PoliticsNigeria's September Crude Oil Production, Lowest In Ten Months by treesun(op): 10:57pm On Oct 14, 2025
Further review shows that production in June 2025 stood at 1.50 million barrels daily; May, 1.45 million daily; April, 1.48 million daily; and March, 1.40 million daily.

ASaharaReporters review of the monthly crude oil production data released by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has shown that Nigeria recorded its lowest crude oil production in ten months in September 2025.

According to OPEC, Nigeria's crude oil production stood at 1.39 million barrels per day in September 2025, down from 1.43 million barrels recorded in August and 1.50 million in July 2025.

Further review shows that production in June 2025 stood at 1.50 million barrels daily; May, 1.45 million daily; April, 1.48 million daily; and March, 1.40 million daily.

Other figures include February 2025 with a daily average of 1.46 million barrels, January 2025 with 1.53 million barrels daily, and December 2024 with 1.48 million barrels daily.

Of the ten months reviewed, Nigeria failed to meet OPEC’s quota of 1.5 million barrels per day on seven occasions.

Crude oil production has continued to be hampered by several factors, including widespread sabotage, pipeline vandalism, and poor management of the country's oil sector.

These challenges have led to Nigeria consistently falling short of its production quotas despite having the capacity to produce more.

Industry experts have called on the government to intensify efforts to address these issues, warning that continued shortfalls in crude oil production could affect the country’s revenue generation and economic growth.

Nigeria has also been unable to meet local refinery demand for crude oil, SaharaReporters earlier reported.

This comes as the Federal Government disclosed that a total of 67,657,559 barrels of crude oil were supplied to local refiners for processing between January and August 2025.

This figure, confirmed by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), highlights ongoing challenges in bridging the crude allocation gap facing indigenous refineries despite Nigeria’s rising production levels.

Speaking in Abuja, the Head of Media and Strategic Communications at the NUPRC, Eniola Akinkuotu, said the crude allocation was made in line with the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation policy.

"A total of 67,657,559 barrels were delivered to local refiners between January and August this year. All refiners got that amount within the eight-month period,” Akinkuotu stated.

In a document seen by SaharaReporters and published by the NUPRC, an estimated total of 123.4 million barrels was projected to be required by local refineries between January and June. The daily requirement was put at 770,500 barrels, while the monthly need was forecast at 23.8 million barrels.

With 67.7 million barrels of crude oil made available to domestic refineries between January and August, it means that over 55.8 million barrels needed for local consumption (using January to June NUPRC domestic needs estimates) were not supplied.

This indicates that the Nigerian government could not provide at least 45% of the crude oil required locally.

Previously, SaharaReporters reported that Nigeria’s foreign trade statistics for the first and second quarters of 2025 showed that the country imported fuel worth N4.13 trillion between January and June 2025.

In a statement signed by Rev. Alari Alari, Chairman of ECWA Kasuwan Magani District Church Council (DCC), the Church expressed grief over the development, saying, "With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Rev. Anthony Lamba, who was kidnapped on July 24th, 2025, along with his wife.

The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has confirmed the death of one of its pastors, Rev. Anthony Lamba, who was abducted by bandits in Southern Kaduna.

"While his wife was later released after paying a ransom of ₦5 million, and they later demanded a motorcycle, Rev. Anthony remained in captivity.

"Sadly, while arrangements were being made to deliver the motorcycle, he fell seriously ill and passed away in the camp.

"A memorial service in his honor will be held at his hometown, Kallah, on Sunday, October 19th, 2025.”

"Let us continue to pray for the Church of God and the family he left behind," the statement added.

Lamba was reportedly kidnapped along with Christiana Anthony and Danlami Zana while working on their farm on Friday, July 25.

In a similar incident, SaharaReporters reported on Thursday, October 2, that terrorists ravaging communities in Kwara State had brutally killed Reverend James Audu Issa, an ECWA pastor, despite collecting millions of naira from his distressed family in ransom.

The cleric was abducted from Ekati village in the Patigi Local Government Area around August 28, 2025.

His family, church, and community members struggled for weeks to meet the abductors’ demands in the hope of securing his release.

Sources told Nupeko TV that the gunmen initially demanded N100million for his freedom.

After tense negotiations, the ransom was reduced to N5 million, which was eventually paid by the impoverished community in a desperate attempt to save the pastor.

However, after receiving the N5 million, the bandits displayed extreme cruelty by demanding an additional N45 million. Before any further negotiations could be made, they killed the cleric.

Politics2027: NASS Proposes November 2026 For Presidential, Governorship Elections by treesun(op): 8:50pm On Oct 13, 2025
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the National Assembly has proposed that presidential and governorship elections be conducted in November 2026, instead of the usual February or March of the election year.

The proposal is contained in the draft amendments to the Electoral Act 2022, which were discussed on Monday during a one-day public hearing held by the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South).

According to Section 4(7) of the proposed amendment, “Elections into the office of the President and Governor of a State shall be held not later than 185 days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder of the office.”

With the expiration of the current administration fixed for May 29, 2027, this means that the next presidential and governorship elections would take place around November 2026, as 185 days before May 29 falls within that month.

Similarly, the proposal for federal and state legislative elections under Section 4(5) states that such polls “shall be held not later than 185 days before the date on which each of the Houses stands dissolved.”

Lawmakers say the amendment aims to allow sufficient time for the resolution of election disputes before winners are sworn in.

Explaining further, the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon. Adebayo Balogun, said the amendment would help prevent situations where court cases linger after winners assume office.

“We are proposing that all election litigations be concluded before the swearing-in of declared winners,” Balogun said.

“To achieve this, we are recommending that the current 180 days allowed for tribunal judgments be reduced to 90 days, while appellate and Supreme Court decisions should each take no more than 60 days — all within 185 days before inauguration.”

He added that the proposal would also require corresponding amendments to Sections 285 and 139 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to align with the new timeline.

At the public hearing, several stakeholders — including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) represented by Prof. Abdullahi Zuru — backed the push for electronic voting and electronic transmission of results to enhance transparency.

Under Section 60(5) of the proposed amendment, the law would make it mandatory for presiding officers to transmit results both electronically and manually. Failure to comply would attract a penalty of one-year imprisonment, a ₦1 million fine, or both.

The proposed amendments also introduce early voting, allowing certain categories of Nigerians — such as security personnel, INEC officials, accredited journalists, observers, and ad-hoc staff — to vote up to 14 days before election day.

The joint committee’s document also proposes the removal of election timelines from the Constitution and their inclusion in the Electoral Act, to make future adjustments more flexible.

“Section 28, now renumbered as Section 27(5–7), was introduced to reflect this change and unlock the constitutional restrictions on election timelines,” the document stated.

