AKSG Condemns Maltreatment of Workers By Foreign Firm

Akwa Ibom State Government says it will not tolerate any engagement of the services of Akwa Ibom workers without fulfilling the globally accepted conditions of employment whether in the public or private sector.

Reacting to allegations of flagrant disrespect and non compliance to rules of engagement of workers by Sterling Global Petrochemical Company, a foreign oil prospecting firm, the government says it will stop at nothing to ensure that the dignity of Akwa Ibom is respected, and that no one is exploited while diligently going about his duties.

The State Government's position was expressed by the Director General of Government Business, and former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Russia and the Belarus, Chief Assam Assam,SAN, who is the chairman of a mediation committee between the erring oil firm and the affected communities in Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo local government areas.

Chief Assam frowned at the alleged insensitivity of the firm in their dealings with the people, and condemn in totality their resort to intimidation using the military, noting that the government will not accept any act that reduces Akwa Ibom people to second class citizens.

He said Sterling Global ought to learn from the labour friendly disposition of Governor Umo Eno, and be a good corporate citizen of the State, failure of which the State Government will revoke the land given to the company to operate in Akwa Ibom State.

"We cannot accept this in any part of Akwa Ibom State. You cannot reduce our people to slaves in their land. We must see the nominal roll of your employees. We must know exactly what you are doing so that people will not import arms into our State in the name of bringing in machines and equipment.

“In fact, as it stands now, we do not even know who you are working for or who is working for you because other firms are equally involved. We cannot put the people at such risk," Chief Assam fumed, and directed that the representatives of the oil firm be compelled to clear the air.

Commissioner for Labour and Productivity Mr. Aniefiok Nkom said Sterling Global has shown great irresponsibility it its operations, with total disregard to court orders and turning down of invitations by the State Government to mediate in the lingering issues.

Executive Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Okon Okon disclosed that Sterling Global has neither paid a dime as tenament tax nor PAYE tax to the State Government, as their operations are shrouded in secrecy, giving them out as people with the a deliberate mission on tax evasion.

Transition committee chairmen for Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo local government areas lamented the agony Sterling Global has thrown their people into and commended the State Government for coming to their rescue, as the situation was becoming unbearable and lethal.

AKWA IBOM GOVT BROKERS PARTNERSHIP DEAL WITH INDONESIA ON AGRICULTURE, AVIATION, ORS

Governor Umo Eno's ARISE Agenda in Akwa Ibom State has continued to present prospects that draw the attention of the international community to the various sectors of the State's economy.

Latest of the prospects is the relationship brokered between the Republic of Indonesia and the subnational government of Akwa Ibom State for collaborations in the areas of agriculture, aviation, infrastructure, education, technology and trade.

Governor Umo Eno brokered the partnership when he played host to the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, AVM Usrah Hendra Harahap, who was on a courtesy visit to him at Government House , Uyo.

Welcoming the Indonesian Ambassador on behalf of the government and people of the State, Governor Eno expressed appreciation to the Ambassador for the interest of his government in Nigeria and by extension, Akwa Ibom, expressing confidence that the interaction marks the beginning of a long lasting relationship between the Republic of Indonesia and a subnational in Nigeria.

Governor Eno noted that with the current food crisis occasioned by the withdrawal of subsidy on petrol by the federal government, prioritizing agriculture, including the blue economy and other areas that would enhance food sufficiency has become necessary, hence the need to partner the Indonesian government that is already doing well in those areas.

"It is note worthy that agriculture contributes about 12.8% of our GDP, employing about 47% of the entire nation's workforce. So the global thing right now for us as a nation, particularly with the high cost of living associated with the removal of subsidy and other economic issues, is agriculture.

"Agriculture actually is on the front burner of our people right now and we know, like you also mentioned in your address, Indonesia has done very well in the area of agriculture. We'll like to partner with you, " Gov Eno said.

He further expressed appreciation for the offer by the Indonesian Ambassador to support the operation of Ibom Air with a CN235 aircraft and assured that he will confer with the management of the airline over the proposal.

In the area of technology, the governor said Akwa Ibom will particularly appreciate collaboration in the area of electric vehicles which, according to him, Indonesia was already doing very well too.

"In this era of carbon credit, we will like to work with countries and organizations that will help us with electric vehicles. So I look forward to personally working with you on that. We'll also like to see some cultural exchange between Akwa Ibom and Indonesia to build up our tourism potential," he added.

