A football commentator has lost his job after falling asleep on live television while giving his thoughts on a UEFA Champions League group stage match this week. Dong Lu, the veteran Chinese pundit, was acting as co-commentator for LeTV's coverage of the Real Madrid versus Paris Saint-Germain match earlyWednesdaymorning Beijing time, when he dozed off. In his defence, the 46-year-old had to stay up till3:45 a.m.to watch the kick-off - in Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium - and fatigue got the better of him in the last 20 minutes. In footage of the match from LeTV, Dong was heard snoring at around the 79-minute mark, in an incident that had football fans across China chuckling. However, his employers at LeTV did not take the incident lightly, as the man with 20 years of experience analysing football matches was fired from his post soon after. Dong later apologised for the incident and vowed to continue his profession through his personal online blog. The match in question ended 1–0, with Real Madrid getting the crucial win to secure qualification to the round of 16 with two games to spare. 'Los Blancos' took a first-half lead through substitute Nacho Fernandez, who had been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, having come on for the injured Marcelo. Despite twice hitting the woodwork in the match, the Parisians were unable to get themselves on the scoresheet.

Benin’s long-ruling former president Mathieu Kerekou has died at the age of 82, leading to a week of national mourning. Kerekou, a Marxist who seized power in a coup ruled for 28 years and set a new wave of African democracy. Announcing the death on Thursday, President Boni Yayi of Benin Republic described Kerekou as “a great man.’’ He added that “in the government’s name, I declare a week-long state of national mourning with all flags in the land flying at half-mast.’’ Considered by many to be the father of modern Benin, Kerekou was born in 1933 and received military training in Mali and Senegal before joining former colonial master France’s army and rising through the ranks to major. He seized power in 1972 and converted to a Marxist ideology two years later, although he later renounced Marxism and came to accept multiparty democracy, organising a broad-based national dialogue in 1990 and stepped aside when he lost a vote the following year. Kerekou made a political comeback five years later and was eventually re-elected in 2001 but faced with term limits and age restraint, he ceded power to Boni Yayi in 2006. In the streets of the capital Cotonou, the mood was sad in some quarters but celebratory in others. While some expressed sadness, others described him as someone who murdered freedom in Benin. |

The Obalufe of Iremo, who also doubles as the prime minister of Ile-Ife, Oba Solomon Folorunso Omisakin, is dead. By the virtue of his traditional position in the ancient town, he was the head of Ife kingmakers and next in rank to any Ooni of Ife. Tribune Online gathered that Oba Omisakin, who was aged 83, slumpedon Thursdaymorning and was subsequently rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife, where he eventually died. Sources told Tribune Online that he had been battling with an undisclosed ailment even before the death of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, in July. According to the source, "he even underwent a surgery before the death of Oba Sijuwade. He was just recuperating when the Ooni died. After the surgery, he was okay, though he looked frail but he had been managing his health since then. As an old man, I think his ailment had to do with his old age." However, a top palace source in Ile-Ife told Tribune Online that the death of Obalufe might prolonged the process for the selection of new Ooni based on the important role Obalufe has to play on who occupies the vacant stool. The source hinted that "traditionally, the Obalufe of Iremo is saddled with the responsibility of pronouncing the new Ooni and also presenting him to the people of Ile-Ife and Osun State government." Confirming the death of Oba Omisakin, the chairman, Eleyele Landlords' Association in Ile-Ife, where Obalufe built his house, Chief Elijah Adeyele, said "it is true, Obalufe passed on this morning. I am just coming from his house to condole with his family."
