SIGHT FOR THE BLIND
The first bionic eye prototype was introduced by a team of Australian designers in early June. The bionic eye works by having a chip implanted into the user’s skull and then connected to a digital camera in the glasses. While the glasses currently only allow the user to see outlines, the prototype has a lot of promise to be improved upon in the future. Once the camera captures an image, the signal is changed and sent wirelessly to the microchip. From there, the signal activates spots on the microchip implanted into the visual cortex of the brain. The team of researchers is hoping to further the capabilities of the glasses while keeping them lightweight, adjustable, and comfortable for the wearer. It should be usable by 85 percent of people who are legally blind.

Immunity To Cancer
http://i1.wp.com/listverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/naked_mole_rat-e1373344882484.jpg?resize=632%2C422

The University of Rochester published a study on June 19th suggesting the mechanism that allows naked mole rats to be immune to cancer. These creepy subterranean rodents may get a lot of heat for their looks, but they seem to be having the last laugh when it comes to their immunity to cancer.

A gooey sugar known as hyaluronan (HA) has been found in the spaces between naked mole rats’ cells, which seem to stop them from growing close together and forming tumors. The substance, acting like a parent chaperone at a high school dance, causes early contact inhibition, which is a process that stops cells from multiplying once they reach a certain density. A double mutation in the two enzymes that promote HA’s growth and reduce its breakdown is thought to be the reason for the elevated amount of the substance. Scientists tested the theory by infecting skin cells containing both high and low amounts of HA with cancer.

It was found that in the cell with low levels of HA, the cancer multiplied rapidly, but in cells with high HA, tumors failed to form. Scientists are hoping to modify laboratory rats to produce high amounts of HA in an attempt to make mice immune to cancer.

scientific discoveries are being made every day that are changing the world we live in. This list contains some crazy scientific innovations—and they’ve all been made in June 2013. From physics to medicine to biology, the following stories are sure to blow your mind. Technological and medical advancements that most people believed would never happen in their lifetime, let alone at this very moment, are real and continuing to develop. These discoveries bring with them a myriad of new technology and techniques that will only grow and improve with time to make the world a better place to live in.

TELEKINESIS
Y'all remember jean grey from the xmen??
Being able to control the motion of objects may seem like the plot of a science fiction novel, but thanks to researchers from the Minnesota College of Science and Engineering, it’s now a reality. Using a noninvasive technique known as electroencephalography that harnesses brainwaves, five students were able to control the motion of a helicopter.

Facing in the opposite direction of the copter, students were able to move the vehicle in various directions by imagining themselves moving their left hand, right hand, and both hands. After some time and training, participants were soon able to get the helicopter to perform several maneuvers including passing through rings with an image of the flight being showed to them on a screen. Researchers are hoping to expand this new noninvasive brain wave technology to eventually restore motion, hearing, and sight in patients suffering from paralysis or neurodegeneration.

TINY BATTERY
With the recent invention of 3-D printers, the sky is the limit for the types of intricate and complex objects it can create. On June 18th, it was announced that a team of researchers at Harvard and the University of Illinois were able to synthesize a lithium-ion battery smaller than a grain of sand and less than the width of a human hair.

Researchers were able to achieve this astounding accomplishment through the delicate layering of a network of interlaced electrodes. After a 3-D design is complete on the computer, the printer uses specially made liquid inks containing electrodes designed to immediately harden once they hit the air. The device can serve a wide range of uses due to its size.

Prior to this battery, the existence of incredibly small battery-powered objects was few and far between. This is because devices designed to be incredibly small required batteries that were just as big as they were to give subsequent energy or they were given incredibly small batteries lacking any substantial power. The 3-D printer uses the inks and a detailed design from a computer program to be able to create the microbatteries.

Bioengineered Body Parts

I HATE MY NOSE!!! I WILL PROBABLY CUT IT OFF AND GET A NEW ONE.

a group of doctors at Duke University successfully implanted the first bioengineered blood vessel into a live patient. Though bioengineering has been advancing rapidly, this procedure was the first successful implant of any synthetically bioengineered body part.