In his address, the Indonesian Ambassador, Usrah Hendra Harahap, stated that his visit underscores Indonesia's unwavering commitment to strengthening her diplomatic ties with Nigeria which, since 1965, has witnessed steady growth, acknowledging the significant contributions of Akwa Ibom State in fostering the relationship.

Affirming the desire of his government to further expand and deepen collaborations with Akwa Ibom, Mr Harahap lauded the state's potential for collaboration with Indonesia in several key sectors and stated that Indonesia remains committed to fostering a broad-based partnership with Akwa Ibom and welcomes the state government to explore potential collaborations in other sectors, such as education, healthcare, and trade.

"I would like to express Indonesia's keen interest in exploring new avenue of collaboration with the government of Akwa Ibom State: Indonesia is proud to offer the CN235 aircraft to Ibom Air. This versatile and reliable aircraft can significantly enhance domestic and regional connectivity, fostering economic growth and tourism in Akwa Ibom State.

"Indonesia has made significant advancements in coal-based fertilizer technology. We are eager to explore the potential application of this technology in Akwa Ibom, offering a cost-effective and efficient approach to enhancing agricultural productivity while promoting environmental sustainability, " he added.

10,000 A'IBOM WOMEN TO BENEFIT FROM STATE GOVT, EDC PARTNERSHIP ON CAPACITY BUILDING

The entrepreneurial development thrust of the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda of Governor Umo Eno led-administration in Akwa Ibom State has received a boost as ten thousand Akwa Ibom women have been selected for entrepreneurial training and capacity building, with support services to establish Small And Medium Scale Enterprises, SMEs, on completion of the training.

This is the fallout of the new partnership agreement signed , Friday, by Akwa Ibom State Government with the Lagos State based Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), on the Ibom Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development (Ibom-LED) Programme, at Government House, Uyo.

Speaking at a brief ceremony to sign the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno described the partnership as a welcomed development that will yield mutual benefits, expressing the readiness of the State government to work with the Lagos based firm to ensure the attainment of the A.R.I.S.E. Agenda goal of capacity building and entrepreneurial development.

He commended the Ibom-LED's interpretation of his administration's human capital development vision, affirming that the new capacity building programme for 10,000 women in addition to the 400 youths already undergoing the Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme at the Ibom-LED training centre are indications that the programme was already meeting the desired purpose.

On the imperative of the partnership for the attainment of his administration's goal, Governor Eno explained that it was not enough to provide capital for people to get into businesses ignorantly and harped on the need for training on business ventures for optimal level of confidence and reliability, considering the critical roles SMEs play in creating employment and boosting the economy.

"The vision for Ibom-LED is to raise entrepreneurs and we also want to support them, but it's not just enough to give people money. You have to train them and make them reliable.

"So this partnership for me is critical. I thank the EDC for this partnership and ask for more of this support so as to realise the visions that we have set out and at the end of it, Ibom-LED can truly say we have developed our SMEs. We can't get it wrong with SMEs", he stated.

According to him, with Ibom-LED, young Akwa Ibom people would develop their talents in managing human and material resources and become better leaders, than venturing into politics ill-equipped for leadership.

The Ibom-LED Team Leader and Managing Director of Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation, AKICORP, Pastor Imo-Abasi Jacob, explained that the Enterprise Development Centre is an arm of the Pan Atlantic University, formerly known as Lagos Business School and expressed optimism that with the goodwill expressed so far in granting Ibom-LED access to their capacity building programme the state will be better for it.

The Head of the EDC Legal Team who doubles as Head of it's Alumni Relations and Support Services, Barr. Nnenna Ugwu, expressed satisfaction with the seriousness of the Umo Eno led- government in human capital development, saying that their offer in entrepreneurial training for 10,000 young women in Akwa Ibom State through Transforming Nigerian Youths Programme, was initiated in partnership with Mastercard Foundation.

On the criteria for selection, Barrister Ugwu explained that the programme was meant for young women between the ages of 18 and 35 who are already in business and aspiring to grow, adding that beyond the training, the programme has provision for support services for participants.

NIGERIA’S AMBASSADOR TO ANGOLA COMMENDS GOV EMMANUEL ON BEST GOVERNOR MEDIA AWARD

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has been honoured as the sub-National Governor with the best economic blueprint in Africa, with a call that other sub-nations in Africa emulate his leadership and development drive.