Stakeholders at the hearing broadly endorsed the reforms, describing them as timely steps toward improving Nigeria’s electoral credibility, strengthening institutional efficiency, and ensuring that post-election litigations no longer overlap with new tenures.

PoliticsINEC: Yakubu Reveals Major Challenges Under His Watch by treesun(op): 8:06am On Oct 13, 2025
The immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, has admitted that the Commission under his watch from 2015 to 2025, was marred by relentless crises that threatened the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, despite reforms and innovations introduced during the period.

Yakubu made this revelation in INEC’s new publication, Election Management in Nigeria: 2015–2025.

He painted a sobering picture of how recurring setbacks – from pre-election litigations and conflicting court rulings to violent attacks on INEC facilities and personnel – consistently undermined the smooth conduct of polls.

According to him, the commission was dragged into thousands of court cases, often receiving contradictory orders from courts of concurrent jurisdiction, creating legal confusion and disrupted preparations for elections.

The former INEC boss equally cited the menace of vote trading, persistent logistical breakdowns that forced nationwide postponements, and targeted violence against election officials as some of the most destabilising problems.

“The 2015–2025 decade was not without its challenges. Conflicting court orders, violence targeted at our staff and facilities, the scourge of vote trading, and persistent logistics bottlenecks continued to test the credibility and smooth conduct of elections,” said Yakubu.

He added that beyond human and legal hurdles, technical failures also dogged INEC’s operations, stressing that equipment breakdowns and network collapses sometimes crippled accreditation and delayed transmission of results, raising public doubts about the reliability of the system.

Tinubu’s Reckless Use of Presidential Pardon Undermines Justice and Emboldens Criminality

The recent announcement of a presidential pardon by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has, as expected, provoked outrage across the nation.

Ordinarily, the power of presidential pardon is a solemn prerogative, a moral and constitutional instrument designed to temper justice with mercy and to underscore the humanity of the state. When properly exercised, it elevates justice and strengthens public faith in governance.

Regrettably, the latest pardon issued by the Tinubu administration has done the very opposite. The decision to extend clemency to individuals convicted of grave crimes such as drug trafficking, kidnapping, murder, and corruption not only diminishes the sanctity of justice but also sends a dangerous signal to the public and the international community about the values this government upholds.

At a time when Nigeria continues to reel under the weight of insecurity, moral decay, and a surge in drug-related offences, it is both shocking and indefensible that the presidency would prioritize clemency for those whose actions have directly undermined national stability and social order.

Particularly worrisome is the revelation that 29.2% percent of those pardoned were convicted for drug-related crimes at a time when our youth are being destroyed by narcotics, and our nation is still struggling to cleanse its image from the global stain of drug offences.

Even more disturbing is the moral irony that this act of clemency is coming from a President whose own past remains clouded by unresolved and unexplained issues relating to the forfeiture of thousands of dollars to the United States government over drug-related investigations. It is, therefore, no surprise that this administration continues to demonstrate a worrying tolerance for individuals associated with criminal enterprise.

A presidential pardon is meant to symbolize restitution and moral reform. Instead, what we have witnessed is a mockery of the criminal justice system, an affront to victims, a demoralization of law enforcement, and a grave injury to the conscience of the nation.

Clemency must never be confused with complicity. When a government begins to absolve offenders of the very crimes it claims to be fighting, it erodes the moral authority of leadership and emboldens lawlessness.

Nigeria deserves a leadership that upholds justice, not one that trivializes it. -AA

PoliticsEvery Minute, 11 Nigerians Fall Into Extreme Poverty — Report Shows by treesun(op): 9:17am On Oct 12, 2025
Nigeria’s poverty crisis has deepened alarmingly under Bola Tinubu’s administration, with a new report showing that every minute, 11 Nigerians slip into extreme poverty.
The disturbing figures, released by StatiSense on Friday using World Bank and National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data, reveal that 22.6 million Nigerians entered extreme poverty between 2018 and 2023, pushing the total number of poor citizens to over 90.6 million.

The analysis further shows that poverty continues to rise in 2025, with more than half of Nigeria’s population — 52.5 per cent, or roughly 53 in every 100 citizens — now living below the poverty line.

According to StatiSense, “For every nine walking steps you take, a Nigerian falls into poverty,” illustrating the alarming rate of decline in living standards.

The breakdown indicates that an average of 5.65 million people fall into extreme poverty annually, translating to 15,472 people per day, 645 every hour, and 11 every minute.

The trend reflects the worsening economic reality faced by Nigerians since the All Progressives Congress (APC) came to power in 2015 and accelerated under Tinubu’s leadership since 2023.

Despite promises of renewed hope and economic reform, inflation, unemployment, and the cost of living have continued to rise, leaving millions unable to afford basic necessities.

Economic experts warn that the current trajectory, if unchecked, could erase decades of progress and entrench a cycle of hunger, joblessness, and inequality.

Screenshot of the data
Observers also note that the government’s policies — including fuel subsidy removal, currency devaluation, and rising taxes — have disproportionately affected the poor, while relief measures have been slow and inadequate.

Critics accuse the APC of presiding over a government disconnected from the daily realities of Nigerians, arguing that the ruling party’s economic policies have failed to create meaningful growth or lift citizens out of poverty.

With 11 Nigerians falling into poverty every minute, analysts say the so-called “renewed hope” has turned into renewed despair — a reflection of worsening hardship in a country once described as Africa’s economic giant.

CrimePassengers Arrested With Over $6.1million Cash At Lagos Airport by treesun(op): 3:12pm On Oct 11, 2025
Multiple security sources familiar with the incident noted that the suspects were believed to be couriers for a politically exposed person (PEP), although their exact identities and destination were not immediately disclosed.

Security operatives at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA1) in Lagos State have reportedly arrested a group of passengers caught travelling with a staggering $6.1million in cash.

According to a Premium Times report, the suspects, described as a group of young men, were intercepted at the domestic terminal of the airport while preparing to board an Aero Contractors flight.

Multiple security sources familiar with the incident noted that the suspects were believed to be couriers for a politically exposed person (PEP), although their exact identities and destination were not immediately disclosed.

The passengers were apprehended by operatives of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) unit, who reportedly became suspicious after routine screening checks revealed the unusual amount of foreign currency being moved.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that the suspects had been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for interrogation and further investigation.

“We are still working with the EFCC to unravel the full details,” a senior AVSEC official said on Saturday.

Years ago, in a similar development, the Nigerian Customs operatives attached to the airport in Lagos had impounded the sum of $8,065,612 about to be illegally ferried out of the country through one of the international airlines in 2020.

The service said that the sum was discovered in 20 wraps inside a coaster bus at the tarmac of the airport on January 16, 2020 at the E-Wing of the airport.

Former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col Hameed Ali (retd), had said that the money laundering was discovered through intelligence put in place by the command at the airport.