Implanted into a patient suffering from the end stages of kidney disease, the vein had been synthesized from donated human cells that were then developed on a scaffold. In order to prevent any antibodies in the patient from attacking the foreign vessel, the qualities that could trigger the attack were removed. The vein has proved more successful in tests than synthetic or animal-based implants because they are not prone to clotting and don’t pose risk of infection during the surgery.

Incredibly, the veins are made of the same flexible materials that they’re connected to and even take on the properties of their cellular environment and other veins. With the success of this procedure, this emerging field has huge implications for further uses in the medical world. Soon, doctors hope to be bioengineering veins for heart disease and maybe even go on to bioengineer whole organs or body parts.

Cloud Cities

If you ever thought Cloud City in Star Wars was awesome, it turns out we might be able to do something similar someday on Venus. Sure, the surface sucks, but if you go about 50 km up, Venus’ atmosphere is the most Earth-like there is in the Solar System. What’s more, unlike the crushing pressure and hot temperatures on the surface, you have the same atmospheric pressure as on Earth, temperatures varying from 0-50 degree Celsius, and pretty similar gravity to here.

So, floating cities in some form on Venus is actually not the dumbest thing. It’s more appealing than Mars in some ways. While it may not be happening in our lifetime, it may well be a more serious plan in the future.

Transporting Human Consciousness to Other Worlds

We will one day learn how to mimic a human brain on a computer, and download human consciousness onto it. It can then be given sensory inputs and physically exist as a machine. All of the fundamental building blocks are there already. Scientists have created simulated brains with about 1-2 Million neurons. The human brain has about 100 Billion. So we are a long ways off, but we will get there.

Now imagine this. It’s very difficult to send a human to another star system. There are speed limits and problems like radiation and body deterioration. You then have to worry about the atmosphere and sources of food on exoplanets. But we can send androids, communication devices, solar panels, and 3D printers.

We might be able to send a single craft to another star system at incredible speeds. It will land on the nearest available rocky exoplanet. The androids, pre loaded with a human consciousness, are powered on and begin working, setting up a manufacturing facility to gather raw materials and generate new machines and androids. A data store of thousands more minds are loaded onto the androids as they come online. Additional spacecraft are built to send to other star systems.

We then beam data with high powered lasers, providing a steady stream of new human minds, as well as improved technology schematics. Humans can now colonize the galaxy.

ASTEROID MINING
Asteroid mining is a modern day gold rush that will open a trillion-dollar industry and provide a near infinite supply of metals and water to support our growth both on this planet and off. More asteroids are discovered near earth everyday, which are easier to reach than moon and there are thousands of candidates. In the future they will be the source of near infinite supply of precious resources.

One water rich asteroid could produce enough fuel for every rocket launched in history. One single 500 meter water rich asteroid would produce over $5 trillion worth of water for use in space. It currently costs $20,000 to send a liter of water from earth to space.

One platinum rich asteroid could contain more platinum group metals than what’s been mined on earth in all of history. Platinum (like most heavy elements) is actually seldom used because there isn’t much of it on this planet because it all sunk to the middle of the planet when everything was still fluid. Abundance of platinum would reduce the cost of electronics, electrify transportation and drive innovation though the roof and create a greener earth. One single 500 meter platinum rich asteroid would be worth $2.9 trillion dollars (with current market price) and would supply 174 times more than the yearly world output of platinum.

Other class of asteroids such as Iron, Cobalt and Nickel would be useful to construct space platforms. There are a couple of companies that are committed to start asteroid mining within a couple of decades.

Cultured Meat
In the future we might be able to grow meat from cells in a controlled environment so we won’t need animals anymore. Scientists have managed to produce a burger in the lab, but it’s currently too expensive for mass production (although this might become normal in 10-20 years).

This has the potential to free up our depleting resources (i.e. land, water) currently dedicated to meat production, and growing meat in such a setting could also resolve many food borne illnesses. This would also greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, so far the technology has only been able to create minced meat and not slabs of meat as that would require vascularization of the cells.