The call was made by the Nigerian Ambassador to Angola, Prof Monique Ekpong, while presenting the 2022 African Regional Magazine Awards to the Akwa Ibom State Governor in Angola.

Prof. Ekpong said as a Nigerian she was proud with the accomplishments of Governor Udom Emmanuel which have made the State one of the best destinations in Nigeria.

“I don’t just commend Governor Emmanuel for his achievements because of the video clip we just watched, but as one who has passed through the state and have seen these projects personally”, Prof Ekpong said, adding that as a Nigerian she was proud of the Akwa Ibom Story.

Receiving the award, Governor Udom Emmanuel maintained that he is changing the narrative of development in Akwa Ibom by turning the status of the state from a civil service hub into an economic hub and a preferred destination.

Represented by his Special Assistant on Research and Documentation, Mr. Essien Ndueso, the Governor said he is making development sustainable through industrialization and infrastructural expansion.

This, the Governor’s aide maintained, “was realized through his initial Five-Point governing document of Job Creation, Infrastructural Consolidation and Expansion, Poverty Alleviation, Economic and Political Inclusion and Wealth Creation, which today has been condensed into the 8-Point Completion Agenda”.

Mr Ndueso insisted that the Governor in realizing that the key drivers of industrialization are the quality of infrastructure on the ground and, of course, peace and security, embarked on the strategic and careful plans to provide world-class infrastructure through economically viable roads, development of the Ibom Seaport Project and the spectacular innovations in the aviation sector.

“Ibom Air started with three CRJ 900 Bombardier aircrafts, and under a year, increased the fleet to five and earlier last year, added two new Airbus A220- 300 series, thus bringing the fleet to 7. As we speak, two more A320 Airbuses are now in the country and would soon join the fleet of the state owned airline”.

He noted that the State now has a network of massive roads, and numerous industries and the engagements of youths in these industries and other emerging economic ventures have occasioned the success of the fight against youth restiveness.

Speaking on the theme of the 2022 African Regional Journal Fair, Mr Ndueso said that the diversity of the African continent should not be a source of division and hatred among Africans, insisting that greedy and selfish leaders attempt to play on the emotions of the gullible populace to insitigate religious, ethnic and racial wars.

He maintained that with the right leadership, and sound institutional framework, the African continent has what it takes to be truly independent after several decades of freedom from colonialists.

“During the colonial era, respective African countries united to fight against the evil of imperialism and lamented that diversity are used as instruments by leaders to create artificial instability.

He urged participants at the fair to take back to their respective countries, the message of peace and unity as a panacea to lift the continent from its present situation.

In her welcome remarks, the publisher of the West African Regional Magazine and The African Regional Journal, Amb. Rossette Aloy Squire harped on the need for Africa to identify its unique talents and be deliberate about celebrating irrespective of their countries, sex, race or age.

Squire lauded the significant contributions of Governor Udom Emmanuel in putting his state on the African development map and investing on huge beneficial projects for the future of his state and the African region.

Others honoured were the President of Angola, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, Angolan-Portuguese motorsports racing superstar, Rui Pinto de Andrade, Nigeria’s ambassador to Angola, Prof Monique Ekpong, as well as the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, among others.

In the delegation from Akwa Ibom State, was the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Aniekeme Finbarr who received an award on behalf of the State as the 2022 Most Progressive Sub Nation in Africa.

He later presented copies of Impact Magazine, a publication of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information and Strategy, to guests at the event.

The African Regional Journal Forum and Trade Fair featured presentations from the Director, Unicontrol, LLC, USA, Mr Gabriel Ngendabanga, the President, ECOWAS chamber Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Angola (CCIAE), Mr Ablay Diop, the Chairman Angola-Nigeria Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Madam Tangyalamba de Oliveira Veloso.
The event was organized in partnership with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Angola-Nigeria headed by Tangyalamba Veloso

If I may ask which if the industry have you visited in the state that is not working

Since my governor has tried industrialisation and it's not working out, I think we should try tourism and ICT next.

That useless worship centre might just be one of the best tourism hotspots. Since the country is too religious, any religious activities should hold there with huge rental fees.

Benefits: since it's one of the finest and most secured part of Uyo, the conveners and visitors will enjoy the best of beauty and security.