Foreign AffairsPeru’s Congress Impeaches President Dina Boluarte Amid Nationwide Protests, by treesun(op): 1:04pm On Oct 10, 2025
The dramatic vote took place during a late-night session on Thursday, with 122 out of 130 lawmakers from across the political spectrum backing her impeachment, according to the BBC.

Peru’s Congress has voted overwhelmingly to remove President Dina Boluarte from office on grounds of “permanent moral incapacity,” capping months of political turmoil, corruption scandals, and nationwide protests against her embattled government.

The dramatic vote took place during a late-night session on Thursday, with 122 out of 130 lawmakers from across the political spectrum backing her impeachment, according to the BBC.

The decision makes Boluarte, one of the world’s most unpopular leaders with an approval rating between 2% and 4%, the latest in a string of Peruvian presidents to be forced from power.

Shortly after the vote, Congress leader Jose Jeri was sworn in as interim president, as Peru currently has no vice-president. Outside the Congress building in Lima, crowds of protesters waving Peruvian flags erupted in cheers as Boluarte’s removal was announced.

In a televised address following her ouster, the 63-year-old leader questioned the implications of the decision for Peru’s fragile democracy, saying: “At all times I have called for unity. In this context, I had not thought of myself but of the more than 34 million Peruvians who deserve better.”

Boluarte, who did not appear before Congress during the impeachment hearing, had been facing intense public anger over corruption allegations, rising crime, and deadly crackdowns on anti-government demonstrations.

Her downfall came amid renewed protests following a shooting at a concert in Lima on Thursday, an incident that further inflamed public outrage over what many Peruvians see as her failure to address worsening insecurity and gang violence.

Boluarte’s presidency, which began in December 2022 after the removal of former President Pedro Castillo, was marred by controversy from the start. Once Castillo’s vice-president, she assumed office after his failed attempt to dissolve Congress and subsequent arrest.

Her tenure has been plagued by multiple investigations, including the high-profile “Rolexgate” scandal, over allegations she accepted luxury watches as bribes, and a separate probe into whether she violated constitutional duties during a medical absence. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Public outrage deepened in July when Boluarte increased her salary to nearly 35 times Peru’s monthly minimum wage, a move widely condemned as tone-deaf amid the country’s economic struggles.

In January 2023, her administration came under international scrutiny after security forces killed more than 50 protesters during demonstrations demanding her resignation and early elections.

That crackdown led to an investigation into Boluarte and several ministers for alleged “genocide, qualified homicide, and serious injuries.”

Thursday night’s impeachment marked the fourth attempt by lawmakers to remove her from office ahead of general elections slated for April 2026.

“The only way of moving forward is Dina Boluarte’s impeachment,” opposition lawmaker Susel Paredes wrote on X (formerly Twitter) before the vote.

Boluarte’s removal makes her Peru’s sixth president since 2018, underscoring the deep political instability that has plagued the Andean nation. Three former presidents are currently serving jail terms on various corruption charges.

As of Friday morning, hundreds of jubilant demonstrators remained outside Congress, waving flags and chanting for a “new beginning”, though analysts warn that the country’s deep political divisions are far from resolved.

PoliticsDangote Refinery Imports Dirty Fuel From UK, With 13 Times Higher Sulphur Conten by treesun(op): 12:26am On Oct 10, 2025
A document exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters confirmed that the product contains a very high sulphur concentration.

Atop industry source has revealed that the Dangote Refinery is importing Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with sulphur content far above Nigeria’s approved environmental standard, raising fresh concerns over product quality and regulatory compliance.

A document exclusively obtained by SaharaReporters confirmed that the product contains a very high sulphur concentration.

According to the insider, a vessel identified as MT Clearocean Mary was scheduled to arrive at the Dangote Refinery’s offshore facility on Wednesday, October 9, 2025, carrying approximately 37,000 metric tonnes (about 49.6 million litres) of petrol with a sulphur content of 690 parts per million (ppm).

This is way higher than the 50ppm limit approved for domestic use in Nigeria.

One of the documents obtained by SaharaReporters confirmed that the PMS was loaded from the Phillips 66 Refinery in Immingham, United Kingdom, a major refining hub, before setting sail for Nigeria.

Nigeria’s fuel specification, introduced as part of the “Clean Fuels” initiative under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and enforced by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), restricts the sulphur level in imported or locally refined petrol to 50ppm to reduce air pollution and protect public health.

However, the source alleged that the Dangote Refinery’s Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit, which is central to refining crude into petrol, “is not currently operational.”

Despite this, the refinery has continued to sell PMS, giving the impression that the product was refined locally, the source added.

“The FCC is not working, but Dangote has been given various excuses to shut down and hide under excuses ranging from fights with DAPPMAN (Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria) to issues with NUPENG and PENGASSAN,” the source claimed.

NUPENG (Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers) and PENGASSAN (Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria) are Nigeria’s two major oil and gas labour unions, representing workers in different tiers of the petroleum industry.

In September 2025, the unions launched a nationwide strike at the Dangote Refinery, accusing the company of mass sacking and the replacement of Nigerian workers with foreign workers.

The insider alleged that instead of refining crude locally, the company is importing high-sulphur petrol and blending or distributing it as though it were domestically produced.

“He will discharge the product and start selling to the people. Nigeria only allows 50ppm, but he brought in high-sulphur fuel and is pretending it’s produced locally,” the source added.

Document Confirms 690ppm Sulphur Content

A Certificate of Quality issued by Phillips 66 Limited, operators of the Humber Refinery in the United Kingdom, confirms that a consignment of High-Sulphur Catalytic Gasoline (FCC Gasoline) was loaded for shipment to Dangote Nigeria on September 21, 2025.

The document, numbered MFG-250923-00016 and dated September 23, 2025, details the laboratory test results for the cargo and certifies that the sample analysed was a composite sample taken immediately after loading.

The product was drawn aboard the vessel Clearocean Marigold and tested at the refinery’s accredited laboratory in North Lincolnshire, UK.

The certificate shows that the gasoline, described as “High-Sulphur Cat Gas”, is a light petroleum product typically used as a blending component in the production of finished motor gasoline.

According to the report, the product appeared “clear and bright,” meaning that it was free of water and visible impurities, and its density at 15 °C measured 0.7375 kilograms per litre, which is consistent with normal gasoline grades.

Laboratory analysis indicated that the boiling range of the sample spanned 49 °C to 155 °C, a volatility characteristic of gasoline-range hydrocarbons. Its Research Octane Number (RON) was 92.3 and its Motor Octane Number (MON) 79.3, signifying adequate anti-knock performance for blending into premium petrol.

The vapour pressure was recorded at 33 kilopascals, within the expected range for refinery-grade gasoline intended for export or further processing.