Recording and Replaying Dreams

Scientists in Japan have been working on a machine that would allow this. While researchers have so far only created technology that can reproduce simple images from the brain, the discovery paves the way for the ability to unlock people’s dreams and other brain processes.

This would be pretty cool until they accidently select one of your nightmares to replay.

Rebuilding Organs

There has been a lot of work towards rebuilding organs. The theory is to essentially take a diseased organ of any kind, decellularize it (remove all the individual cells), and leaving only the extracellular matrix ‘scaffold’. Then repopulate it with healthy stem cells, and let that scaffold direct the cells and rebuild that end-stage kidney into a healthy kidney and get off dialysis or rebuild a healthy heart from one that is riddled with heart disease. Maybe re-grow an entire limb lost by a soldier or someone in a horrific accident.

Quite a few ways that can be achieved and a few Nobel prizes from that, but a group in this field has already done this with a pig pancreas, and while it didn’t last very long ultimately, it was an important first step.

What is stopping us now is mostly the complexity of the organs involved and the difficulty in successfully recellularizing complex organs that have many different cell types and rely on a multitude of factors to get them to grow into the appropriate cell types. It turns out, chemical, mechanical, and electrical environments affect cell growth and differentiation. We’ll get there, but it will take a little more time (and money).

16. The floating candles in the Great Hall were created using candle-shaped holders containing oil and burning wicks and suspended from wires that moved up and down on a special effects rig to create the impression that they were floating. Eventually one of the wires snapped due to the heat of the flame causing the candle to fall to the floor. Fortunately no one was injured, but the decision was made to re-create the candles using CGI for the following films as using real candles was determined to be a safety hazard.

17. In the script, the flashbacks to Voldemort killing Harry’s parents were written by J.K. Rowling herself. The producers knew she was the only one who knew exactly what happened.

18. When holding auditions for the role of Hermione, the casting team traveled around to local British elementary schools to hold auditions in hope to find their actress. When they arrived at Emma Watson’s school, she had no desire to audition despite nearly every single girl in her school wanting to. It was encouragement from her teacher to at least attempt the audition that made her be the last girl to audition of her whole school.

19. The floor in the great hall is made of actual York stone. Production designer Stuart Craig had the foresight to invest a significant amount of his design budget on the stone. While this decision was questioned at the time, it proved to be a wise one, as the stone was durable enough to withstand the footsteps of hundreds of actors and several camera crews over the near decade it took to film the entire series.

20. Hagrid is 8 feet 6 inches tall.

21. James Phelps and Oliver Phelps, the twin actors who play Fred and George Weasley respectively, both have naturally dark brown hair which was dyed red for their roles. Similarly, Tom Felton’s hair, which is also naturally brown, was bleached blond for his role of Draco Malfoy.

22. In this film, all the food that you see in the Great Hall feasts are real. Director Chris Columbus wanted a very elaborate welcome feast to match the description in the book, with roast beef, ham, turkey, and all the trimmings. Unfortunately filming under the hot stage lighting for hours at a time quickly caused the food to develop an unpleasant odor, despite the meat being changed every two days and the vegetables twice a day. For the following films samples of real food were frozen so that molds could be made of them and copies cast in resin.

23. Throughout the whole of the Harry Potter series, Daniel Radcliffe went through 160 pairs of glasses

24. The trouble-making poltergeist Peeves (played by Rik Mayall) does not, in the end, appear in the movie nor in deleted scenes on any home editions of the film. Mayall claimed he didn’t find out that he was cut from the final cut until he saw the movie himself. Ultimately Peeves was never used in any of the Harry Potter films.

25. Neville receives a remembrall from his grandmother but he doesn’t remember what he has forgotten. In that scene, Neville is the only student without his robe on. He must have not remembered to put his robe on.