More high-rise should spring up along Udo Udoma.
Our beach front esp Ibeono should be given a retouch.
We should have a park that will upgraded version of Port Harcourt pleasure Park. I visited PPK and was wowed.

A monorail track should be established. Even if its not necessary now, it will save the state of demolishing structures along its path in the next 50 years.

Another outdoor field should be created along that ring road by Nwaniba. That route will be the most developed route in Aks. The field can just be coconut farm interplanted with flowers.

AKWA IBOM STATE IS ONE OF AFRICA’S TOP CLEANEST STATES

Akwa Ibom State has been named as one of Africa’s cleanest subnationals.

In a listing by the highly influential online site that tracks environmental and tourism issues ‘Inside Africa’, tagged “Top African Cleanest Cities, 2022” Akwa Ibom State, (Uyo) was the only state in Nigeria named in the report, thus cementing the state’s already well known definition as “Nigeria’s Cleanest State, as well as the Nation’s Best Kept Secret.”

The report also listed Kigali, the Rwandan Capital as a top African Cleanest City alongside, Cape Town, South Africa, Tunis, Tunisia, Port Luis, Mauritius, Johannesburg, South Africa, Nairobi, Kenya, Kumasi, Ghana, Gaborone, Botswana. Dares Salaam, Tanzania, and Windhoek, Namibia.

The listing of Akwa Ibom State in the report is a manifestation of the great developmental strides, especially in tourism and infrastructure, and the huge resources expended by the Governor Udom Emmanuel led- administration in preserving the environment and making the state livable and free of environmental hazards.

The efforts of the government in this regard, saw the earlier conferment of the award by Clean Up Nigeria, last year on the state as Nigeria’s cleanest State, an award that was received by Prince Akpan Ikim, the Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) which, was later subsequently presented to the Governor Emmanuel on December 20th, last year, during an enlarged State Executive Council Meeting, by the Sir, Charles Udoh, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Solid Minerals.

The State has consistently won for five years in a row, the award as the nation’s cleanest state.

Akwa Ibom State, is arguably the Nation’s most preferred choice for conferences, retreats, seminars and other major events and only recently, a multibillion dollars drainage project measuring more than 10 kilometers was constructed in the State capital as part of Governor Emmanuel’s policy to keep the State safe for investments to thrive.

With Ibom Air, the award winning airline, and the first of such an airline owned by a subnational in Africa, dominating the Nigerian aviation industry, coupled with a peaceful, safe and secure environment, a rich range of cuisines and a great and hospitable people, Akwa Ibom State continues to symbolize what the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, (GCON) said recently at the flag-off of the Presidential Campaign as everything that Nigeria should be.

PDP READY TO GET IT RIGHT IN 2023 - GOV EMMANUEL

The promptness of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to set up its campaign structure is an indication of the party’s readiness to get it right in the upcoming general elections.

Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Chairman, PDP Presidential Elections Campaign Council, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, made the assertion while fielding questions with Government House Correspondents at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, upon his return from Abuja where he attended the inauguration of the Campaign Council.

The inauguration exercise less than 24hours after Nigeria's election umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, lifted the embargo on electioneering activities, makes the PDP first to unveil its machinery for full-fledged campaigns for the nation's topmost post.

Governor Emmanuel, earlier in his acceptance speech after the inauguration as Chairman of the PDP Presidential Council, assured PDP faithful on the return of peace to the party and explained that the 600-man council was set to work across all units and ensure victory for the party.

At the airport, Mr Emmanuel insisted that, “that PDP remains Nigeria's only party for everybody and is ready to get it right this time.

"This is the only party we have in Nigeria, forget associations, forget unions, forget alliances. Also, PDP is party for everybody but this time around they decided to look at people like us who still have the energy to run around and that means a whole lot. I think we are getting it right this time around," he asserted.

The PDP Campaign Council Chairman explained that what is needed to execute the election is human resources which he reaffirmed, the party has in abundance across every section of the country.

"We don't need more than one resource which is human beings because we are everywhere all over the country. That's all we need for elections, the people, and we have people everywhere and I think we will win", Emmanuel asserted.

He expressed appreciation to the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, the entire structure of PDP as well as the candidate and running mate of the party, for the confidence in him and others, urging the committee to deliver victory for the party.