However, the report highlights a very high sulphur concentration of 690 parts per million by weight (ppm), far exceeding the 50 ppm environmental limit imposed for retail fuels in many jurisdictions.

The sample also tested positive for mercaptans, sulphur-bearing compounds responsible for strong odours and corrosiveness.

Corrosion testing returned a NACE grade C, indicating moderate corrosive potential due to these sulphur species.

In essence, the Phillips 66 certificate establishes that the Humber Refinery produced and loaded a high-sulphur FCC gasoline cargo for export to Nigeria on September 21, 2025.

The fuel meets normal gasoline quality characteristics but contains sulphur levels more than thirteen times higher than internationally accepted retail limits, confirming that it is a feedstock that will require further processing rather than a finished consumer fuel.

SaharaReporters' investigation revealed that these figures confirm that the product is not suitable for direct sale as motor fuel and would require additional desulphurisation or refining before blending into finished gasoline.

The detailed hydrocarbon composition reported by the laboratory shows 12.5 percent aromatics, 48.1 percent olefins, 35.1 percent paraffins, and 4.3 percent naphthenes by volume, while the benzene content stood at 1.34 percent, within the accepted specification range.

This composition is typical of gasoline derived from the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) process, which yields high-olefin streams that enhance octane but contribute to instability and gum formation if not further treated.

Phillips 66 stated that the test methods followed ASTM International standards, including ASTM D86 (distillation), D4052 (density), D2699/2700 (octane numbers), D3227 (sulphur), and D6839 (hydrocarbon type analysis), ensuring the data meet global trade and customs requirements.

The certificate was signed by Chris J. Harper, a representative of the refinery’s quality-assurance department, certifying the results as an official record of the product’s condition at loading.

Efforts to reach the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Dangote Group, Anthony Chiejina, were unsuccessful, as he neither answered calls nor responded to messages sent to him.

The Dangote Refinery, inaugurated in May 2023, was touted as a major step toward achieving Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in petroleum refining, with the capacity to produce 650,000 barrels per day.

But in August, according to industry monitor IIR, the refinery was planning a maintenance shutdown of its gasoline-making residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) unit, tentatively starting on August 10.

The shutdown was meant to carry out urgent repair work on the regenerator section due to a significant catalyst loss issue that had reduced the operating capacity of the 204,000-barrel-per-day unit.

The FCC unit is a key gasoline-making component that converts heavy crude fractions into higher-value products like gasoline and alkene gases.

PoliticsWorld Bank’s Poverty Report Doesn’t Reflect Happenings Under Tinubu- Sunday Dare by treesun(op): 10:32am On Oct 09, 2025
The Presidency has rejected the World Bank’s recent report estimating that 139 million Nigerians are living in poverty, saying the figures do not reflect current realities under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said the data quoted by the World Bank must be properly contextualised, noting that it is based on historical and modelled estimates rather than real-time assessments.

According to the statement, the World Bank’s estimate was derived from the global poverty benchmark of $2.15 per person per day, set in 2017 under the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) framework. Dare explained that the figure, when converted to today’s exchange rate, equals about ₦100,000 per month—an amount that is above Nigeria’s new minimum wage of ₦70,000.

The measure is an analytical construct, not a direct reflection of local income realities,” he said. “The poverty assessment under the PPP methodology relies on outdated consumption data, with Nigeria’s last major household survey conducted in 2018/2019.”

He added that the estimate does not account for the informal and subsistence sectors that sustain millions of households across the country.

The Presidency maintained that the figure should be regarded as a global model estimate, not an empirical representation of conditions in 2025, and emphasised that the country’s poverty trajectory is now one of recovery and inclusive reform.

Dare listed a range of government programmes aimed at reducing poverty and improving living standards, including:

Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT): Expanded to reach 15 million households nationwide, with over ₦297 billion disbursed since 2023.

Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RH-WDEP): Covering all 8,809 electoral wards, providing micro-infrastructure and social services at the community level.

National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs): Strengthened initiatives such as N-Power, TraderMoni, MarketMoni, FarmerMoni, and the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.

Food Security Measures: Including distribution of subsidised grains and fertilisers, mechanisation initiatives, and the revival of strategic food reserves.

Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund (RHIF): Financing key energy, road, and housing projects to reduce living costs and boost job creation.

National Credit Guarantee Company (NCGC): Expanding access to affordable credit for small businesses, women, and youth.

The Presidency said the government is addressing long-standing structural challenges such as overdependence on imports, productivity constraints, and regional disparities.

It noted that reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and fiscal redirection toward productive sectors are part of efforts to tackle the root causes of poverty and promote sustainable growth.

Dare said the World Bank itself has acknowledged that these reforms are contributing to macroeconomic stability and renewed growth momentum.

The statement added that the administration’s medium-term focus is to ensure that macroeconomic stability translates into tangible welfare gains for citizens through affordable food, quality jobs, and reliable infrastructure.

It said ongoing investments in agriculture, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and power reliability are expected to create employment and lower living costs.

According to the Presidency, Nigerians are expected to begin seeing improvements in food prices, income levels, and purchasing power as these programmes continue to take effect.

She confirmed that the decision came after the police officially received the court order.

Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict,” Adeh said.

She explained that the directive to suspend enforcement would remain in place pending the outcome of the ongoing legal process.

“We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict,” she added.

Addressing public concerns about the purpose of the tinted glass regulation, Adeh clarified that it was introduced for security reasons, noting that some criminal activities had been carried out using vehicles with darkened windows.

“The law was not made by us. We are enforcers. The policy was purely security-driven. Some criminals were using tinted vehicles to commit offences, making it difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects,” she said.

Adeh also dismissed claims that the policy was designed for financial gain, explaining that all payments related to tinted permits are made directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), not to the police.

PoliticsNigerian Man Accused Of Leading Global Cybercrime Syndicate Arrested In Argentin by treesun(op): 9:29am On Oct 08, 2025
"Argentine authorities have captured Nigerian national Ikechukwu N., marking the country’s first arrest of a #RedNotice fugitive who was also the subject of an INTERPOL Silver Notice," a statement released late Tuesday read.

Argentine authorities have arrested Nigerian national Ikechukwu N., marking the country’s first apprehension of a fugitive listed on both INTERPOL’s Red Notice and Silver Notice.

"Argentine authorities have captured Nigerian national Ikechukwu N., marking the country’s first arrest of a #RedNotice fugitive who was also the subject of an INTERPOL Silver Notice," a statement released late Tuesday read.

According to INTERPOL, the suspect is believed to be the mastermind behind a vast international cybercrime syndicate.

"The suspect is accused of orchestrating multiple romance scams involving thousands of women, and leading an international cybercrime network," the report said.