11. In the film, the scar on Harry’s forehead is off-center. This was done at J.K. Rowling’s request. Due to the artwork on the covers of her books, many people have assumed that his scar is supposed to be in the center of his forehead. The books, however, never specify exactly where on his forehead the scar is located.

12. Author J.K. Rowling revealed on her website that she was considered to play Lily Potter during the Mirror of Erised scene, but she turned down the role, which instead went to Geraldine Somerville.

13. Director Chris Columbus has stated in interviews that he is unhappy with the visual effects in this film, saying that they were “rushed” and “never up to anyone’s standards,” and sought to improve them for the following film. This did not, however, prevent the film from being nominated for a BAFTA award for “Best Visual Effects.”

14. At the time this film was in production, only four of the eventual seven books in the series had been published. J.K. Rowling was retained as a consultant on the film, not only to ensure consistency with the first book, but also to avoid conflicts with her vision for the later entries. It has been confirmed that at least one line of dialogue was removed from the script to avoid a contradiction with the then-unpublished “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”.

15. The movie is known as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” everywhere except the USA and so every scene in which the Philosopher’s Stone was mentioned was filmed twice (once with the actors saying “Philosopher’s” and once with the actors saying “Sorcerer’s”) or redubbed (notably, one of the times Hermione says it in the library, her face isn’t shown). The reason for this was to keep the films consistent with the book series: the US publisher, Scholastic, had changed the title (and corresponding text) to “Sorcerer’s Stone”. The title change was done with the consent of author ‘J.K. Rowling’, but she has since said that she regrets having granting permission, and as a fledgling author she wasn’t in a strong enough position to fight it at the time.

TV/Movies / 25 Interesting Facts About Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone by Toybreezy: 10:27am On Jun 06, 2016
Here are 25 Interesting Facts About Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

1. Alan Rickman was hand-picked to play Snape by J.K. Rowling, and received special instruction from her as to his character. Rowling even provided the actor with vital details of Snape’s back story not revealed until the final novel.

2. Warner Bros. originally considered making the entire “Harry Potter” series as a set of CGI animated films, or attempting to combine several of the novels into a single movie. The studio’s reasoning mainly had to do with concern over the rapid aging of child actors-if production ran too long on any of the films, or if production was delayed between sequels, the leading actors might have to be recast. Author J.K. Rowling vetoed both the ideas of combining books and an animated film, so the studio decided instead to produce all seven (later eight) films back to back so the same child actors could play their roles in every film.

3. The child actors in Harry Potter would do their actual schoolwork in the movie to make the school setting more real.

4. The Restricted Section scene was filmed in the Duke Humfrey’s building at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. They have very strict rules about not bringing flames into the library. The makers of Harry Potter were the first ever to be allowed to break this rule in hundreds of years.

5. The scenes at Hagrid’s Hut were filmed on location, albeit in a small patch of land in London not far from Leavesden Studios. The hut was demolished when the shoot wrapped in case fans of the film swamped it.

http://toybreezyinfo..com.ng/2016/06/top-5-philosophical-ideas-everyone.html[img]

6. The inscription around the Mirror of Erised says: “Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi”. Reading the inscription backwards it says, “I show not your face but your heart’s desire.”

7. The Hogwarts motto, “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus”, means “never tickle a sleeping dragon”.

8. The filmmakers originally wanted to use Canterbury Cathedral as a filming location for some of the Hogwarts scenes, but the Dean of Canterbury refused to allow it, saying that it was unfitting for a Christian church to be used to promote pagan imagery. Gloucester Cathedral agreed to take its place; the Dean of Gloucester, the Very Reverend Nicholas Bury, admitted to being a fan of the books. Nonetheless there was a huge media outcry in Gloucester when it was decided to use the local Cathedral as a filming location. Protesters wrote letters by the sack-load to local newspapers, claiming it was blasphemy and promising to block the film-crew’s access. In the end, only one protester turned up.