He however, acknowledged that the final victory is dependent on the will of God and the choice of the people, saying "our duty is to campaign to get Nigerians to vote but victory comes from God.

“You only campaign with your power of persuasion hoping that Nigerians will vote then God gives victory", he added.

200,000 BPD REFINERY TO COMMENCE PRODUCTION IN AKWA IBOM, 2024

The industrialization policy of Governor Udom Emmanuel is gathering steam with more investments berthing Akwa Ibom state through the foreign direct investment programme of the Administration.

The latest is the signing of a progress acknowledgment statement between BUA Group and Axens of France for the former’s proposed 200,000barrels per day refinery in Akwa Ibom State.

With a target of between three to four years for construction, the BUA Group has noted that the refinery is expected to be operational by 2024 all things being equal.

Speaking at the ceremony earlier this week, Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu stated that the refinery, when fully operational, would reduce the huge cost of transporting crude oil offshore, refining it and bringing it back into the country.

Rabiu added that the decision to site the refinery in Akwa Ibom – Southern Nigeria was strategic due to the huge availability of raw materials and its proximity to export petroleum products to regional countries.

He added that the multi-billion-dollar integrated 200,000 bpd refinery and petrochemicals plant will be producing Euro-V fuels and Polypropylene for the domestic and regional markets.

BUA explained that Axens was selected, after a comprehensive process, for its advanced technology licenses, basic engineering, catalysts and adsorbents, proprietary equipment, training and technical services.

The French President, Emmanuel Macron commended the Chairman of BUA Group, Rabiu, for his commitment to the development of lasting relationships between French and Nigerian businesses.

Represented by Franck Riester, the French Minister for Foreign Trade and Attractiveness, Marcon invited Abdul Samad to the “Choose France Summit” and said his administration is ever ready to support people-oriented and developmental projects in Nigeria.

“I am very pleased to see how committed Abdul Samad Rabiu is for the refinery and in the space of philanthropy,” Macron said.

Agriculture / Agriculture And Entrepreneurial Development by Torahlinks: 11:18am On Jan 06, 2021
AGRICULTURE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENT

Since assumption of office in 2015, Governor Udom Emmanuel has continued to bestow on Agriculture its pride of place as a top burner sector of the economy by ensuring that there are more tractors in the farms than luxury SUVs on the streets.

The measure is geared towards food sufficiency and security for the people, as well as a means of achieving the Governor's vision that food consumed in Akwa Ibom State are home grown and more so, in abundance for exportation. To this end, Governor Udom Emmanuel opened up the hinterlands with high quality roads networks to create access to the rich agricultural prospects across the State. This redeeming wind blew across Ini, Obot Akara, Uruan, Oron, Oruk Anam among others, bringing to the state flourishing agricultural produce ranging from fruits to vegetables, to sea foods, poultry, livestock and grains. The critical investment has given rise to the boom in agricultural activities in the state.

To further buttress the Agricultural sector, Governor Udom Emmanuel constituted supervisory and coordinating Committees, such as: the Technical Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency, and the Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, comprising indigenous egg heads to work hand in gloves with the State Ministry of Agriculture and Women Affairs for coordination of Agricultural activities.

The collaboration has successfully facilitated agricultural Renaissance in the state catalysed by the provision of farming implements, soft interest-free loans, fertilizers, extension services and improved seedlings to farmers. So far, Governor Udom Emmanuel has distributed over 500,000 improved cocoa seedlings to Cocoa farmers in the state, supplied improved maize seedlings and cassava cuttings as well as improved plantain suckers and citrus to farmers and interested members of the public.

It is worthy of mention that, Cocoa production has received special attention with the training of farmers on modern skills of cocoa maintenance scheme, known as pruning, and just recently, Governor Udom Emmanuel distributed Agro Chemicals –NAPSAC Sprayers to all cocoa farmers in addition to the provision of a drying machine to enhance cocoa processing. The initiative has increased the successes and prosperity of the state in cocoa production, making Akwa Ibom to suddenly stand out as the largest cocoa producer, with the best variety of Cocoa in Nigeria.

Presently, Akwa Ibom boasts of a boom in vegetables like cucumber and tomatoes, with the establishment of large green houses in the state, as well as a boost in staple food like Garri with the construction of numerous cassava processing mills across the state, which has resulted in the crash of the market price of Garri.