The arrest was conducted under Operation Jackal, a global effort coordinated by INTERPOL to dismantle West African organised criminal groups involved in cyber fraud, money laundering, and other transnational crimes.

"The arrest was part of Operation Jackal, an INTERPOL-coordinated initiative targeting West African organized criminal groups."

INTERPOL stated that the operation was carried out through the joint efforts of Argentina’s Federal Police and Airport Security, with support from regional and international partners.

"It was carried out by Argentina's Federal Police and Airport Security, with support from IFCACC, FIS, and INTERPOL Brazil," the report said.

Officials added that the arrest also highlights the success of a new tracking tool designed to target illicit financial flows and recover stolen assets.

"The Silver Notice pilot project, launched in January 2025, aims to help countries trace and recover criminal assets," the report said.

The suspect is currently in custody, and further investigations are underway to identify and repatriate proceeds of crime linked to the network.

On September 29, SaharaReporters reported that a 29-year-old Nigerian national, Stephane alias K Cee Dominic, had been arrested in West Delhi's Tilak Nagar for allegedly duping more than 100 women across India by posing as a UK-based Korean businessman on a language exchange app.

According to police officials, Dominic used the app to target single women, gain their trust, and demand money, according to Hindustan Times.

Dominic reportedly introduced himself as Duck Young, a Korean jewelry-based businessman who settled in the UK, and lured victims with false promises of personal relationships and business partnerships.

"The accused would claim to be stranded at immigration with large-value cheques or documents pending clearance. Meanwhile, his associates would impersonate officials over phone calls and demand money, which the victim would transfer digitally," said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam.

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu appears detached from the people he leads. Despite his self-declared situational awareness of all things Nigerian, some of his officials seem to be shielding him from the harsh realities of the biting hardship in Nigeria. This explains why some of the President’s claims in his 65th Independence Day broadcast on October 1 are being subjected to intense scrutiny.

Virtually all countries have experienced some form of social, economic, and technological progress over the last 65 years, and Nigeria cannot be an exception. However, the last two years have seen a sharp decline in living conditions for most Nigerians.

According to the President, his administration has turned the corner and “the worst is over for Nigeria.” He added that yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief on several fronts. Yet, this assertion seems to be a stretch.

As the President rightly observed, the accurate measure of Nigeria’s success should not be limited to economic statistics alone, “but rather in the food on our families’ tables, the quality of education our children receive, the electricity in our homes, and the security in our communities.”

Currently, these indices remain low in Nigeria. Hence, the worst is not over yet.

Tinubu stated that Nigerians now have access to better education and health care than in 1960. At Independence, he said, Nigeria had 120 secondary schools with a student population of about 130,000. By 2024, that number had grown to more than 23,000 secondary schools—a great leap in 65 years!

He reminded Nigerians that at Independence, the country had only two tertiary institutions: the University of Ibadan and Yaba College of Technology. By the end of 2024, there were 274 universities, 183 polytechnics, and 236 colleges of education, comprising federal, state, and private institutions.

However, the main issue is not the increase in the number of institutions but their ability to fulfil their mandates. Nigerian universities consistently rank low in the Webometrics table. Besides, the quality of output matters greatly. In some public schools, pupils still learn in classrooms without roofs and sit on bare floors.

University staff unions frequently strike over poor pay and inadequate facilities. The Federal Government has failed to honour a N1.2 trillion Memorandum of Understanding with ASUU to revitalise universities since 2009. The true measure of any government’s achievements lies in the quality of life of the people, not merely in numbers.

The health sector tells a similar story. Although there are more health institutions, the quality of healthcare remains poor. Most public hospitals lack basic equipment necessary for diagnosing and treating ailments. The doctor-to-patient ratio is 3.9 per 10,000, far below the prescribed global minimum.

If the healthcare system were functioning well, the Nigerian elite would not be spending between $1 billion and $1.6 billion annually on medical tourism.

In addition, over 60 per cent of Nigerian doctors would not be working abroad, and those remaining would not frequently strike.

It is heartening that foreign reserves have increased to $42.03 billion—the highest since 2019—thanks to forex reforms.

However, the Excess Crude Account is badly depleted, falling from over $2 billion in 2015 to just $535,823.39 in August. Despite lower oil prices, the ECA was as high as $20 billion in 2008.

The drop in the ECA balance in recent years is due to frequent government raids. In an economic recession, Nigeria would normally rely on the ECA, which this government should revive.

The President proudly noted a GDP growth of 4.23 per cent in the second quarter of 2025. His administration also swiftly surpassed its 2025 non-oil revenue target, achieving over N20 trillion by August.

But what about the manufacturing sector? It slowed to 1.60 per cent growth in Q2 2025, with its GDP share dropping to 7.81 per cent from 8.01 per cent in Q2 2024. What efforts have been made to revive the textile industry?

Sadly, many Nigerians rely heavily on imported clothes. In 2024, textile imports cost Nigeria N726 billion, up 92 per cent from the N377 billion recorded in 2023 following the naira devaluation.

While certain macroeconomic indicators are trending upward, the impact on ordinary lives remains questionable. What is the average wage? Can a professor adequately feed a family of six on today’s earnings? The N70,000 minimum monthly wage is a pittance after the naira devaluation.

In 2020, GDP per capita was $2,019.66; by December 2024, it had dropped significantly to $835.49, a 58.6 per cent decline.

High inflation has disrupted everything and left Nigerians in misery. Tinubu celebrated inflation’s decline to 20.12 per cent in August 2025, the lowest level in three years.

In comparison, the inflation rate in the Benin Republic was 1.0 per cent in July, rising slightly to 1.30 per cent in August. The Consumer Price Index there decreased 0.50 per cent in August compared to July.

Although the naira has stabilised somewhat from the volatility of 2023 and 2024, it remains weak.

At the start of the Fourth Republic in 1999, the exchange rate was N21.89 to $1. When Tinubu took office in May 2023, it was about N460.72 to $1. Today, it stands at around N1,500 to $1. This has severely impacted businesses, many of which have closed, resulting in significant job losses.

In the power sector, little has been done to ensure constant electricity as generation remains a dismal 5,000MW, while peers like Egypt do 10 times that, and the national grid continues to collapse. Tinubu has only raised tariffs to bridge government deficits.

Infrastructure development has been suboptimal, despite the President’s claims of expanded transport infrastructure across rail, roads, airports, and seaports. Many federal roads desperately need repairs or complete reconstruction.

In agriculture, Nigeria still imports basic food while exporting raw commodities.

Tinubu’s claim that Nigeria now exports more than it imports is a half-truth. The reality is that many Nigerians cannot afford to import due to prohibitive costs and a high exchange rate. Only a handful can manage it.

The country remains under siege from criminals, although Tinubu asserts that it is winning the war against terrorism, banditry, and violent crimes. He noted that peace has returned to many liberated communities in the North-West and North-East.

