White smoke billowing from the Sistine Chapel chimney has announced to the world that cardinals gathered inside have elected a new Pope to head the Catholic Church.
Crowds in St Peter's Square cheered and bells rang out as the smoke appeared.
The name of the new Pope is expected to be announced shortly.
He will replace Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down last month saying he was no longer strong enough to lead the Church.
The 115 cardinals have been in isolation since Tuesday afternoon, and held four inconclusive votes before electing a Pope.

Most of the posts up here smacks of ignorance, poverty stricken mentality and envy of medical doctors.and FYI ,doctors are not begging to work. I know 2 of the sacked doctors who are consultants that are practically being begged by their home states to take up appointment in their teaching hospital with official cars attached and they asked to be given time to think about it .its a shame fashola(whom I admire) is making this stewpid decision.this is just political suicide for him.am sure the PDP bigwigs are partying now cos he is one of their biggest threats.anytime he now thinks of contesting for any national position, they would flash this incident before him, even NLC would use it against him.
The people am sorry for are not the patients that have "typhoid and malaria" , no not them .they are those patients that require specialist care, the kidney failure patient that require twice weekly dialysis,that middle aged woman with breast cancer that has been on chemotherapy,that elderly man that has prostrate cancer that has been booked for surgery,that premature baby that could survive if placed in an incubator under the care of a peadiatrician.can a neophyte (locum) doctor manage these ?? The answer is NO !! Even if you give him the best equipments in the whole world.these are consultants that trained for about 8 years post graduation and people are here ranting sack them, sack them...replace them with who abeg.
Another implication of this is that LASUTH will loose its accreditation and can no longer train medical students who they already have collected 400K from.
Truth is that fashola is gradually realizing the folly in his decision and is now saying the sack is grade level 13 below(when he has served everybody with sack letter) because he has realized he can't replace these people.... The doctors I believe will always have the last laugh, we are all watching .