Governor Udom Emmanuel has also invested handsomely in rice production in the state with the facilitation of the construction of Rice mills in the State namely the Ibom Agricon Rice at Ini Local Government Area, the Sacam Rice Mill at Ikono, and the Ibom Golden Rice in Ibiono. The Governor has not only distributed improved rice seedlings to farmers but has also ensured the provision of mechanized farm implements to assist in rice cultivation.

With the dwindling revenue in crude oil, and the emerging fortunes of Coconut oil as the new cash cow in the global market, Governor Udom Emmanuel strategically dived into Coconut production with the cultivation of 11,000 hectares of Coconut Plantatain which proceeds will feed the Coconut Oil Refinery in the state. Of added advantage to Agricultural development is the fertilizer blending plant in the state, which blends fertilizer to meet the needs of the local farmers.

Furthermore, the Governor is gearing at making Akwa Ibom State the poultry nerve center of the South-South and South - East regions, with the completion of an ultra-modern world class hatchery for day old chicks at Mbiaya Uruan. The hatchery has a poultry farm for off-takers and processing of matured birds for poultry meat.

With his vision to build a vibrant society driven by entrepreneurs, Governor Udom Emmanuel embarked on measures geared at stimulating the local economy by encouraging small and medium scale enterprises in agro-based and agro-alied ventures. Such measures prompted the Governor to commence a 3bn Naira revolving loan facility for traders and small business owners as well as exposed them to an interest free loan ranging from 100,000 to 5million Naira. This is in addition to the interest free loan to 2000 cassava and corn farmers in the state.

Still in pursuit of a vibrant and entrepreneurial-driven economy, Governor Udom Emmanuel has directed his attention to what could be termed "the low hanging fruits". To this end, the Governor focuses on such ventures with less capital involvement but with much profits margin and huge turnover. Such ventures are readily identifiable in the agricultural sector, small and medium scale enterprises as well as in skill acquisition and empowerment.

In this regard, Governor Udom Emmanuel has invested maximally in entrepreneural development to the extent of giving it a legal backing with the setting up of Akwa Ibom Micro Enterprises and Development Agency and signing the Akwa Ibom Micro Enterprises Agency bill into law.

The My Entrepreneurship Goals Programme of the Marketing and Brand Management unit of the Governor's office which is driving the entrepreneurial development in the state has so far trained for certification more than 130 youths on the management of various enterprises.

Within the life of his government, and in a bid to recapitalise the economy, Governor Udom Emmanuel has injected over 2bn Naira interest free loan into trading and other small scale businesses in the state. And in order to ensure that the prices of staple foods are within the reach of the poor, Governor Udom Emmanuel encouraged the formation of cooperative societies and provided them with food protection and processing equipment.

Governor Emmanuel’s investments in the Agric sector and entrepreneural development have yielded immeasurable dividends as thousands of youths in the state have become self-reliant and employers of labour while the home grown Agric produce like Garri and Rice, formed the bulk of the state Government's palliatives distributed to the people of the state during the lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Politics / Udom Emmanuel: A Media-friendly Leader by Torahlinks: 8:41am On Dec 24, 2020
Thomas Jefferson who served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809 is reputed for his statement on the need for a free press. In a message written from Paris to Edward Carrington, whom Jefferson sent as a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1786 to 1788, on the importance of a free press to keep government in check, he concluded that if he had to choose between “a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, he would not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter(Newspapers without Government).

Jefferson went ahead to warn Carrington that all governments, even the new American government of which they themselves were members, unless checked by a knowledgeable citizenry, would inevitably become wolves.

It is widely acclaimed that the press which is known as the Fourth Estate of the Realm is a core partner in the building of a democratic society, and the freedom of the press is one of the pillars of the democratic form of government, one that guarantees the greatest possible freedom to every individual and the greatest protection to minorities.

The above understanding of the essentiality of the press in a democratic society can only be acknowledged by a leader who has nothing to fear; a leader who knows his onions as far as leadership is concerned, and a leader who is ready for suggestions. One of such leaders is Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Yesterday, the Akwa Ibom State Governor in a session with publishers of state-based newspapers and correspondents of national newspapers reverberated on his industrialization agenda, including the Ibom Deep Seaport project and the need for the media to partner with him in the actualization of the agenda. He equally accorded the media professionals the liberty to ask questions about anything, and provided clarifications on all their enquiries.