The truth is that the government has largely failed to secure Nigerians. Terrorism has surged, especially in the North-East and North-Central. New terror groups like Lakurawa and Mahmuda exemplify this with increasing forays southwards into states like Kwara.

From May 2023 to April 2024, the National Bureau of Statistics reported 614,937 deaths in Nigeria. Between January and March 2025 alone, about 2,000 Nigerians were killed in violent incidents nationwide.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum lamented that terrorists now attack and kidnap people almost daily in many communities. Millions have been displaced.

Primarily, it is political officeholders who maintain a good standard of living—perhaps this is what is confusing the President and his speechwriters.

The President should realise that no one grades their own exams. It is futile to benchmark his achievements against the Muhammadu Buhari administration. He should instead compare his administration to that of Olusegun Obasanjo.

Nigeria should benchmark itself against countries like Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, and Indonesia, which also began their development journey around 1960.

The essence of government is to ensure the welfare of its citizens. Any policy or macroeconomic growth that does not improve the lives of the people is worthless.

PoliticsDangote: Nigeria Greater Than PENGASSAN – FG by treesun(op): 1:23pm On Oct 06, 2025
By Obas Esiedesa, ABUJA

The Federal Government on Monday emphasised the critical importance of the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote Refinery, declaring that it must be supported at all costs to succeed.

The government’s position was stated by Vice President Shettima and emphasised by Minister of Budget and National Planning Senator Bagudu at the opening of the Nigerian Economic Summit 2025 in Abuja.

The government said the $20 billion facility is a national asset that must be supported to function.

Following last week’s industrial action by oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, Vice President Kashim Shettima declared that Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN.

He said, “Aliko Dangote, he’s not an individual, he’s an institution, and he’s a leading light in Nigeria’s economic parliament. And how we treat this gentleman will determine how outsiders will judge us. If he had invested $10 billion in Microsoft, in Amazon, or in Google, he probably might be worth $70 to $80 billion by now.

“But he opted to invest in his country, and we owe it to future generations to jealously protect, promote, preserve, and protect the interests of this great Nigeria.

“I wish to call for caution, retrospection, and a deeper sense of patriotism from both labour and the organised private sector in defining and improving the relationship between labour and industry in the interest of maintaining our steadily improving economic fortunes.

“It’s not about holding the whole nation to ransom because of a minor labour dispute.

“Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN. Nigeria is greater than each and every one of us. I’m not coming to you as a partisan.”

PoliticsThey Keep Calling Me’: Tunde Bakare Says ADC Leaders Are Pressuring Him To Join by treesun(op): 10:31am On Oct 05, 2025
He added that one of his younger political associates, who benefited from holding key offices in the APC, urged him to lend his influence to the ADC.

The founder of Citadel Global Community Church, Dr. Tunde Bakare, has revealed that several political stakeholders have been pressuring him to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on Saturday during the maiden edition of the Citadel School of Governance Dialogue Series themed “Nigeria at 65: Historical Reflections, Futuristic Projection” in Oregun, Lagos, Bakare disclosed that prominent figures, including a former governor and a former minister from the South-West, had approached him to align with the party.

However, the cleric made it clear that he has no intention of joining the ADC despite the mounting persuasion, according to a report by SundayPUNCH.

“There has been a lot of pressure on me from who is who to join ADC. They come to my home,” he said.

“Even while I was abroad, the hierarchy of that party kept calling, saying they needed my voice.”

He expressed goodwill toward the ADC, noting the importance of a strong opposition in Nigeria’s political landscape, but added that it would be unwise to undermine the party one helped create.

He added that one of his younger political associates, who benefited from holding key offices in the APC, urged him to lend his influence to the ADC.

But the cleric said, “I am not going to take part in ADC. The last time I knew about ADC was about a plane that crashed. I wish them well, because we need a robust opposition.”

“But you don’t birth a child called APC and then try to kill it yourself. We are not going to have another Awolowo–Akintola crisis in the South-West,” he added.

The cleric, who was instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also maintained that the emergence of President Bola Tinubu was guided by divine providence.

“If God wants to remove ‘emilokan,’ He knows how to do it. You can’t get the kind of thing Tinubu has brought without God’s support,” he said.

Formation of the Coalition

Earlier this year, a coalition of opposition leaders dissatisfied with the current administration began searching for a unified platform to challenge the ruling APC in the 2027 elections.

After months of consultations, they formally adopted the ADC as their political vehicle, shelving plans to register a new party called the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The coalition includes prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President; Nasir El-Rufai, former Kaduna State Governor; Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation; Peter Obi, 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate; David Mark, former Senate President, now ADC National Chairman; Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister, now ADC National Secretary; Aminu Tambuwal, Babachir Lawal, Isa Pantami, and others.

The ADC was chosen for its existing legal status and perceived neutrality, allowing opposition figures from various parties to converge without the delays of registering a new party.

PoliticsYou Ignore Places Where Insecurity Make Nigerians Grieve - Atiku To Tinubu by treesun(op): 9:33pm On Oct 04, 2025
In a statement personally signed by him on Saturday, Atiku said it was “deeply unfortunate” that despite the worsening insecurity across the country, President Tinubu had not visited any of the affected states to sympathise with grieving citizens.

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Plateau State, describing it as proof that the president’s priorities do not align with the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

In a statement personally signed by him on Saturday, Atiku said it was “deeply unfortunate” that despite the worsening insecurity across the country, President Tinubu had not visited any of the affected states to sympathise with grieving citizens.

"With large swathes of the country still under siege from unrelenting insecurity and thousands of innocent lives lost, it is deeply unfortunate that President Bola Tinubu has not, for once, found it worthy to visit any of the affected states to commiserate with the grieving citizens," Atiku said.

He lamented that the president only chose to visit Plateau — “one of the most terrorized parts of the North Central” — to attend a social event hosted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, rather than to console victims of recent attacks.

"Today, however, the President suddenly remembered Plateau State — one of the most terrorized parts of the North Central — not to share in the people’s pain, but to attend a social event under the auspices of his party’s national chairman," he stated.

"It is a sad reflection of priorities and a glaring mockery of leadership that while families in Plateau continue to bury their loved ones, President Tinubu chose to grace a political funeral rather than stand with the people in their darkest hour."

According to Atiku, the president’s actions amounted to “a heartless exhibition of disregard for empathy, compassion, and the dignity of human life.”

"Between the APC National Chairman and his President, what we witnessed today is a heartless exhibition of disregard for empathy, compassion, and the dignity of human life," he said.

The former vice president further decried what he described as the government’s continued insensitivity to victims of violence across the North Central states.

"From Benue to Niger and most recently Kwara, the entire North Central region has endured some of the most horrific waves of violence in recent history. Yet, not once has the APC-led government deemed it necessary to physically stand by the victims or console their families," Atiku said.

