victims of other peculiar diseases. While he has the support of his extended family, he has frequently been a target of ridicule and abuse in rural fishing village where he lives. But now new hope has emerged for Dede after an American dermatology expert flew out to his home village south of the capital Jakarta. Dr. Anthony Gaspari of the University of Maryland claims to have identified Dede's condition, and has proposed a treatment that could completely change his life. Following the testing of samples of the lesions and Dede's blood, Dr. Gaspari says his condition is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This is a fairly common infection that usually causes small warts to develop on sufferers. Dede's problem is that he has a rare genetic fault that impedes his immune system. This means his body is unable to contain the warts. According to Dr. Gaspari, the virus was able to "hijack the cellular machinery of his skin cells", instructing them to produce huge amounts of the substance that caused the tree-like growths known as "cutaneous horns" on both his hands and feet. The doctor became involved in the case through the Discovery Channel documentary, and he is convinced that Dede's condition can be largely cleared up by a daily doses of a synthetic form of Vitamin A, which has been demonstrated to stop the growth of warts in severe cases of HPV. Dr. Gaspari said that Dede's warts should reduce in size to the point where he can use his hands. He said he had never seen anything like this in his entire career. http://www.thatsweird.net/news48.shtml