Before now, the Governor had already met with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House.
However, the meeting was on a representative capacity in line with the COVID-19 Pandemic protocol, where the Governor took time to field questions from Journalists on a wide range of issues.

Mr. Udom Emmanuel is one governor that is so media-friendly. Unlike other leaders who could be described as being mediaphobic, the Akwa Ibom State governor savours the hot seat and is often at the mercy of the press at every given point in time.

During the heat of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, he was engaged in media chats at regular intervals and entertained questions from citizens and media professionals, giving updates on the activities of government. This can only be done by a responsible leader who has nothing to fear.

Governor Emmanuel has shown rare boldness in delivering his mandate as a leader even in the face of economic oppositions amplified by the dreaded coronavirus pandemic. He has touched almost every sector of the economy, and made mind-blowing strides in repositioning the state on the path of economic renaissance.

He is so focused in governance that he gets rarely distracted by myriads of attacks from those who are intimidated by his achievements so far.

However, he has vowed to remain loyal to the people of the state in the discharge of his duties, and would continue to do so. His focus on his development blueprint, even in the face of extreme provocations, has made even the most ardent critic to simply like him.

Akwa Ibom: The Making of An African Dubai

Akwa Ibom State under the Udom Emmanuel adminstration is gradually becoming a destination for investors and entrepreneurs owing to the huge development in agro sector, establishment of industries, economic/ business-friendly policies of the government and good road network.

And as a show of support and solidarity to the result-oriented administration of Governor Emmanuel, the Federal Government recently gave approval to the business case of Ibom Deep Seaport project, which has received much attention from this present administration. This approval is coming on the heels of the vigorous push by the Udom Emmanuel led administration for the actualization of this long awaited vision. It will be recalled that previous administrations since 1999 have made several attempts at kick starting the seaport, without success.

The huge attention given to the project by the present administration is necessitated by the myriad of benefits the project will bring to the state and Nigeria in general, on Completion.

The Ibom deep seaport has been described by the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Economic Development, Akan Okon as a project that will be of immense value to Nigeria, in terms of employment generation, increase in port capacity, and also improve efficiency in shipping business.

He explained that the deep seaport, which is designed for very large vessels that can load over 13,000 containers in one voyage, will also serve as a trans-shipment port as smaller vessels will be used to lighter cargoes from the mega vessels to seaports, and river ports closer to the consignee’s within and outside Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom State is becoming the Dubai of Nigeria, and has seen tremendous increase in population as a result of the safety and government-investor friendly disposition enjoyed in the state.

From a small fishing village, Dubai has become the heartbeat of business.Today, Dubai is a city of skyscrapers, ports, and beaches, where big business takes place alongside sun-seeking tourism. Because of its large expatriate population, it feels like a Middle Eastern melting pot, and the atmosphere is generally tolerant, noted a public affairs commentator, Eric George.

The same can be said of America.
The modern American economy traces its roots to the quest of European settlers for economic gain in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The New World then progressed from a marginally successful colonial economy to a small, independent farming economy and, eventually, to a highly complex industrial economy.

This is what Akwa Ibom State under Governor Emmanuel is evolving into. The industrial revolution he has brought to the state, and in most cases through the relationship he built during his years in the banking sector is what is strategically positioning and expanding our economy, on the same path that Dubai and the US started their journey from.

One may mock this assertion when a comparison between what is happening now in the US and Dubai, and what we have today in Akwa Ibom is made.
We may not have been there now, but truly, we are on our shortest route to greater economic glories.

Rome was not built in a day. Today's Dubai is not a year's plan. Infact, it was a 20- year plan, and it took more than 20 years for them to get to where they are today.

Governor Emmanuel has already positioned Akwa Ibom on a good standpoint, and by 2050, history will speak loud of this noble economic foundation led by Gov. Emmanuel.

There's no greater glory that a leader would leave behind, than to leave a generational legacy of self independence, economic renaissance, entrepreneural development and mental reorientation.

With the huge backing of the Federal Government towards the actualization of the Ibom Deep Seaport, Governor Udom Emmanuel will soon layout a full scale implementation plan for both the Deepsea port and the Liberty Oil and Gas free Zone, also recently approved for commencement, observed the Information and Strategy Commissioner, Ini Ememobong.