He recalled that even during Tinubu’s symbolic visit to Benue State in June, the president avoided the areas most affected by violence.

"Even when Tinubu made a symbolic visit to Benue State in June, he never bothered to set foot in Yelewata — the epicentre of the massacre. Instead, he ended his trip comfortably in Makurdi, turning his back on the people whose tears and blood still stain the soil," Atiku noted.

"Now again, he is in Plateau State, not to console the bereaved or reassure the broken, but to celebrate and make merry with his party elite while the people mourn," he added.

Atiku said Tinubu’s actions have sent a clear message to Nigerians about his leadership style.

"The message could not be clearer: this is a President who would rather feast than feel — a leader who finds pleasure where the people find pain," he said.

He warned that Nigerians are paying attention and will remember the president’s choices.

"The Nigerian people are watching — and they will remember," he concluded.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that Tinubu was at the funeral service of Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

Plateau has experienced series of Kidnappings, killings and destruction of properties by bandits.

PoliticsTerrorists Invade Niger State Community, Abduct Prominent Lawyer, Other Resident by treesun(op): 3:01pm On Oct 01, 2025
A family source told SaharaReporters that the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers, wielding sophisticated weapons.

Heavily armed terrorists have attacked Ibeto town in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State, abducting a prominent lawyer, Barrister Isyaku Muhammed Danjuma, alongside other residents in a brazen daylight operation, SaharaReporters has learnt.

The attack, which happened in the early hours of Wednesday, comes during Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary celebrations.

A family source told SaharaReporters that the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers, wielding sophisticated weapons.

“A lot of them armed with dangerous weapons and guns even bigger than what the security operatives would carry entered our town today (early morning). They were targeting prominent people to abduct. So that was how they came for Barrister Isyaku Muhammed Danjuma. He is currently with them. They have taken him away into the bush. These bandits operated openly for hours without any police or army to rescue them,” the source said.

Checks by SaharaReporters revealed that Barrister Isyaku himself had posted about the terrorists’ invasion on his Facebook page shortly before his abduction.

He wrote: “Independence Day but bandits are here in Ibeto running riot.”

Moments later, his fears came true.

The abduction was also confirmed by his associate, Mohd Gbedako Ndatsu, who reacted under the lawyer’s Facebook post.

“Please when you come across this post, pray for him because I just received a devastating news now that the poster has been kidnapped,” Ndatsu wrote.

In a related development, SaharaReporters last Friday reported that Barrister Onyesom Peace Udoka, a newly called to bar lawyer, was also kidnapped alongside her sister while returning home from her Call to Bar ceremony.

They were later freed after spending several days with their captors.

SaharaReporters learnt that the abduction occurred around Lokoja, Kogi State, on Friday, September 27, 2025, just days after she was called to the bar on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, in Abuja.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)AS Monaco Vs Manchester City: UCL (2 - 2) On 1st October 2025 by treesun(op): 11:14pm On Sep 29, 2025
Match preview
Making Kevin De Bruyne's Mancunian homecoming a miserable one, Man City took full advantage of an early red card for Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo - which led to De Bruyne's premature withdrawal - to dispatch the Italian champions with minimal fuss.

After 10-man Napoli managed to make it to half time unscathed, a customary Erling Haaland goal preceded a Jeremy Doku strike in a 2-0 Etihad success for Guardiola's crop, who are seldom outclassed in the earliest stages of the Champions League.

Indeed, the Citizens have now only tasted defeat in three of their last 21 league phase/group-stage games of the continent's premier tournament, while also finding the back of the net in 28 of their last 30 games in any UEFA competition.

The two-goal triumph over Napoli represents one of four successes that Man City have marched to during a five-match unbeaten run in all competitions, most recently pummelling Burnley 5-1 in Saturday's Premier League scrap after easing past Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup.

An agonising 1-1 draw away to Arsenal - where Guardiola's parked bus had its windows smashed in the final few moments - is the only aberration for Man City in that sequence, but the travelling fans can take little confidence from their side's continental form on the road, as the club are on a four-game losing streak in UCL away fixtures.

Speaking of Champions League fours away from home, Monaco left Belgium battered and bruised on matchday one of the 2025-26 tournament, as Adi Hutter's defence was carved open at will by a clinical Club Brugge side in a 4-1 beatdown.

A first-half horror show for Monaco saw Maghnes Akliouche's 10th-minute penalty saved by Simon Mignolet and Club Brugge score three times without reply, before erasing any shred of doubt about the result with a fabulous fourth goal in the 75th minute.

Ansu Fati's injury-time effort was of little consolation for the Ligue 1 outfit, who have now lost five of their last seven matches in Europe's top competition and have already plummeted to 34th in the table - not that the standings mean much at present, though.

The chaos has continued for Les Monegasques in their two matches since, both to their benefit and detriment, as Monaco followed up a 5-2 Ligue 1 thrashing of Metz with a crushing 3-1 loss to Lorient on Saturday, where Thilo Kehrer's first-half red card proved costly.

As Monaco have now shared a staggering 24 goals across their last five games - an average of nearly five per match - a repeat of their 2016-17 UCL thriller with Man City is certainly not off the cards; the Ligue 1 side reached the quarter-finals on away goals that year following a pulsating 6-6 aggregate draw.

Man City came through their battering of Burnley with no new concerns on the fitness front, but the increasingly injury-plagued Rodri missed that Premier League win due to a knee concern and is on the touch-and-go list for Monaco.

Guardiola is expected to do without Abdukodir Khusanov (ankle), Rayan Ait-Nouri (unspecified) and Omar Marmoush (knee) for a little while longer too, while Rayan Cherki's thigh injury is unlikely to heal fully until November.

Banking two goals and an assist at the weekend, talisman Haaland will now play his 50th Champions League game on Wednesday night; with an astounding 50 strikes from 49 matches so far, he has already broken the record for the most competition goals in a player's first half-century of appearances.

As for Monaco, all eyes will be on whether Paul Pogba will be considered fit enough for a dream debut against Man City, but the former Manchester United lynchpin is likely still a couple of weeks away from being fully match ready.

Hutter is also managing without Lamine Camara (ankle), Denis Zakaria (groin), Aleksandr Golovin (hamstring) and number one goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky (knee), but Kehrer's sending-off at the weekend means nothing for his Champions League availability.