9. Platform 9 3/4 was filmed at King’s Cross, but on platforms 4 and 5. J.K. Rowling has admitted that she mixed up the layout of London’s King’s Cross railway station when she assigned the Hogwarts Express to platform 9 3/4, reached by using magic between platforms 9 and 10. She meant the location to be in the inter-city part of the station, but 9 and 10 are actually among the rather less grand suburban platforms. The movie conformed to the book: the platforms seen as 9 and 10 are in real life inter-city platforms 4 and 5. However, there is, in fact a “Platform 9 3/4” at King’s Cross. It’s located in the walkway area between the real platforms 9 and 10, as a treat for fans of Harry Potter.

10. The filmmakers attempted to go the extra mile of matching the kid’s appearances to how the novel describes them, by fitting Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) with green-colored contact lenses, and similarly make Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) wear fake buck teeth. But when Dan’s eyes reacted strongly to the contacts, and Emma couldn’t talk clearly with the fake teeth in her mouth, these ideas were dropped.

Fashion / How Fashion Affects Your Attitude (#fashionmyattitude) by Toybreezy: 9:36pm On Apr 19, 2016
Our choice of clothing says a lot about us as individuals. Through clothing we can project an outer image for the world to see. Most time we are often judged from our physical appearance and how our clothing style fits our body shape and sometimes what we wear is used to predict our personality. Are you down in the dumps, moody, try changing your clothes to change your attitude.Fashion affects your mood from the outside in a way, Changing your clothes works on your mood from the outside. Ever notice how you feel when youspill something on your shirt or put on a wrinkled blouse? It can be bothersome and irritating. Although it’s not likely to ruin your day, all of a sudden you feel like something’s amiss. You don’t feel quite right. Your outside apparel has affected your feelings inside.hanging around the house in some old sweatpants could leave you sad, depressed and feeling unaccomplished, although that’s ok once in while, it can end up becoming a habit where you spend moretime on the couch with the TV than out in the world. Put on a nice pair of dress jeans and a colorful top. You might notice that you have a little boost of energy and confidence with this new outfit. Essentially you’ve changed your inner attitude by changing your outer world. feeling unaccomplished, although that’s ok once in while, it can end up becoming a habit where you spend more time on thecouch with the TV than out in the world. Put on a nice pair of dress jeans and a colorful top. You mightnotice that you have a little boost of energy and confidence with this new outfit. Essentially you’ve changed your inner attitude by changing your outer world.Changing your clothes can help you “fake it until youmake it.”If your clothes can make you happy from the outside, it could also work the other way round (inside out).It entails using your fashion sense as a form of sxpression, a way to give cue to the world "hello world this is what's going on within me". if you’re already feeling happy on the inside that you would want to express it on the outside. So take a look at how you’re feeling and decide if you want to expressthat outwardly to the world. Are you in a good mood? Then dress appropriately to express that feeling. If that means wearing your favorite yellow shirt or are you feeling sad And you out with all fierce make up And dark coloured clothes. It may not seem visible but people notice what we wear and a small amount of guessing a person's mood comes from the clothing appearance. My parting advice. Your fashion/style is your attitudeso you can change it into something better or express it. Whichever physical signal you transmit to the world. Wear it well....

Romance / Re: Why Do We Have Nightmares, And What Makes Us Afraid Of Our Own Thoughts? by Toybreezy: 10:32pm On Apr 09, 2016
Lastly (for real this time), a brief note about why we are sometimes afraid of our thoughts, not only when looking back at a dream, but when conscious as well. All people have weird, scary thoughts sometimes. Not only about absurd dangerous hypothetical situations, our mortality, etc., but also things just like “If I did this this and this, I could rob this bank and get out totally safe and sound” for one example. It seems silly to say, but our brain essentially thinks things like this so that it has time to consider it and realize that it’s what you SHOULDN’T do, and to prevent you from actually doing it. Another example is that just because sometimes you think about hitting someone that’s annoying you or really want to, that doesn’t mean you have anger problems, it’s just your brain acknowledging something that it knows it shouldn’t do but would really like to do, and making you aware of how it would play out so you realize the absurdity of the action(s) so that you DON’T do it.