Indeed, these are best times to live as Akwa Ibomites. In our time, an economic roadmap for the Akwa Ibom of our dream is laid, through the able hand of our dear visionary leader, Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Crime / Governor Udom Emmanuel Has Zero Tolerance For Cultism And Insecurity by Torahlinks: 10:00am On Dec 14, 2020
#Akwa Ibom Bö Ifiök

Governor Udom Emmanuel has zero tolerance for cultism and insecurity. Young people are appointed into positions of responsibility based on their capacities and not based on which fraternity they belong.

This was not the case before 2015, when Akwa Ibom became an epic killing field occasioned by a reign of terror.

By ruling with the fear of God, Udom is not only preparing the future for the youths, he is preparing them for a meaningful future.

Education / Governor Emmanuel’s Unrivalled Education Reform by Torahlinks: 9:25pm On Aug 06, 2020
By Umoh-Obong Kingsley

Quality education has remained one of the pivotal areas that Gov. Udom Emmanuel administration has invested so much inorder to secure a bright future for Akwa Ibom people. Education is considered the bedrock of development in every society, and when such critical area is neglected, the doom of society is imminent. The understanding of this truth has made this administration not to leave any stone unturned in ensuring that every Akwa Ibom child is well equipped to compete favourably with their counterparts elsewhere through the provision of free, compulsory and quality education.

It is difficult to watch and overlook certain comments by some elements to tarnish the image of a governor who has sacrificed so much for the growth of Akwa Ibom in all sectors, hence my consistent commentaries which have so far flooded your timeline. I wish to sincerely apologise to you if you feel offended by that. But truth must be told, so that the people won't be carried away with the pocket of lies that some critics are known for.

Some people have resorted to embarking on flabby criticism because they lack what to do. They write without researching their facts, all in an attempt to deceive the public. It's disappointing for someone to claim that this government has done nothing in education, while flaunting a few pictures of dilapidated school building. Why can't the person go around and take pictures of schools renovated, built from scratch and equipped to standard, and compare with the few schools that government attention is underway? It makes the mind to be sick when people deliberately attempt to create scenes where there's none.

When we talk about model/standard schools, what comes first to the mind? Is it not a school equipped with internet facilities, good laboratories, good and ventilated class rooms, clean environment suitable for academic, qualified staff, and other vital indices? Don't we have such schools in Akwa Ibom State?

Gov. Udom Emmanuel administration has constructed 10 Computer Laboratories with internet facilities in 10 secondary schools across the 10 Federal Constituencies, constructed, renovated and equipped over 500 schools to standard in the state, and has equally provided learning facilities through the inter-ministerial Direct Labour Committee since 2015.

Some of these schools were community schools, which the government had taken over 17 already. They were in a very sorry state structure-wise. And since then, construction work had been done. The few that are still remaining would be touched.

Is it possible that all schools can be transformed and transfigured at the same time when we have other sectors that equally demand government attention? Some persons really need tutorials on the operation of government.

Every year, budgets are presented and on approval become the vision documents for the government which captures proposals intended for different sectors and ministries. If the government channels all resources at its disposal to education, what about youth and sports development? What about Agriculture? What about the works ministry? What about commerce and industry? Governance has its modus operandi.

For the first time in the history of the state, this administration has organized an education submit where stakeholders brainstormed on how to reposition the sector for quality and effective education. Problems were highlighted and solutions profered, which the administration is working tirelessly to implement. What do some people really want?

Among other things, this administration has embarked on strategic interventions in Tertiary Institutions in the state such as roads, equipment supplies, academic blocks; payment of subventions to public primary and secondary schools as well as Technical Colleges; payment of over N600 million WAEC and NABTEB fees for indigenes in public secondary schools annually; provision of training aids to mentally and physically challenged pupils at the Special Education Center of the state; provision of training equipment at the Adult and Non-Formal Education Centers; computerization of the Examination Division of the Ministry of Education, and still counting.

These giant strides so far point to what lies ahead for Akwa Ibom people, and such educational foundation is strong enough to take every Akwa Ibom child to greater heights, including special children.

The international community and education stakeholders in the country have commended the governor for the achievements so far. More will be done to reposition the education sector in the state for the security of the future of Akwa Ibom children and youths. This is the heartbeat of Gov. Udom Emmanuel as judged by his speeches and actions to create a future that will accommodate all through the provision of quality education.