Thanks to another inconsequential late strike at the weekend, Barcelona loanee Fati already boasts an eye-catching four goals from three substitute appearances for Monaco, and a first start on Wednesday is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Monaco possible starting lineup:

Kohn; Vanderson, Dier, Kehrer, Henrique; Akliouche, Coulibaly, Teze, Fati; Balogun, Biereth

Manchester City possible starting lineup:

Donnarumma; Nunes, Stones, Gvardiol, O'Reilly; Gonzalez; Bobb, Silva, Reijnders, Doku; Haaland

PoliticsTinubu’s Govt Pushes Nigeria Deeper Into Debt Again With Fresh ₦1.1 Trillion WB by treesun(op): 9:09pm On Sep 28, 2025
The World Bank is set to approve fresh loans worth over ₦1.1 trn ($750 m) for Nigeria on Tuesday, adding to the country’s already soaring debt burden under Bola Tinubu.
Information from the Bank’s website shows $500m will go to a digital infrastructure project while $250m will support healthcare security programmes in West and Central Africa.

The digital project, known as the Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth in Nigeria, aims to expand broadband access in neglected and rural areas.

The scheme has a total price tag of $1.6bn, with the World Bank providing $500m and other investors expected to contribute the balance.

Communications Minister Bosun Tijani boasted in August that, “Over the past two years, we have worked tirelessly on what is arguably the most ambitious and foundational digital infrastructure project in Nigeria’s history, Project BRIDGE.”

The project will be carried out through a special purpose vehicle, with the Federal Government holding a majority stake while private investors take the rest.

In addition to the World Bank’s loan, other financiers such as the African Development Bank, the European Investment Bank and the Islamic Development Bank are expected to contribute.

The $250m health loan will be channelled into Phase II of the Health Security Programme and overseen by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the Finance Ministry.

The initiative is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to detect and respond to public health emergencies in line with lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since June 2023, Nigeria has secured $8.4bn in new loans from the World Bank alone, making the country one of its biggest borrowers in Africa.

Economist Adewale Abimbola said, “Borrowing isn’t inherently bad, if it’s concessionary and tied to viable, revenue-generating projects, then it’s a smart move. The key is in implementation and accountability.”

But another analyst, Aliyu Ilias, warned that Nigeria’s debt stock has ballooned from about ₦87tn under Muhammadu Buhari to ₦149tn under Bola Tinubu, with forecasts pointing to ₦180tn.

“When former President Muhammadu Buhari left office, the debt stock was around N87tn. Now, it’s approximately N149tn, and projections suggest it could hit N180tn,” Ilias warned.

He questioned the wisdom of piling up new loans even as the government claims higher revenues from subsidy removal and increased tax collections.

“Why are we borrowing more when we’re supposedly earning more?” he asked.

Data from the Debt Management Office shows Nigeria’s debt to the World Bank alone has climbed to $18.23bn, accounting for almost 40 per cent of the nation’s total external debt.

Critics argue that rising debt service costs are draining funds needed for schools, hospitals, infrastructure and jobs, leaving Nigerians to bear the brunt of a reckless borrowing binge.

PoliticsFG Denies Claims Of Systematic Genocide Against Christians by treesun(op): 4:55pm On Sep 28, 2025
The Federal Government on Sunday dismissed claims by some international platforms and online commentators that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Sunday, described the claims as false, divisive and harmful to Nigeria’s peace.

“The Federal Government strongly condemns and categorically refutes recent allegations by certain international platforms and online influencers suggesting that terrorists operating in Nigeria are engaged in a systematic genocide against Christians.

“Such claims are false, baseless, despicable, and divisive,” Idris said.

He stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges should not be misrepresented as religiously motivated.

“Portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against a single religious group is a gross misrepresentation of reality.

“While Nigeria, like many countries, has faced security challenges, including acts of terrorism perpetrated by criminals, couching the situation as a deliberate, systematic attack on Christians is inaccurate and harmful,” the minister added.

According to him, terrorists have attacked Nigerians across faiths, not sparing Muslims, Christians or people of other identities.

“These criminals target all who reject their murderous ideology, regardless of faith.

“Muslims, Christians, and even those who do not identify with any religion have suffered at their hands,” he stated.

Highlighting security operations, Idris said between May 2023 and February 2025, security forces neutralised 13,543 terrorists and criminals, while nearly 10,000 hostages were rescued across the country.

He recalled that the leadership of Nigeria’s al-Qaeda affiliate, Ansaru, was also recently captured.

“Only last month, the top leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan — commonly known as ANSARU — was captured in a well-coordinated counter-terrorism operation,” the statement noted.

Idris further explained that over 700 convictions had been secured in the prosecution of Boko Haram suspects.

“In the fight against terrorism, Nigeria has made significant strides in prosecuting Boko Haram suspects.

“To date, we have successfully prosecuted seven batches of suspects, securing over 700 convictions,” he said.

He dismissed the genocide narrative as a distortion of Nigeria’s multi-religious reality, adding that the country’s leadership reflected inclusivity.

“Christianity is neither endangered nor marginalised in Nigeria. It is doubtful that foreign interlopers into Nigerian affairs are aware that the current heads of both the Armed Forces and the Police Force are Christians, a fact that underscores the inclusivity of our national leadership,” Idris stressed.

The minister also pointed to international recognition of Nigeria’s interfaith harmony.

“In March of this year, the inaugural Commonwealth Peace Prize was awarded to two Nigerian religious leaders, Rev. Dr. James Movel Wuye and Imam Dr. Muhammad Nurayn Ashafa, co-founders of the Interfaith Mediation Centre,” he said.

He urged international media and commentators to avoid sensationalism and divisive rhetoric, and instead support Nigeria’s efforts against terrorism.

“We urge the international media and other commentators to act with responsibility and have respect for facts.

“All stakeholders are advised to avoid ignorance, sensationalism, and divisive rhetoric, and instead support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in the fight against terrorism and all forms of criminality,” Idris added.

PoliticsDangote Refinery Resumes Fuel Sale In Naira by treesun(op): 10:47pm On Sep 27, 2025
The Dangote refinery says it has resumed the sale of fuel in naira.

In a memo sent to marketers on Saturday, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent, the refinery said this was due to the intervention of the naira-for-crude technical committee.

“Following the intervention of the Naira for Crude Technical Committee Chairman, we are pleased to inform you of the resumption of PMS sales in Naira commencing immediately.

“You may kindly proceed to place your orders in naira for both self-collection and free delivery of PMS to the earlier advised locations across the country. Thank you for your continued patronage,” the memo read.

In an earlier memo on Friday, the refinery announced the suspension of petrol sales in naira, effective from Sunday, September 28, 2025, citing the exhaustion of its crude-for-naira allocation as the reason.

“We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our naira-crude allocations, and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in naira going forward.

“Kindly note that this suspension of Naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025. We will provide further updates regarding the resumption of supply once the situation has been resolved.

“All customers with PMS transactions in Naira who would like a refund of their current payments should formally request the processing of their refund,” the refinery said.

However, the intervention of the Federal Government committee in charge of the naira-for-crude deal was said to have resolved the differences.
